/ jimquisition bsky.app/profi... www.thejimporiu... Konami showed off a lot of Silent Hill 2 Remake recently. It has some promising stuff. Unfortunately, a lot of that promise is of bad, bad nonsense.
That's odd indeed, these corporations should be experts on the subject 🤔 After all, they constantly abuse and act inappropriately towards their employees
Taking a different meaning, I definitely wouldn't recommend 'fucking' Konami. You have no idea what diseases would infect you but you're guarranteed to get at least one.
Just sayin', a shambling Uncanny Valley approximation of something I'd recognize from days gone by brought to life by an inability to let go of the past and move on is something that should be in a Silent Hill game, not a descriptor of the game itself.
You think this is the fate of every great story, eventually? That it'll be legally owned by people who don't understand it, but still want to beat its corpse hoping gold bars fly out?
That's a fascinating theorum. I'll try to make sure to credit you if it gains popularity. You want it called 'the Twitchy Principle' or 'McExorcism's Law'?
"You either die a hero or live long enough to become... Whatever the fuuuuckkk this eldritch horror is" - Bobby Kotick (oddly said while smacking his lips grotesquely while his greed boner be Poppin)
The annoying thing is, if the game doesn't sell then Konami will think people aren't bothered about SH anymore and then just sit on the franchise, because as expected they always miss the point.
It's better this way anyway, Konami isn't healing, they aren't building teams and fostering internal talents, they are only hiring third parties to churn out games from their massive IP bag. It would be better to just stay on their pachinko lane.
They already think the public doesn't want Silent Hill, that's why they're doing a remake. They cancelled the game that was supposed to grow out of PT for...reasons. Some MBA chud probably did some "focus group" bullshit, most likely mandated to find any reason to not spend the money on a new game in the franchise, because shunting a remake of an already existing game to a third party was cheaper. So if this flops they could say, "see, we were right!" Or if it does well they could say, "see, no one wanted PT, they just wanted remakes!" This constant churn of making things that already exist and that, in many cases, I already played and don't want to play again with better graphics, has pushed me to largely not buy anything anymore. Gamers™️ are killing the medium for me because they're not very smart and they don't know how to articulate what they actually want. There's also the racism, misogyny, and homophobia that's poisoning the groundwater too...
@@ChristopherSadlowski The online space leans right for a lot of reasons, but gaming especially. The worst parts of being online often come from that type. Billionaires fund youtube channels and news orgs that target that demographic
@@Dante3214 Yeah it's a crying shame too because a lot of games messages are about the exact opposite. And you know it's the people who whine about graphics/realism being the end all peak of gaming... those are people who are ruining it for the people who really care about Video games as a medium to tell a story, to have a deep experience, to be the art it truly can be. I have learned so much from the games I have played because I'm open to truly living in the experience and trying to understand what the devs wanted to say.
For buying a remake of one of the most iconic horror games ever made in advance, you gain the "reward" of making the entire game not even remotely scary
I don't think it's that big of a deal given that I find it hard to believe that someone that has no idea what SH2 is about would spend the extra money on. That sort of person would probably 1) not realize it's a horror game they're buying and 2) not pay a single moment of attention to the story anyway since they're so oblivious to things.
Maria wasn't even that sexualised, I do not understand the need to cover up??? She's not running around silent hill hellscape in a sparkly string bikini or something, it's just... A casually sexy lady???? I'm so confused.
You can't be sexy anymore now It's illegal and offensive or something smh Not being serious or defending these decisions there, just attempting to joke about it, mh...
as an LGBTQ+ woke human who is the source of all the gaming industry's woes, I can't wait for my apology for being blamed for suits making dumb decisions based on what was popular five years ago. I definitely won't be holding my breath
If anyone can find a way to frame abusers as sympathetic (like Abstract Daddy) and blame a victim of sexual abuse (like Angela), it's Bloober Team. I looked on Ebay for the PAL version of Silent Hill 2 and the first result is €99.99 (plus €15.99 shipping from Portugal). Until the OG PC version comes to GOG (which you can add the Enhanced Edition mod), piracy IS the only ethical option people have. If Konami can bring back musician Akira Yamaoka and monster artist Masahiro Ito but not the original game's director Masashi Tsuboyama, character designer Hiroyuki Owaku or writer Takayoshi Sato on board to tell off Bloober Team's top brass and staff whenever they do something stupid, then why should we support the official release?
