Right now its bow, but I have played a lot of charge blade, dual blade, and long sword. I don't have World yet, unfortunately... no PS4 so I have to wait until the PC release.
World is a pretty interesting beast, innit? I'm a GunLance main but holy shit I'm excited for a bunch of other weapons now (not to say I'm not excited for the new Wyrm Stake mechanic though).
Hammer is in my opinion the perfect melee weapon for players new to the Monster Hunter series. Its pretty simple to understand the moveset, yet the fact that you should always try to cause severe braindamage to the Monsters teaches so much about positioning and boss mechanics which makes one a better player overall. Also it's so damn rewarding to KO a Monster after a massive blow to the head.
QUICK TIP: when you charge the hammer and don’t want to lose the charge but the monster is moving around a bit *chasing your teammates* turning off auto sheath in the menu will ensure your hunter doesn’t put away the weapon and lose your charge. So many times my hunter had sheathed the hammer when I was moving around charged and I lost my charge. New player here to MH so thought I’d help out maybe another new player. Cheers!
i don't like the hammer much because i'm a parry kind of guy, but god damn if that spinning attack isn't amazing, especially the sound effect when you smash like 3 or 4 times something on the head as you fall.
True. Plus that is when you run para hammer for ULTIMATE CC! Also sometimes stamina thief for non elder dragons, you may not kill them, but you will bully them while you're team kills them.
Hammer is my Jam. I love this weapon. The Hammer is probably the most satisifying weapon in the game. Its so weighty and you really feel connected when it slams into a face.
There’s another bit of hidden ledge tech with the hammer. If you either dodge off a ledge with X or sprint off with the weapon sheathed and then press R2 in midair, you can input in any direction to instantly change your trajectory.
Great video as always. Just wanted to add, I love the spinning attack for smaller monster mobs. Let's say you are chasing a monster and run in to a pack of small monsters, just group them up and use that spinning attack and it's over. One attack and you're good, it's a nice time saver.
Just a little tip for the Big Bang combo- if you start the combo off-centered from where your intended target is you can slightly course-correct your swings during each hit by holding the analog stick left or right so you can get your finisher exactly where you want it. Hope this helps!
The opening music and the highlights in the beginning of all of these tutorials makes them so epic to watch. It doesnt hurt that all of them are useful.
One combo I think is very important is: Hold R2 until charges 3 times and after execute it press L2 right after. It will grab a monster part and you can hit with triangle.
Quick tip cause I don’t remember if he covers this, but while you’re charging the hammer, if you fully charge it and stand still you can do the Charged Big Bang, which can be followed with a clutch claw shot that deals good damage and reels you onto the monster. As you pull yourself in, you do that spinning move with the hammer like when you are sliding down a hill. All this combos into a real nice attack, with the added benefit of softening up a part of the monster.
"If you have a hammer user, they're far more valuable at the head." Holy shit-- someone gets it! Unfortunately, this likely won't change the fact that I still get stunlocked by my own team while the monster is down... :P
iMMACULATiON then you need to position and/or reposition yourself better if someone starts hitting you.. I play with random pugs nonstop and main hammer. Rarely have a issue and while it is annoying if your positioned first but sometimes you have to account for idiots even when you shouldn’t have too lol
You probably didn't know this, but if you jump off a ledge, you can do a charge attack after you jump and send yourself in the direction you're aiming for. Helpful for mounting.
i personally find it easier to understand the weapon tutorial of arrekz and the editing that comes with it is a plus for me... every weapon he covers makes me want to switch my main weapon. currently using hammer now.
One of the main dps/stun dealers is the 3rd charged attack. In solo with the diablos shatterer if you land the first three hits with that it’s usually always a stun knockdown. Great tips and showcase of the hammer skills. I’m not sure if everyone knows but if you charge the hammer and walk toward certain areas such as the arenas dead tree roots you can run up those and do your spinning hammer move to mount monsters. Like so everyone can see.
Brandon Alvarez lol should be getting interesting soon enough. Glad to see zegodhand into an MH game. I've been a hammer main since the first game. In World, I have yet to try another weapon even!
I certainly didn't expect to see you here. I suppose that Berserk fans are naturally attracted to other masterpieces as well. I hope we get a Guts DLC for MHW, because the GS weapon is perfect for the Dragonslayer!
