"so when you're wielding a hammer, you really don't see a monster jumping around in front of you. what you're supposed to see, is a head that's just moving all around. the body parts of the monster are just obstacles that can hit you or get in the way of your target" lmao
Your voiceover work has really come a long way. Getting comfortable doing narration has to be tough when it's not something you've done before. Excellent job.
I learned something VERY USEFUL in the village training for hammer. In the weapon controls section on page 2 of guild style, it says you gain Wind Resist while charging. It didn't say if it's Wind Res Hi or Lo and I haven't tested yet. Enjoy!
Still haven't tested. I got tired of using the hammer. EDIT: Thinking back, it has to be Wing Res Hi. Before I even found out about the Wind Res, I took on a high rank Kushala Daora and I didn't once get knocked over by it's dark wind barrier.
Wow, Typhoon Trigger's a lot weaker than I expected. Based on how long it takes to do the level 3 charge it for 80 motion + maybe 10-20 motion from the windup hits compared to the faster 42 + 20 + 90 or 15 + 20 + 90 for standard combo, the typhoon trigger really should be used for KO only, and even then it's a tricky art to aim well if you ask me.
IMO typhoon trigger my favorite hunter art of the hammer. As everyone knows: the last hit has extremely high KO damage and is the only reason I use the art. While I do agree with it being hard to aim a tip is to use the hunter art behind the monster and attack when the monster faces you. But really it's mostly used at a toppled monster
SilentDarkness Attack But aerial gets rid of my favourite basic move and when you've used switch axe since tri, it's infuriating. I did give aerial a go but it's not my cup of tea. (plus aerial pretty much NEEDS dash juice and demon riot to be that powerful otherwise it munches through stamina and your switch gauge instantly)
Nah mate, gunlance is the best weapon in the game. Insane reach? check Amazing Shield? check Explosions actually capable of breaking Mizutsune's claws? check Air explosions that can combo into badass ground slams? check Infinite combo possibilities? check Some of the best arts in the game? check Easy-to-manage heat gauge allowing for more blazing poke damage? check It can shotgun, it can swipe, it can stab, it can slam, it can combo all of these together, and it can break any part with ease. It even has it's own cooldown special move that no other weapon has. It had a hunter art, before hunter arts existed! Mobility problems? BAM, Blast Dash and Evade Extender save the day! with the former ALSO allowing for mounting damage, and a fullburst straight after. Heat Gauge giving you trouble? Wyvern's Breath to the rescue! Three minutes of maximum heat gauge! For three full minutes, deal maximum possible dps, with an added bonus of extra shelling damage, it works even if you overheat! And wyvern's blast has to be the single, best, attack in the game for knocking down a flying monster, not only does it have a very fast startup, but the first hit does huge burst damage, knocking almost any wyvern out of the sky, the other hits that follow are just the icing on the cake. The weapon even has three different types for three completely different playstyles, forget about phials and other minor alterations of playstyle, these three shot types affect shelling damage, range, heat gauge size, the rate of heat gain, the amount of shots, the damage bonuses for certain shots, and more. Seriously, this weapon is so diverse, it puts bowguns to shame.
dear god ,you mean to tell me after all this time i can go back to being a knock out king ,... thank you gaming gods you have blessed my hammer now just to pray alatreons hammer is back
Oh thank the gods for this. I'm awful at Monster Hunter, I fully admit, but I like to think I'm getting better, and, as a Hammer main, this certainly helps.
am i the only one who actually likes using guild style for almost every weapon, but especially here for the hammer? makes me feel like I'm back in the good ol' mh freedom.
When using adept, reaaallly aim for that 2nd level charge! I was playing the demo and wasn't really impressed with adept until i started landing those bad boys. Nargacuga got stunned rather frequently. 3 of those in a row is all it takes.
One thing to note, is that if you whiff with the Aerial Double Smash, you can't Dodge Cancel out of the recovery animation, so you'll be vulnerable for about 2 seconds after you land. Just discovered that in the training mission today.
going to be hard to say which style I'd use. I admit that I really do like the level 1 charge on the hammer since that is like a way to reposition yourself while staying on top of the monster. That said though, the adept's ability to charge up an even more powerful strike is way too appealing to me. Overall, I'm glad the the hammer is getting some love in MHX. Definitely will remain as my go to weapon when it comes to breaking off parts.
