And hey, SO many of these names are so simple, that when there was a deeper one, it felt really cool! But we arent 100% happy with our explanations of EVERY name. Some of them seem simple but feel like they could have something deeper, but after hours of research brought up nothing, we had to go with "I guess its just this simple name and changed a bit to sound cool.' But maybe you know something we don't. (That's pretty common.) So let us know what we missed here in the comments!
Ah, so a thing about Junior. In Monster Rancher DS, when you beat the Official S Class Cup, someone uses the Star Rock to accidentally summon the Four Heavenly Kings. Among them is a Junior called Centauros, and after you beat all 4 he summons the 12 Zodiac Monsters into the world. Junior is one of them, so it's possible that it's named Junior because it's Centauros's successor.
Seeing people's reaction to Monol is always funny cuz they're always like "it's...just a wall??" But hoo boy wait till you see that thing in battle. Freaky ass wall.
I love Monster Rancher, still do, the series had so much potential and the games were so creative for their time (Basically they read other games, DVDs and CDs and generated a random monster! It was ahead of its time in my opinion. The later DS title generated a monster based on your drawings, words and vocals.) My all time favorite monster is Hotrod, which was a Zuum monster in Monster Rancher 3, sadly not included in later games. He was my first real Monster and I was genuinely upset when he passed away. :'( Thank you for bringing attention to this series! I am forever hopeful that it will be revived someday.
Fingers crossed! They bought a western license for monster rancher back in May so here's hoping they port the remasters to North America! This is one of those franchises I adored through the years and I hope we get to revisit the original games soon! Also I would love a new game that I could link my Spotify to or RU-vid videos or something to create monsters 😂 it would be a really fun way to modernize it!
@@3amhellbeast How the ports work, is you search for a CD via Artist or Album and it generates from the data. Though it only works with music so Game Specific Rare Monsters are impossible to find with ease
well we're getting some projects on it's anniversary according to tecmo so its on its way back into the limelight, probably thanks to the switch and android port sales its gotten
@@11-devonb25 A cat turns dog which turns back into a cat that turns into a female angel wearing what I can only describe as PG bondage wear. And that's just one of the main ones from the first series
I still have one of Mocchi, and for years didn't know from where it was, I even thought it was a Pokémon I didn't knew, when I was like 10 I even asked my sister's (then) boyfriend if it was a Pokémon cause he kinda liked it too
6:19 Abyss can also come from Anubis, which sounds similar an provides the design. Anubis was the ancient Egyptian god of mummification and the guide to the afterlife, which is fitting being combined with Abyss which has death-like connotations.
25:33 Ornamengar is based on Japanese New Year festivals. You've got the traditional sandals, and bamboo legs to reference the kadomatsu (bamboo bouquet decoration thing). Its hands are a paintbrush and what appears to be a fan or banner. My guess for the arms and shoulders is that they are meant to represent the flowing sleeves of a Shinto priest along with one of those sticks with paper streamers they wave around. The body is a scroll with what looks like "gashou" (賀正) in kanji painted on it, an exclamation of New Year celebration. And the head is a kagami mochi, a two layer rice cake topped with an orange served at New Year. Sorry for Gaijin Goomba'ing out there but it was a bit annoying how you brushed over that one in 5 seconds, when it's such an out-there design with some clear cultural background :P
This brings back memories. I played Monster Rancher 2 so much when I was younger.. I remember going and bothering as many movies and cds as possible to see what monsters i could get.
I actually liked that Monol thing. I usually went with the monsters with high intelligence because the attacks were always flashy but usually defense is low, while monol was one of few that had high intelligence high defense.
Oh man, this brought back memories. I used to watch the show and play the game on ps1 for hours. I think i still have it actually. Might bring out my ps1 again out of the attic.
Honestly surprised you didn't catch the "Omoro knight" looking like a gundam with all the signature colors of one, and sounding like the protagonist's name "Amuro".
Now I don't know what the frick a Monster Rancher is (well until this video I guess). What I do know is that Lockstin's clickbait game is becoming a bit too powerful for it's own good if you ask me.
I hope you do Yo-kai Watch next. The names from there range from really cool, to simple, to... terrible. I love the series and would love to hear some of the inspirations from some yo-kai that I don't know their inspirations for. There are quite a lot of them though, and just wait until you see how many forms of Jibanyan there are.
Yo-Kai Watch: where 75% of Yo-Kai are cats. Even if they are supposed to be dogs they still look like cats. The only ones that aren’t cats are Squeakcheeks which is literally a “butthead” and other similar things. And yes I have Yo-Kai Watch for the 3DS. It’s fun and I do love it. I just like to poke fun at this Ghost Busters homage confused for a Pokémon rip-off.
There seem to be quite a lot of missing monsters and even some families that were omitted. Seriously none of the Jellies, and ignoring subspecies like Granity (Pixie + Golem), Futurity, and far too many to list right now.
Hm did they change the name in the cartoon since instead of granity it was minty or was it because it was a big blue and a pixie fused instead of a normal golem?
