Many bookshelves struggle to play 50hz with authority, heck even 70hz. And lets not even talk about distortion. Even with a sub like this that will cover half an octave to an octave below, it will make all the difference, even better when you high pass your puny lil speakers. Glad to see you reviewing subs again Erin, you are on the right track emphasizing just on FR and distortion. That is basically what normal people need to know.
@12P14D22C
@12P14D22C Год назад
most bookshelves struggle to play 120hz with "authority" you need a pretty decent driver in a good designes volume for compression free volumes in those frequences without loss in detail and a impulse response that alows the speaker to even remotely sound like the instruments it tries to repdroduce. that being said. subwoofers these days cant provice that as well. they are tuned completly wrong for it. they are tuned for spec sheets. meaning going low in frequency in loudness but not in any other metric. because its nice to show that spec online. thats why its so "common" compared to speakers etc to build your own sub. because for 300€/$ and a woodbox you can beat 5000€/$ subs easiy, without even knowing what the fuck ur doing. if you know what ur doing ... then the market has no answer for your diy sub.

Hmmm, my understanding of what people tend to mean with "fast" subwoofer tend to be related to time domain rather than frequency domain, as in how fast does the subwoofer start/stop playing, so in practical terms the details in the bass gets less smeared. But regardless, thanks for a good review! :)

@andrewskaterrr
@andrewskaterrr Год назад
The issue is people use “fast” when there’s less low end bass, like you get with ported subs. It’s not accurate but that’s what they say. An accurate description would be low group delay, but arguably it won’t be as audible.
@markpocock183
@markpocock183 Год назад
Thanks for calling out "fast bass". I think what people are often reacting to is the presence or absence of resonances, either in the speaker itself or due to room modes. It you look at a waterfall plot with resonances, they extend the time domain response out significantly...which results in lack of bass definition.
@stephenyoud6125
@stephenyoud6125 Год назад
Agreed, Danny Richie covers this pretty well and basically defines it as how quickly the cone can start and stop. And exemplified well by the open baffle servo controlled subs
@mikelanier5617
@mikelanier5617 Год назад
Fast bass to most is generally the speed in which the driver can start and stop while staying controlled and accurate. Often associated with an amplifier's damping factor to achieve a very non-muddy , articulate response to each impulse signal sent from the amp with a sense of "speed" from the piston like control. Simply lowering the crossover often can tighten up the response to aid in a sense of speed and accuracy. The bass note is finite but the way the woofer reproduces it can sound slow and flabby depending on equipment and tuning. Love the vids Erin ❤👍
@KravchenkoAudioPerth
@KravchenkoAudioPerth Год назад
Um I know that you have heard this many times. But there is not one bit of reality in the statement that damping factor controls the woofer. It is completely in design of the driver. How quickly it starts or stops is all due to the driver having a powerful enough motor to start quickly and stop quickly. The amplifier gets the cone moving. The drivers suspension does the stopping.
@gregorymorrill7558
@gregorymorrill7558 Год назад
@@KravchenkoAudioPerth The driver's suspension doesn't stop the cone quite in the way you suggest in that last sentence. (at least until near destruction of the driver)If it did the thing would sound horrid. The suspension is a compliance factor and a X-mech limiter. The motor/magnet stops the driver. That is the whole reason they exist. How 'quickly' the motor stops and starts the driver is a direct relationship between the transducer and the enclosure(or lack of enclosure), it is not entirely in the driver's design alone. Any transducer that accurately reproduces a frequency will stop and start 'fast' enough wether the motor is large or small. When the transducer can not, that is when you get frequency fall off and or cone break-up along with harmonic and IMD distortion. Barring any of those things the bass is 'correct' and the motor is stopping and starting quickly.
@gregorymorrill7558
@gregorymorrill7558 Год назад
When the driver can no longer stop and start in a controlled and accurate manner what you get is not slow or fast bass or medium speed bass but rather frequency response errors and HD+IMD distortion. (in other words the drivers has exceeded it's limits)For example a subwoofer outside of its frequency responce limits may fall off in frequency response level(SPL) or it may have cone break up - even severe break up in case of many metal drivers, it may also add extra energy in the form of HD+IMD. Perhaps a small woofer outside of it's output level limits will compress the signal and thus start to sound 'off'. It could be the system is tuned to have a huge boost or it has a other poorly measuring frequency responce errors. All of this is measurable and none of it has to do with 'fast' bass in typical 'hifi' terms. Bass detail is cued from the midrange so if your bass doesn't sound 'fast' and there are no tuning errors like a boosted responce or undealt with room modes then check your integration with the mids.
@mikelanier5617
@mikelanier5617 Год назад
Maybe the damping factor works differently Down Under" ? Benchmark Audio has a complete white paper discussion on their site called "Audio Myth - Damping Factor Isn't Much of a factor". Being recognized as one of the best in amplifier technology (in both design and performance derived by ear and measuring equipment), and they explain damping factor very well. The driver is obviously not stopping on its own accord but by the electrical control from the amplifier. Simply put, the positive voltage is forward and negative is reverse with stopping being a matter of impedance and current control done by the amplifier. Certainly, the Xmax of the woofer and the voice coil gap play an important part to achieve the best results, although even exceptional woofers will still sound rather sloppy with an amplifier that does not possess the needed attributes of high current delivery and woofer control by using an amplifier with proper negative feedback and once again, an effective "damping factor". So, no, I am not at all concerned with the midrange when discussing a subwoofer's speed and accuracy. The amplifier, woofer, phase, crossover frequency and placement are generally the most necessary variables for achieving the best results in overall bass response. Try a Hegel amplifier if you want to experience bass that is exceptionally well controlled and even called "grippy and fast bass" by many owners and reviewers paired with very different speakers. Hearing each individual note from a double bass or the speed of a blazing double-kick drum and not just a smeared, non-defined and sloppy reproduction is why we say things like "fast bass". Rock on and remember music is subjective, but Ohm's Law and Thiele -Small parameters are not ! 🤔

