This plant is so brilliant! The new leaves know their position in the plant. That’s why the younger leaves don’t have slits. And then the taller leaves know that’ll be over the small ones so that’s why they come out with more and more slits. Tge slits allow sun pass through the top leaves and reach the bottom leaves.
@ArtSchoolWithAlia
@ArtSchoolWithAlia 3 года назад
Also your plant is okay! It’ll get so many more slits. I give mine liquid fertilizer every single watering so almost every day during warmer months and I’ve gotten four new leaves this month! I highly suggest “hasta gro plant” for liquid fertilizer.

Called a Fruit Salad plant because it actually produces an unusual edible fruit that tastes like a variety of other tropical fruits. Won't produce fruit indoors, but if adapted to outdoors and into a situation where it gets an unusually large amount of direct light it will produce a lot of fruit. The key is to transition it to more light if planning on growing outdoors AND you want fruit. Welcome!!

If you're thinking of repotting, earlier rather than later would probably be better. At least in the UK the weather hasn't quite turned here yet so I'd do it now. But, some people say it doesn't really matter that much so if you need to repot, repot.

Each big stem/branch is around a metre tall, I’m wondering how I can make it a little fuller?

If you're interested in a fuller plant, it's probably worth chopping and propping. then replanting those props back into the original plant once they've rooted

Hi Emma!! I’ve had this plant for nearly five years and has fifteen leaves and has only ever had one very young leaf split that has since broken off over the years. Is there a reason why the leaves would never split? It’s definitely healthy and thriving, just without split leaves!
@GoodGrowing
@GoodGrowing 4 года назад
Hmmmm... I'm not too sure why this would occur. My first thought would be maybe its not getting enough bring, indirect light? They need the light in order to get splits. Or maybe it's a philodendron of some sort (sometimes they look like monsteras and they can occasionally have split leaves)... If you DM me a picture on insta (@goodgrowing) I may be able to better help!

Aww thank you! Yeah that is totally normal. Because they are technically vines, they will kind of sprawl out unless you give them something to climb, like a moss pole. It also could be reaching for the light if it's in a darker spot.

My new monstera plant pretty short I think it’s more then one ‘plant’, in one pot which might be the issue but a lot of my leaves easily drop (3-4, in two weeks) or fall out when touched. It seems pretty mature as it has lots of wholes, and I was wondering if this could be due to something I am doing?? I try to water it once a week, and have it in my bathroom for humid (my house is dry) and good lighting, although my house is traditionally cold or if this is something normal and I haven’t heard anyone talk about it!!
@GoodGrowing
@GoodGrowing 4 года назад
Hmmm sorry to hear that yours isn't doing too well. From what you've said, it sounds like overwatering. Watering once a week seems like quite a lot if it's also getting humidity from the bathroom. Also if it's quite cold it won't need nearly as much. I'd say check the soil before you water it next time. If it's not dry a few inches down, don't water it.

That leaf had less holes in it because it was from a different plant. You have quite a few different vines in there, and each vine will start getting splits on around the 5th leaf to grow. I have one with like 7 different vines in the pot. Each one got varying levels of fenestration on the 5th leaf

Some of the leaves of my plant have large brown spots of them. Have checked for root rot but roots seemed ok. It was a bit pot bound so re-potted. I have been careful not to over water. What could it be. I pruned off the browning leaves. Was that right?
@GoodGrowing

I have my monstera in a north facing window with no direct sunlight at all and it seems pretty happy there. It has fewer fenestrations but the fenestrations seem to be coming from the other leaves that have fenestrations already. It there any reason for this?

What size mossing pole/post should I choose for my plant that's in an 8 inch pot? And is it alright to just insert the mossing post, as I already replanted from the 6 inch pot it came in to the 8 inch it's in now. She's growing everywhere but up lol
@GoodGrowing
@GoodGrowing 3 года назад
I'd say go for a moss pole that looks proportional to your plant. I find it easier to repot in order to get the pole into the right place without harming the roots too much

I have been given a large leaf with a nice stem but not much of a node and I wonder if there might be enough nodal material as the end of the stem is rather fat. Do you think I might succeed in growing a new plant?
@GoodGrowing
@GoodGrowing 4 года назад
Hmm that's tough to say without seeing a photo. I won't say it can't happen because I'm pretty sure I've heard stories of it happening to some people. But I will say it is pretty unlikely unless you have a full node in there. Best of luck!

@GoodGrowing
@GoodGrowing 3 года назад
Recommending pots is hard because it so much depends on your style and taste. But if you want to plant straight into it be sure to get one with drainage as they NEED that. If you plan to keep it in the nursery pot and put a decorative pot over, holes aren't necessary! Good luck! :)

@GoodGrowing
@GoodGrowing 4 года назад
If you live in the northern hemisphere, you've got plenty of time before winter for it to gain more strength and get settled. If you're in the southern hemisphere and approaching winter now, maybe think about getting a grow light to supplement it? Either way though, monsteras are pretty hardy plants! Good luck!

