Money trees don't produce a ton of roots, so the watering requirements are sometime touchy. They also store a ton of water in the trunk more like a succulent. If they have lots of leaves, water more frequently, less often for the opposite. I use a loose aroid mix to encourage more root growth. They also get leaf burn super easy so wipe off the leaves if you splash water on them and they are close to a window.

I don’t know where this whole ice cube thing started but ignore ANY tag on ANY plant that says use an ice cube. If you want to put your plant into shock and eventually kill it, then yes, use ice cubes lol. Most plants need a thorough watering at room temperature. Orchids often have tags that say use ice cubes and it drives me nuts!

If you braid it, there will be a bump in the braid where the stems were cut. So you can either be fine with the bump in the braid, or just keep it short and bushy through pruning. 👍

Your low light money tree was massively stretching for light as well. That’s why the internodes are so long. I keep mine in a window that receives morning sun and I keep the blinds half open. It loves it there. It loves it when I forget about it because they really don’t need much water. I’ve had it for a year and have only fed it liquid nutrients twice, at half the dose as well.
@thegirlwithashovel
@thegirlwithashovel Год назад

That's a terracotta pot and they evaporate water much quicker. They're great for cactus and succulents but not for humidity loving plants. I keep my money tree in a plastic pot for the drainage holes and use a basket for decorative touch to place it in after I water/drain it.
@thegirlwithashovel
@thegirlwithashovel Год назад
Yes, plastic pots are also good for this plant. I used terra cotta for mine while it was in a lower light location to ensure better drainage because it wasn't drying out fast enough.

I'm finding clay pots are great for many indoor plants that are risk of overwatering. Clay lets them dry completely before I thoroughly water them again. 👍
@michelleburris1056
@michelleburris1056 Год назад
You can take your plant out of the terracotta pot (those pots wick water away from the plant). I'm sure you will find that it doesn't dry out as fast so you won't have to water too frequently.

How come they live in a SWAMP in the wild but they tell you not to overwater them ?
@thegirlwithashovel
@thegirlwithashovel Год назад
Great question Clinton! I believe it all comes down to what growing media the plant is growing in, the root system becomes used to. For example, I've got some money tree cuttings growing in straight water right now and they're loving it! But as for issues with overwatering, I think the reason they have issues is because indoor temperatures and humidity is usually a lot lower than in a swamp, so they don't have nearly as much transpiration, so not nearly as much water usage. Does that explain a bit? I know it seems really confusing, like "why do you grow great in the swamp, but you're dying on me indoors?!" Haha! 😂

@yessicalurita3565 Put enough water so it drains out of the pot. That's what he said. Suggested. Two of my leaves have white spots that look like paint and a few leaves have brown spots that are now holes. I never watered mine to where the water flows out of the bottom of the pot. I'm about to attempt his suggestion.

@thegirlwithashovel
@thegirlwithashovel 8 месяцев назад
Yes if you've got the humidity, these guys love the extra light! But do the same in Arizona and they'll die real fast! It's been a bit since I've done this video but I'm assuming the white spots were from watering. Do you get the leaves wet when you water? If you wipe them off with a damp cloth they should go away if it's what I'm thinking of... 😊

My money tree started recently having trouble...it was drooping. I bought it a light, changed out some of the soil with some cactus blend, regular dirt and perlite, gently cleaned the leaves and gave it a small watering. I hope it bounces back. I'm gonna fertilize it this weekend just in case that is lacking. I was misting until it started drooping...I was afraid my misting was harming it. Good to know it wasn't. Also while removing about 50% of its old soil...found a big plastic band around the bottom. I wonder if it had not been noticed if it would have choked the plant when it grew? I don't really care for the braiding so didn't need to keep it on there.
@thegirlwithashovel
@thegirlwithashovel 5 месяцев назад
Yes the band will eventually choke it. Good choice to remove it. Just be careful when changing a lot of different things, you won't be able to know which one thing was making the difference. I would recommend changing one thing, then waiting a few weeks, then changing another thing if it's still struggling. Hope this helps! 😊

This week, I saw a little web in one of her branch where a deformed new branch was, I then purchased Captain Jack’s Neem oil and have been using on her since this Wednesday. Her leafs is still curling a bit and have brown tip, some brown spots, but over all leafs started to turn to darker green color ( it was light green with tiny yellow spots all over each leaf). I don’t know if I’m doing the right thing and not sure how to determine if she healthy again and insects are gone (if there was any). Thank you in advance.

