I think there's a such thing as a "beginner" animal, cresties, leos, garter snakes, etc. But I hate the idea that just because you're new to the hobby you have to start there. If you put in the time, the work, the research, maybe mentor under someone, get whatever you want as long as you can care for it. The best animal for you is the one you'll dedicate yourself to and won't lose interest in. If everyone only got animals they were head over heels obsessed with animals would live much better lives overall in captivity. Great episode man! Had a real good time listening to/watching. Stay up bruh!

preciate you! i agree, the best one is the one you will put your whole heart and time into! i would say those are all beginner "level" animals. Not just animals reserved for beginners, if that makes sense lol. Its a discussion thats talked about alot, but somehow still not enough.

Yes! Makes perfect sense that's exactly what I meant.

Have you ever thought about doing a video on the Rusty monitor, or varanus semiremex? It is a mangrove dwelling lizard that eats crabs, lizards, and fish. It is the only small semi-aquatic monitor I could find, along with the Mitchell's monitor which is kind of like a pocket sized Mertens monitor that exhibits really cool hunting behavior. I think both lizards are really unique and deserve a lot more love and I can't seem to find any information on them so I was hoping you might have some.

semiremex are super interesting. I love their patterning. I agree, both they and mitchelli deserve more love, seems like it could be a good video topic !

Are Niles really Harder to keep than similar sized monitors like the Argus monitor? Or do they just get a bad rap because they are cheap and inevitably, they are the monitor that inexperienced people end up buying. I know they are flighty and like to bite, but are they really that much worse other monitors like the blue tail, argus, or mangrove monitor? It's hard for me to believe they are worse than a croc monitor. I think people tend to treat Nile monitors like lizard garbage just because they are affordable, but I think they are one of the most beautiful, unique, and interesting lizards in the world, and I want to know if it's worth keeping one once I have the experience. Thanks.

They are everything you described. Not lizard garbage at all. Theyre amazing. The reason we say that is because they are generally harder to work with because of how they get here. Theyre all imported. Manhandled, shoved in tiny boxes with arms bound, sent on a ship or plan, filled with diseases, parasites and wallowing in their own poo. Theyre hard wired to hate humans because humans took them out of their home and threw them into that situation. Monitors dont forget. The importation process is like abduction to all animals, but monitors are much more intelligent, and associate that experience with all people. If you dont put HOURS a day into them, you’ll end up with a 6-7 foot animal that hates you, and may subtract digits from your body. Anything captive bred has the stressful importation process out of the equation , so they start with a blank slate with humans.

They also require a massive room for an enclosure with a heated and filtered pond. Think bigger than your bedroom. Theyre units.
