I mean... did you ever really run out of whetstones though? I'm just happy they don't take up inventory but if we stil had to gather them it wouldn't be that bad, same with pick axes... also how the hell do you get throwing knives in this game??? Does anybody know? I'm taking my sweet time so I have yet to beat the game but like I feel like I should have access to them by now

You can also use quick reload after burst fire+wide sweep so "slam+burst fire+wide sweep+quick reload+slam" again and again without boucing of the monsters (even with no sharpness) since quick reload now reload whole clip instead of one pellet.

AzuliarTHP That sounds incredibly satisfying to pull off.

Also, you can quick reload after a shell, so if you are aimed at a armored part (like trying to break barroths head), you start that combo with a shell -> reload -> slam -> etc. That way your attacks are either shells or have innate minds eye.
@hitsugaya410

only problem tho is if u have red sharpness u cant fire ur shells so sharpness is very important since it goes down with every shot so since u cant decrease from red u can no longer shoot or do full burst

I got this game just yesterday, see I'm used to the rpg style of Dark Souls or Dragons Dogma. I have never played a Monster Hunter game before this one. The first time I open the equipment box and look at the weapons the first weapon that catches my eye is the gun lance. I equip it to check it out and the immediate reaction to seeing it on my back is "HOLY SHIT THIS THING IS HUGE". I go to the training room and I start using it, there is my second reaction "Its... a fucking.... REVOLVER ON A STICK..... HOLYSHIT"

Have you fought a Bazelgeuse with a gunlance, it's not that easy. Why I am telling you is because your name and pic bring nothing but flashes of explosions and constant and constant bomb pods.

@@jaredstuteville6499 I agree. I recently picked up the gunlance because it seemed interesting. It was easymode against anja, rathalos, rathian, kirin, Xeno... but that bazelgeuse, man. Its bombs drop all around you, so your shield becomes useless for a lot of its attacks. This doesn't sound that bad, but the quest against 2 bazelgeuses is fuckjng impossible with solo gunlance lmao! It's good that there is a weakness, as this weapon is pretty easy.

Thanks Rurikhan, I became an afficionado after I found the gunlance to be the only weapon working for me to finally beat Anjanath. The moveset felt somewhat limited but you've opened my eyes to possibilities I didn't know were possible, like the burst fire to wyrmstake combo. I also like how satisfying it feels when you can block a monster's attack intended for a teammate. Just as long as they recognize Wyvernblast charge and don't get their panties in a twist because the get caught in the blast, or glaive users incessantly stamina sapping while I'm guarding a fire breath.

Loved the gunlance guide. I am completely new to MH its been consuming my life for the pasr days (i literally went home early from a party yesterday just to play MHW). one of the most satisfying games ive played. I am a really bad MH player so this is really helpful, been playing mostly daggers (my main i think) and hammer, because they dont require that much to master. Been hunting on the 6* quests atm and decided it was time to pick up a new weapon (i have been trying out many different types of weapons but i cant seem to understand them) but this guide made me understand gunlance, definately gonna pick it up first thing tomorrow 😂 and btw can you do a slingshot guide too (yeah, i dont really know what its useful for never, used it effectively. Thx for the guide, take my subscribe 😂

quick tip about shelling the normal shells in a normal gunlance get increase damage when doing a full burst, the long gunlance gets a 20% damage increase when doing wyvern fire and its meant to do shell stab combos, and finally the wide gunlance gets about a 45 damage increase when shelling which makes it the strongest gunlance but there are 2 downfalls to the wide gl the shots hit in a spread (hence the name wide)which make it very easy to hit teammates and interrupt their damage and second u should never use full burst with the wide because it gets a negative 20% damage decrease when using full burst, side note charging wide shot shells adds about 10 to 20 boosted damage, and all shelling no matter what type or element will also do fire damage to the monsters
@alexcompositionflat
@alexcompositionflat 6 лет назад
I am pretty sure this is inaccurate now. Normal is still best for full burst. Long now has the best charged shots. Wide has the best Wyvern's fire.