I had a funny feeling the Hammer would be next! Been finally branching out now I've reached Tempered Hunts, and I decided to learn Hammer and Charge Blade next. Your CB workshop was incredibly helpful, so very happy to see this. Thanks, Arekkz!
You could say the same about weapons tutorials, or which quests unlock your mantles and boosters. It wont hurt to have these videos on arekkz channel^^
Git Gud but you have monster notes for that :p I just find out what element / ailment they don't like and use that. Kinda cut and dry really, but in my experience elements aren't as noticeable as ailments. Getting a monster poisoned, paralyzed, or even put to sleep so you have a heavy hitter + bombs wake them is really nice.
There's also a move you can use with hammers (although I don't know if it works with other weapons) that, when you're charging the hammer, you dodge towards a ledge and jump off, then swing in midair while holding the thumbstick back towards the ledge, you'll change direction and swing your attack back onto the ledge. This works for mounting too 👍
Important thing to mention on charging your hammer midair; when you press R2 midair to charge you do a little midair hop. This can be used to get extra distance out of your jump, but you can also completely change the direction you're going at this point, allowing you one chance to adjust your positioning for the charged hit. Additionally- since you can change your direction freely with this hop and you also gain just a tiny bit of altitude, you can jump off a ledge, do a complete 180, and gain enough height to do some mounting damage to a monster on the same level you just jumped from.
Ah yes, I was on the desert map and on the stone bridge near the sand pit and I tried to jump down 3 times with my hammer, but because the monster was close to the canyon wall, I tried to change my direction towards it, but the small hop forced me to return to the ledge I started from. lol.
If you dont have a charge active, the second level of charge attack covers significantly more ground and is great a closing gaps and following into combos and charges as well
These are really awesome videos! Thank you for making them. In the future I think it would be amazing if you put time stamps in the description for when you show a combo. As the video goes on, I think it's easy to forget what exactly is the "Golf Swing Combo" and it would be really helpful to be able to find exactly when that's mentioned without having to seek through a lot of footage of other combos.
these tutorials are so good it really helps me to teach my new friend to get the hang of the weapon they chose to and have even helped me a lot on some combos/knowledge i even didnt know
Vesperian if i may, the raw attack boost builds is always a nice go to. Going 4 piece diablos is nice that has slugger, crit draw, and the set bonuses. If youd like some fun try the airborn and slider decorations, your aerial spin is gona be deadly and satisfying.
At the current moment I'm using a mix of Bazel Helm + Coil (Earplugs) + Dobber Mail and Greaves + Nergigante Vambraces. All with a Diablos Shatterer II. Screencap of Skills imgur.com/a/pmFKt Good idea with the ariborn decoration, got one but never thought on using it with the killing hammer aerial spin of death.
Here's a goofy slide attack build with a lot of space for customization if you just want to be Sonic the Hedgehog and spindash through the air all day: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-nAXcqcwBe_Q.html
As a hammer main since 2g, I really appreciate you can do this tutorial. This tutorial has pretty much covered everything, but there is one more thing that is worth to be noticed. After you finished your big bang combo/triangle spam combo, if you still have time to hit the monster, instead of waiting for the recovery, you can follow up with r2. By doing this you may squeeze an attack or two in your overall combo. I’m so glad that you mention letting hammer/hh hitting the head. It’s almost unplayable for me to play hammer online since I’ll get stunlocked by teammates most of the time, which is really depressing. Thanks again and good job, keep up the great work!
I've been using the insect glaive up until the anjanath, and just built my first hammer. I'm now a proud Member of the church of B O N K and I dont know why I would use another weapon ever
I've been looking forward to this video since the tutorials came out. However, I would of like to see more on his build and a breakdown of what hammers are considered higher tier since element damage isn't very strong for a hammer user. Anyways much love! Thanks Arkezz
I noticed you didn't mention ledge jumping. Situational, but it can be a good source of damage when the stars align. When you jump off of a ledge, you can press your charge button to do a pretty strong attack that also gives you extra air height. Also a great way to mount monsters.
A tip about the Big Bang combo: you can ever so slightly turn and re-position yourself mid combo to account for a monster moving out of the way of your hits (like how Great Sword can re-position mid charge, but not as drastic)
Gosh I thought I would have a breeze picking up the hammer again in this game but they added a lot of new mechanics I wasn't even aware about. Thanks for the video!
