This right here is time travel through music. I listen to this and I am a kid watching TV with my sis and my mum making dinner. I loved this show, the nostalgia it brings is almost painful.
Well said! Couldn't have put it better! The emotionality of the wonderful music and lyrics seems to intensify the yearning for our childhood that exists in so many of us...
Listening to these TV songs can be painful, but reconnects me back to happy times with my loved ones, sometimes it only feels like yesterday, and then I realise that I’m the same age as my dad would have been when we watched them together.
A Japanese show, based around a Chinese book, centred around an Indian religion, immensely popular in the western Countries. I wonder how many people who watched this show ended up with a more tolerant and open worldview. Certainly where my love of east Asian culture came from along with early 80s Japanese anime.
I always used to love watching this with my brothers back In the day when life was sweet no worries or anything, now when I watch or hear this song I get all misty eyed remembering when life was bliss.
Well said Caius! There is something really heart rending about this song! Probably the only glimpse of Buddhism that my sister and I ever had as children!
Hello ! , Yes and I learnt ending song on guitar recently becaus I loved it so much in childhood in Australia , but a much much longer version of this song must have been originally written, do you, Apple, know where I could possibly find it ? or does anyone else reading know? I hope this gets trasnlated correctly :)
It allowed me to get out of my chair without doing high kicks. Understanding that the show is over (at least till next week)A very well thought out choice which would now be talked over.
I think that's how Japanese ending themes usually are compared to opening themes, where the ending is a more slow, emotional piece of music compared to an opening serving to get the audience hyped. It just helped the English dub that the music was already written in English (exactly why they did that eludes me, maybe the English dub was intended to happen during the production of the show?)
@@TokuWaffle Idk, I always thought it was sad that they never got to India. The series was cancelled at the end of the second season, and I can remember sitting there stunned as the announcer said "that was the final episode of Monkey, next week . . . " as this song played in the background. Nine year old me was almost crying that Tripitaka, Monkey, Sandy and Pigsy never made it after all they'd been through
Friday evenings on BBC2 were reserved for this show when I was a kid. It marked the start of the weekend for me! It's still full of fun, humour, great stories and terrific characterisations.
me to along with the gentle touch a fine romance and news at ten all the fun of the fair when my mum was at bingo and Thames becoming LWT for the weekend
When I was really young I fell off a climbing frame and had to go to the hospital. My only memory is being disapointed that I missed watching Monkey that evening.
This is my all-time TV end theme favourite, and I remember they used to screen this on BBC 2 on Friday nights at 6:25 pm, and they don`t make these anymore now.
So good to see so many positive comments about this tv show. Even after 40 years it remains in so many people’s hearts. It’s funny how a foreign show dubbed over in English could be loved by so many over the world. And especially children. Nowadays if it’s not animated they won’t watch it. I miss the simplicity of those days when there were only two TV channels and as kids we learnt to watch shows with real actors instead of animation.
Used to get nagged at by my parents who wanted me to help put the shopping away, muuuummmm I'm watching Monkey magic... 2 mins later. I'm sat there with my mum and dad. This program was for all ages. Totally epic beyond words.
I feel what you’re all expressing in your comments. A strong reminder that nostalgia is generally as cruel as she is kind. She tends to offer a bitter-sweet taste of joy.
It totally takes me back when life was bliss,,no worries, and I had my family with me,,I did used to love monkey and hearing the ending song brings back good times ,,it sent tingles in my body ,,very sad about the lady monk ,I can’t spell her name lol,yup made me all misty eyed,,thank you for being a big part of my young life ,,xxx
Loved Monkey sooo much, it was incredibly unique. This outro music reminds me of being 10 years old, knowing that the next show (on BBC2, in the UK) was going to be something dull and adult, like the news! haha.
Thank you to the person who posted the full lyrics here, I spent my childhood thinking half the words to this song were something completely different, and i would rather not say what i thought some of them were,,, embarrasing. Hahaha
Based on Journey to the West . A book of the tales of Monkey and friends . Traveling to India/Nepal boarder to obtain enlightenment from Buddha . They realise , that it is in taking the journey not coming to the destination is were enlightenment can be found.