Alex Parkes unless they have made changes to the damages which i havent seen and based off the damage numbers produced when u use the gl these numbers and modifiers are accurate there has been no news of damage changes to each of the 3 gunlance types other then the removal of the heat gauge system they put in generations but if news does surface about this ill gladly change it but as it stands this is the formula u should follow

Shot: [19/26/37] Charged shot: [37/54/76] Burst shot: [19/26/37]*(number of shells left/4 max) Wyvern Fire: [58/65/73]*3 Wide Lvl [1] (I only have 1 wide GL so far, unupgraded, taking the dust. Charged shelling spam: poke-hold shell- repeat till empty (note you have to keep pressing and holding not hold always), also if your sliding you can hold block to go into a sliding block, jump uppercut, slam ect i just found that out myself and i am grinning at how cool that was, you can literally slide into a monster, jump and do all kinds of things
@aaroncsoka7294
@aaroncsoka7294 6 лет назад
also you can increase your shelling power and wyvernfire cooldown equip Anjanath foot armor and Paolumu hand armor (both give you +1 on the "artillery" perk, which will increase your shelling damage by 10% and decreases wyvernfire cooldown by 15% (LV1), LV2 gives you 20% DMG and minus 30% cooldown and LV3 gives you 30% extra shelling damage and minus 50% cooldown on the wyvernfire ;-) You can get early to Artillery Lv2 with the both pieces of armor I mentioned, and then to LC3 if you craft the Artillery talisman ;-) ;-) ESSENTIAL for ALL Gunlance users that wanna stick with it throughout the game and engame ;-)

The wideslash attack is your most powerful attack that doesn't have a drastic drop on your sharpness bar. Triangle+Circle, Triangle, Triangle, X, Repeat is my go to combo when I'm trying to conserve sharpness or I'm saving the Wormstake for a specific area. It's also the combo I use on the Magmacores.
@kdudeiceblizzard565
@kdudeiceblizzard565 6 лет назад
A little advice I can give as someone who has enjoyed gunlance thoroughly throughout the series is to try to incorporate quick reloads into combo (it's done by pressing R2 quickly after a shot) by quickly refilling shots in a combo you're able to get shots in between normal attacks and still follow up with slam and wormstake and other moves, it's a great way to extend a combo while still being able to have the opportunity to do the higher damaging attacks.
@aduffyguy

Do not forget the importance of the Artillary Armor Skill! Artillary has 3 levels and each level increases the damage of your shells and decreses the cooldown time of your Wyvern's Fire. at level 3 the Cooldown is 50% of the normal cooldown. This means you get to do Wyvern's fire way more often. Another important Armor skill is Capacity Boost. The Capacity Boost Armor skill adds 1 extra ammo capacity to your gunlance shells(this also applies to the charge blade). An extra shell means less reloading with the wide ammo types and more burst damage with the normal type ammo slam burst. The long amo type doesn't get much of a boost from this other then less reloading per hunt.

In any menu for armor, you can sort for skills by pressing R3(the right joystick) and then selecting sort by skill. There are charms and decorations(late game things don't worry about decorations yet) that have the 2 skills I mentioned.
@joshuamattravers9490
@joshuamattravers9490 6 лет назад
I agree with the Artillery lvl.3 as it only costs one charm spot but Capacity boost is honestly not worth the armour slots over things like crit or extra sturdiness. Even then though Artillery lvl.3 is only really worth it if you intend to abuse the +30% shelling damage as the 50% WF cooldown means it'll be up faster then you should be using it. An example of a good weapon would be royal burst. This has 5 ammo capacity and lvl 4 shells making Artillery lvl.3 and burst fire rotations potent. If you're wasting skills on Capacity Boost then that's probably not a weapon you should be using Artillery lvl.3 on in the first place. And it's not like fitting quick reload into combos is difficult to do.

you forgot to mention the importance on the back steps and side steps for evasion and it can also be used for reloading. And also the importance of using a shell after an upper cut tho knock out flying enemy's and it can also be use to enter the slam. Also nifty tidbit. While the whetstone is unlimited, the whetfish scale is a consumable item that will recover more sharpness. Considering how fast that shelling, wyrmstake, and wyverns fire take out sharpness it might be a good idea to have a couple of these scales so you aren't spending 10% of the fight sharpening your gunlance.

