"While Caitlin is fantastic and I think she's going to have an incredible career in the WNBA, there were women who were worthy of coverage prior to her, and I will not be silenced when it comes to that." Basketball analyst, host, ESPN reporter, and NY Knicks Radio analyst Monica NcNutt breaks down her viral debate with Stephen A. Smith about Caitlin Clark and the WNBA and discusses the larger underlying issues of gender, race, and class that impact the way people talk about women’s basketball. She and Jon Stewart discuss the WNBA’s journey to this moment of boosted popularity, and what new fans of the league should know about the women who have spent the last 30 years building it. #DailyShow #WNBA #MonicaMcNutt

There were girls worthy of coverage before Clark, according to Monica but they weren’t covered because nobody cared. Nobody can explain the “it factor” but Tiger Woods has it, Jordan has it, Ali had it, Beyoncé has it. Taylor Swift has it. Telling us that other athletes or the sport deserve this attention isn’t how this works. Some people get a disproportionate amount of attention or they propel a sport because they have something that compels us to watch or care about them. That person in female basketball is Caitlin, love it or hate it.

So much on point... People misunderstand that people who are for clark, are not against the people that came before her. It's understanding, that she is the vehicle that generates income. @@nucnuc7591 Here's the thing. I believe you when you say those words. The issue is that some of CC's fandom (again, not you) are absolutely disparaging the people that have come before Caitlin as an effort to build her up, which is unnecessary. Whatever you're reason is for loving Caitlin, have it, but there's no need to down those before her. If you like Caitlin's skill on the court, you'll find that there are in fact women that have been doing it at or better than Caitlin's level now and before, outside of her range. Caitlin's range is absolutely special. That's the point that's Monica is making and it's a direct response to the people I mentioned earlier in this comment, not you.

Well Indiana's home attendance is up by 72.5%. DC has been averaging 4k fans this season and Clark's away game in DC drew over 20k... such an increase that DC had to move the game to a bigger venue to accommodate them. She's bringing more eyes to the sport than there have ever been before. WNBA players have been very vocal about wanting better pay, and the way that is accomplished is through attendance, league revenue and generally increased interest. Clark has been an incredible boon to the league. It seems flat out ridiculous for people to discredit the popularity Caitlyn has brought while simultaneously demanding the benefits that increased popularity brings. She may not be the best player in the league right now, but she's EASILY the most lucrative.

Pushing and body checking are part of contact sports, and last I checked, basketball is a contact sport. As I said in my first response, if you have ever watched the WNBA, they are much more aggressive than the NBA, as Monica pointed out in the interview.
