Hi Paul, It’s been a couple months since I last talked with you about your two AD-941 uncrating videos. The timing of this 3rd video is incredible. I ordered my AD-941 back in May 2021 and I was finally able to pick it up 3 days ago in Sacramento-Ca. I added the aluminum planer extension and mobility kit. It was relatively easy to roll off the pallet and down the ramp I made and into my shop. I needed a friend to stand on the outboard fork of the pallet jack while holding the table vertical to keep the right side of the base from dragging on the shop floor. I’ve not installed the mobility kit yet. The salesman told me twice in the last 6 months that with mobility kit installed I could still use the narrow Euro pallet Jack to maneuver the machine in my shop. My question to you is: Don’t the rear wheels on mobility kit prevent you from sliding the pallet jack into place to lift and move the machine? I thought I could move the machine with either method while the mobility kit is installed. What is your experience? Thanks again for this new video. PS: I also think the lame metal blade guard behind the fence is too clunky and could have been designed much better also. If you eventually get a 3D printed solution for a better guard that you like, I would love to get in on that also. Rick White in Santa Rosa-Ca.

Rick, Welcome to the AD-941 club! I agree with you that unless you fabricate some heavy duty brackets, the mobility kit will keep you from using the pallet jack. The details around how to add two bolts to the rear of the machine base that facilitates the use of a pallet jack works well, but the bolts would need to be much longer to work when the wheels for the mobility kit are installed. Plus I fear the deflection of said bolts at that length would be excessive. If you were to fabricate a pair of heavy duty brackets to use in place of the bolts - it might work. Good luck!

Well, I made a few things with it, but I sold it and am upgrading to a 20" J/P combo. The wait is on!

Great timing! I'm currently planning out an upgrade to my shop to a new J/P or separates later this year. I have a Hammer A3 31, and suffice to say, I won't be going Hammer anything from now on - way too many issues with my current unit. For Slider, I went with a 3 phase SCM SI 400 Nova, and while it's awesome, the lack of accessories available is a real pain when compared to Felder group! Lots of DIY solutions, or pay SCM bonkers money (a simple aux miter fence for example is $1800 here in the states, in London it's 350 pounds - about 7 bills to buy and ship here). For new J/P, I'm considering the 941/951, but also the FS41es and FS52es from SCM/Minimax. I'm also considering going separates - a Cantek P508HV is about 10k, and good used jointers crop up fairly often. Do you have any regrets not going with a 20" machine? I'll never need to joint 20" - 12" is probably fine as well as I surface glue up's on the drum sander (woodmaster 38), but I've wanted a wider planer plenty often, coming from the 12" Hammer. So that's where I'm at. If I go separates, I'll probably have to downsize from a 38 to a 24/25" drum or wide belt to fit a separate planer. If I go combo, not sure I can fit a 20" where I have my jointer currently. Really only interested in German/Italian, or Cantek (top of the line import). Would love to chat sometime if you're up for it on pros/cons of the 941.
@pkwoodworking
@pkwoodworking 2 года назад
Matthew, I agree that the plethora of accessories from Felder is a real benefit of the platform. As you can see from the video, I do not have any room for separates in my current shop. I am always thinking of bigger! PK@pkwoodworking.com if you want to chat more about the AD-941.

I come back to this video every once in a while to find different nuggets that I can benefit from. One thing I will mention that I don't like about the AD 941 is adjusting it level to the floor. There is only one side (back left) that has an adjustment; the other three sides you are left to mess around with shims. The frustrating part is each of the other three sides has what looks like a beefed up area for adjustable legs and has holes drilled in each or these areas. Unfortunately, the holes are not threaded making it more challenging (but not impossible) to use threaded adjusters. I would certainly love to hear from others out there if I have missed something very obvious on solving this problem.

You are right on the money. When it comes to these machines, I am starting to feel that the contact patch of the feet is important to limit vibration. Adding feet to the machines was a solution for me in my garage shop because of the slope of the concrete. Since my new shop will be flat (At least that is what the contract says and what is set up for the pour in 2 days) I will no longer use these feet and instead use large blocks of maple if I need to raise them higher. On my kappa 400 x-motion and the profil 45z x-motion I have installed adjustable feet that like you say require nuts on the top and bottom of the threaded part of the foot. I feel like it makes the machines feel less robust, as I do not think they were intended to be supported like this from Felder.
@steinbierz
@steinbierz 11 месяцев назад
@@pkwoodworking Good luck with your pour and your new shop. I have been going back and forth on adding 1200 sq. ft. onto my shop but it is the price of the concrete (including flat work for a trailer pad, additional other parking, etc.) that is really driving the price up and I am dipping into retirement funds to do it so that is giving me pause. Related to your comments about the pads on the Felder, I agree and, like your existing garage shop, I have the same thing in my steel building shop with the floor being unlevel. I have 1/4" and 1/8" steel stock that I was able to use to shim up the legs that needed it. It seems to have worked and is stable but we'll see as I run different types of wood through the machine.

