Montana Goose Hunting w/ Ryan Callaghan and Miles Nolte | S1E06 | MeatEater Hunts

In this episode, MeatEater’s Conservation Director Ryan "Cal" Callaghan heads out with Fishing Director Miles Nolte for a Canada goose hunt on Cal’s family farm. The guys employ a fairly traditional approach, using layout blinds and full body decoys to hunt a cut cornfield near one of Montana's busiest urban centers. Along the way they battle picky birds and sky-busting neighbors to come up with a pair of geese that make for a damn good breakfast of gizzards, hearts, and farm fresh eggs.

More hunting shows need to show the cooking of the wild game that hunters harvest, an important message for non-hunters to see
@reneruedamores5776

One without the other is no good, completely agree. Preparing the game is just as important as harvesting
@NuisancePanda

I completely agree brother. I want to see more cooking, and I really wish that people understood better that you can take your trophy without being a "Trophy Hunter" the way the media portraits. Just cuz there's a head on the wall does not mean that the animal was not properly harvested for all it was worth. 🤯🔫

I am admittedly late to the game inasmuch as I discovered MeatEater and Steven Rinella just a few weeks ago on Netflix. I have binged since then just watching the series and him as its central character. Allow me to digress for the moment by saying that, as one who recently turned 70 years old, I wish I hunted more often but managed to do that only once about 15 years ago. At that time, a sergeant in the Marine Corps, who I had befriended while he was on his third tour in Iraq, had just returned to the U.S. Shortly after his return, he invited me to join him and six of his fellow Marines to his parents’ home in Arkansas to celebrate his 30th birthday and, while there, to hunt for deer on land not too far from his parents' home. It was my privilege to be with the Sargent and his Marines. While they were serious in their hunting endeavor and had enough hunting gear on them to start World War III, I can still visualize the utter shock in their faces as I, a damn Yankee and civilian from Long Island, was the only hunter on that trip to shoot a deer. I gladly gave the deer to the Marines on the trip as they wanted to bring home venison to their families for Thanksgiving. Having said all this, I write to say how much I enjoy watching the MeatEater series and seeing Steven Rinella do what he loves to do: hunt. Like his series says at the opening of each episode, he hunts to live and lives to hunt. While I have seen numerous RU-vid videos showing guys on hunting trips, not one comes close in describing the joy and the serenity on Steven's face as he goes about on his hunting trips to catch anything that has four legs or can swim and to tell his story to others in the way that he does. While I know of him only by watching his series and the various lectures and interviews he has given, I see him as one who juggles a lot of time-consuming, complicated things in his life while retaining a wonderful simplicity about him. His honest, easy-going, intelligent and thoughtful way about him makes him a joy to watch. Watching him on his hunting trips makes me think of him as an (almost) domesticated wild cat. I say this about him in a good way. Like a cat that will instinctively hunt and kill birds and mice even though it is not hungry and to paw dangling string, I am convinced that if Steven was home and in his bed weak and sick with the flu, he would still unhesitatingly get the rifle that he keeps beside him to stalk and shoot any deer, squirrel or turkey that happens to wander across his backyard. But -- unlike a cat whose instinct is to kill prey even if not hungry -- Steven, as sick as he may be with the flu, would still manage (with a smile on his face) to prepare and serve to his family and his many friends a drop-dead delicious meal using whatever game he killed just hours earlier. (I refer to Steven as being almost domesticated because as much as he loves to be in the wild and to hunt, as is his passion, yet another part of his life has allowed him to love and marry an understanding wife and to be the father of three kids -- all of whom he hopes one day will grow up and love to hunt the way he has done and like his father before him.) While I am fortunate to have many good friends, I do envy those who are his friends. They are better as persons and fortunate because he is in their lives.

Scott Brobeck yeah I’m stoked for more hunters afield. There’s too many tags, we need them filled. There aren’t enough roads for access for these activities, so let’s punch more roads in the woods. We need to keep turning the resource into a commodity to be exploited. It’s good for all of us!

I'm a 3rd year studying Environmental Policy Analysis and Planning with a Conservation Tract at UC Davis, and I am in love with waterfowling in the Sacramento River Basin. You DO NOT need all that hand movement to make all the meat calls you'll ever need to land birds. In fact your calling isnt even close to the top of the list of things that put birds on the ground. Hide, hide, hide are the first 3. Then your setup and spread and wind direction. Calling is maybe #5 or 6 out of a list of 10 things you need to kill geese. Lol

Awesome! I found goose breast in my freezer - I thought I was out! - so pastrami is in my future. Made hearts and gizzards just last week, though the biscuits and gravy look like a better use for the gizzards. I basically made the gizzards into skewers, along with the hearts. Turned out a little chewy, though the hearts were perfect. 4 more months until the September season!

Love Canada goose hunting. To make a great appetizer that I can’t keep on a plate long enough to reach the table, breast them out, rinse in cold water. Then cut into chunks, wrap in bacon, toothpick them, grill them to medium rare. They are cooked perfect when the bacon is crispy. Phenomenal appetizer. You get just enough of that wild game flavor cut with the flavor of bacon. People with think it’s beef

Never even thought about trying to clean up goose gizzards....after seeing how much meat you got off those 2? Gonna re-think that. Really no idea how to clean them up, but trial and error is often my way of learning anyway! Might start with ducks...though a bit afraid of their diet making things less....tasty. Legs? For Super Bowl I often take all my duck and goose legs and drop them in a crock pot with BBQ sauce, peppers, onions, and garlic...few hours later, one amazing half-time meal!
