Italians mostly fought on allied side in that battle...
@fuzzydunlop7928
@fuzzydunlop7928 4 года назад
@@eliogabbalo0965 The ENR were more on the Anzio beachhead side of the battle. (historian Roger Cirillo actually had a family member die fighting on the Fascist side in that battle) That said, I appreciate the mention of Italians fighting on both sides within their own country because like so many realities of the Italian campaign that go overlooked too often if you ask me. The RSI was a total rump state, but it still fielded like 200,000 men and was winning battles in Northern Italy into 1945. As the Allied war effort pivoted to the Pacific and to NW Europe, the Italians increasingly shouldered the fighting (not to mention the Brazilians who... honestly could be counted as more Italians if you know anything about Italians in Brazil) and once you had committed Fascists and fellow-travelers who wanted to fight on one side, and on the other side committed and experienced paisonos like the Folgore jumping at the bit to oust the Germans and redeem themselves for North Africa - things became very messy. Once all the little Luigis conscripted to fight went home or worked behind the lines as support troops in Italy and France, the combat performance of individual Italian units on both sides went up dramatically. Not to mention the various bandits and partisans in the mix. All this is forgotten, so even if there weren’t Italians at Monte Cassino other than the old nonplussed, barefoot goatherder disinterestedly watching the carnage as he tends to his flock (maybe there were, I haven’t heard anything about it but the Germans love to take credit for things and the Allies tended to downplay the Italian contributions for a whole mess of reasons so there might’ve been for all we know) I still appreciate the off-hand mention.

Fun fact: My Nona's(Italian for grandmother) village of Coreno Ausonio was 96% destroyed by the fighting for Monte Casino. She fled into the mountains above her village and hid there with her family until she and her family was taken by the Wehrmacht behind their lines. I never have got the full story from her but I really want to make a documentary of her first hand experience of the events. Shes still alive in her mid 80's I believe. I visited the town, in which my grandmother still owns a house in. And its fucking surreal. There are STILL bombed out houses that haven't been torn down or replaced. As if the city never really recovered. I know this will get lost in the comments, but its a cool version of history that you dont hear a lot: The civilians side of it.

Without this battle I wouldn't exist! My grandpa got transferred from the Soviet Union to defend Monte Cassino (and thus propably saving his life); after that he was lucky enough having fight and (and then getting captured) at the western front. He originally was from East-Prussia, so he was pretty lucky to escape the red horde and after that East Germany, only to meet my grandma not far from his POW camp :D

Love your stuff. Cassino was a damn mess and Clark deserves his own video. I'm Japanese-American and Clark is a very divisive figure in the community for his treatment/use of the 100th Infantry Battalion (Separate) and later the 100/442 Regimental Combat Team. The 100th fought in the first battle and took heavy casualties. Like one platoon had 5 men remaining out of 40 casualties. They took objectives but could not hold as other attacks faltered. I know you tend to make "bigger picture" videos, but I'd love to see your take on the Japanese-American units of WWII. Keep up the good work and Go For Broke!