This closing song and the imagery brings back so many memories. It's a pity that the characters never made it to India so the show never had a proper conclusion. Years later, I learned that Monkey was a Japanese series filmed on location in China so it was a very expensive production. Some reckon that because of that, they ran out of money before they could finish it.
My Grandfather, David Weir (0:28) was the script writer responsible for the English adaptation of Monkey. Me and my brother used to sit and watch every episode on video, we absolutely loved it of course. I probably never would have seen it otherwise as I was born in 95. Sadly my grandfather passed some years ago, but it is amazing to read about how many of you loved this show.
My parents practically brought me up on monkey magic and I wouldn't change it for the world, fantastic show. I'm 18 now and I think I'm going to rewatch it since I have the boxset somewhere...
always wait to the end of this song before turning the show off, it's just a really nice song? shame when my dad turns it off before it can finish, sometimes i just wanna hear it.
As an Australian growing up in the 80's this was ideal after school entertainment. End of school ,get your milo and bowl of ice cream or cereal and settle in. High drama as monkey battled all the demons and summoned flying clouds.
Tuve la oportunidad de ver ésta serie cuando tenía unos 12 años de edad a mediado de los años 80 y a mi madre y hermanos y a mis amigos de infancia nos gustaba mucho siento nostalgia cuando escucho el tema de Gandhara
I recently got the soundtrack album by Godiego, and it was good to hear this song. Better than the song they used for Season 2 (Holy and Bright or something)
The end of the episode was always a bit of a downer, it was so good you never wanted it to end, but the music kinda made it ok. Always loved the music too.
A long time ago when men were all babes There was a land of the free Fantasy and dreams Were its untouched wealth And goodness and love were real Each man desires to reach Gandhara His very own utopia In the striving, in the seeking soul Man can see Gandhara In Gandhara, Gandhara They say it was in India Gandhara, Gandhara The place of light Gandhara Though long ago and far Beyond the winding road Always beyond every bend A beautiful land still waits for the few Who make it to the very end Each man drsires to reach Gandhara His very own utopia In the striving, in the seeking soul Man can see Gandhara In Gandhara, Gandhara They say it was in India Gandhara, Gandhara The place of light Gandhara In Gandhara, Gandhara They say it was in India Gandhara, Gandhara The place of light Gandhara Released October 1, 1978, Lyrics: Yoko Narahashi, Music: Yukihide Takekawa, Arrangement Mickey Yoshino、Godiego(JPN)
Mates, I used to run around in the Sherbrooke forest with my 'monkey stick'. Don't tell mum I broke her edging grass cutting thingy.........hehe! Now I am living it. Really......my channel is.......ABAREBUGYO
I was a christian teenager then I became an atheist for a long time, after reading a lot of science (especially quantum psychics) I'm heading towards Buddhism. Einstein thought it would be the only religion to survive the 21st century anyway.
This show aged well. The dub over makes it even better and I'm one to only had use dubover for anime. It majes it gunnier but also matches the faces better than the dubover nowadays. I'm 25 and I like this show justas much as I did a child.
the man who did the English adaptation for Monkey-David Weir, had some years previously submitted a storyline for Tom Bakers Doctor in Doctor Who called 'Killers of the Dark". when he turned up to the script meeting with producer Graham Williams and Script Editor Anthony Read. He was having marital difficulties and turned up quite drunk, so they had to turn his script down.
Kindly ride yourself of hateful viewpoints, or at least keep them to yourself. Please don't post them here, as i will remove them. Enjoy the music, and the memories.

GODIEGO had two keyboardists who could compose, and since their debut, they have been a rare type of band in the Japan, singing mainly English lyric songs. Based on the catchy melody of Paul McCartney follower Yukihide Takekawa, they were a very unique and creative band that mixed songs from Mickey Yoshino's arrangement of progressive rock tone to a funky jazz arrangement with horns. This trend has remained consistent since their debut in 1976 with their debut album " SUITE NEW GENESIS ", 1977's 2nd album " DEAD END " and 1979's 4th album " OUR DECADE ", and everyone who listens to the songs on these albums will understand how talented the band was. Their third album was released as a soundtrack for TV dramas “MONKEY” around 1979 in the UK, Australia and other countries, so the two theme songs were known outside of Japan.
