I honestly think Way of Survival is underrated. So much effectiveness boiled down into a single ki point-- Advantage on attacks with your Action, high AC, disadvantage on attacks against you, resistance to all damage if you do take something, AND a solid heal to act as Psuedo damage reduction after the fact. Except, damage reduction prevents damage before resistance; the heal comes after, so really you heal for 2x the base number, in theory. Sure you can't Patient Defense every turn but you don't have to, you only need to when you're under significant threat.

I would love to come up with a solid tree to see what Way of Survival might look like at level 20. Did this for Hoodlum Rogue and it's an absolute blast at later levels, heavy armor PAM rogue. Figured to keep them in line with other martial they'd have at their 14th level a feature that gives them an attack as part of their Uncanny Dodge reaction. Sucker Punch, I think we called it.

That sounds super cool. I played a party of all 4 monks, and I feel like Way of survival is pretty cool. However, the Way of the open hand knock prone is pretty strong as well as a 3x level heal. Cheers!

Btw Sylvan Elf gets proficiency in long and short sword and long and short bow so really less of a need for a martial weapon background if you go sylvan elf.

You mentioned lucky. Just throwing this out there. The more attacks you make the more valuable that reroll is (because it can turn misses into hits and crits). In the pen and paper game rerolling attack rolls of 1 is more beneficial than the half orc savage critical attacks ability, for example. And, as a tiny little Halfling having your fists and feet do 1D8 and 1D10 damage is pretty awesome!

Lowlife can be possible. For example, I made a monk inspired by Kyoshi from Avatar the Last Airbender. She was raised by criminals but tends to follow a code later in life as Avatar. She's ruthless, but she sticks to her job description pretty strictly. One could argue she's more chaotic than Lawful, but since 5th ed isn't so super strict about alignment, you can have a character that is pretty Lawful-ish and that's ok 😆 She just doesn't do typical thief stuff. She just unlocks things and disarms traps that are in dungeons or other places she's supposed to be exploring or clearing of danger.

Open hand monks ability to remove reactions from enemy casters spamming counterspelled, or allowing Allie’s to move without fear of opportunity attacks is nice.

i just dont really see when you would want to put a monk in your group unless you are not going to use a fighter/Zerker or paladin...from what i have seen early in this game you need someone to deal with traps and unlock doors...you need at least 1 guy with heals if not 2 and skipping on someone with heavy AE damage or roots and so on is just a mistake...so in a 4 man grp when do you actually want a monk...
@VaniverseGaming
@VaniverseGaming Год назад
Good Point - A monk can be a good tank if you roll stats. The way of survival monk can have a 22 AC at lv 1. They usually have a high Dex so if you take the correct background they could be your trap/door unklocker. Lastly at higher level their stun is brutal. Then can lock down an enemy very easily. Cheers!

I'm in a current playthrough with a Paladin (Motherland), Bard (Hope) that's my Trap/Lock & Healer, an Open Hand Monk, and lastly a Gnome Wizard (Shock). Working out ok so far, and fun once I figured out good synergies.

Way of the light might also be the way to go if you're playing a race that doesn't have dark vision (i.e. human).

What role would this character fill? I don't see them as a tank, healer, caster, or be able to unlock chests.
@VaniverseGaming
@VaniverseGaming Год назад
Monks are melee DPS and could be a great tank. The way of survival monk with some good rolls could get to a 22 AC by level 4 easily. Their stunning strike at lv 5 basically dismantles enemies so they cannot do anything. Cheers!

Do unarmed attacks count as a light weapon? I am curious if my unarmed monk build would work with Cloak and Dagger.
@VaniverseGaming
@VaniverseGaming Год назад
No - you have to be wielding a light weapon, fists do not count. Cheers!
@Matthias-pj6th
@Matthias-pj6th Год назад
You have to be using a Light *Weapon* , Unarmed isn't a weapon. But you CAN use a Light Monk Weapon (I.E. Shortsword, Dagger) to do you Main Action attacks with your Martial Arts die and still get Cloak and Dagger.
@VaniverseGaming
@VaniverseGaming Год назад
That is correct. Thanks Matthias for your response. Cheers!

Do martial weapons count as "Monk weapons" when the Monk has proficiency with martial weapons? The game is still downloading for me, but I'm trying to learn a few things while waiting.
@VaniverseGaming
@VaniverseGaming Год назад
No "monk Weapon" is a property on the weapon itself. Spears, Short swords and quarterstaffs are examples of monk weapons. Cheers!

@@VaniverseGaming So in other words, if they have a background/feat to equip a martial weapon, they can use it proficiently but it won't count as a "monk weapon" for the purpose of game mechanics?

seems weird to have a monk using a short sword. Will this still work just using fists?
@bvkroll
@bvkroll Год назад
The monk starts out doing pretty bad damage with fists, you can use a quarterstaff or something instead.
@VaniverseGaming
@VaniverseGaming Год назад
Monks fist attacks are 1d6 starting at lv 5 and considered magical at lv 6. However, if you have items that are magical, it makes sense to use them for the additional +1 to hit and damage. Cheers!

Can you still unarmed strike while duel welding 2 shortswords?
@VaniverseGaming
@VaniverseGaming Год назад
No. You need a free off hand to do unarmed strikes. “If you use your action to make an attack with an unarmed strike or monk weapon, you can make one unarmed strike with your bonus action.” If both hands have a weapon this does not work . Cheers!
@binolombardi

@@VaniverseGaming it should work. Unarmed strikes are not restricted to hands. Animation is even a kick. If this is true in the game it should be fixed.

Your explanation between 5e open hand monk and Solasta version doesn’t make sense. 5e adds one of the effects per successful hit when flurry of blows is used, which costs 1 ki to use anyways. Solasta is the same in that regard. There is no 5e requirement for additional ki points to make use of open hand technique. In fact if your description is correct regarding g open hand in Solasta being a toggle effect, and you can’t switch open hand techniques between attacks mid flurry, then it is worse than 5e.
@VaniverseGaming
@VaniverseGaming Год назад
Thanks for the fact check. I miss spoke on the open hand and KI. However, you can indeed switch the open hand effect between attacks so it is essentially just like 5e tabletop. Cheers!

While monk was the class that ever made me get into Advanced Dungeons & Dragons, it has degenerated into a class I would only ever play again, when paid € 500 per hour to live with the humiliation & ridicule. 🤣

Haha, I think some of the subclasses and the ability to short rest often since it is a video game makes a monk more fun in Solasta. However, I will say I played an entire party of monks to make a video, and man did I get bored. Of course having 40 stunning strikes was pretty awesome lol. Cheers!