I think people might be underestimating striker hammer. I decimated the Great Maccau and Malfestio with it in the demo by mostly just spamming the super pound. No golf swing does hurt DPS when the monster is downed but the striker super pound does almost the same damage as the golf swing and almost always caused the monster to flinch if I could land a solid hit on their head. Its actually quite strong, and this is coming from someone who mained hammer for most of MH4U.
I'm still pretty early in the game, but this is my second favorite weapon. There's something oddly satisfying about smacking things around with an impossibly huge stone / metal club. And God, I hope Capcom will release XX for the Switch. The only thing I dislike about the game (aside from the seemingly plentiful, yet oddly unhelpful game mechanic explanations) is having to play it on such a small screen. On my plasma screen in 1080p, this would be close to the perfect ARPG. If they added the monster 'climbing' mechanics from Dragon's Dogma, it WOULD be the perfect ARPG. I'd seriously never have to buy one outside of this series.
How to wombo combo with the hammer in MHgen. 1. Pick aerial hammer. 2. Successfully mount the monster. 3. Pound its' face in with one homerun combo. 4. Chain a full charge to the face at the end of the combo. 5. Do another homerun combo to the face. 6. This downs the monster a second time. Repeat the same process you used for after the mount. 7. When you can't get any more hits in, throw a flash bomb, then run in a circle to unleash full charges at appropriate distance to hit the head. The monster will now be half dead, and well on its' way to another KO. 8. Fish for full charges to the head, aerial hop homerun setups, and ledge charges until mount is off CD. 9. Get a second mount as soon as possible, then repeat the entire process, including the flashbomb for free charge hits. The monster has now had its' shit kicked in, and the hunt should be over. The monster will at the very least be limping after all this. If you want to get really creative, try using speed setup to sprinkle traps in this rotation instead of the follow up charge hit after the first homerun. Also try using a status hammer for even more free damage opportunities. Such a simple weapon, right?
When this game will come out I'm gonna be all about Adept Hammer and smacking these monsters on their faces. After MH4U where the Hammer got kinda overshadowed by the CB finally it's coming back and I'm gonna main that big boy again, oh yes!
Hello, Gaijin. just wanted to ask something a little off topic, do you know of a way to chat while playing MH4U or MHX? I have been told people use skype, but I am wondering if there is a way to do it on the 3DS itself. Maybe there is an app that can run in the background while you play?
I know this is a random request, but please consider doing HBG next! I'm dying to see some more info / highlight reals after watching your video showcasing aerial style! It looks like a weapon I might really enjoy in MHGen.
Would have been nice if you had shown the KO and Exhaust Values on your Horn Tutorial aswell. Besides of that, nice work, i really enjoy your Monster Hunter Videos :)
I've been working on hammer in MH4U and I'm not quite sure on an armor set. I'm just super excited for Generations and the hammer seems so awesome in it. From the video, it seemed like Aerial and Guild were the best, but that Striker I think? Idk the last one lol it seemed like a lot of raw damage. As an insect glaive user, I really enjoy the mounts and then guild just seems great, but i will just have to try them all for myself this summer :D
Never touch the Hammer in Tri or 3U but I did pick it up in 4U and I quite enjoy it! I didn't think I'd be too interested in Aerial Style but the Lv 2 and Lv 3 dashing uppercut really sells it for me since I use that move all the time!
Now I feel weird for enjoying the hammer in a complete opposite way.. I use Aerial and jump all the time, trying to land my slams on the head / breakable areas until I KO it or mount it.. I'm still in LR killing enemies in around 9 minutes usually
Did the adept style for hammer got reworked? The running 2nd charge is completely different from the game. I cant pull off 3rd running and idle charge either. Do I need to have a hunter arts equipped in order to replicate what is shown in the adept style (I have absolute evasion atm)?
Will most of this knowledge carry over to Monster Hunter world? I'm a new player and I want to play hammer so I'm trying to do a little research on how hammer is typically played in MH games.
you forgot to mention that all styles except for guild will have the upward chuck after the first 3 spins will no longer link into your bread n' butter combo.
Hammer is gonna be a great weapon in this game. Adept supports the full ofensive - zero defensive style of hammer, and stun gives chances for you and your teammates to use slow but devastating hunting arts.