I was disappointet when I realized those James costume showcases were just silly in-game costumes and not actual physical figurines. As expected from a "deluxe" thing, including the dreaded "early access".
One thing I never noticed about the Silent Hill 2 nurses until recently: their heads are supposed to be turned backwards and their faces are hidden by their headware. Because James isn't interested in another woman's face.
Any chance you can point me to some original art or something to support this hypothesis? I don't trust third party sculpts and everything else I'm finding is deviantart and cosplay so I'm not sure where to land on your theory, it just looks like they've all got bandages on, which is what I'd always assumed was the intent. Frankly, I'd never heard the term "Bubble Head Nurse" before today.
I fully expect them to make her more of an asshole. Given the orginal game also indulges in some victim-shaming (note: shaming, not blaming), I would hope any GOOD developer WOULD change Angela's writing to be more sympathetic (Eddie's too)... it's just that Bloober are not that good developer.
apparently the angela model wasn’t finished in time for the trailer so there were two different models used the game releases in four months. this is gonna run sooooooo smoothly and not be buggy at all
yeah, the last trailer saying "in development" implying it being far enough off they couldn't nail down a year, then this trailer having a release in 4 months is...worrying, to say the least.
As an old, I share Steph's indignation that all of this supposedly "premium" content is just stuff that'd you'd get for free as a gag back in the day. Stop preordering! It's not worth it!
As a certified old myself, I can remember unlocking things for..........god forbid..........actually playing the game. I remember cheat menus in Blitz (big head mode anyone?), the bonus costumes in RE2 and Colt S.A.A. for Claire. I mean hell, Star World in Super Mario World as an extra challenge as a in game secret. Everything I have mentioned and more would be carved out and sold separately now. There was a video I watched a while back where the is a growing trend reemerging of people playing older games, really anything before 2010ish? the BLUF was the simplicity of it all. You got what you paid for and that was it. I myself spent the last few days playing through Strife again because its fun as hell for me.
What's funny about the Droogs thing (since you mentioned it again) is that WB has been doing all this s*** since the '90s! I happened to rewatch Batman and Robin from 1997 and sure enough the Droogs are hanging out in the foreground of a shot of a motorcycle street race scene!
My gawd! I’m still chortling on the certainty that WB has made such unnecessary crossovers on a big scale for so long, so I agree with you for the most part.
I remember horror games back in the ps2 era having silly costumes but they were bonuses for finishing the games, usually on the hardest difficulty something given after you’ve already fully absorbed the narrative and themes. They were also rewards for doing something really hard. Having it be a preorder bonus just feels dystopian.
I wonder if the idea was, "the player has already been a little traumatized by all this dark shit we explored, so let's lighten the mood on subsequent playthroughs so they don't want to jump off the roof after round three"? I mean, at the time Silent Hill was DARK and touched on things that were considered completely inappropriate for the medium. Like all new artistic mediums it eventually matured to the point that really traumatic subject matter is fine to portray and more people are more aware of mental health stuff now, but back then this game was subversive. It could also just be that Japanese sense of humor I don't get. Either way there was most likely a point to the NG+ silliness in the original Silent Hill.
I don't see why this is so bad when it's clearly marketed towards established fans of the series... The ending is 20 years old, I can promise you anyone getting "spoiled" by that cosmetic is young enough not care and probably even enjoy it because of how hooked that generation seems to be on cosmetics and even view them as a status symbol in some instances.
@@aidensnow5017Costumes as status symbols are almost entirely in online games. You seem to not realize the issue is mainly with the fact that it can be used on first time playthroughs, they destroy the atmosphere of every cutscene, not ideal for an emotionally and story heavy horror game. There's so many things wrong with all this.
