This is the Great Wall of Phoibos. Their most ambitious watch to date, and a real lume monster. It's their first 500m diver, first with a Swiss movement, and their most original design to date.
Utilizing and ETA 2824-2 and coming in at 42mm, this is one to see. With a brilliant, yet funky design inspired by its namesake.
The Great Wall. There are four versions and this orange and grey one is the PY022D.

The more watch reviews I watch among the various channels, the more I appreciate your very high production value. Thanks very much for a great review. You do a very thorough job, including all the details anyone could want, insightful opinions and superb camera work and editing, all while keeping in mind an optimum length. It's a wonder to me that you don't have 1M+ subscribers!

As always, great review. This is one of those watches with quite a bit of design choices that are different... and they all happen to work for me. I can totally see where it wouldn't be for all tastes, though. I happen to love the brick wall design and the shield markers on the dial. Also, the lug shape appeals to me and they look like they fit great on your wrist. Part of the reason I like looking around the web at watches is that I don't want a watch that looks like I could pick it up at the local mall, and this definitely meets that criteria. My main issue here is size. I have smaller 6.5 inch wrists and am trying hard to get smaller watches now. This looks like a well designed, comfortable 42mm watch, but I'm really wanting 40mm or below right now.
@RelativeTime

Still not sure about the theme, but seeing the video review I really love dial, indices, case, they really did a great job on it. And I was really surprised at the dimensions, judging from the pictures and the fact that it was 500M I assumed it would be much larger, but it looks like it wears great. Enjoyed the review, as usual!

They did a really good job on this one. Price is pretty good considering it’s an ETA, I’m curious to see how well it sells. Although I’m also curious if they raise the price. Got an email from VAER (they sent it to everyone who was interested in their new Auto). They mentioned that the cost of the ETA movement they wanted to use has risen 40% from their last email update. Thus having to raise the price a little. Evidently prices on ETA is very volatile.

I am with you on this....I fail to see the connection too. The quality looks to be there for the price; however, the theme (or lack thereof) is confusing. I hope Phoibos posts something to explain their choice. Based on specs alone, I am considering this watch for myself.

The Phoibos design team had done an excellent job in combining historical elements as well as the physical characteristics of the Great Wall into the design of this watch. Thy indices on the dial were represented by shields and spear tips which were standard weapons of Chinese soldiers guarding the kingdom against potential invaders. The sword-styled hour and minute hands further enhance the historical theme. I really like the physical elements of the Great Wall being expressed on the brick design of the dial and the diver's timing bezel which represents the ridges of the Great Wall. Part of the Great Wall is as old as 2500 years! This watch is not for everyone but the funky design together with the historical elements associated with the Great Wall got me convinced to get one in the not-too-distant future.

I do get a seiko monster vibe from this one but it's from the older monster style 🤔 maybe is the bezel's edge that's very similar and the markers with their very aggressive sword/spearhead likeness to the older fanged seiko monsters. The crown guards just make think in the oris aquis and the old James Bond Omega seamaster. Nice video 👍

Hi Shane, another well-done review. I realize most people will want an ETA 2824-2 movement because they believe (falsely from my personal experience) that it is a "better" movement. The ETA 2824-2 is a reliable movement for the most part. Just do not hand wind them, unless you don't mind servicing them often. The grade of lume sounds, and looks to be very effective. As Just the Watch pointed out I don't get the connection. A wall and an octopus.....sounds like the start of a bad joke. Anyways, I like the size and might end up picking this one up just to do it. Thanks again for the first rate vid. Best wishes.
@RelativeTime
@RelativeTime 5 лет назад
Very true about the ETA. It's more desirable, more expensive, but doesn't mean it's better than others. I've also heard that prices can be very volatile. Vaer sent out an email to those that were interested in their automatic a few days ago. Mentioned that from the last communication prices of the ETA movement they were wanting to use shot up 40%. Sometimes I wonder if it's just Swatch Group playing games to mess with the rest of the industry.
@patricko9170
@patricko9170 5 лет назад
@@RelativeTime Hi Shane, speaking from a historical point of view it could be argued that the Swatch Group is a monopoly. Other companies are now (as you are probably aware) copying their movements since the patents have expired. They are not exact copies/clones, as several other brands have made alterations in materials and have flipped around bridges in several movements (here's looking at you Sellita). Only time will tell if these copycatted movements will be reliable. I am all for a watch manufacturer developing their own movements. This failed miserably with Breitling and a few other luxury brands in the recent past, fortunately they are improving as time progresses. They took steps to develop their own movements as a reaction to what Swatch was doing in the 90s. Yes, this takes a lot of research, testing, and money. However, if you are like me I am sick to death of the common ETA, Miyota, and Seiko movements as just about every watch will be using them in the sub $1,000 market. Most of these have remained unchanged for over a decade, and some since the 1950s. Yes they are reliable, but where is the innovation? This is not 1950 or 1960, it would be nice to see a new movement in affordable watches that has enhanced shock protection, longer power reserves, or anti-magnetism protection (higher than the laughable 4,800 A/m). If I see another Micro-brand use the Seiko NH35 movement I will probably be sick. Orient (EPSON) seems to be on the right track with their F6922 and 40N5A type movements with small innovations in an affordable watch. In closing, I do hope that the Swatch Group's hold upon the watch industry will turn the tide and that we will see some new movements surface in the affordable watch market.