Your definitely on the right track! The webbing is a sign of spider mites, as well as the tiny little yellow spots everywhere... Spider mites are very small. To see them, get a white piece of paper and shake a few leaves over it. It should drop some specks. If these specks start moving, then it's spider mites! This can help you see if you still have them or not. Hope this helps!

Will raise bed soil be ok? I’m worried. I see little nets and one one of the braided died. Maybe cause I didn’t put holes into the pot soon enough. Not sure cause it’s root rot or the soil. Leaves have been turning yellow and falling.
@thegirlwithashovel
@thegirlwithashovel Год назад
Hi! I would add additional perlite to raised bed soil. That is if it doesn't smell like compost. If the compost hasn't broken down enough (like in some garden soils), then it could cause problems in your indoor pots. But if it's composted enough then you should be fine as long as you add more drainage with the perlite or sand. And yes, if you don't have holes it could be too much water at the bottom of the pot which can cause root rot...
@purposelywin4943
@purposelywin4943 Год назад

@thegirlwithashovel
@thegirlwithashovel Год назад
Definitely let it dry out. The lightish brown color could possibly show it's too late. So I would dry it out, then if any more stems fall over I would propagate them in water. (Cut off the brown sections, let it dry for a few days, then place in water). I hope this helps!

The leaves are beautiful...no yellowing ..no browning....watering on point but drooping leaves
@thegirlwithashovel
@thegirlwithashovel Год назад
If the leaves are looking nice and green and are not dropping, but are only facing downward, it could either be a sign of not enough water (but then they would go back up after watered). Or it could just be the healthy leaves facing to the sides because that's where most of the light comes from through windows. To fix it you would need a plant light to give light from above. But personally I don't think there's anything wrong with the leaves going more to the sides as long as it is still healthy! 😊

Unfortunately it sounds like you did all the right things, but now you just have to wait for it to recover. If you are in the northern hemisphere this could be a few months until spring comes and it starts actively growing again. The only thing to watch out for is if the leaves continue to turn yellow and fall off, but it seems like you've done the right thing for now with changing out the soil. 🙂

I made the shelves. Bought the brackets off of Amazon. Then I sanded down and stained regular 2x8's. Then I screwed in the lights to the wood. The lights were from either Ikea or Amazon. I don't remember. Sorry, I bought a lot of lights to test right around the same time haha! But they do have a timer I just set to 12 hours and it turns on and off automatically so I don't have to worry about it! 😂

Can you prune a money tree ? I have 2 in small pots but I don’t want them to get too big for the area I have them in. They don’t need to be trimmed yet. But can I keep them in the smaller pots so they don’t get too big?

You can. For this I would recommend looking into bonsai plants. This will keep them from outgrowing their pots (their root system is more what I worry about).

The golden tie is useful when it's young but it should stay together on its own after several months of it being tied. Next, they use golden ties to "bring fortune and good luck in your life". So you can keep it on for that reason! But make sure if it is starting to rub on your stems that you either loosen it or remove it at that point. ❤️

I believe the "ice cube" situation depends on your tap water. Refrigerators don't usually have a filter for ice. So if you have alot of chemicals in your tap water, your ice cubes will to.
@thegirlwithashovel
@thegirlwithashovel Год назад
Yes. It is partly the quality of the tap water, but also some plants are more sensitive to the temperature change of the cold water on their roots. Think winter rain temps vs summer rain temps. Some plants don't mind, but others hate getting cold feet lol. 😆
@d-nice8834
@d-nice8834 Год назад
I actually brought a bonsai, I was gifted back to life with the ice cube trick. The altitude from which rain falls is usually on the cool side, so I'm not sure the temperature is an issue. Also, I'm on city water and God only knows what all is in that stuff. It's allowed me to fine tune my watering schedule. I'm a novice and it's working for me.