@@Vanilla_Dpad This argument reminds me of the easy mode/accessibility debate, it's just a difference between "git gud" mechanically vs thematically. What's the difference between silly costumes in a cutscene & skipping a cutscene entirely? Lots of ppl playing video games aren't doing it for the story. I don't have any right to dictate another person's playthrough or admonish someone for not engaging with the product they purchased in the way I would prefer. Especially when it involves an optional feature that has zero impact on my own experience.
I know this wasn't mentioned, but the fact that you can also get a cardboard box head cosmetic too just hammers the point home. "This is our most iconic and infamous character, let's just ignore the subtly of what pyramid head is and slap the main character with it IN CASE THEY DONT UNDERSTAND"
To be honest, he's already been butchered by other Silent Hill media that started including him because "LOOK! It's the guy you know!", despite the fact that he is intrinsically tied to the plot of SH2 and makes absolutely no sense in the other entries. Same thing with SH2's nurses, too.
@@Gammera2000 ...oh man Jason would have a TERRIBLE time in Silent Hill. Bet his would actually look quite a bit like Downpour, what with his water thing.
I find the Slaaneshi real doll joke oddly fitting given how Steph described the monsters, as it’s essentially how daemons come into being in 40k. They are these beings of pure emotion that were born from the combined uncontrolled mental energy of the universe. And just like with Bloober, so often people miss the point of that 😜
@@Roadent1241 We are referring to sex dolls, and Slaanesh is the Chaos god of excess and debauchery sooooo…depends on your tastes. 😜 Steph is saying they look like something a Slaanesh worshipper would think is hot. Just excessively over the top with no subtlety over how depraved it is.
Art is dead, butchered, processed in a factory, and presented to us in breaded cuts resembling the animal it once was. The Dino Nugs of what once was. Well, the AAA side of things. The indie/AA side of game development hasn't forgotten the assignment.
Damn fine analogy there. I'm no veggie, but I've always thought that "breaded cuts resembling the animal it once was" is an especially questionable thing to do.
The Dino nuggies are just content in its purest form, designed for consumption by the largest audience possible, designed to become content for creators and commentary channels, designed for earned media, designed for The Nerd Crew.
Considering this is the same studio that made The Medium and considering that game's ultimate message, them messing up the Silent Hill 2 remake was expected.
The problem with The Medium is the writing, and in this case, the writing was already done for them, two decades ago. So there WAS some vague, *vague* hope that maybe they would just slap on the polished presentation that a modern console can do, and it'd be fine. But... well..
presuming that's actually the message, the screen cuts to black before she fires the gun for a reason. A lot of you are far too uncharitable with your interpretation of that game. Her father being wrong is...kinda the point. She found another way, and until we get a sequel that confirms otherwise I'll maintain steph is wrong about the medium. (and if steph is proven right well...yeah, fuck that game)
@@bryanmoberg8408 The game goes out of its way to humanize her abuser and to state that she's the cause of her abuse and all the pain she's causing tf are you talking about lmao
Being reminded that bloober's Silent Hill 2 remake exists is akin to how when it rains I sometimes feel a slight ache in the ribs I cracked as a teenager.
Never played Silent Hill myself, but a friend of mine did. He doesn't talk much about his time with the OG Silent Hill series, but once trailers for the remake started to pop... Oh boy, he can speak for hours on how much those trailers messed up and disrespected the original.
The reason he doesn't talk much about the games is probably the same reason I don't talk about Silent Hill 2 to my son who loves survival horrors but hasn't played it yet: I don't want to spoil even a little bit of his possible future playthrough.
It really says so much that the Dog/Mira ending was designed with the intent of offering players some relief after the first harrowing runthrough of the game, and now it's just jokey, gimmicky DLC. New players going through this one for the first time are probably going to have whatever joke ending there is this time round utterly ruined for them too.
As much as I enjoy Zmannzilla's editing, I do also miss the old FucKonami News opening with its Wii Channel-esque music. Though "HIT THE LEVER!!!11!" never gets old.
People love to get hyped off of marketing and advertising but then shout you down for judging the parts of the game that are shown. Almost as if they just want people to shut up 🤷♀️
Those people want uncritical consumption. Those people are also...very dumb. They want their comfortable lives without having to think about the mountain of human suffering their comfortable lives are built upon. Their "opinions" can be discarded out of hand.