So many people have commented so forgive me if i repeat what someone has wrote earlier: You can charge your shelling. After your first shelling or your first thrust, you can hold the circle button and your shelling will be charge for a few seconds and give off a more powerful shelling. I dont know how much more powerful it is.

one thing to note, when using wyverns fire on sleeping monsters, only the first hit of its 3 hits will do bonus damage, so something like a greatsword user is still better for the wakeup swing, but if your solo its not bad. but some gunlances do more damage with its charged shelling then you can follow up with wyverns fire. i noticed this on my Magdaros gunlance with long shelling lvl 4. its charged shelling seems to do the most damage when charged.

my guild card actually says "Gunlance is Love" (in generations it said Wife, but that wasn't available as a title) I'd also like to mention quick reloading, if you're shelling, quickly tapping guard and B/Circle will reload you to full, and its good for clutch stuff or wide GLs - just note, a quick reload does not reload your stake! also if you're levelling, prioritize Anja gear in LR, the legs have Artillery, which reduces the cooldown of Wyvern's fire and increases the damage of stakes and shells.

Great guide. Didn't know about the extended burst>stake with using triangle or even thought about trying circle after air jump thrust for air burst. Getting tired of using up thrust > shell for flying guys. Should make note in video that shell attack is based of where the end of the lance actually is. Animation does not reset or move the weapon. If your lance is pointed at a monster's toes... shell his toes and if there is a smaller monster and the lance is facing straight up and you shell... it will miss.

Very informative! Just to add: Normal shelling type has increased damage in the slam burst. Wide shelling type does more damage in firing single shots in between stabs. Long shelling type is like similar to wide shelling, but in between stabs you hold “circle” to charge the shelling and fire it, doing more damage. I run normal gunlance and on downed monsters you have enough time to do the slam burst into wyvernstake and can then follow up with wyvernfire. Or vice versa. On sleeping monsters, start with wyvernfire aiming down the body (head to tail because it pierces) and follow it up with a slam burst stake.

Don't sheathe your gl during a fight!! Unless the monster is running or stumbled and you find yourself a decent distance away do not sheathe that baby. The gun lance has one of the longest sheathing animations In the game, which means it'll take you more time to sheathe and run up to a monster than it would to dash toward it. Especially now that you can do a forward dash with your lance.
@KyouOneZilla
@KyouOneZilla 6 лет назад
Yup. Not to mention all monster eventually make their way back to you so there is not much reason to chase them at all. Just throw some torchpods on the ground then make yourself into a fortress behind them. Also, for most monsters its better to just guard and guardpoke when they enter their rage modes. You'll take almost no damage unless you expose your back or they have an attack that bypasses shields.
@silvisakeru
@silvisakeru 6 лет назад
ICEE1025 Rather than using the guarding poke which is abysmally weak, you're better off shelling and preferably sidestep into an offensive position.
@KyouOneZilla
@KyouOneZilla 6 лет назад
I sometimes do, Now that I have decent sharpness on my weapon. Shelling takes off like 3 or 4 times more sharpness than a simple poke and only does like 9 more damage to weakspots. I know we get unlimited whetstones but I still have a habit of preserving my sharpness for when I can go all out. And I only really use it when a monsters in enrage mode so sidestepping into an offensive position isn't as big of a focus to me as taking as little damage as possible. Unless you have an evade lancing setup I'd rather just block and get my consistent damage when I can.
@silvisakeru
@silvisakeru 6 лет назад
ICEE1025 While you do want to take less damage while a monster is in rage mode, you also want to be more aggressive during rage mode. Most monsters get increased attack and speed in rage mode, but gets decreased defense. Armor skills like Challenger+ increases hunter attack and affinity while monster is in rage mode. In most cases, exploiting the lower defense during rage mode is far more beneficial in the long run vs being defensive. Of course, shelling doesn't exactly benefit from this because it has fixed damage. However, the GL is a clumsy weapon so I do understand why that might not be as easy to do as a CB or a Lance.
@khed7104
@khed7104 6 лет назад
Also I just rewatched this and this is more directed at rurikahn than anything but you didn't mention quick reloading by pressing r2 and circle after any attack, and also dodge canceling out of animations in order to guard faster, plus the fact that you can dodge forward if you need to close a gap but don't want to leave yourself open to attacking and also using upward slash to shelling in order to replicate upward thrusting like you can with the lance and knocking monsters out of the sky, and also after upward thrust with shelling you can follow it up with more pokes and shelling, oh and also you can charge any shelling attack by holding circle... oh and like you guys mentioned guard poking and shelling... basically the gl is amazing and everyone needs to give it a shot ;) .... see what I did there? I said shot like as in you shoot with it... hahahahah... I'm hilarious

Just to add to this: after a shell hold down the shelling button to do a charged shot for more damage and range. Shelling after a high strike sends rounds in the air for tall monsters or flyers. You can also do a trick reload after a shell (forgot combo) that can be used as an infinite combo but will slowly push you back.

