Grizzly Bear Charge in Jasper

While mountain biking in Jasper, Alberta on August 4, 2013, my cousin Dan and I were charged by a grizzly sow three times.
We were riding single track just outside of Jasper town-site (9c) when the encounter occurred. I rode to the top of a hill and applied the brakes to wait for Dan and plan my descent. My brakes squealed a bit, then I heard a growl and looked to my right to see a grizzly bear charging at me.
After careening down the hill a bit on my bike, I was able to distance myself from the bear. According to Dan, who was subsequently charged, the sow stopped on the trail where I had been standing.
When Dan arrived on the scene, he created a distraction, which drew the bear to him. He managed to grab the bear spray from his bag in time to brace himself, but the bear stopped approximately 10 meters from him - just outside the spray's effective range. Frankly, I'm glad we didn't have to injure the mother in any way.
Meanwhile, I worked my way along the bottom of the gully toward Dan so that I wasn't alone in the rough bush. As I reached him, the sow and her cub charged toward us slightly once more before heading away in the direction that we had come from.
We waited a few minutes, then walked away from the scene along the trail with bear spray in hand.

When traveling in bear country always wear little bells that jingle which alerts the bear that you are in the area. Also, carry pepper spray to spray them if they get too close. For preventative measures, watch for signs of bears in the area, like tracks and bear poop. The tracks should be obvious when you see them but the bear poop can be harder to identify. You can tell when it is bear poop because it will have little bells in it and it will smell like pepper.

This is an amazing video. Glad all turned out well for the humans and bears. One thing I always do while biking in bear country (AK) is to yell every 30 or so seconds at the top of my lungs. It's annoying and tiresome but it does the trick and gives bears an opportunity to move out of the way before you rush onto the scene on your bike. I've done this in one of the most bear-dense parts of AK on 25+ miles of backpacker's trail and all I saw were two bears from a distance (one brown bear running up a hill away from our yelling as we came on the scene). Other than that we counted somewhere around 55-ish piles of bear scat on the trail...just to show how active the area was!
@davidlrogers
@davidlrogers 9 лет назад
Yeah, when we hike we carry cowbells and try to be loud, especially when you're coming around corners or over a ridge top. Most bear attacks are because you've startled them and they feel cornered.

When my other half and I were on a retreat a couple years back, on a hike up to Inspiration Point, one of our fellow hikers had a seizure. There were for of us in the group, I was the only one who could go for help. I sang VERY LOUDLY all the way down the mountain... Right at the bottom, right in the middle of the two, was a... DEER! LOL I was so expecting bear or mountain lion I actually was SCARED! I hollered and hosted- the deer didn't move, so I the a small rock, he ran off, and I was able to get help for my friend. My point is, I'm happy to see I did the right thing- I'd only just been told to make lots of noise to keep the big critters away. Didn't know if it was true or not. 😊

Many years ago, I was camping across the western part of Canada with my family. We stayed in a beautiful campground in the Selkirk Mountains, called Illicillowit, if I remember correctly. They had a great educational program with a lot of young park naturalists. We attended a lot of nature talks in the amphitheater, as well as going on a lot of hikes with the naturalists. The day before we left camp, Barbara Chapman presented a program on wildlife in the area, and had the pelt of what she said was about a 600 pound grizzly that had been hit by a car. She was off the next day, and we said our goodbyes, as she would be out hiking with her boyfriend. The next day we went on to Banff. We later picked up a newspaper, only to read that she had been killed on that hike, by a mother grizzly. It's no joke. They are death on 4 padded feet. Take every precaution when you are out there.