Nate, Hope you are subscribed! I know it is crazy, but I sold her. Absolutely nothing wrong with it, I just should have bought a 20" for what I want to do in the future. I fully recommend the AD-941 as a very quality combo J/P - possibly the best 16" J/P you can buy in NA (IMHO). There are a few more strong contenders in the 20" market. Felder AD-951 Format 4 Dual 51 SCMI FS 520 L'invincible FS 7 Martin TP300 (no longer made sadly and no one will sell one!) I have a long wait until the new machine arrives.

do you have to mess around with the jointer bed when you flip it back and forth between them? I have an old combo unit that ALWAYS threw itself out when I changed it around. Annoyed me so bad I got a separate jointer and left it as a thickness planer. Eventually wanna upgrade to a felder and wanna know if i can get away with going back to a single machine.

Had a few good points to think about. Looking at this machine or the Hammer A3 41 Love the price of the A3 41 (half the cost) but love the extra features and looks of the AD 941 The A3 41 is a single post while the AD 941 has 4 posts. Decisions, decisions.
@pkwoodworking
@pkwoodworking 10 месяцев назад
Price is a significant difference for sure. The beds are much longer on the AD-941 and the fit and finish is better. Fence is also much more robust. It all comes down to budget and space really.

@@pkwoodworking have been looking at the AD-941 and the A3-41 for a few years now every time we went to the Felder showroom in Toronto. Compared both machines side by side looking at points made from this vid. Getting the AD-941 delivered this week. The 4-post table support was the deciding factor. Looking forward for it.

@joschmoyo4532 Год назад
@@pkwoodworking You say that now, but you will find out in time. Once it starts going out of adjustment it is so badly designed that your going to be tearing your hair out trying to dial it back in again. That's when you will find out that getting the joiner sorted out will throw your thicknesser out. So you will re adjust the table lock and start messing with those infernal jack screws, only to realise that the main brackets are out as well. The trouble simply is this. There are way to many points of failure. To many adjustments. Makes it easy for the manufacturer but a nightmare for you. Ask Felder how long they warranty co planar. That will tell you EVERYTHING you need to know.

@@pkwoodworking Deep down you know I'm right and that's why so many guys trade in their budget hammer/ Felder for the bigger so called pro range ! It's the same bad engineering, just bigger with more Gizmo's. Felder has a very cynical devious marketing strategy and it works really well. So well that Festo copies it with their over priced garbage too. Lol.

Hello there. I'm writing from Colombia 🇨🇴. First of all great video. I'm really looking forward to get one of this, unfortunately it's impossible to buy it here, and also it's bee impossible to get in touch with Felder Group, I have sent lots of mails with no answers at all, and trying to call several times to the number pleased in the web site but same situation, no answer at all. I'm begging your help, would you be so kind to let me know where can I call, write to buy the Ad941? And of course if they could send it to Colombia? I really appreciate your help. Jointer planer combos seems like a risky investment. I like separate machines
@pkwoodworking

August, Not sure why you would call it a risky investment. They work well, and are significantly cheaper that buying two machines of the same size and quality. If space and budget were not an issue, agreed, I would also opt for separate machines. But in my case, space and budget are a consideration or I would have a Martin pair!

I think that machine is too big for a garage workshop and too expensive for someone who is not going to use it as a production machine. For this kind of money these machines are switched on in the morning and switched off when people go home. My workshop is only 500 sq.ft and I have ordered the A3 31 as I think that it big enough for my workshop. Still yours is a lovely machine and must be sweet to use.
@pkwoodworking
@pkwoodworking Год назад
WhiteVanMan (awesome name), I agree that no one "Has" to have these kind of machines to do great work. I would also say that you would be hard pressed to find a combo machine in any production shop. They are however a pleasure to use and the accuracy makes for quicker work for a one person show. Having said that, I now have other machines that should not really be in a home shop. Some people buy a Porsche and never go to a track with it, some people buy really expensive watches... This is my place to decompress and having an accurate and precision machine helps me do just that. Thanks for watchin and I hope to have a few more videos out soon.

@@pkwoodworking As long as you enjoy it that is what counts, I wish you much good times in your workshop. We are all guilty of buying tools we don't really need.