And the best way to play it will just remain the PS1 version on an emulator... Luckily that's not a big problem because that version plays really well. And to modernize it you would have to pretty radically re-design it. I doubt that it's impossible. but at the very least it won't be the same game anymore. So the remake will always be doomed to be: "Something else" at best or much more easily: "strictly worse".
Satoru Iwata(RIP) 🤝 Stephanie Sterling Seeing unfortunate trends in the Game industry decades ago only for all those events coming to pass in recent years
You hit on something I appreciated with FF7 Rebirth: Not only were its alt costumes in game and not an extra purchase, but for your first playthrough they relegate the use of the costumes to just the Costa del Sol area. That way Barret isn't in a sailor suit for the Dyne stuff and Cloud isn't in beachware for Aerith's death. However, once you unlock New Game+, they then unlock the option for players to use whatever outfits they want at any point. So, it's not spoiled for your first playthrough, you don't have to spend any extra on them, but when you return to the game for future playthroughs, they give you freedom to customize it how you like.
I honestly think we can see a lot of this decontexualisation already start in like the 80s and particularly in the early 00s; looking back, the marketing surrounding things such as the Star Wars prequels was kind of weird and bizarre-Darth Vader was suddenly given an origin story in which he murdered helpless women and children, but he was bigger in the marketing than ever.
@@armelior4610 I guess that’s what happened to various versions of Mowgli, Tarzan, Sherlock Holmes, Robin Hood and Dracula, albeit decades before Star Wars. The Decontextualisation of such famous characters like Dracula was just as ridiculous in those days, but it’s not that obvious like in today’s world.
In episode 1 & 2 and some of 3 he wasn't a murderer, he was just misguided. Including Anakin in the marketing material in any way is completely fine because it isn't solely based on that one moment from episode 3. By your logic, fictional killers should never be included in the marketing because "They brutally murdered le family waahhhh".
@@Szadek23 One of the only scenes I've seen from that "game" is a random guy rambling about collecting berries to make jam or something like that. It honestly feels like a fever dream. A fever dream I might enjoy if it wasn't such a giant scam, but I think that it being a scam actually contributes to how unhinged the whole thing is.
Spice 8 Rack also dwelled on the Ongoing De-Contextualization in modern media, and highlighted it through 20th century philosophy, discussing how neoliberal economic interest cannot allow for originality and novelty. "Destroy the legacy of a critically acclaimed classic horror videogame. Most complete destruction wins. Your time started when you disbanded Team Silent."
The scene when James finds Angela in the cementery presented at the 2024 Sony showcase was devoid of any of the artistic merits the original SH2 had: the carefully picked camera angles for each part of the scene, the eerie way they moved and expressed with their bodies, the strange way they talk and the nuances of the acting that allowed you to know something was wrong with both Angela and James, all these elements combined created were carefully mix in the original to give the player a message. Even the facial expressions expressions are missing... The cinematic artistry (borrowed from films like Jacob's Ladder) has been thrown into the trash in the remake... And sadly I expect the review outlets who are easily impressed by shiny graphics to give glowing reviews to the game without taking into account how much of the artistry and what made the original SH2 a masterpiece was thrown into the trash... And with RNGesus as my witness I will prophetize that SH2 will be in Fortnite because corpos don't care about context .
Given that it was always "the review outlets" who championed SH2 and 3, while they both sold poorly, I doubt they're the ones who will give this positive reviews just because the graphics have a lot of polygons. The first SH was the only game to be both a critical and commercial success; 2, 3, and 4 all reviewed well with publications, but the general public didn't care. It's the 'influencer'-types, who rush to pre-order deluxe editions and stream everything based on how many hairs can be counted on a character's head, that will be the ones missing the point.
"The media we used to enjoy but now consume." Now there is a succinct way to describe modern media and the corporate masters who own it. Thank Gods for you, Steph.

FUCKING THANK YOU!!!!! Been arguing with people on Reddit that this is the ONE instance in which the female characters being sexualized is actually part of the story and main theme of the game and isn't like the other insane situations with people trying to sexualize every female character.