Years ago my friend Mike and I were traveling by car through Jasper and spent the night in my old Volvo between two hotels. We thought we could maybe use the pool to clean up in the morning. So we were all in our bags and Mike says he has to take a leak. So he goes out in the dark to this little piece of woods between the two hotels and in 30 seconds comes dashing back into the car saying "There's something BIG out there!" We turn on the car lights to see the biggest damn grizzly standing right at the end of our car looking pretty pissed off. Mike had stated to take a leak when he felt and heard a "Whooof" of hot air. Apparently he pissed on the bear or came extremely close to doing that. You know he was close if he felt the air on his face! Mike yells "DRIVE!!! so I immediately start the car with my feet still in the sleeping bag and we drive to a movie theater parking lot with lots of light. True story

@@katana5562 Bears won't attack humans unless you surprise them or they are sows (females) traveling with cubs. Most bears are very timid and human fatalities by them are extremely rare. Brown bears are much more aggressive than black bears. Usually when hiking in a dense forest area, it helps making a lot of noise to avoid bear encounters. Sometimes they don't even want to attack people, but are just naturally curious. It really depends on the situation.

I find it hilarious people are bringing up guns when 1) a bear that close would make it near impossible to actually get the gun out before it got to you and b) this is jasper canada people, a national park. It's illegal to have anything along the lines of firearms in the area and there's hefty fines for killing animals in national parks
@MegaDanbo

If you work in rural Alaska or Canada (hunting guide, surveyor etc) and you often have to walk into thick underbrush(where bears sleep) pretty much the only effective way to defend yourself is a powerful rifle of shotgun loaded and in your hands at all times. Not that I'm recommending people go walking into Alaskan underbrush.
@EricCris10sen
@EricCris10sen 9 лет назад
Fleece Johnson Actually the most powerful thing you can do while walking around in Alaska is to MAKE NOISE. I live and work in Alaska. Every week I go walking in the tundra and the taiga where yes, there are PLENTY of grizzly bears. If you don't want a grizzly bear to get startled and run up on you, then you make noise. The worse thing you can do is try to shoot a bear with an under powered rifle.
@semtech30
@semtech30 9 лет назад
Well I feel a National Park, Governed and policed by our Government is in neglect and liable for inviting the general public to visit such a site knowing very well about the occupation and potential of dangerous animals that are out there. Encounters with these creatures, intentional or not, that result in injury or death should not be approached without life saving appliances. I have the right to live. The right to defend from threat of aggression causing death. The Human species has inherited the earth. Our ability to survive is to use our superior intelligence. Timothy Treadwell FAILED in his attempt to prove that we can co-exist with these Bears. He couldn't sort out the difference between Reason and Instinct. An Animal has no reasoning ability. Thus I charge him with suicidal tendencies and the 2nd degree murder of his partner.
@EricCris10sen
@EricCris10sen 9 лет назад
semtech30 No one is forcing you to go out there in the back country and see these animals up close. You want to look at them from safety? Go to a zoo. NP's are there to PROTECT the wildlife, wilderness, and whatever historical artifacts that are in the area. There are plenty of open land out there where you can fire a weapon in "defense". But don't give me that BULLSHIT. In Denali National Park where I worked, some fucking asshole who brought a gun into the park (fine that's legal) but he went there and was supposedly "CHARGED" by a moose, so he shot and seriously injured the animal. Didn't even have the heart to kill it. So it suffered and had to be killed by our rangers. Well guess what? That moose was a rare breed of moose, it was a WHITE/ALBINO moose which is sacred to the alaskans, then to make it worse, the moose had 2 calves with her, which probably didn't survive on their own. That person could have zig zagged and ran behind a tree. They don't want to kill you or eat you, they want you to leave them alone, which people DON'T DO. So no, I don't think people have the right to "defend" themselves from animals in these parks. If you're scared something will attack you, GO ELSEWHERE. Or hell, just stay in your vehicle. People NEED places like these to learn about the past or to just get away from the large cities and into nature. And if you go around getting scared and shooting animals, then wtf are we there for? And our superior intelligence? Our superior intelligence is what's destroying this world. Humans have inherited this planet and is hell bent on destroying what we have.

