Monkey Man Film Review (and why Netflix dropped it...)

Against all odds, Dev Patel has been able to release Monkey Man to a wide audience. Filmed during the COVID lockdown on an island in Indonesia with strict quarantine, the project was to be distributed by Netflix, until they decided against releasing the project on their platform. Thankfully, Jordan Peele and Monkey Paw Productions stepped in and saved the day.
Monkey Man is directed by Dev Patel, who also stars in the film.

I admire Dev Patel’s passion behind the camera and emotionally charged performance in front of the camera. The action was fun at times but a little shaky and choppy more often than I would’ve wanted. The movie also dragged a lot for me in the middle. I liked it and enjoyed my time, but I think it is being a little overhyped. Thats just me though. Great review!

I would tend to agree! I did find myself wishing the camera would let me breathe at times, but those moments were few and far between. Thanks for the comment!

I can definitely see people wanting to tread lightly around India during an election year. It doesn't take much, just look at what Paatal Lok went through after its release. Too funny that out of 276 subscribers suddenly many turn out to be very passionate Modi supporters.

As I understand it, Netflix was one of the last holdouts against censorship in India but even they caved. This film is content being what it is basically a giant middle finger to the BJP while it only would have gotten them more in hot water with the government. I'm sure they were afraid of government action against them in what is possibly want to be biggest potential markets in the world. Cowardly but understandable. I still don't like it though. India deserves this film.

I am always fasinated when foriegners do a commentary on Indian politics by listening to the echo chambers they want to believe in,(both right and left). Calling BJP/RSS extremist is akin to calling the Republican party during Regan era an extremist group, and nearly 45% of Indians who vote for them as uneducated masses who need to be taught about their own politics. If you dig a little bit deeper you will come to understand such things have a history and precedent, and while The ruling party can't be called a liberal party, it is certainly not dictatorial, it just that social and political understanding of such concept like nationalism varies so rapidly between west and rest i.e, colonizers and colonies that they are unable to understand that natioosm was the plank on which many colonized countries got their independence, when Indians say a party is nationalist party it is not meant as an insult, rather it meant to indicate that the party focus more on National level politics like hawk on defence, economy, foreign relations and infrastructure. Moreover Indian society is still in the early stages of development, it took America more than 200 years to reach where it is today India's experiment with democracy is not even 100 years old and It have still to process the trauma of partition and loot of colonization, which have made its masses savage with higher propensity of mass violence. what west media will not tell you is that there have been major riots and terrorist attack in nearly every year since the independence of India, and those events have seen a drastic reduction ( not elimination post 2010) , and since most of of that is during BJP rule people give them credit for the same, The govt have also done major drive in cutting redtapism and providing access to banking and digital payments to almost every Indians, there are achievements in defense and in the sector of economy. I can go on , but what I mean is that the issue highlighted by media in the west are not the real issue with BJP Manipur and electoral bonds , censorship while an issue is not how west perceives it to be. So please either stay silent or do your research before airing out your uninformed opinion about India and its democracy. Similarly the term Hindu nationalist is being thrown like it is equal to german Nazism, when more so than not these two concepts are independent in Indian context, and while a minority(a very vocal minority) but minority do believe in such lunacy, no one seriously thinks them as extremist in traditional sense of the word. Also the author of the post convinently forgets to mention that this kind of movie making where you are directly demonising an ideology is a textbook definition of propoganda, Patel chose to use symbols associated with a political party in power, and then decided to release movie before General elections. The point of the movie could have been made w/o demonising a particular party , and hence suggestions are made to make appropriate changes(we don't know what changes, if they are unjust I one could argue that is just throttling free specch, but if it is just asking to remove such ancillary refrences I would say it is more than justified). Also those warriors are not transgender, hijras are mostly intersex people, though trans people sometimes also find community with them.

@@PointsofReviewBe prepared for a barrage of comments defending the establishment and calling the film some kind of 'propaganda' (when it hasn't even been released here yet, and likely won't even be before the elections). Meanwhile we have actual propaganda films releasing almost every week, voices of opposition being silenced, ministers being bought, democratic institutions being compromised - but no, a harmless action film made by a British-Indian is apparently a 'threat to democracy'.