Some people *really* like to misconstrue the oversexualization argument. Fanservice characters aren't inherently wrong, its how the fanservice is utilitized and how the fanservice relates to the character. Maria was designed with this specific intent that it used to further her and James' characters and story. The problem with fanservice is that a lot of it can feel cheap and pointless? Some of these characters just look so silly on the outset that I wonder why or how I'm supposed to take them seriously.
Honestly your recent focus and explanations on context have finally put a definition to the vague feelings that've been nagging at me increasingly for the last few years with how things have been handled. It's really cathartic hearing it put so concisely and thinking you're totally right on people agreeing with you later. Anyways time to wait for the inevitable fortnite and silent hill crossover where pyramid head can suplex sonic the hedgehog.
Psst. Check out the Enhanced Edition. Fan made, open source mod for the PC port that restores it to PS2 quality. I'm using it to play SH2 for the first time.

bloober is going to drop the ball with angela i just know it. im so scared for my girl edit: i remember when homecoming came out and it was a *problem* amongst long time fans that you could get the ufo ending on your first playthrough. fucking hell the mira mask is somehow worse than that. at least with homecoming you could maybe get a normal ending your first time. this is ridiculous
Astro Bot already had a full game, Astro Bot: Rescue Mission, and it was not only one of the best VR games on PS4, it's one of the most fun games I played. Ever.
Bloober is like the worst developer to hand this game to. They have proved between the medium and Blair witch that they do not understand the subtlety of psychological trauma in a story. And overall they've proved that they just can't really make a scary horror game instead of just a walking simulator I want this game to be good, but I do not expect it to be good
Not sure you'll get a review copy of this one, Stef ;) And James' movement animation reminds me of RU-vidr Caddicarus doing an impression of him in a video from years ago.
Hurtling toward the inevitable end??? 😮 I’ll be sad as hell when this series concludes - but will enjoy it until the deliciously bitter end. Great video as always, Steph!
I've already resolved that I'm not going to buy this game. If it's somehow good I might wait and pick it up over half off next year or something if I really want to play. They are trying to make it like this remake is for "both fans and newcomers" meanwhile the entire fan base has been pretty consistent with saying "we don't want this. Just release the original games on Steam already!" So it's definitely not for the fans.
"as we hurtle towards the inevitable end of a series that's often been protested only to be agreed with in later times" Wait what? Is Steph thinking of ending the show?
I’m going to disagree with Multiversus leading to decontextualization of stories into just brands and products on the grounds that it has already occurred (though I think you said the same last episode IIRC). WB already did a huge meaningless crossover back in the Toys-to-Life days with Lego Dimensions (though they at least had the good sense to not feature characters from R-rated franchises). There are more Funko Pops than games at Gamestop. I think I can trace the downfall back to when Ready Player One regurgitated a bunch of references and became a best seller and a Spielberg movie.
You know, Ready Player One really did do irreparable damage to media as a whole. Everything feels the need to constantly regurgitate references. Even *good* adaptations and continuations can't escape it.
There have been some improvements, but each trailer has given me less faith. The sound design is a massive issue. The guns don't have enough punch, melee attacks don't have any impact, the combat looks very mashy, and the character models look like they belong on a ps3 game at best. This is the most effort Konami has put into one of their ips in a while, and even then, it's still underwhelming. I doubt the October 8th date will be enough to get the game up to speed. I didn't even know about the deluxe edition, and yeah, silly Easter eggs like the ufo ending should be saved until after the end of the main game, not given out as costumes that you can start with.
To be fair, the combat in the original silent hill 2 was always pretty bad, but it was really just there to give the game structure. Them switching to an over the shoulder chase cam makes me think they are going to lean more into combat as a core part of the game, which is going to multiply the issues that come from the combat being shitty.
Silent Hill combat was never good. Ever. Go back and listen to how the shotgun sounded in SH1. It was very bad. All the guns were bad in Silent Hill, including the sequels.