@@gregorymorrill7558 We are dancing on the same floor. A suspension is basically a shock absorber. More or less two types available as linear as possible in the spring return factor of the damper, and a progressive spring factor damper. Progressive as in the farther you push the greater the restoring force. How long have you been designing drivers? Mark

I feel like the THX EQ settings have limiters thar are too aggressive. I would rather allow a bit of distortion that I will probably not hear. 😁

Erin, great vid. What a nice system for someone on a tight budget. I believe fast bass refers to how quickly bass notes start & stop. It is a measure of stored energy in the driver, filter & cabinet. This may be simulated in SPICE on a PC using a bass sinewave tone burst modified by the response of the electrical filters in the plate amplier (details supplied by the sub manufacturer). Then apply the tone burst to the sub using a function generator, measure with a microphone on an oscilloscope & compare with the simulation. Small deviation from the simulation is a measure of fast bass. Alternately just compare outputs from many different subs under the identical conditions to find ones that have fast bass!

5:10 "You can't have 'fast' bass." What we mean by "fast bass" is how quickly the cone returns to its resting position after the cessation of the signal. So yes, some woofers are "faster" than others, and you can hear the difference.

Nice review - keep the sub reviews coming! Would love to see a Kef KF92 or KC62 review. Question: isn't group delay configuration-dependent? If the bass is out of phase with the higher frequencies, wouldn't that be a good definition of "slow bass" that degrades the listening experience? Bonus question: since theres negligible directivity index at these frequencies, does that mean DSP can completely solve these phase mismatch issues?

Unless you have only 3 foot ceilings 🙇, it's more like 125-150 sq.ft. Think a 10x12 room. Also worth noting, at 50 Hz, 95 dB is only 65 dBA. What matters for human hearing is dBA (a -weighted decibels). That 65 dBA is fine for such a small room, but for people who like to crank it up to 70-75 dBA, these may sound under-powered on the bass end. But I think you wouldn't want over ~80 dBA in a home, that's enough for prolonged exposure to cause hearing damage.

"fast" base is a way to convey what the sound likes to someone. the step respnse of the sub is a thing and there is a "fast" and a "slow" step response or impulse respnse ( iam from germany, the german word is Sprungantwort or Impulsantwort ) so no, 60hz is not 60hz if you try to reproduce it with a sub. Because your at standy, doing nothing, now you get the signal 60hz, how long does the sub need to get to move? Moment of inertia. Also then how smooth is the acceleration and deceleration of the chassis? 60hz with a sinus signal would mean that your membrane would need to move at the same speed at all times. but physics tell u that u need to slow down to 0 before u can go in the other direction. So there is no linear speed 60hz while a resonating instrument could "output" exactly that. So its nice that ur not trying to bs everyone. overall really liked the video. Having the driver out of the case and showing the bracing and mentioning it is very appreciated. most dont and its fucking importent and good that theres a bracing there. Could be a LOT better ofc, but its a very cheap sub so its absolutely great that theres atleast anything. Just either make sure ur absolutlely right on what u say or dont talk in absolutes like "thats physics" everyone makes mistakes and i do them daily, if not hourly myself so you could call me an expert on this topic ;) the overall understanding of how sound works is insanely minimal in the community that enjoys speakers. well they want them to have great sound and not get a phd in sound reproduction so thats understandable but i want better producs so i try to chime in where i can. keep it up, got a sub and a like from me. hope u understand my point.

I listen to mostly vinyl and using one of my best sounding records I have, Larry Carlton Discovery, I set the phase to 180° and the crossover to 60hz. @@ryansemplexyz the psw-10 sub has limited use obviously, where are you going to get a “real”sub for 150 bucks even used. My whole point was if your requirements are low, and the kind of performance you need is to get down to 35 Hz, then don’t buy a cheap 8” sub. As a matter fact, I use a psw-10 with a Yamama sound bar on a flatscreen via hdmi in a small room, and I find it complements the sound bar fine, I have no issues with either. I wasn’t going to spend over $300 for movie sound. Since I got both items at half price, and my HT requirements were low, I see no issue. It should go without having to say that “your mileage may vary.” Edit: I forgot to add that I would never ever buy a subwoofer like this for a pair of stereo speakers, because I don’t even buy stereo speakers that don’t already have at least this level bass extension, so it would be a worthless add on for me.

