I am always impressed by your attention to detail with your engineering Mike. There is no “cutting corners” or “close enough is good enough” approach with your aircraft builds. The most recent example where you took the time to manufacture the throttle and mixture control bell crank levers with ball bearings instead of plain bushings is just another example of going that extra yard and is fantastic.
As a fellow designer, engineer, and machinist.....I love the VO on the intro "Machine it, draft it......" I tend to start in the shop as well - fiddling with ideas and concepts to see what is possible. Then I draft the part or assembly afterward armed with practical knowledge. Really love how you approach these challenges Mike! Really inspiring.
I, also, am a Mechanical Engineer (MET)! And I do design work (sometimes I just build it) and I know my way around a Machine Shop! My first thought when I saw the Intro was "This thing has an INSANE power/weight ratio!"
Not fair you fire Scrappy up, we watch as you Leap Forward, tell us that Scrappy's is all warmed up, then cut to Scrappy sitting idle with loud engine sounds in the background No Doubt not showing us that Scrappy was indeed dragging the pick up along the ramp.
As a short teaser this was well enough at the end of the dae after a long wait 🤠 Also looking forward hearing the beautiful roar of this flat-8 780ci banger 😀😀😀
I´ll bet Scrappy can jump up with the front gear up, even without the engine running, i´m pretty sure mike build kinda a lowrider/jumping car setup with these KingShocks, using the pressure of the Oxygen bottle.. Why? Stol Drags.. start with the shocks at no pressure, and a low height, avoiding drag from the Wings to get to Takeoff Speed even fastere, and as he hits the JUMP Scrappy JUMP button, the Shocks and the massive travel they have will catapult Scrappys front up to get an massive Angle of attack.. and let the 780cui engine deal with the drag.. which it will be easy capable of pulling kinda 90° verical up This thing is a SToL Top Fuel Dragster while Draco was(and will be again) kinda an STOL SUV with lots of Power
This is only equal length NOT tuned length. Tuning is FAR more involved and if you want to read up on it have a look at the Race Engine Spec Form on BUNS Stainless website and some of their articles on the subject.
AWESOME!!!! Mike's BACK. THE man with the GREATEST 8 year old kid on Christmas morning grin and level of excitement. Yo!! Mike thanks for taking time to explain what your doing and why, i have learned so much (already knew a bit) about aeronautical engineering from your patient explanations. Top tier RU-vid, exactly what the platform SHOULD be about. Thanks m8
Such a tease. Badass on so many levels. Love the casual mention of your previous firm and the EV truck. My friends are always blown away by my engineering and fabrication work but then I tell them about you... puts things into perspective for them. There’s always a next level.
At startup I thought Scrappy was going to completely come apart lol. So much power and thrust from the prop.. Wow!!! Can't wait to see the titanium-carbon fiber reinforced wings lol. Amazing work, Mike. You are the Nikola Tesla of Airplanes. The Wright Brothers are smiling from ear to ear watching this.
Iam 82 old and live in Idaho and flew all over the back country and even moved to Alaska and flew there,. I had a few planes first A 172 -next a 182 then a new 182 -180 - 185 - 206 and back to a old 180 but loved it . this man Mike is wonderful. Keep it up.
@Matt Diamond who is we?!? If you would take those blinders off and realize that "we" are all ignorant in some areas, which we can slowly change, but very smart in others, then you would understand that Mike Patey is just as smart as he has always been, and a genius in what he does in fabricating. Don't like the pilot, jump, "with or without a parachute", now! Have a day! :o)
I just KNOW the wing will be in design stage until the last rivet is driven home. We won't know until Scappy is finished (if it ever truly is) if it will have slats, slots, Fowlers, spoilers, stall fences, speed brakes, rock-scorching lights, or all of the above. Can't wait to watch the build!
@@tanguyadriaenssen9755 The baffled center tank is probably good for at least a few gallons... but with all the cubes on that engine it's probably thirsty!
"why do we always start our engines for the first time at night?" -Mike "That's when you work" -Mikes friend "good point" -Mike god what a awesome answer and response, had top re--watch it as it gave me a good laugh. Keep up the good work and back to work, scrappy need her wings ^^
Mike sticks two fingers up to all the so called 'experts' out there by doing it his way. This plane is superb, its well thought out and done to a very high standard. Nothing wrong with having this much power, it's actually safer than a low powered plane. It can get you out of trouble in the air and will have much shorter take off. Great work. Greetings from Russia.. ❤️
G’day Mike Chandra & Co ;-) Wahoo... Happy Birthday Scrappy! “Build It They Will Come” “Everything Is Energy & Frequency” “You’re Gonna Need A Bigger Hanger”. Lol.. With many source blessings with truth love light laughter joy fun play happiness creativity adventures and may peace be with you all! Victoria Australia xoxo
Just discovered your channel. As a hot rodder, an off-roader and an F-15 Eagle maintainer of 34 years, I totally dig what you have created. As an Eagle Keeper, the world's ultimate hot rod, I can totally appreciate putting a big engine into a small package. Good stuff! I just subscribed.
