Just to understand better. The argument is that it's not only mulm but a mixture with organic waste that would produce nitrates. The monte carlo catches everything that is flowing in the water.

Considering people are still using this stuff years later and it's still popular, this didn't age so well...

Is there a better carpet plant to start with im going to start a new 20 gallon long?
@anoxicfiltrationplenums

The video was only made to show people that you have to keep up with carpet plants getting all the detritus and fish waste out of them. In fact there are several RU-vid videos showing the same thing as I do in my particular video so I guess it's nothing new.

What an interesting video! So well explain. Thank you very much for sharing. Rgds.from Argentina.

Can we just put a custom 3D printed tray (gravel filter) under that monte carlo? So, a tube going to suck that gunk only for the water change. The rest of the time, it's not moving. It seem that a good proportion of that biowaste/NO3 soup can then be collected on your next water change isn't? Of course, if we run it 24/7, it will just build up NO3 in the tank.

That sounds like a good idea.

Thanks doc, i had a Montecarlo tank. Its a pain to maintain. It became 4" thick and the plants below will melt due to deprivation of light. One fine day I found entire carpet lifted from substrate. After that never ever tried catpet plants. Thanks for ur educational video. It means so much to us.

Nitrification is carried out according to the following reactions: 2 NH3 + 3O2 - > 2 NO2 + 2 H+ + 2 H2O 2 NO2- + O2 -> 2 NO3- Plants absorb ammonium and nitrate during the assimilation process, after which they are converted into nitrogen-containing organic molecules, such as amino acids and DNA.

Been growing both plants for years. I have never had any issues with nitrates building up. In fact in some of my tanks I have had to add KNO3.

Ammonia/ammonium not nitrates is the preferred fertilizer for plants. Plants will use nitrates only when ammonia is almost depleted out of the water column/system. Taking in nitrates is work for a plant. Plants must convert it back to nitrites and then back to ammonia in a two step process in order for them to use it. This can only be done during photosynthesis. When photosynthesis stops so does the plant stop taking in Nitrates. However, ammonia/ammonium is always taken in as a food for plant night and day. Because it’s easy for the plant to make it’s proteins and amino acids out of it not DNA that is made by cells because Deoxyribonucleic acid, is a self-replicating material which is present in nearly all living organisms as the main constituent of chromosomes. It is the carrier of genetic information.

You said your nitrates went up when you disturbed it .so dose that mean if you don't disturb it its not a problem?

Excellent video Dr Novak, I'm convinced of the plenum concept. May I ask the layers of substrate you use with this method please?

The question I pondered is: What then happens to the Nitrogen Gas after the anoxic bacteria convert the more complex Nitrates (and phosphates) into Nitrogen Gas?

N2, that is the gas that gets expelled into the atmosphere. Nitrogen is 78% of the air we breath.

@@anoxicfiltrationplenums Why do we not see the nitrogen gas off gassing from the Anoxic Filtration baskets? (Similiar to the way Oxygen pearls on aquatic plants.)

i gave up on Monte carlo... my cheap DIY LED system cant penetrate deep enough.... but its great for growing riccia, duckweed.. subwassertang is slow.. but is growing... but i can see the monte carlo dirty issues... coz i did another carpeting plant and the detritus is obvious... ... and i had a detritus worm problem. but that has gone down by itself. after the plants grew to 1 inch that is thank god, it wasnt planaria... i'm considering adding trumpet snails to churn up my substrate

Monte Carlo is a great carpeting plant. I have it in my aquarium with NO ISSUES whatsoever. This plant isn’t meant to be grown in large unmaintained bushels. Keeping it trim and having shrimp or other grazers around to clean the plant avoid this issue altogether. It seems as though he created an issue, just to have something to rant about. I don’t care how educated he is on aquariums, fauna or plants, he obviously lacks common sense. Which completely makes his education on the topic null.

Thank you. Was about to order some as well. Can you provide a video dedicated to plants (or aquascape in general) compatible with Discus & their water temps? You seem to have a nice variety. Thanks again for being instrumental in getting my aquarium up and running.

Totally agree but don’t santanize the Montecarlo or carpeting plant in general, all the junk that is collected inside the gravel can be easily removed with a gravel vacuum schedule. Don’t let all The job to the filters 🤷‍♂️

Agreed. He’s poisoning people’s minds with these videos going on and on about Monte Carlo, and neglects to tell his subscribers that it was indeed HIS mistakes that brought on these issues and not the plant. And it’s sad because he’s obviously educated on this topic, so he’s leading people astray. His maintenance, or lack thereof, of this plant is what caused his issues. Not the plant itself.

This guy is so smart that he’s dumb. I hate to say it, but he’s going on and on about a problem HE CREATED, not the Monte Carlo itself.