Hey man, I’m 100% new to the gun lance and came to your video for the guide and it was great! However I found out some things myself that you didn’t mention that are VERY helpful. One is that if you hold circle for the shelling you can actually barge your shelling for a little extra damage. And this next one is VERY helpful, as it always you to do a quick reload and keep going with your combo. All you need to do is after any combo attack, do the reload action and it will quick reload and then immediately you can continue comboing. One last thing I just found out while testing it more, is you can do an upwards shelling combo into a wyrmstake. Just do your rising slash, and start spamming shelling, and boom, hit any monster that is too high for you!

I appreciate that this guide wasn't spent whining about how you shouldn't use certain attacks because it's a 'DPS loss' or just flat out not explaining certain shelling types because of personal bias. You'd be surprised how many other videos are like that. People get way too focused on just beating things quickly instead of having fun.

Gunlance, hunting horn, bow and Longsword were added with release of NA version of MHF2. Unite was the G-rank expansion (G rank was always an expanse, Hr7-9, in the entire series actually) Note: NA version of MHF1 didn't have an expansion at it came already with G rank expansion. MHF2 was released to NA before G version came out but still had to wait a month or two before after Japan released Unite expansion before getting the Unite expansion as well. (pokke village G rank and full end game zones/monsters).

Quick reload is really important too. You reload your clip but not the stake, you can get it by chaining a reload after a shelling or thrust. Quick reload is really good on wide gunlances since you can spam shelling and quickload infinitely for a lot of damage. Doing the jump smash also acts as a quick reload. You also didn’t mention charge shelling which is like a small wyvern’s fire, it can be gotten by thrusting or shelling once then holding the shelling button. Otherwise great video, really helpful for people trying to learn what imo is a really underrated weapon

Shelling, and all other forms of explosions (including kinsect blast dust), deal true damage, which means that regardless of hit zone values or weak spots, etc., it will always do a set amount of damage, only affected by skills such as Artillery (Wyvernfire, Wyvern Ammo, Shelling, Element Discharge (Impact only), Maybe the explosive portion of Wyvernsnipe, Sticky Ammo), Heavy Artillery (Cannons), Bombardier (bombs), etc. Special Ammo types such as Wyvernblast are affected by a different skill called Special Ammo Boost. Cluster Ammo is not affected by Artillery.

For the Gunlance I Personally prefer the Long Shelling. Also for those who wanna try it, Upgrade the lance to a Shelling you like. Wide Shelling covers a croud in front of you. Long Shelling extends the range of Regular Shelling. Think of it as Extended Barrel in the COD series for the shotgun.

Awesome video i'm sure someone mentioned it but side dodge and back dodges can be used to get distance and quick reload can be used to reload if you want to keep extending your combos my favorite weapon since it was added to the game

I also noticed you didn't showcase attacks from behind blocking. There is one move I use a lot I've come to calling the "Schwarzenegger/Arnold/Terminator reload" where you block, poke upward with triangle and follow up with circle for a quick reload that flips the weapon like Arnold did in the Terminator 2 movie. spamming circle from behind block also gives infinite blasts upward which I use for tall monsters that are tired in case my wyrmstake is not available and I want quick part breaking damage in

If it's anything like previous MH games, shelling ignores armor (like all blast-type damage). So even though a gun(lance) that doesn't shoot very far seems weird in concept, think of it more as stuffing a localized explosion onto the target and setting it off at arm's length to try to work past their heavy armor.

You can also use the overhead slam directly after a quick reload. This is super handy if you need to get your burstfire off and your first upward thrust keeps getting deflected.

Gun lance shelling always does maximum damage to the monster no matter where you hit, hard part or soft part. So this weapon can dish out decent amount of damage when you are in a bad position.

Also pro tip from a gunlance main, whetfish scales are really good. Gunlances sharpness is super important because it is drained really fast if you play the lance well, and if your weapon bounces, you lose any combo ability. The scales basically make it easier to sharpen mid fight. Also if wyvern fire is charged use it before sharpening because it consumes a ton of sharpness

Very helpful video. Played mh3u for many hours but never touched gl, thought I'd give it a whirl for World. Enjoying the dps/tanky playstyle a lot but had no idea about combo strings using shelling. Thanks for this, now to practice.

