MONSTER fossil crab prep - the 50lbs crab finally gets prepped... and it's a beast!

It's been almost two years since I found the 50lbs fossil crab concretion and I was starting to feel confident in my crab prepping skills, so I decided to make a start on the best fossil crab I have found so far.
It started off badly as I prepped the bottom of the crab first and had to start over again on the other side of the concretion. I was using a combination of an angle grinder and a chisel to remove the bulk of the rock but it was very slow going. Luckily, my large air scribe, the Motovator, arrived and made a HUGE difference. It removes about ten times as much rock as my other scribe does in the same time.
The species is a Tumidocarcinus giganteus from the mid-Miocene, around 12-million-years-ago.
People always ask what the value of this crab would be and the short answer is that the value is the labour you put in. Unprepped crabs aren't worth much - 95% of the value is in the hours you spend prepping it with specialised equipment.
I use a variety of air scribes on the fossil crab. The Motovator for rough work, a middle-of-the-range scribe for 60% of the work and a very fine one for cleaning up the joints and other delicate areas.
The prep took 208 hours and the processing of the 1200GB of 4K footage took another 20 hours and I still had to edit the video itself. All in, I think I have spent 250 hours on this project!

Wonderful video. THIS is what brings the past to life and connects us to it. As a child, I had a a common trilobite fossil in a chunk of matrix (rock). There was a somewhat obvious seam along the side, indicating that this rock could be easily split. With great patience and care, I did so, revealing another well preserved trilobite. Some of the matrix stuck to it, which I painstakingly removed with a large sewing needle and warm water. That feeling of revealing the full creature, that specific little fellow, unseen by any living eyes for over half a billion years... nothing compares to it. When you are the first being to see and contemplate another's remains across vast gaps of time, it feels like you are the last page of a very very large book.

@x3r9g6 3 года назад
I just found Mamlambo. How are these fossils made? Was the stone originally lava?
@justalittleoff-grid1180
@justalittleoff-grid1180 3 года назад
@@x3r9g6 so generally fossils occur through permineralization which means the cavity space left behind by the creature when it dies in place gets covered by "mud" and gets replaced by whatever host minerals are there at the time of lithification (conversion into rock). Now in this case because a crab thas an exoskeleton that is chitinous and typically composed of biopolymer and basically calcium, it undergoes a process called replacement where the host structure is replaced by the rock around the animal. So the shell usually doesn't decay and basically turns into what ever rock is there. There are other forms of fossilization but in general, all things fossilized are usually covered by mud, volcanic ash, or sand. Lava usually destroys any trace of an animal trapped in it. Hope that helps.
@phantomkid8952
@phantomkid8952 3 года назад
How do you recognize that a rock is a fossil?
@justalittleoff-grid1180
@justalittleoff-grid1180 3 года назад
@@phantomkid8952 that is where the hard part is. Even seasoned geologists and paleontologists can sometimes mistake abiotic formations for biological. Most of the time it comes down to a structure difference or obvious patterns - i.e. knowing the host rock characteristics compared to anomalistic traits like for instance an ammonite has "suture" structures in its chambered shell that is easily recognized from the rock itself. But that's where in depth study comes in -manganese dendrites for instance can look like fossilized ferns but they are in fact manganese oxide crystals that can form in cracks or layers between rocks. The other way we recognize fossils is studying how the rock was formed, like limestone that forms in ancient shallow seas and knowing that finding unusual patterns in outcrops of that limestone can often times lead to fossil discoveries due to the fact that life is quite prevalent in those types of environments. Basically the biological clues of today can lead to discoveries of the past.

All rocks have crabs in them , I didn't believe it at first till I took a rock out of the flower bed and slowly started chipping and grinding with a dremel. Sure enough there was a crab in it , I took a rock from my neighbors flower bed and found one in it too. I am working on a giant 12 ton boulder right now I had shipped in from Scotland. I can't wait to see if it's one huge crab or 600 small ones. I hope it's a giant one!!

WOW! I have a ton of questions, but first I must say I am really impressed with your skill and patience...wonderful job! 1. How did you know it was a crab fossil when you found it on the beach? Did you see a small amount poking through the rock? 2. How are you able to chip away the rock without damaging the fossil itself? 3. Would it be feasible to remove all of the rock so that you could study the features of the mouth and the like? 4. Do you sell these? Or are they for your personal collection? Thank you so much for sharing this..fantastic video.

@lonl123
@lonl123 Год назад
@@wendyhoag9637 After watching his vids for a while now I have answers for most of them: #1 A lot of times a tiny bit of claw or leg is poking out and he can identify them that way, but he also can tell by the shape of the concretion that it might have something inside. #2 He uses a small tool and as the fossil is a bit harder than the material around it, he can go really slow and the surrounding material can be chipped away. Watch one of his prep videos, they are fascinating and looks to be very laborious...however, the results are absolutely amazing....Oh and he also uses acid on the rock as well to prep it. #3 The more of the material you remove, the more fragile the actual fossil becomes and if you try and remove all of it, it runs the risk of breaking it. Still don't know about #4. If anyone in the comments would like to elucidate or correct me If I have something wrong, please let me know. :)

I wonder what the odds were that out of all the crabs there’s been, that one would make it to that size, stay intact at death, some how end up at that beach, and be found and prepped. I don’t know if there’s enough 0’s for that statistical odd.