12:58 I salute you for using Czerwone maki pod Monte Cassino song, If anyone is interested in the lyrics there ya go. Czy widzisz te gruzy na szczycie? Tam wróg twój się kryje jak szczur. Musicie, musicie, musicie Za kark wziąć i strącić go z chmur. Przejdą lata i wieki przeminą, Pozostaną ślady dawnych dni I wszystkie maki na Monte Cassino Czerwieńsze będą, bo z polskiej wzrosły krwi. 2. Runęli przez ogień straceńcy, Niejeden z nich dostał i padł, Jak ci z Samosierry szaleńcy, Jak ci spod Racławic sprzed lat. Runęli impetem szalonym I doszli. I udał się szturm. I sztandar swój biało-czerwony Zatknęli na gruzach wśród chmur. Refren: Czerwone maki... 3. Czy widzisz ten rząd białych krzyży? To Polak z honorem brał ślub. Idź naprzód, im dalej, im wyżej, Tym więcej ich znajdziesz u stóp. Ta ziemia do Polski należy, Choć Polska daleko jest stąd, Bo wolność krzyżami się mierzy, Historia ten jeden ma błąd . My rough translation of that above would be : Do you see that debris at the top? Over there, your foe is hiding like a rat You must, You must, You must Grab him by the neck and cast him down from the clouds And they went reckless and fierce And they went to kill and to get revenge And they went like always unyielding Like always to fight for honor. Red poppies at Monte Cassino Instead of dew, were drinking Polish blood Through these poppies soldier walked and perished But stronger than death was his wrath Years go by and centuries pass The traces of old days will last And all the poppies at Monte Cassino Will be redder because they grown out drinking polish blood. They charged through fire, doomed Many got shot and died Like those reckless of Samosierra Like those at Racławice, centuries before They charged with force of madness And made it. The assault was a success And their white and red banner Was raised on the rubble among the clouds Red poppies... Can you see this row of white crosses? There Pole swore an oath to honor, Go forward, the farther, the higher The more of them you'll find at your feet This ground belongs to Poles, Although, Poland is far away from here Because freedom, by crosses, is measured This is history's, one mistake Red poppies...
@iatsd

see, and this is why it is absolutely vital that everyone donate vowels as soon as possible. Poland is suffering a severe shortage of vowels. Can't you give just one vowel a day to a needy Polish poet, historian, or child?
@boryskarton7729
@boryskarton7729 4 года назад
@@iatsd I know it's a joke but I wanna explain. Actually Polish have more vowels than it seems. vowels are: a, ą, e, ę, i, o, u ,y. y is always vowel, i sometimes is not. There are diphtongs in Polish that are often used. Those are sz, cz, rz, dz, dż, dź, si, ci, dzi, zi (Note, i with those is sometimes vowel and sometimes not, depends if theres vowel after it). That makes that it seems there are more sounds in words than actually are. For example. in first line of lyrics in Polish: 9 vowel sounds out of total 23 sounds vs translation: 9 vowel sounds out of 21 total. Additionaly in English there are diphtongs like ee, oo etc. Which makes it seems it has more vowels.

"We're the D-Day Dodgers out in Italy Always on the vino, always on the spree. Eighth Army scroungers and their tanks We live in Rome - among the Yanks. We are the D-Day Dodgers, over here in Italy. We landed at Salerno, a holiday with pay, Jerry brought the band down to cheer us on our way Showed us the sights and gave us tea, We all sang songs, the beer was free. We are the D-Day Dodgers, way out in Italy. The Volturno and Cassino were taken in our stride. We didn't have to fight there. We just went for the ride. Anzio and Sangro were all forlorn. We did not do a thing from dusk to dawn. For we are the D-Day Dodgers, over here in Italy. On our way to Florence we had a lovely time. We ran a bus to Rimini right through the Gothic Line. On to Bologna we did go. Then we went bathing in the Po. For we are the D-Day Dodgers, over here in Italy. Once we had a blue light that we were going home Back to dear old Blighty, never more to roam. Then somebody said in France you'll fight. We said never mind, we'll just sit tight, The windy D-Day Dodgers, out in Sunny Italy. Now Lady Astor, get a load of this. Don't stand up on a platform and talk a load of piss. You're the nation's sweetheart, the nation's pride We think your mouth's too bloody wide. We are the D-Day Dodgers, in Sunny Italy. When you look 'round the mountains, through the mud and rain You'll find the crosses, some which bear no name. Heartbreak, and toil and suffering gone The boys beneath them slumber on They were the D-Day Dodgers, who'll stay in Italy. So listen all you people, over land and foam Even though we've parted, our hearts are close to home. When we return we hope you'll say 'You did your little bit, though far away All of the D-Day Dodgers, way out there in Italy.'" -The Ballad of the D-Day Dodgers, 1944