Also any attacks that hit high like the forward+triangle, and triangle+circle allow you to shell upwards. If you shell upwards twice you can then wyrmstake upwards too

To follow up on wait balthy, Long gunlance gets a bonus to wyvern fire damage. On top of that each one of it's shells individually will deal more damage than normal, but less than wide. It's the in between of the 3 types, and my personal go to. Wide:charge shots Normal:full burst Long: extra wyvern fire dmg/range

IMPORTANT NOTE: it is possible to strafe guard. Hold guard button and "aim weapon while drawn" button and the hunter will always face his or her shield in the direction of the camera. This allows strafing in all directions while regaining stamina, hopping immediately left and right, and better aiming blocks and attacks including the wyvern fire. It is also possible to close the gap and go straight into shelling by canceling the running upwards lunge with either a charged or uncharged shell. Just some tips very few people talk about. Happy hunting!

shields do not block all damage its percentage based. GS and SNS have the lowest block CB is in the middle (unless your shield is charged then its a strong as lance and GL and it procs a mini elemental discharge equal to 1/2 a phial) and GL and Lance have the highest block. block is calculated by the shields block modifier and the weapons true damage which is calculated with there shown damage and there damage multiplier. you can also never take less then 1 damage (that might of been changed)
@kedolan4992
@kedolan4992 6 лет назад
Assuming it hasn't changed from past games, it's a little bit more complicated than that. Each type of weapon has a set block tier, and monster attacks also have a tier system. Lance/GL/CB (charged shield) usually block all damage from most "normal" attacks, and let a small amount through for the really heavy attacks. If you have the guard skill it would raise your block tier, such that you would be able to block attacks that used to hurt you, in addition to reducing the stamina cost of blocking and the stagger from the heavier attacks.

Did they combine Guard+ and Guard Up into one skill for World?
@kedolan4992
@kedolan4992 6 лет назад
I'm still in mid low rank, but I don't think so? I've only seen one piece of armor so far with guard on it, but it didn't mention anything along the lines of making unblockable attacks blockable, which is what guard+ did (it mostly just makes the big unblockable beam attacks blockable).
@MansMan42069
@MansMan42069 6 лет назад
Shields have a tier/block strength. If an attack is sufficiently powerful, it'll blow through a weak guard. Invest in Guard skill to raise its strength. There are some attacks that are unblockable, no matter your block strength. Use Guard Up to allow you to block them. However, you're still subject to that attack's strength. Even if you have Guard Up, it can still blow through your guard if it's strong enough.

Great video! And this weapon is what happen when a lance have a baby with a heavy bowgun, but I was really hoping capcom let gunlance use wyvern ammo for wyvern fire instead of waiting on cool down.
@GenoBlast1717
@GenoBlast1717 6 лет назад
Wyrmstake cannon is super fun and does a lot of damage, but with a normal and long gunlance I'm pretty sure it's better to just do rising slash> slam>burst fire>wide sweep>quick reload> rising slash> slam> burst fire>wide sweep>quick reload.... and just repeat. Also, there is a way to charge your shelling shots by holding B after a lateral thrust which does more damage, and you can aim up or down with it but it's kind of hard to use as you can't aim left or right during the charge.
@drecknathmagladery9118
@drecknathmagladery9118 6 лет назад
another thing that I still remember is that gunlances farther down the upgrade line will more often than not have a shorter cool down on wyvern fire
@an_ordinary_goose
@an_ordinary_goose 6 лет назад
It should also be noted that while individual shell damage is quite small, the damage from shelling is *fixed, regardless of where it hits the monster*, which means it is ideal against monsters who have naturally dense parts.

Should I focus on highest base damage or go for elements? Shelling doesn't benefit from elements or status, but you can consistently hit with the lance. Also, I know there ain't many substantially stronger gunlances (since the 2 most powerful only differ in element, afinity and 1 level in shelling ).

watched this one and the advanced one and was wondering why you did not mention the hold R2, press triangle, press O repeatedly combo? is it just not practical? because it automatically reloads your gun after ever shell so you can theoretically continue to fire shells till you get hit or stop