Look if you would compare that party to the Republicans then they too would probably co-opt the words of a God for their own personal power on Earth which coincidentally is kind of what this movie is giving a middle finger to among other things. And by the way, did you really just put up a defense of religious and ethno nationalism... And what's your defense? Really wait? We're young and the English hurt us really bad, so it's okay if we're a little Intolerant? Seriously, your country survived the colonialism and you're afraid of mean words and political dissent. You either think your country is incredibly fragile or you think your chosen party's grip on power is. Either way you don't have my sympathy. And you're right on one thing. I really don't understand you. You're supposedly from India and in a forum about monkey man, you wrote nearly a full-term paper and not a single word about how cool this film was. I apologize if that's rude, but honestly I'm quite tired and autistic so I can be quite blunt.

What modi have done/not done to manipur, electoral bond scam, demonetization, arresting opposition leaders jst before election, converting indian media to his pet, china taking our lands in ladakh and arunachal pradesh... etc are great things he have done. By controlling media, Modi is very successful in securing his fake image. No offence brother, Country with 120 crore will always have alternatives, but it will be hard if our country moves in this pace towards dictatorship

The thing is besides the religious fanaticism, the BJP has done great with respect to infrastructure, poverty reduction, development, making technology easily available, military advancements, and foreign policy, so Modi will most likely be back for a third term, but the relgious fanaticism is definitely there and problematic and I wish it wasn't because it would benefit India, also terrorism is almost non existent now in India, we had 0 attacks for 8 years until a couple of weeks a go where there was a bomb blast in a cafe with ISIS links
@PointsofReview
@PointsofReview 3 месяца назад
This fits pretty well with the historical precedent. Most often, leaders/parties with religious fanaticism bring positive change in many measurable areas, which of course leads to citizens "tolerating" oppression of certain groups, further amplifying the power of the leader to enact their covert manifesto. By no means am I an expert in Indian politics, but it is certainly interesting.
@masa6768
@masa6768 3 месяца назад
@@PointsofReview Well if the previous party had focused on development, then we wouldn't be here, the alternative is very incompetent and they are a huge reason the BJP is in power, and tbf BJP has been fairly secular at the government level but a lot of their members and leaders at the lower level have been very hateful and fanatic openly, and that's the problem imo, I don't understand why they allow that since it doesn't benefit anyone
@ashwinipethe4222
@ashwinipethe4222 3 месяца назад
@@PointsofReviewwhat fanaticism are you talking about? BJP is not setting any new standards for any kind of extremism. Crazy shit has been happening in this country since independence. Nothing new or extraordinary is happening under BJP raj. Only different thing about BJP is that they don't appies and pander to 2 particular sarcastically peaceful communities and preach equality for everyone. In fact I would say India doesn't even have a quote on quote right wing. We have socialists and saffron socialists in this country. If you take out all the Hindu stuff their 2014 election manifesto would feel identical. Same old socialism. The only change in the society is that Because of BJP some people have found it easier than earlier to call out pseudo secular bs that Congress has been peddling since independence. So people are expressing their views through art and content more openly cause it's not getting outright banned unlike congress era. So I'm really not sure what generic fanaticism you are talking about here ....
@masa6768
@masa6768 3 месяца назад
@@PointsofReview It's important to understand that India has 220 muslims, that's not really a minority, so you'll find religious fanaticism from that side as well, it's in their books to be against idolatry and idol worship, and idols play a huge role in Indian culture and Hinduism, Pakistan was created for the Muslims of British India, and India for the Hindus, but India almost has more Muslims than Pakistan, while the Hindus of Pakistan and Bangladesh (which was part of Pakistan till 1971) have reduced greatly because of forced conversion or killings, I'm just trying to give you more context as to why certain type of feelings could exist in society, I don't advocate for any of them though
@masa6768
@masa6768 3 месяца назад
@@PointsofReviewand to give more context about the politics of India, our opposition party (Indian National Congress or simply called Congress) is run by one single family, the Gandhis, Rahul Gandhi is the face of the party only because he is part of the family, he is, to put it nicely, very incompetent, he just can't match up in the mass appeal that Modi has as a Prime Minister face, I wish the party would kick the Gandhis out and make other competent and deserving people run the party and be the face of it, as they are the biggest reason BJP keeps winning