I wish Phoibos would release this watch with a different dial. Maybe carbon fiber or something more traditional. I've been a super fan of Phoibos since the beginning (I actually named the Eagle Ray). Months ago, Emily answered my email that the Great Wall was to celebrate the success of the Phoibos models so far, as well as the company's pride in the Chinese manufacturing. The real wall is a symbol of pride to the Chinese people. I love this watch from a "spec" aspect, as well as everything except the dial. I am not a movement snob, so I am really unimpressed that they chose the ETA. I understand why they did it and agree with the tactic. As for which watch is Phoibos best real "Diver", there is no question that the Ocean Master 1000M Automatic PY005 wears the crown. I own a Blue faced version of the Ocean Master, and it is beautiful as well as tough as nails. It really competes well with my Victorinox Swiss Army I.N.O.X. Professional Diver which is among the most durable watches ever produced. I wear both without worry of marks or damage. For the Ocean Master that is quite an accomplishment. As for wrist appeal; the Eagle Ray is my most beautiful watch. It is very unique and you can't go wrong with any color choice. I am so proud of Ethan and Emily as well as the whole team at Phoibos. I am also very excited to be part of the Phoibos Watch Owners Club on Facebook.

Beautiful watch and design, is it a certified divers? Also ETA movement is a plus, with a bezel that hits the mark! Your point is well taken to reference Seiko.... lacking a better bezel on some models, I own a turtle that's not a JDM model, and the bezel falls a little short from the mark @ 12??? I wonder if the JDM models have these problems also Nice job my friend! It kinda of has a monster vibe, after all it has a Kraken on the dial! Lol

Thanks. I don't think it's iso certified. Otherwise I think it would say Divers 500m. Although at 500m should be good for almost anyone to dive with. I think the world record for a dive is just over 300m, so plenty of room to spare.

It might be. I noticed it when editing, but it’s really hard to say if it is. Camera might be shifted just slightly, or some distortion from the angle of the crystal. Great review and footage, as usual! I don't think the design is for me though. I came close to ordering the Wavemaster this weekend as my first diver (I always say I don't like divers but I never actually tried one so I figured I should at least try one once, and the rotating bezel does look really useful) but the backplay on the bezel you showed us made me think again, plus I kinda preferred its look with the smaller round indices on the first gen Wavemaster. I'm still considering the all black with blue accents Reefmaster if it comes back in to stock again but idk, even though it looks like it was made for me I kinda wanted something else then black for a change. First world problems, lol. Have you seen the Traska Freediver by the way? I really like the mint version with the black bezel, but as usual the watch was out of stock by the time I discovered it :P

The wavemaster looks very cool, but haven't seen one in person. I'm a sucker for a sandwich dial. I have seen the Traska Freediver. Love that mint dial. Speculation about the name; the owners are from China. Even if the watch is made in Hong Kong perhaps naming it "Great Wall" is an homage to their roots. Have they ever been interviewed? Or at least asked about it? I like the look, with the Monster-esqe fat indices and the bezel reminds of Promasters.
@RelativeTime

I think someone mentioned that they just said they wanted to do something to honor their heritage. So the Great Wall is one of the most well known things across the globe, and not a common theme for a watch.