Perhaps I’m just a bad student, but for me it would be easier if you said the “tripple triangle combo” rather than the “gulf swing combo”. Its probably just a learning style, but since i am watching this before ever even using the weapon, me visualizing myself hitting triangle 3 times is much easier than remembering that the gulf swing combo. This paired with all of the other combos that are completely foreign names to me would make it much easier to repetitive hear the button presses rather than the combo names. It just requires a few rewatches is all. Love your guides, and thanks for the high quality content! They have helped much in my monster hunter journey this far, and i refer to them whenever picking up a new weapon :)
Started playing MH 3 weeks ago and I love the hammer, the aerial moves in particular, I've begun to master ledge hopping with R2 and I pity any monster that moves to close to a ledge. The fact that you can reorient yourself both when you start holding R2 and then when you release it means you can hop back to the ledge and still hit in any direction. It's really awesome when you start to chain mount - knock down - stun - mount, knock down, etc.
If you press R2 while jumping off a ledge you can effectively have a second jump that lets you reposition yourself to hit the monster better or if you are quick enough you can jump back on to the ledge.
Awesome video than you! I recently just started playing Monster Hunter World and am absolutely loving it and I've been using the hammer but I didn't fully understand all of its mechanics. This video was extremely informative and will significantly help me in taking down larger monsters, thanks!
I started Monster Hunting with World, and immediately knew I loved the hammer. All I needed to know was from this vid. Thank you so much for dozens of concussed wyverns. :)
Agreed about the tootorial 😉 But on a serious note.....a horn tutorial would be nice, because lets be real we "dooters" are a rare breed of hunters... with my 134hr game time i have not met a single horn user, also guides is limited for us.... Everytime im in a group i always see a greatsword, longsword, switchblade, switch axe, bows, gunners Never seen another horn user 😭
Just met my very first Horn user last night in a Nergigante hunt. Had no idea what was going on with my status messages, but the hunt was over before I realised what was happening. Such a cool party member to have.
Miyu Shun hahaha if you talk to the first wyverian he says longsword is the most common and hunting horn is the least. I use kinisect glaive I guess we're 8th most common
there are also a couple of special upswing triangle hits that can be used after doing an aerial attack, i think they are called charged upswing II and charged spinning upswing. if the monster is still above you when you land, these do great damage
i am new to the series and well i am not new to fighting style games so learning the weapons hasn't been the hardest thing to do by myself but i just couldn't figure out the hammer combos because well theyre long and simple XD ty very much for this one man much love from Australia
Is it just me, or does the Hammer remind anyone of Kirby's Super Star Hammer Ability? At any rate, when you use Hammer, everything around you becomes a stake, ready for pounding.
Every weapon in Monster Hunter looks so fun!!! I have used long sword at the start and switched to charge blade later on and am still using it now thanks to your tutorial! I just wanna use every weapon in the game!
I just re-installed MHWI, the new hype around the game made me wanna play again, started a fresh save with hammer - forgot how good this game is, and how fantastic these tutorials are, ty sir
This is the video that made me go back to mhw for a second chance with hammer as main. So glad I did. I’m hundreds of hours deep now. Stacking weakness exploit, attack boost skills, wounding with the clutch and just wailing on the head. What a game.
I hated this weapon when i first started the game. After 250 hours I created a second account and used hammer the whole time. I absolutely adore it now. Its so satisfying to crush and smash monsters heads! Or interupting the monster in the middle of a big attack! Numerous times ive stunned diablos out of a charge and its so satisfying!
My brother picked the hammer on his first foray into Monster Hunter (to resounding approval). Our first hunt together began with him charging up while walking up behind the Kulu-Ya-Ku, only to have him leap off the edge in that beautiful spin attack, which was accompanied by a yelp of surprise. He had absolutely no idea what happened and my buddy and I were too busy laughing our asses off to explain.
Just built my first hammer.. The fatalis one. Slapped on some gems and did my first attempt against lunastra. Had zero faints and couldn't stop laughing. This weapon is awesome! I just kept yelling "bonk" with every hit. It's so satisfying
THANK YOU for what you said at the end. HH and Hammer belong at the head; they are most effective there than anywhere else. EVEN IF the tail is not cuttable, a bladed weapon still usually does more damage elsewhere. If you try to go for the head while a Hammer or HH user is, you could get them killed (looking at you LS user during Vaal Hazak).