@Hydin Biden Well, yeah, the Blackbird was faster and flew higher... but the Eagle set numerous time to altitude records and I'm pretty sure is more maneuverable. Probably easier to maintain as well. Never worked the Blackbird but I've heard the horror stories.
I have no words that can convey the emotions you are creating with this build. You are above and beyond most of us. Thank you for taking the time needed to show us, FOR FREE, the insane amount of work it takes to build a flyable work of art. Two thumbs up and Know you have inspired everyone that's been exposed to the privilege of your videos. Carry on with your bad ass self!!
I can’t remember ever being this excited to see a project come together. I’m still convinced this is a hybrid airplane or need be helicopter! Let’s get this awesome project in the air and out to be seen.
I like this guy. Kind of a showoff but in a humble, happy, enthusiastic, educational manner. Love it. I have no knowledge of airplanes but definitely subscribing to the channel. And the plane is awesome as hell. What a great engineer.
That ending is such a tease! The way it lurched forward after the first crank and the just the sound! Your killing me! I can't wait to see more! (did I use enough "!" in this comment?)
That throttle and mixture linkage is a thing of beauty! Honestly it is a bit of a shame that so much gorgeous engineering will ultimately be covered-up. Keep up the good work Mike, your positivity and enthusiasm are infectious and are definitely keeping my head above water this morning!
YES YES YES!!!! I put this video on the home theater and cranked up the volume. I could see the wife's mouth moving but couldn't hear her yells. Thanks Mike!!!!
Totally BAD ASS Mike. That's sooooooo cool, it's gonna rip for sure. I can't wait until you fly it for the first time. It sounds awesome too 👍👍👍 You da man !!!
The content is so incredible... its easy to overlook the absolute pro level editing in these videos. Great sense of humor and really adds to the videos. So here is a nod to the editor! Also, holy shit mike so excited for you! What an awesome project. I just passed my A&P tests this last week. I am constantly inspired by you and your thoughts for safety and just engineering in general. Hope i end up half the mechanic and engineer you are. Hope to meet you some day too.
I'm in my last semester of powerplant right now. Gotta take general and airframe tests still cause covid delayed that for me. Its really cool listening to Mike talk, and understand what he's talking about. Little stuff like the slack in the throttle and mixture control cables.
It'd be cool to see a video with PeterSripol. He is working his way up from making RC planes to full size planes. It's inspiring to see someone just starting out all the way to someone who has done this many times. Both typically shoot for it's not practical or end up there.
It's nothing short of amazing. Watching someone put their dream together one part at a time. One can almost feel the nervousness and anticipation he feels as he created his dream to share with the world. I know this man's feelings, but on a much smaller scale having created the motorcycle of my dreams. Thank you so much for sharing your dream with the world....
Jean and I shave a Great Deal of Respect for you Brother and we Both TY for the Excellent Videos and your Humor and Humanity ( Jean is Terminally ill ) you do make her Smile 😊
Mike I've always herd. Headers this and Headers that and they perform better and sound better. But I have never understood how and why. Thank you for making that so easy to grasp. Another great video!
Top 5 reasons there were only 9 seconds shown of Scrappy running... 5. Mike got something in his eye. 4. It only ran for 8 sec. 3. With no piped past the headers it was too loud, & the neighbors complained. 2. The cameraman lost the rest of the footage...... AND THE NUMBER 1 REASON 1. The pick-up couldn't hold it back, even with his wife standing in the brakes....😜👍👍
There is a part of me that thinks you should just let off the engine cowling to give it that "Mad Max Look" LOL. Love IT. I also think with that suspension you should try to enter it in a desert race. Just Because!
What a finish...man, what a tease. Can't wait for the static thrust test....will prove to make Scrappy "practical" after all as it could double as a tow truck...
stefan w my dad told be, after WWII he say a guy put a Spitfire Rolls-Royce engine in a car. As it drove down the highway at 80 miles an hour he could give it gas and smoke the tires
Its great but that's a Shout that not correct I could name some excellent Aircraft that would blow Your mind, Don't get Me wrong it's a great build but No1 no chance.
I miss the old video formats. Long videos in-depth step by step. An less of this leting us hear the sound of the plane running an showing us a still arcraft. Then leaving the audience hanging
I got this figured out now Mike, Scrappy is actually the new advanced TUG prototype for SpaceX's Starship! They won't need a Super Heavy booster, Scrappy will simply whip starship into orbit!
Man I wanted to see video of it at full howl! 😢😢 Why does it always seem to be late at night, because like someone said that is when we work on them!! 👍👍
That double sheathing on the electric cable is something I wish I had on my semi. I had my main battery cables rub over each other right next to my fuel tank and catch fire. I was able to put it out and disconnect the battery before the fuel caught. It was a scary few moments there. I'd hate something like that to happen in the air.
The tube the wiring bundle is tied to is called a 'raceway'. Keeps chaifing and dangling wires to a minimum. I used to make and repair acft engine wire harnesses. He's right - that's the smoothest sounding recip engine I've ever heard...
