Count me in 😁 So a few years ago " back in the analouge days" i split my Optus B3 satellite feed between my then Foxtel box providing 13.8V's up to my 10.7Ghz Lnb down converting between 1Ghz & 1.3Ghz to my high end Analouge Icom receiver that went from 30Mhz to 3Ghz non stop." Whilst flicking between 1.0Ghz & 1.3Ghz I stumbled across a retransmission of the Pacific oceanic 8.867Mhz transmission that I regularly listened to as well as the secondary retransmissionS for 5.643Mhz & 13.261Mhz I was wrapped the extra stuff I could hear on tje satellite & the increadible clarity that I could hear transmissions from Brisbane, Auckland, Nandi & Sanfran was just out of this world I was hooked then one day after a couple of years it all come to a screaming end when Optus turned off the Optus B3 Analouge transmissions in favour of digital transmissions & I didnt have a digital radio for many years after that to go and re chase these transmissions. As a part time commercial pilot I get to see a lot of the aviation communications infrastructure that is normally out of sight of the normal person & at of Melbourne's biggest airports ( Melbourne international also known as YMML & Morrabbin also known as YMMB) next to the control towers are 2 x Huge sat dishes clearly for sat comms. One thing that has become evident over the last few years in Aust is the amount of aircraft landing & taking off without "Voice comms" no doubt clearances are being given "Electronically" by way of data. It would be really cool if there was someway of they of us following your channel "Aviation Communicatiins Series" could share our findings with each other. I take it you know about liveatc(dot)net its a great way to monitor world wide atc comms on the web. Really looking forward to this series. Regards Wayne Melbourne, Aust.
@FrugalRadio
@FrugalRadio 3 года назад
Hi Wayne. Great to hear about your ability to pick up a satellite link of the HF feeds. That was a fun experiment to perform, and a great idea. I never tried booking up my satellite dishes to wideband scanners back then. Although I was able to monitor lots of news feeds and studio backlinks at the time. Interestingly a couple of the MWARA stations had their own HF frequencies. For example I heard that Shanwick had a direct HF link to Santa Maria which they used in preference to the telephone when coordinating with each other. I never received it, and only recently discovered from an Air Traffic Controller that it existed! It is nice that you've got access to what most folk don't see. As a private pilot I have been able to access such areas as well at times. Always fun! And yes, I know about the live ATC site and use it occasionally 😃

THANK YOU!! Radio started in my life at age 8. I'm now 69 so it's been a part of my core, so to speak. Very enjoyable to say the least. Teach someone young about a hobby that CAN include computers, etc. if desired. Add to someone's 'Pie chart of life Skills'. Amateur/Ham radio adds another, additional dimension - SPEAKING! Show the diversity available, OK? This is rarely in Primary, Secondary & most High Schools Science curriculums. Radio CAN be sexier than computers

Just wondering if you think the RSP1a has much better sensitivity than the RTL-SDR v3? I'm just wondering if it is worth getting the RSP1a as I already have two RTL-SDR v3s. The second v3 will be used to do some experiments with P25 phase ll decoding. Thanks for the great vids!
@FrugalRadio
@FrugalRadio 3 года назад
I haven't performed a direct side-by-side comparison of the two. With them running different software as well, it is a little difficult to do a good test. I'll say this though : in my location with many high power transmitter masts nearby, the extra filtering in the RSP1A is very beneficial, and allows me to have a cleaner signal a lot of the time.

@FrugalRadio
@FrugalRadio 6 месяцев назад
A VHF tuned antenna will work well for you then. You can make your own dipole, which is quite simple. Centre it on 127 MHz and it will work well across airband. If you'd rather purchase a pre made unit, try something like the following www.ebay.com/itm/354906366777?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0&ssspo=Y_4Jq2z_Rb-&sssrc=4429486&ssuid=&var=&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY For portable use, a VHF magmount, or even an amateur radio dual band antenna will work. Alternatively you can connect a two way or HAM radio shop, and ask for an antenna solution you can cut for 127 MHz. If money is no object, you can get a DPD base antenna.
@rickymunoz9389

Thanks for the help. I will look into both the Ebay and DPD base antenna items you mentioned. I would presume that those antennas, at least the from Ebay, can work with a Yaesu FTA-550L Pro-X handheld scanner as well, right?? @@FrugalRadio

The BCT15X uses a BNC connector. Not sure about the Yaesu. But if it is different, you can always use an adapter or pigtail.

Thanks for following along, and for your suggestion. At my current location I am very far from big lakes and ocean where there is lots of marine activity. So I probably won't cover this side of the hobby, until I'm visiting another area post pandemic.

Excellent. Was just going to say the 118-136 MHz band should yield plenty of activity in Belgium. I expect you'll also be able to receive some military airband communications as well. It is much harder to find the frequencies just by searching, but if you known anyone that can give you some active frequencies you may also find that interesting. They will be 225-400 MHz. You'll be able to see the TETRA signals in the 380-410 MHz band as well. If they are in the clear, you can use your SDR v3 to decode them. If you are near the ocean, try Marine Band from 156-163 MHz. If you are near cities, have a look for some private business radio traffic. If frequency allocations are generally similar across the globe you'll find them somewhere in the 400 MHz range. I would start searching 450-470 MHz, but there might also be activity in 410-430 MHz. Last time I was in Bruges was before SDRs were on the market, so my help is limited I'm afraid! Happy listening!

Ok i i think i have found them all, i was looking for videos that were actually labelled part 1 - 8 , as hearing you might be in Edmonton Canada could you suggest a type of club or training course to attend in Surrey area BC, Canada. As i,m very amateur with any radio operations but understand the airline operations quite well
@FrugalRadio
@FrugalRadio 2 года назад
I would recommend an online search for Amateur Radio clubs in BC. I had a quick look, and in Surrey there is an active club who are running on online basic course. This would result in you becoming an licensed radio amateur if you chose to pursue it, and would give you a good grounding on radio theory from which to further enjoy the hobby. Just some ideas. Please also share information regarding software setup for voice: - ProScan - RTLSDR-Airband For ACARS: - AcarSDeco2 Please describe different 1090 providers both commercial (FR24, FA, radarbox) and amateur (ADSBExchange, planeradar.ru). And "single receiver - multiple providers" configuration - that would help to increase coverage for most of them. And regarding HFDL: if received data can be shared with smbd else?

I'm in....Licenced Amateur from the UK....interested in air band since 1967 aged 13. Main airband interest now....VHF and keen on HF North Atlantic listening.....not as interesting now as pre data comms. I also have a PPL....and Aviation VHF operator licence.

Welcome to the channel Nick. It has been interesting observing the changes to HF communications now that may aircraft are using CPDLC. In this region of Canada, a lot of the high level VHF has gone the same way - aircraft neat check in with "Speedbird 43 on 134.9, CPDLC" which the controller acknowledges. And that's the last you hear. That was part of the reason I wanted to get into the data decoding. Now at least I can still see the instructions they are receiving from ATC!

I have an idea for one or more future videos. The topic would be: Everything you can do with just the RTL-SDR bundle kit (what you can do and a demo of how to do it). A follow up could be: What you can't do with just the RTL-SDR bundle and what you'd need to be able to do it. You could give at least two solutions for each, one a cheap solution (even if not the best) and and the more optimal (and likely more expensive) solution. It would be a great intro for noobs like me who are eager to learn and find new stuff to try.