Hey Gnoggin! Been watching you for years, pretty much since the crossover days and just noticed you hit 1 million subs! Just wanted to say congratulations! Also it's great to see that you're covering other Monster Taming Games, it's rare that I see other channels cover them so it's definitely refreshing :)
The main reason I wanted to get into Pokémon back when it first hit the states was because it seemed a lot like Monster Rancher, which at the time was my favorite game.
Chaos dragon looks like the Yugioh Monster "Chaos Emperor Dragon - Envoy of the end", but with his colors swapped out. It's almost the same color scheme like its retrain "Chaos Emperor Dragon, the Dragon of Armageddon" Also Rabicho looks like Eevee
King Tut Duck could be a reference to the fact that King Tut's tomb had several items with ducks on them, including his childhood clothes. It's believed that ducks may have been his favorite animal.
@@magmos6346 Heyy thanks!! It;s so spoooky!! if you meet it in real life you can never predict its attack pattern. it just busts out spikes, lasers, tentacles out of itself :O and multiplies too? that's OP.
@@SeantheDracunyan76 it's sadly a series that can't exist as the whole premise was you gain your monsters by mystery disc. The mystery discs, according to the game, are rare power discs that could hold information, I.E. CDs and DVDs.
This game was an emotional rollercoaster for me as a kid. I always had to take a break from the game every time a monster of mine died. Maybe I should play this game again for nostalgia sake
I love the fact that you did Monster Rancher. You forgot about a lot of Monsters (Metalner, Undine, Ape, Worm, Zuum, Dino, Mock, Hopper, Jill, Ghost, Jell, Niton, Zilla, Wracky, Kato and Arrow Head)
17:00 The name "Doodle" is actually a reference to a monster that appeared in the first game, that was just a smaller version of that design, a living drawing that would attack in cartoonish ways
6:18 They're also jackal-headed, like the the Egyptian death god, Anubis, who also wields a crook staff (let it be known that Rolf, son of a Shepard is a death god lol).
Something I want to point out about Color Pandoras. In one of the games (3 or 4? Can’t remember which, I played both often as a kid) they’re actually called Koropandoras! They block attacks by getting in a line formation (segments of a line) and at least one of their attacks has the three connecting and rolling like a circle to hit the enemy! Cute little guys.
@@Chris-fz2ui it was a genuinely fun game, the ps2 games had a cool trick where if you had the game on and put literally any CD in the game it would spit out different monsters. Music cds, dvds and other games.
19:25 "Merchava" is also the hebrew word for a war vehicle, mostly refering to chariots. Its a corruption of "Rechev", which is just the word for vehicle.
32:00 Pretty sure this one is also a Gundam reference as sometimes the tiny satellite lasers such as Gundam Rose's Rose Bits are called bits. Though the first ones were ν Gundam's Fin Funnels.
I'd love to see you cover names from Yo-Kai Watch since I grew up with the first and second games on the DS! Yes, all of the "second games" including the one that let you friend Wicked Yo-Kai. XD
You've no idea how happy you just made me to see you have anything to do with the Monster Farm series! I've only been able to play the first two. They were huge parts of my childhood! Wish it became more popular over here, tbh. Really an under-rated series, controversial monster type ideas not withstanding, i suppose
Btw, "Daton" could also be a loose referense to datenshi, japanese for fallen angel. The pixie species seems to be impish, overall. it's worth considering, i think
13:22 That's an _anime_ mecha not a zord... The name is even literally a Mazinger Z reference. 13:33 And that one's name is a Combattler V reference. Which is ironic because the previous one looks more like Combattler. 21:40 And this one looks like Mazi- Why are they mixing up the letters?
Gadgeter G reminds me of GaoGaiGar. Drilleron V resembles Getter 2. RoboRabi X is blatantly based on Mazinger Z. Omoro Knight seems like a possible Gundam reference, and Gobi's head is definitely the Zaku's.
@@NovaSaber _Maybe_ GaoGaiGar with Gundam colors, which is basically Gundam Tryon 3 but I'm sure that came _after_ Gageteer G and Tryon 3 doesn't have wings anyway (as the name suggests, Combattler V is made out of _five_ robots). Also I'm pretty sure Drilleron V is based on Gurren Lagann as it's exclusive to My Monster Rancher, which came out in 2011, while Gurren Lagann came out in 2007.
I know I've said this on a few of your videos in this series but after the digemon video I think you could make an interesting video on spectrobes which is also a collectable monster game from a couple yrs back
Your unenthusiasm for half of these is hilarious. And I think you’re giving too much credit for the other half of the explanations, they all just feel so lazy it’s hard to imagine they have any thought to any of these.
23:40 Mewbat- A Devilman Reference. Also a number of creatures gained Abyss, Falco, and Xenon as subtypes, originally being their own uniques. Like White Mocchi being the final boss of Monster Rancher 2, and partner to Holly.
