The Naturehike MONGAR 2 and STAR RIVER 2 are quite similar tents, but just how similar are they?Join Trev as he takes a closer look at these two lightweight 2 person tents in this 2 tent review!
**This is not the Mongar vs the MSR HUBBA HUBBA as many thought may be on the cards although there is a link below in case you're interested in that tent)
Trev loves a tent off... and after last weeks review of the Mongar 2 (supplied with thanks to Col from Outdoor Gear Essentials -
outdoorgearessentials.co.uk/ ) someone asked him "What is the difference / similarities between the Naturehike Mongar 2 and Star River tents?"
Trev took on the challenge and managed to source the Star River 2, and in this video he puts them both up side by side and runs through all the differences.
FANCY ONE THESE TENTS? Then check out Colin's site for UK supplied stock of the Mongar 2 outdoorgearessentials.co.uk/ (plus Lanshan, Vik 1 and other tents at really competitive prices) or try some of the following links...

Maybe this helps people - the Star River 2 is a Big Agnes Copper Spur UL2 clone and the Mongar 2 is a MSR Hubba Hubba 2 clone. Both based off top selling tents from the big brands - both very good for the price!

Very helpful comparison thanks. A point missed. The Mongar has a much wider roof that puts an awning over the vestibule. While with the Star River when the fly door is open the rain is much more likely to drip into the tent. So the wider head room inside the Mongar, also means an awning over the door when getting in and out in the rain

This is an excellent comparison , thank you! It appears to me that, although on the sides the river is less roomy, it is more spacious at the feet and head, due to those sides being more upright, which would benefit taller individuals

I ended up buying both and have decided to keep them both. I prefer the Star River for myself because of the additional fabric that raises the height of the bathtub floor. The mongar is considerably wider which is a better design for two people so I will give this tent to my two daughters to use. The other differences in clips, pockets and cross member are not significant in my opinion. I took the star river out this weekend in the rain and it worked very well and I was completely dry.

i was surprised they were the same weight especially as the monger has so much more netting ….. maybe the alloy poles are a bit beefier or something 🤔 there is a 15D version of the Mongar that i believe is 1.8kg (i have one 😄) looking at them both the Star River with more inner material seems a true 3 season tent whereas the Mongar is pretty much a 1 season maybe 1 1/2 season tent …. 😄 great review as always nice one Trev …. atb Dave Mc

Great video. I think the Star River 2 is slightly better. It seems like an improved version of the Mongar 2, especially the extra head room. The only thing that would make it better is if it had a longer 'cross bar' (same length as the Mongar, rather than shorter) so the inside doesn't come in so much on the sides, and thereby losing space. That wouldn't matter, if you are sleeping in it by yourself, but might be slightly inconvenient if sharing this tent with a second person.

I bought this tent because of the amazing reviews. I live in a place in Texas where the winds get up to 50-75mph which is quite bad and had a few tents collapse during a camp outs. I bought this one for this area and used it for another one the nature hike mongar 2 I have two of them. Beautiful tents! When it is 105 degrees outside those flap’s create a great cross breeze. Even my husband did great sleeping in the tent. 6 foot 3 inches. Still had plenty of room to have gear at the bottom. Wind was definitely not an issue. Especially with the huge stakes we had to nail into the rock hard ground.

Excellent and helpful vid! I went for the Star River 2 and tried setting it up yesterday in my living room and ran into an issue. The footprint is about 10cm longer than the inner tent, but in this vid the footprints are the same size as the tent. It says "Mat for Star River 2" on the package. Impossible to set it up without a lot of spare mat, and lifting it is out of the question since the entire mat comes loose.

Thank you for doing a comparative review. I was nearly considering the River 2 considering the pockets and the aluminum center pole “thing”. However, I didn’t like how the zipper doors design, leaving the mesh rolled up at the bottom rather than to the side. Tough break. The Mongar product description states that the width is at 135mm and the River 2 is 130mm.

Great Video. The Star River 2 door that rolls to the bottom is probably my only (mild) complaint about it. Easy to flap outside and get wet - and in or out has a habit of catching mud etc if you're sat inside with legs/boots outside. But the actual opening looked much bigger than the Mongar. I couldn't quite see if the Mongar has the central light hook that the SR2 does ?
@SummitOrNothing

The mongar had no central hook but did have a kind of loft net! You could easily stick a torch up there

If you want a 2 person tent you should pick the mongar as you can sleep in opposite directions. The star river is more for solo camping because it has better headspace but shoulder to shoulder sleeping will be very narrow. So for 2 persons i would recommend star river 3 where I feel like the monger 2 is already ok. This has also more vestibule space

really nice and detailed comparison. thank you! wouldhave appreciate also if you had given some actual camping experience about ventilation and especially the differnt door systems. which door style is easier to use and maybe lets less bucks in when u open and close it quickly. because i suppose the Mongar door can just hamg there with the zipper not really closed so at least there is a bit of protection. and then I also wonder about the lack of one window or vent with the Star River. but I could assume the higher opposite side thus creates a bigger chimney effect. but then again if the wind is turning the Mongar is in advantage due to its symmetrical design. But the headroom and the pockets are really a big plus also not to forget the higher fabric part on the inner tent because I read a lot of people complain that the Mongar can get quickly too breezy and thus chilly inside because of the only mesh design.