dumb question here. but if i have a ceramic pot thats painted black would that still be ok and allow the soil to "breathe" properly???
@thegirlwithashovel
@thegirlwithashovel Год назад
Hmm... I'm not sure. I know if it's glazed it loses the breathability. But I'm not sure about unglazed and simply painted. I would assume it would lessen the amount of water able to go into the ceramic (especially if it's painted on the inside as well). So just keep an eye on your moisture levels and make sure it dries out enough between watering. Sorry I didn't have a definitive answer for you...

just purchased a Money Tree plant in a 10 inch pot with drainage. I poured one litre of Water and a little came out of the drainage holes. But my moisture meter indicated the earth as dry. Does this mean i didnt pour enough water?
@thegirlwithashovel
@thegirlwithashovel 11 месяцев назад
Sometimes our soil can be so dry it pulls away from the sides, creating areas where water will flow through without ever soaking into the soil. You can watch my video on "when to bottom water your plants" to see what is going on. Basically sounds like you need to soak your soil a bit more. 😉
@jeffreykaufmann2867
@jeffreykaufmann2867 11 месяцев назад
@thegirlwithashovel The Volume of the Pot is about 7.5 Litres so one litre of Water may not be enough to soak it. Next time I'll pour 1.5 litres of Water. I bought this Money tree at ikea and on the sticker it indicated that the water requirement is only 1/3. Plants that need a lot of water get a 3/3. It can easily go without water for 2 Weeks.

Is a plastic pot also good?
@thegirlwithashovel
@thegirlwithashovel Год назад
Plastic pots are fine but they need good drainage. I feel that mine likes the ceramic pot more just because it gives it a better moist/dry cycle since the ceramic holds onto a bit of moisture and will also dry out as the soil dries. I also personally feel that the plastic pots tend to heat up a bit more so you can potentially have your soil and roots a bit less protected in plastic. But that being said a lot of my plants are still in plastic because let's just admit it... It's cheaper! 🤣

I think the reason ice cubes don't work well often is that MOST people I've known use tap water to make them. Tap water can contain numerous harmful substances and many municipalities report up to 88 or so various pharmaceuticals in tap water from people flushing meds. If there is Floride in the water it WILL harm your plant. I made that mistake and saw the beginning of decline. I switched to filtered water ice cubes, once a week, 3 cubes..they are doing well again. I think the thing that makes them perky and happiest of all that its a very visible difference is to give them at least 6-8 hours of very bright "Indirect" Sunlight. I also find they look much better if you keep it from growing leaves or branches along the lower trunk. This allows more nutrients to go to upper leaf use, and you get a better tree look. By the way, these are not my advice and observations. I'm new to plant children in the house, but I read a lot on what I buy for best chances as I hate killin things. Why I follow the Lovely and informative host here. She clearly is passionate about what she does. Sooo, I'm saying if I can do it, you can do it. Oh, I'm using a mix of specific Money Tree formulated soil and Happy Frog Soil which is very good soil. I'm learning very quickly to just vibe them out, and see what they're saying to me because they have all manner of "body language" Thank You, Girl With A Shovel..great video

Hi Karina! This all depends on how healthy the roots are and how much energy it's got stored up. I've personally pruned all the leaves off (called a hard pruning) and it's pushing out new ones now. I would give it a shot. Just be careful not to over water right now since only the stem is using water. Good luck!

Why leaves turn brown and fall off
@thegirlwithashovel
@thegirlwithashovel 8 месяцев назад
It's usually brown when it's dry and yellow when it's too wet, but see if the leaves are crinkly. This is a sure sign of too little water. If they're still soft, then it's a sign of too much water/not enough light/not enough drainage... 😊

@thegirlwithashovel
@thegirlwithashovel 5 месяцев назад
I'm sorry your question wasn't answered. Trimming is usually a part of propagation videos, which I don't have for money trees yet. What you need to do is trim it above a leaf node (the little bump on the stem). This allows the plant to have somewhere to grow a new stem. I usually try to only cut a few stems at a time so the plant still has a few leaves on it. I hope this helps!

@thegirlwithashovel
@thegirlwithashovel 8 месяцев назад
That's why I said I was testing it out in low light first and you can see how leggy it got. Then once I switched to brighter light, it pushed out the very large leaves at the top. I like to push them to the edge to see what they can and cannot handle lol! But you're right that they love more light! 😆
