The iconic National Historic Landmark once again sits proudly, high atop a newly fortified bluff overlooking the seemingly endless Atlantic Ocean... always ready to guide ships and boaters home from wherever their voyage has taken them or greet those arriving from distant shores, any time, day or night, rain or shine, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year (no breaks)!!!
The unprecedented $42 Million Restoration project at the Montauk Point Lighthouse was recently completed after nearly three (3) years, and has returned this magnanimous symbol of Long Island's history to all it's former glory and beauty with meticulous care and attention to EVERY DETAIL!
The tower dome and walkways were taken down to bare metal, primed and repainted to EXACTING tolerances. The entire tower, each and every block and mortar gap was stripped of all the old paint in a difficult multi-stage process. Every bit of mortar between tower blocks were chiseled and replaced, and along the way every stone block re-pointed by hand or replaced with the exact same type of sandstone brought in from a quarry as rocks, then shaped by hand to blocks to precisely fit each specific location.
Inside the tower, new HVAC, sophisticated cloud -based environmental monitoring systems and data networks to link everything together now help prevent deterioration of the tower from the inside out by carefully controlling moisture throughout the structure (even enclosed spaces).
On the outside, the new paint job has returned a touch of sparkle and splendor that friends and fans of the Montauk Point Lighthouse have missed for some time.
The tower is now TRULY a SPECTACULAR SIGHT TO BEHOLD!