I think the depiction in the Revenant was really well done. You got the sense that the sow was merely protecting her cubs and was only trying to ensure that the threat had been neutralized. You also could sense how helpless Glass was in that situation. Makes me even more thankful that things turned out they way they did for me.

I live in bear country, and bear spray actually works better as professional hunters would tell an amateur to use instead of a gun. Because unless you are an expert guns man, you are just going to piss a bear off. It takes 5-6 shots to put a grizzly down. After one shot the bear would already be on top of you raging mad. Seriously, read the forums from hunters in Alaska. Bear spray shoots 30 feet and stops a bear in it's tracks.

You are correct with this comment. Lets suppose it followed through with it's intent. Those two harmless Boys would have some serious damage done to them if not fatal. The sad part is that the cubs learn form it. There were 2 of them. More trouble to come. Bears often have twins.......do the math. We are getting to many of them and are becoming a problem as we see here.
@Onlyrealmusic4life
@Onlyrealmusic4life 9 лет назад
semtech30 Are they really though? This is where they live and these men were riding bikes right through there. I don't think I would say they were in the wrong if the men got killed. But if there is actual statistical data supporting that they are becoming overpopulated, then I guess you are right.
@semtech30
@semtech30 9 лет назад
Onlyrealmusic4life Facts. Jasper park is in Alberta along side the boarder of British Columbia. "This video" is in the Rocky Mountain range. Estimate 25,000 Grizzly bears in Canada in which 14 to 16,000 reside in B.C.alone. The Latin term is Ursus arctos horribilis....meaning "bear horrible" That's a fact. We share their environment and control their populations. We have to, because of this. There is no shortage despite the Save the Bear campaign's ongoing. This is political posturing by the naturalist onlookers totally deceived. Google ( bearsinbc.com.) for an understanding in the matter. There is no argument. Idle onlookers are do nothing people. These animals must be kept in check for their own well being. Nothing can have free reign on our environment. We do not deserve to die at the hand of an animals uncontrolled instincts. They do not reason.
@Onlyrealmusic4life
@Onlyrealmusic4life 9 лет назад
semtech30 I heard it is illegal to carry firearms in this area. Why is that? It seems like these men are pretty far from civilization or anyone that could save them if they were attacked….Are guns only allowed during hunting seasons? I'm not much of a gun or hunter myself so I don't know much about this You from Canada? That's cool. I had only heard of a black bear overpopulation in Canada, I didn't know grizzlies were a problem now too. I think sometimes people get too attached to animal rights. Of course we are more complex thinkers, but that can sometimes lead to us getting killed, because like you said "they do not reason".
@semtech30
@semtech30 9 лет назад
Onlyrealmusic4life National parks and Provincial parks are Ranked at different management levels. Some are restricted and some are not. Jasper is protected and only special issue permits for hunting may be allowed to control populations. Then animal rights people call it trophy hunting. Well call it what you want , it is a cull in the name of Wildlife Management. These mountain bikers would not be far from the main gate which means those Bears should not be this low on the mountain range. Bears are not a herd animal therefore they get pressured to find new territory by Bigger Bears. If not managed they end up on the Hwy getting hit by Freight Trucks anyhow. Even hunters get killed by these Bugger's. Totally unpredictable. I don't go where I cannot be armed. British Columbia is all mountains from the West Coast range to the Rockies. All of it is forested and people live mainly in the Valley's. More Wildlife are killed by vehicle contact than Hunting. Really pissed me off when they pick on Hunters.

News flash. Law enforcement and military personnel are not the only people who are of good moral character and are fully competent with firearms.

The dogs were kind of startled, but they stayed quiet and I immediately turned and led them away as fast as I could go. I still wonder how close the mother was. Probably not far, but the few bears around the area where our cabin is are basically domesticated. There are multiple restaurants that feed them every night as kind of a show. It is still scary to see one in the woods, knowing they could just tear you apart if they felt like it. I would crap my pants if a grizzly charged me...
