In this tutorial I demonstrate how to make a monkey fist keychain. The monkey fist is an iconic nautical knot. Using the knot you can also produce a nice looking keychain, hence this tutorial :).
So in the video I show you how to tie the monkey fist knot and then finish it up into a keychain using two distinct methods (an easy method and one a bit more advanced).
Enjoy the video!

I liked it very much, thanks for the gaucho knot!! I would only suggest, (only because it would help me greatly), using two colors for the gaucho, it might make it easier to follow, that being said, thanks again, great knot.
@djmj12714

I think that's why Mark used different coloured binding on each of the working ends.
@sonatalittle5249
@sonatalittle5249 5 лет назад
I can’t tell if he’s flipping the center strings that are holding the monkey fist, so it appears that both strands are being fed through the same loops. Is that not correct? I think that’s why the other commenter was saying to use different colors. Once it’s knotted it’s hard to tell where one strand begins and the other ends, and which is the right and left sides. And when the hands cover the work, one loses sight of the organization.
@sonatalittle5249
@sonatalittle5249 5 лет назад
It would help if the center and the working ends were all different colors (paint or highlighter) so you could more easily follow the pattern of which cord gets looped over and under the other strands.

I like this knot very much but it seems like the marble could shatter after being dropped or cracked if hit hard enough. A razor sharp edge could result, not pleasant for the carrier or an unfortunate soul who pestered for a knot on the head. A wood core throws quite well with light line attached to it.

Thanks Mark, I love your work, and I’ve been watching for a long time. I have to ask you, that marlin spike is one of the nicest I’ve seen, what brand is it. Not many high quality knife companies are making them anymore. The nicest one I’ve seen recently was a Camillus from the late 60’s with the box, when they were still being made in NY state. Beautiful knife, but it was over $200. It was new in box, never used. $200 is a bit steep though.

Mark... how about a 4 strand Gaucho tutorial? I'm coming up empty handed looking for one. Cheers! I presume the Gaucho knot can be made longer by increasing the number of initial wraps around the core strands, as long as it's an odd number?

@@brettgozdeck508 The rope may look like an ordinary piece of rope but if you work with it, you will notice the difference. You won´t find this hard lay on ropes in hardware store or any boat.