Phoibus really aren't making watches for me, but the consistency, thoroughness and originality of their designs have always impressed. In my opinion this one is consistently and thoroughly hideous, in an original sort of way. Which is fine. It's definitely less of an eyesore on the rubber strap, and would go well with a wetsuit and flippers - anything else and you're going to look like you're packing way too much watch. Probably one of the best deals at the price point given the movement, if you buy into the ETA hype.

I like everything about this watch except the dial. Perhaps a field watch called the Great Wall would have been more appropriate. I do like the funky colors. The blue and orange design is slightly reminiscent of the Miami Dolphins. Frankly, I prefer a sunburst dial and that is why I will sadly pass on this model.

Meh, I particularly dislike the weird "shield" like 9, 12 and 3 hour indicators. If they were half the size I would have liked the design but now it's the detail that really turns me off. I'm actually contemplating buying the Sentinel which I like better. The hi-beat miyota is a plus to me also. Btw, the Phoibos logo always makes me want to say "Hail Hydra!" 😜

The Miyota 9015 is a great movement. I think it's thinner and cheaper, and a great price for what they are selling them at. When i took it off the Logo was imprinted in my arm for a bit.

Most Phoibos models are out of stock all the time. That's frustrating. What's the point in selling watches when they can't stock nor make enough for a couple of years?
@RelativeTime
@RelativeTime 5 лет назад
I think a lot of the ones that are out of stock are the Seiko NH35 models. When I last talked to Helm they mentioned that one of the reasons they are always out of stock was a huge demand for the movement. Which was resulting in a 6 mo lead time from when they ordered new watches from their manufacturer.

Many reviewers are catching on to Phoibos now but I feel that the Eagle Ray, was completely over-looked. And that’s easily their best designed watch. (Obviously that’s just my opinion.) But I really wish more reviewers had paid more attention to that particular watch. While the Great Wall Watch is attractive, I can’t help but feel it looks a little too much like a toy watch or kid’s watch.

Great review. This watch looks much better on person then in the renderings. I saw a review of the blue/orange as well and that also looked nice. I actually got the black/Blue, which I am still glad a choose over the other options, but all the colors look much better then I thought they would. I actually broke one of the screws while sizing it, snapped beacause I overtightened it. As Shane suggested, once it’s snug, stop. In regards to the Seiko Monster, the 3rd Gen with the 6r15 is at least $600 and the Gen 4 which just came out got a movement downgrade to the 4r36. The 4th Gen I seen for $540 from Gnoman. The Great Wall is a better deal, the Monster does not have sapphire. There are not to many 2824 powered watches around $500. The main ones are the Steinhart Ocean 1 and the Glycine Combat Sub 42. I have seen both for under $500. However, the Steinhart is basically a Submariner Homage. The Combat Sub is very traditional with its aluminum Bezel and much weaker C1 lume. The Great Wall gives you something pretty unique for a reasonable price.
@RelativeTime
@RelativeTime 5 лет назад
One of the reasons they changed the screws in the Wave Master was that some people were braking them from over tightening. So that was on my mind when I was saw these. One watch I saw that comes close to this price is Zelos Mako 500m diver. I think it’s around $550, but it uses a Selitta not an ETA. Functionally the same (I believe), but costs less.
@surfitli
@surfitli 5 лет назад
Relative Time Mako is really nice. I actually have the Version 1 Steel. It’s a little smaller at 40mm. It’s also seems thinner, about as then as a 500m watch gets. I they were $550 on rubber with leather in the package. Zelos has more experience with the mid range, and the Mako is simiiar to this is some ways, in others it’s very different. ETA vs Selitta would make for an interesting video. Selitta will sell to anyone who is interested while the Swatch Group wants to limit and have total control over who they sell there movements to. I’m most interested to see how The Selittas, which are very similar to ETA movements, are in the long run, how reliable they are on the first five years.
@RelativeTime
@RelativeTime 5 лет назад
If I remember right, Selitta used to be subcontracted to ETA to make movements or maybe components for the Eta movements. So they already had the experience with it. Would be interesting to have a detailed comparison. I was in contact with Zelos to see if they would lend me a watch to review. Had a good conversation with the owner, but haven't heard anything for a while.
@surfitli
@surfitli 5 лет назад
Relative Time Selitta was basically a subcontractor for ETA. At some point ETA stopped producing partial movements. Selitta then decided to make there own movements. They eventually found out that The ETA patients expired and they basically made a clone movement, the SW-200. Only real difference is the Jewel count. They have recently came out with other Clone movments.