I use the Mongar 2 tent. Have used it for 3 years now and am extremely satisfied. Have used it for a cycling holiday in Denmark in all kinds of weather. I use the top pocket in the inner tent to dry towels during the day and is also a good storage space. However, I have a problem with the inner tent in that the zipper is stuck in the fabric and it is impossible to get rid of it. One part of the zipper bulges out. Does anyone have a link to pages how I can fix it myself. I'm probably not the only one with this problem. A good piece of advice is to be careful when using the zipper and possibly hold with one hand and pull the zipper with the other!!!!! Thanks for this review.!!

The Star River is pretty close to the Robens Boulder2 who is my favourite tent. I also own and love the NH CloudUp2, however...the problem I have with the NatureHike tents, is that they all have too much mesh and too little 'solid wall' inners. I live in Norway, the nights are getting colder, and if I were to go camping now, I would definitely bring my Robens Boulder2 and not my beloved NH CloudUp2,-for that reason alone. Too much mesh is a no-go for me exept in mid summer,-I've had enough cold nights thank you very much! Other than that, both these tents looks like they could do the job, I like the Star River the best, but...I still prefer my Robens😊

Also love my Robens Boulder 2. Feel the quality is a little bit better than my Cloud up 3 as well. Been out in 25mph winds and it was rock solid all night.

@@barijohn yes, it has been guaranteed to withstand 62 mph winds, so pretty sturdy stuff! And really good quality as well. Scandinavian/Nordic brands are built to handle the Nordic climate😊

Now try Hillman Early Bird 2, it's a little bit smaller than Mongar 2 and it's supposed to be in 20D too but the inner is true 4 season.

The Star River looks that it may be warmer down low, more sheltered due to the higher fabric wall.

What is never mentioned is that the white/grey colour reflects more heat in hot weather .. That's why it is so popular in America and the far east.

Cracking video Trevor and will hopefully help some people to choose. I bought the latest 15D star river 2 and it has the metal tags and the twist clips for the inner to the poles. It was the extra fabric rather than full mesh that swung it for me

I have the same version of Star River as in the video - Does the latest retain the fly clips on the ground mat corner tapes? Does enable fly first pitching if needed (though much more of a faff than inner first).
@dazauto107
@dazauto107 2 года назад
@@Dean_Smith mine doesn’t have the 4 black plastic fly clips. It uses the same method for ground sheet, inner and outer fly i.e. metal washer in nylon strap for all. I guess it is less fragile or possibly just cheaper to produce. Can still be pitched outer first.

I’m considering the star river for the same reasons. Does the fabric also provide better protection from rain as it raises the sides of the wall? I live in Australia so it’s quite warm when I go camping but still want good protection if there is heavy rainfall

Can the Mongar be modified to add more protection over the mesh?

I wished the Star River 2 came also in olive/forest green like the Cloud Up 2. That bright green is like a textmarker. No stealth camping possible. I wonder who makes decisions to use light grey, purple, blue or orange for outdoor tents. Those are colors for festival tents at music events.

As the new proud owner of the Star River tent featured in this very video (won it via a Patreon competition), I would definitely recommend the Tent. So quick and simple to set up, reliable and warm when I’ve used it in high winds/rain on Dartmoor.

@@cyrilhaessig27 I haven’t experienced any issues with the zips thus far. I was a bit sceptical about how the inner opens (by dropping to the ground) but actually now prefer this feature to other opening styles.

I would love one of these but as my wife has pointed out the nine tents already in the garage ( actually 13 plus tarps, couple of bivvy's and four hammocks, but who's counting) I don't think I can justify it on a Thursday🤣😂🤣

I've been a naturehike fan for awhile and currently own a cloud up for over 3years - I love it as its ultralight and perfect for 1 person moto camping. Built well! Moved back to NZ from Japan and the weathers colder and windier here.. looks like the star river would be warmer but being higher would catch the wind. Also noticed no fly connection to the inner except on sides. ..which would be better in cold/ windy weather? 😳 Would like a comparison
@SummitOrNothing
@SummitOrNothing 2 года назад
Hi Bennet - out of these two I'd say that the star river would be the better of the two for colder windier nights - but you may even want to check out the cloud up 2 if you havent already. Tie off an additional guyline to the rear window and the thing is bomb proof. Also, I have never had an issue with the flysheet not being attached to the frame, it actually clips to the ground sheet or inner via the corners. Thanks for watching!

@@SummitOrNothing Thanks for the reply!! Yeah star river does look better for colder climates when ventilation isn't such an issue.. like the cloud up 2 but TBH I hated the front exit as side is much easier.. especially now Im over 40 🤣