Urgh my mum loves these games and she doesn't understand all this stuff about how shit Konami is so I don't know if I should recommend this to her or what I used to help her play them when I was definitely way too young to be playing horror games so the series holds a fair bit of nostalgia to me but God fucking damn it Konami
At this point, might as well go grab an HD texture pack for SH2, play it in an emulator with upscaled graphics, and there, got your faithful HD SH2. It'll surely be better than this blooper from blooper team (hah).

I'm gonna go ahead and do everyone a service and tell you where the 10:35 image comes from. It's a movie called "Deathgasm" and the guy with upside down cross paint on his face actually showed up to this "date, but not a date" as a means to dress up for an important event. Also this movie has a band play a song straight out of Evil Dead which causes the town to turn into deadites.
The Dog Costume is what "The Desert of the Real" looks like. Multi-verses is what "The Desert of the Real" looks likes. The Droogs getting front row seats to watch Bugs Bunny is what "The Desert of the Real" looks like. I'm not quoting The Matrix. I'm reference the work they stole that phrase from, Baudrillard's "Simulacra and Simulation". Instead of being copies or parodies of the ideas they reference, they have become "Simulacra": a symbol which bares no relation to the reality they reference at all. These Simulacra replace the real & their context with a simple easily commodificable & reproducible product which only exist to generate profit for their owners. The Desert of the Real is where every grain of sand is something that meant something to someone once, ground down to nothing in the pursuit of profit over art and meaning. We can pickup a handful of sand and recognize what the grains were as they slip through our fingers, everything that made them real already lost in the wind.

I made sure to avoid all mention of this Konami update, like I do with all announcements these days, because it's a quite simple formula - the triple A space is dogshit, and I'm not wasting time on hope when the chances of the results being shite are FAR FAR higher than good. If it's good, I'll simply wait until it comes out and people review it well. I'll find out then.
the whole "classic skins undermining the theme of the story" thing actually happened with Shadow of the Tomb Raider as well, you could use classic Lara skins from the start and it really makes the story look weird through that lens.
Context does matter. Fortnite and Multiversus are prominent examples. But even going to something like Overwatch. Having these heroes who are supposed to be fighting for the fate of the future wearing bikinis and using a squirt gun takes something from the experience. Skins are cool. But it doesn't take long for the Microtransaction arms race to end up where Team Fortress 2 did with a pile of flaming hats with a giant skull orbiting them glued unceremoniously to the head of every character.
It's still baffling that they're going through with this, no one wants this remake, we literally just want to play the original game, this is putting in more effort, laying down more money, and taking an unnecessary risk just to give people exactly what they don't want
Mentioning context with the story reminds me of how Ned Flanders became a 1 dimensional character all because the first time we see him he's the christian neighbor to the Simpsons and sometime after that, they just focused on that one thing about him and forgot the rest.
Fun fact: the original VA of James almost refused to voice his line in the dog ending because he found it too silly and didn't want it to sully the seriousness of the story. Now he's a 5G conspiracy antivaxer and the CEO of Minmo.
Who could have possibly foreseen that Konami and Bloober would both simultaneously shit both of their separate beds hard enough to cause cross-splatter.
Shameless self plug - I'm working on a horror game that deals with topics of mental illness. Its make made in close collaboration with a dear friend who has the illness and I'm taking great care to represent the particularities of their experience. As I'm getting close to the end of that project, I've also begun some early work on a SH2 inspired game with psx/ps2 style graphics, a narrative about addiction, and a distinctly Aussie flavor. In short, I and many other indie devs are making psychological horror games with the care and attention they deserve, so check out what they have to offer!
I recall reading somewhere that the original inspiration for the Lying Figure was from Masahiro Ito seeing someone walking around outside wearing a hoodie. He took that and 'fleshified' it. So I guess Bloober is....going all out on the hoodie symbolism now?
it came out like 2 months ago and based off RagnaRox's review it's alright (it landed in my "when it's on a discount category" since I've got other games I'm more interested in at the moment)
I'm looking forward to the final release, mainly just to see where on the spectrum from Silent Hill 2 to Silent Hill HD Collection it will fall. I'm personally hoping for a return of the Comic Sans road signs🙃