You're monstera is too cute. Now that mine is growing the bottom stem is much smaller than the top stem do you think I should cut the larger part because I don't think it will hold up if I don't use sticks to brace it up?

If one of my leaves has just one split, will it split more or is that it? :(

That specific leaf will not split more in time. But as more leaves grow, hopefully the leaves will have more and more splits!

Should I cut off the leaves that don’t have splits? Is it takingnup energy that could be used to grow new leaves?
@GoodGrowing
@GoodGrowing 3 года назад
No I'd say don't unless they are damaged or dying. Because those leaves are also creating energy for the plant to use as well! Patience is key with these ones. More splits will come in time with proper care and bright indirect light!

I read online that the leaves on top split also for the smaller leaves at the base so the bottom leaves can get light from the sun bc of where they are in the wild :)

If you've just got one cutting, it will just be one vine, which you can then cut up when it's longer and plant more around it. But it will not produce more vines without your help

Hey girl! My monstera deliciosa has started to turn brown/black on the sides of the leaves. There is also some white powder on some of the leaves which I have never witnessed before with any of my other plants. Do you know the cause of this? Thanks
@GoodGrowing
@GoodGrowing 3 года назад
Hey! Oh no that doesn't sound good! Hmm the only time i've experienced browning like that with my monstera was when the leaves got burnt. Is your plant getting direct sunlight? As for the white powder it could be mineral deposits from the water you're using to water/mist/humidify with. Or it could be a sign of pests like mealy bugs. It's hard to know without pictures. You can DM me on insta and I may be able to better help!

Possibly dumb question but I'm really new to plants. How do you suggest making sure it continues to get good drainage as an indoor plant once it gets huge? Do you just get a big catch plate with rocks so it doesn't soak in the water or do you have to take it outside to drain?
@GoodGrowing
@GoodGrowing Год назад
as long as you keep it in a pot with a hole at the bottom that lets water drain out when you water, you should be fine, regardless of size

@GoodGrowing

You can do if you want. The smaller older leaves will eventually yellow and die off when the plant no longer needs them to help produce energy. I personally leave mine until then

Hi Emma,I watered my monstera about a week ago,and yesterday I found 2 leaves (the older ones with split) turning yellow...top soil is still damp,could it be overwatering?or could it be old leaves shedding their life?
@GoodGrowing
@GoodGrowing 4 года назад
Hey! Hmm it sounds like it could be overwatering.. does the pot it's in have drainage? When you say old leaves do you mean older or more mature? Older being have been on the plant longer, more mature being grown later but are likely bigger with more splits. Also have you checked the plant for pests?

Soo quick question 🤔 my monstera has started drooping. It’s stems are rather long and thin so I thought it was reaching for light buutt now idk. Is it underwatered is it overwatered 🧐 oy vey 🤦🏽‍♀️one of the older smaller leaves went yellow last time I watered so I thought over but I touched the soil and it’s bone dry....🤷🏽‍♀️🤷🏽‍♀️
@GoodGrowing
@GoodGrowing 4 года назад
Typically wilting is a sign of thirst in plants, and if the soil is bone dry you should defo water it. Older leaves yellow as the plant matures, it stops focusing on the small old leaves and puts more energy into creating bigger, better leaves. So if it was just one old leave that yellowed you're probably alright. Hope this helps! Best of luck!
@luciafeltovich896
@luciafeltovich896 4 года назад
long thin stems is usually a sign that the plant is reaching for more light
@bariton3779
@bariton3779 3 года назад
make sure it's not just surface soil thats dry, usually you want about the top third of the soil to be bone dry before you water again.

@@Elarasmommy I see. It may be for outdoor plants? I don't think it'll be too big of an issue. Just keep an eye on your plant. If it starts to take a turn, may be worth repotting in some indoor houseplant soil. :)

I have a new monstera and its growing great (unreal to wake up and compare pictures from the morning before they grow fast!!) but there is 2 leaves & stems that seem to be dying - turning yellow/brown in color & no visual growth that i can tell. I was told to snip these off as they are taking more nutrients than giving. Is this true? If so, where on the stem do i snip?
@gyallington
@gyallington 4 года назад
oh also.. would you recommend turning this plant often to prevent it from growing towards the sun and being limp? thanks so much if you see this, your video helped me so much!
@GoodGrowing
@GoodGrowing 3 года назад
Yeah they can be magnificent beings for sure! Hmm that's odd. Have you checked those leaves (and the rest of the plant) for pests? Snipping them off is probably the best thing to do, yeah. I'm not too sure where to snip though. I've snipped just the top of stem before in hopes that a new leaf could still emerge, none have yet. But you could cut just above the node I would think. Good luck!

If I cut off a part of it to propagate will the mother plant still grow new leafs from that spot?

Typically, nothing will grow from the point you cut it, but slightly lower down a new growth point may form and start growing from there.