Hi I seem to be a little late to mhgen but you help a lot so thanks :) BTW do you know if this is nerfed\gone now? because I tried to use adapt with the hammer but my movesett is just the same as guild
I almost never go for the head unless my target is either panting or knocked down. Sure it might sound stupid since the whole point of using a hammer is to go for the KOs, but I find it way too dangerous and difficult to concentrate on the head at all times.
are there writin companions to your guides? i appreciate the time and effort you put into your videos, but it would be faster for me to read an article and spot highlights rather than watch an entire 10 min video.
havent played the monster hunter series in a whole but does the secret lvl 2 charge still exist? its where u can use the level 3 charge earlier than when u usually do
Never really dug the hammer in any of the MH games, but with the Generations demo I find myself using aerial and adept hammer quite a bit! Lots of fun!
Also, had NO idea that you could press A after an aerial vault to do the double smack! Oh Malfestio... If you thought I kicked your ass before, prepare to have a traumatic brain injury THIS time!
I've been playing MH for a while, but I never got really interested in the Hammer before 4U. Why? I thought it was too straightforward for my tastes. However, my group of friends didn't have any Hammer, Hunting Horn, or Greatsword users. (AKA, someone who'd be purely focusing on the head) By using my usual mains, which were the Lance and Dual Blades, I kept getting in their way. (One was using Switch-Axes, another the Insect Glaives, and the last Light Bowguns... either they constantly tripped or staggered me with the former, or I was the one annoying them with the latter) As I played using it with my friends, I ended up seeing how wrong I was, and then I started to have a lot of fun with it. With the agreement I made with them that every monster heads were mine, our teamwork improved significantly. Just felt like sharing this in case people still had doubts about the weapon. If trying it out alone didn't make it feel right for you, testing it again with a good team can make a huge difference.
Haha It was the same for me:D I always played with 2 friends (first timers, me being a veteran I guess:P). I played gs or hammer (for low and highrank at least) and they Glaive and dual blades. Using the hammer was really fun^^ after the KO my buddies always managed to get the tail
So I've heard that the resources used to build weapons is a bit different this time around. Would this happen to mean that Tail Cutting isn't as necessary? It's kind of annoying that I have to bring a whole different weapon to a fight than the one I like, simply because I need to cut a tail off. Alternatively, if tail cutting is still a thing, did they at least have the decency to prevent the need for Blunt or Shot weapons from needing unique tail carves? What about armor sets?
It's a month late, but there's 2 hits to the ability. One is when you're bringing the hammer up, and those are the first values, then when you slam it down, those are the second values. For clarity, that means the upward swing is 15/5/5 and the slam is 76/27/40
Gaijin: "With what we call the home run..." What's a home run? Oh wait... that. Gaijin! Don't confuse us with this new terminology, keep the lingo as has already been established. The rest of us know the 'home run' as the *golf swing*. Get a hole in one when you smack a Jaggi with it! Edit: Oh my word those pixels look horrific on a big screen... for the love of Ludroth #HDMonsterHunterForTheWest
I don't always go for the head as it can be really risky sometimes. I prioritize bodyshots (unless the monster is super predictable), and once I've worn down the monster I start going in for headshots much more often. My personal ranking for the styles would be 1. Guild (The R into XXA is great for body blows in addition to Superpounds) 2. Aerial (When you're actually hitting the monster anyway) 3. Bushido (Might be just me but it almost feels like I'm actually doing less KO to a monster using Bushido.) 4. Striker (Feels awful) Haven't touched Alchemy or Brave so can't comment on those (I'm playing XX on Switch)
Ok... so I found out that the "exhaust" state takes precedence over rage, making it SUPER useful... what does this mean for hammer? It means striker style with a focus and stamina drain skill set is ultra viable. This is just something ill experiment with once the game comes out.
I would say that for single player the basic attacks may get a bit repetitive, but with the 3 super skills probably not. At least in Multiplayer with other non-adept styles it could create huge opportunities for others. Monsters have to "take 5" just like players if their stamina goes into the "red" area so repeatedly shoving it down with say, hammer + SnS exaust oil Any style would be insanely strong with allowing others to get massive super skills in on the GS or CB or HH or anything. I personally am really gunna use Hammer Striker.