When you said "that's all of the purebreeds" my heart sunk alittle. Where's m'boy Arrowhead... that has an arrow... for a head. Yes. And what about Worm, that... is... a worm... and there are quite a few more that I don't really cared about either :)
recently re-watched one of proton jon's old livestream's where he played monster rancher 2 and ended up with a monol main with worm sub a soboros and to describe how an early game monol fights well....."FALL ON HIM WALL!!"
23:33 Shotaro Ishinomori's Skull Man and Shocker from Kamen Rider are talking to their lawyers. They _did_ successfully get rid of Skullomania for a while after all. Then Fighting EX Layer and SNK Heroines happened....
I know I'm a bit late to the comment party, but something interesting I saw with Skull Mew at 23:34 The markings on it's front may just be a ribcage and pelvis bone but they also bare a very similar design to the Leviathan Cross or Brimstone Cross.
33:39 This name really should have worked in the word "mimic" because it's an RPG mimic, dating back to the first edition D&D monsters that pose as treasure chests.
Always wanted to. Wasn't on Nintendo consoles that I'm aware of. But loved what of the anime I was able to get my hands on as a kid. Honestly, maybe even more than Pokemon, at least till I got bored of rewatching the first 5 episodes.
37:13 no that's definitely not it. i've noticed alot of missing monsters on the list including one of the base monsters "worm". i also noticed alot of the names were changed as well. also monster rancher started up a new twitter[new-ish since it has been up for 2+ years] and rumors are there is a new monster rancher game in the making
I LOVED playing Monster Rancher on PS1 back in the day. I remember things like the Suezo, Tiger, Pixie, Hengar, Naga, Gali and Monol monster types. I had this Allure that I fed so many of the charred snakes that she actually started to like them. She was a beast in combat too. XD
Undine has had so many changes to it over the franchise's lifespan. First it was its own species, then it was a Pixie/Jell breed, now apparently it's a Pixie/Lesione breed.
Yeah some of their names are really obvious of what they're based off of like angelmon it's basically an angel monster because the word mon means monster
@@rho-starmkl4483 I have no idea how many there are. In the reference book, there's over 1400 but there are more without reference book entries. Probably close to 1000 themselves.
Mewbat also looks incredibly similar to Devilman from the Go Nagai manga, well, Devilman. I'd be willing to say it's a really clear reference, though, Devilman is probably the singlehandedly most mature manga on the face of this planet.
You should definetely try and explain all names of yo-kais in Yo-kai Watch 3, that will be a real challenge... Especially with the localization problems that game had
My first thought for "Rollbeat" at 19:35 was Roll from the Megaman.exe series, with the palette and heart theme. "Beat" is another character from the megaman series since they are mostly music based names.
From the appearance, Abyss might also be from Anubis, the jackel god of embalming and/or the dead. Nothing else to say since I have no experience with the series.
so a funny thing about Eggplantern, the way you obtain certain rare monsters in MR2 is through using special CD's or games. You wanna guess what CD is needed to summon Eggplantern? *You need the soundtrack CD for the movie "Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me".* the devs of these games really have an interesting sense of humor
I remember seeing snippets of Monster Rancher during a week-long stay in the hospital as a kid and falling in love with the monster designs in the main cast. And the theme song has lived in my head rent-free for the 20 years since then. I'm SUPER hyped to see Digimon content on this channel and, while I think Yo-Kai Watch may have a similar name issue to Monster Rancher, I'd still love to see that too!!!
You should do this for Monster Sanctuary. It’s not a very widely known game but it’s very interesting and takes from various mythologies and history, like Mesopotamian and such
I remember Monster Rancher. Monster’s Rule! I still have a DVD with the first 8 episodes and I have homemade DVD’s from old VHS recordings. I even have episodes that only aired ONCE. I don’t think I can upload them though because of copyright. At least I have a personal collection of 57 out of over 70 English episodes.
Oh, right, that series was called Monster Rancher. A while ago I thought of that show again but I had no idea anymore what it was called. I actually never watched it, I think my sister did.
yea loved this series when I was a kid XD nostalgia factor lol. Also love how you're diving deep into all these different monster collectors ~ P.S. 36:05 pretty sure "hana" means flower in Japanese
I'll be honest, the best part of this was not the monster rancher, but hearing you talk about Keroro Gunsou. That was one of the first anime I binged when I found the wide world of anime pirating. I remember even watching some episodes on youtube, back when they had episodes in 3 parts because there was a 10 minute time limit for videos. Aaaaaah good times. I think youre on to something with the names being the reason monster rancher didn't catch on.
Years ago I played Monster Rancher 1, popped Green Days - Nimrod into the drive... and out popped a blue furry mattress. I didn't see it in the video and so ended up googling it... its name was "Blue Sponge". You're probably right about the names being the issue with its longevity.
When I was a kid I didn't understand how to breed them as at the time I didn't speak nor knew how to read English, and I also got attached to the first monsters that I had and didn't want to change them. So I went trough the entire story of the game with just the first monsters that you get. Needless to say, I made my life harder for no reason lol.