Subwoofers are best used with parametric eq. And with eq one should place the sub in one of the corners. The extra loading given from the placement will give more headroom and thus less distortion for the same volume. The ”sound character” of a sub is just about the frequency response in room so parametric eq is a must if one want the best sound, and the corner placement will make eq work even better.

Got two of the 5.1 systems from your link. Replaced my Klipsch R14S height speakers. The satellites work great as height speakers in my living room and they are a third the size of those silly bipole R14S. I hung up the remaining 5.2 in the bedroom, but still need to get a 5.2 reciever for that project to report on it. I wish the subs hit 20 hz though... Maybe if I put two of them right up in a corner they could get some "room gain?" Will play around and find out I guess. I dont even have a tv in there yet *I also think eq mode #2 hits lower than the thx mode according to your buddy Joe, so fingers crossed

Yep, always wondered what tight bass was. Sounds like “high bass” to me. That said, I imagine that a servo-controlled subwoofer would reduce overhang in a ported enclosure.
@isoslow
@isoslow Год назад
Remember: 8 inch with an expensive driver in a 30 L ported enclosure is worse than a cheaper 12 inch driver in the same 30 L, but sealed. So if people are looking for a smaller sub they should know this.

To me, I always believed fast or tight bass is how quickly it can change different frequencies without it sounding "flabby" due to resonance, noise, damping, magnet strength, and speaker coil retention strength.

It's odd that you discount 'fast' as a legitimate term to describe bass, and then acknowledge that group delay exists. Group delay is measured in milliseconds... fast refers to the time dimension. Extreme group delay from a sub sounds like the bass is out of synch (later in time, or slower) than the beat of the song. Fast is 100% a relevant term to describe bass.
@ErinsAudioCorner
@ErinsAudioCorner Год назад
Frequencies are inversely proportional to time. Thus, a 60Hz frequency is a 60Hz frequency. A 60Hz frequency cannot be faster than 60Hz… otherwise it wouldn’t be 60Hz. Group delay is a time delay that varies with frequency and can have very different values with ported speakers over half an octave. But, more than that, is the phase relationship, and how that interacts with mains when blending the two.
@joshhaimes
@joshhaimes Год назад
@@ErinsAudioCorner I agree with everything in your reply but I'm not sure why you bring up frequency when group delay doesn't change frequency. Anyhow, yes, group delay changes phase relationship between frequencies and in severe cases, it sounds like the bass is lagging behind in time. 'Fast' is used to describe low latency/low group delay/in-phase bass.

I think 8inch subs work best with bookshelf speakers. They usually have way more mid bass kick than bigger subs.

If running bookshelves in a medium or smaller room 8 inch sub is the way to go. Blends right into your sound easy. And just elevates the whole system

Its hard to admit but I almost burned focal cub evo subwoofer when I worked in hifi store. It just couldn't keep up even in stereo, dali opticons 6 had much much higher spl. I wouldn't consider 8inch subwoofer as a subwoofer SD is to small to make a difference compared to the rest of the speakers. It quickly started smelling so we had to turn it off.

No there is not. The speaker either reproduces the tone or it makes a different tone via harmonics and IMD. Yes you can tune/have a system that has bloated(extra bass at certain frequencies, however if you dialed that boosted area back via eq the same bloated system would sound 'tight'. This is simple physics. Group delay could in theory cause the tone to lag behind the rest of the output enough to sound delayed however my understanding is that would have to be extreme to even be slightly audible at certain times to certain golden ears. I often think 'tightt and fast' bass are just bass output reduced in SPL levels enough that the listener 'feels' that instead of it being a bit light in output level it is instead 'tight, fast'.
@flashhog01
@flashhog01 Год назад
@@gregorymorrill7558 The difference between a fast speaker next a slow subwoofer is extremely easy to hear, nobody needs “golden ears” to hear such a thing, it has nothing to do with SPL and cannot be fixed with EQ. I find it strange anyone would disagree with something so simple.

Could you compare or explain how these FR test results compare to the 10" subs you used in your comparison video? I have a thx certified receiver and currently have a Sony sa-w2500. It's showing it's age with only a 60W amp, and I'm looking to upgrade. I don't want to lose any of the low end this sub produces, which isn't really much. I'm thinking the monoprice 8" wouldn't be an upgrade.

If it doesn't go down to 17Hz then you and your neighbours are missing out on weird psychological effects of infrasound. ;) Tbh, I haven't noticed much in the very bottom few audible Hz in musical content. Perhaps in some genres though. And definitely in movies.

You totally misunderstand a "description" of the quality of bass that's reproduced by a subwoofer vs the "book definition" of frequencies played by a sub when speaking of a "fast" bass quality. IOW, a description by way of metaphor is not equal to the "scientific" explanation of FR in a sub. Though your videos are great - you've totally missed the point of the description of "fast".......
