Mother abandoned him? More like they either killed her to kidnap him OR they just took him. These are very affectionate animals. They need physical touch. They cling to their mama for their first week of life. When they sleep, they sleep on their mama for at least the first 6 mo. Even after weaning they stay with their mama til they reach maturity, even after that, the females will still stay around mama. This baby is calm why he is being touched/snuggled. In the wild they huddle up to eachother, even the adults. They need physical affection. If you are not capable of giving it, then you shouldn't "rescue" (kidnap) one of these animals. I would Love to have one of these, but even if I were given the opportunity I would not do that. They are so sweet and cute, but I don't think they should be taken from their kind. A lot of times when these babies are kidnapped, the kidnapper keeps them til they outgrow their cuteness (in the kidnappers eyes) and they dump them off back at the park. Even if the mama is still alive, she doesn't remember the monkey. So there they are, low rank. They are then checked out by all the other monkeys. The monkeys that rank higher (not the highest ranking) would likely pick at and attack the orphaned monkey to try to prove themselves to the higher ranking members. If the orphan cries (like this one) and no other monkey tries to soothe them to quiet them, they will be attacked. Some are even killed, but only after suffering through abuse for the first day or two of being dropped off. These people steal these babies and use them for a meal ticket them dump them back off/trade them in for another baby monkey amd and do it all over again.
