I have a feeling that the present govt will wait for another five years for the manufacturing in critical and high tech areas to take strong roots and then start reducing custom duties. We have to ensure that we do not get swamped by those imports which will not allow our manufacturing to take roots. PLI is succeeding and we should push it strongly for another ten years.

During his time India surrendered to the IMF and a stagnant growth for decades during which time China went up and up by not listening to the IMF. Most of our assets were privatized and given to the people who took most of the money to Britain to purchase palaces. If they invested in India they founded private universities charging a fortune for the students. When we have started in 1991, our per head income was just the same as that of China; today for China the per head income is 6 to 7 times that of India. China has not privatized anything but decentralized the power by constructing Town and Municipal Industries. These Western oriented economists ruined us by suggesting the IMF style policy. They are just slaves.

Progress & Development is an eternal process. No country has reached a level where all people are satisfied & said 'that's it' & we want no more. That is why govts keep getting booted out. But India's performance has been excellent esp. during & post covid.

Very good discussion, He is very smart but many of things for faster growth of the country are known. It is very easy to say but very hard to implement. Media /Shobha must ask him about Congress's socialism model. Is giving 1 lakh to all poor people to remove poverty, as stated in Congress's political manifesto, economically viable? What about MSP, Rahul Gandhi's Gabbar Singh Tax comments, and the farmer bill? People need to know which policies are beneficial for the country. Politicians exploit people's illiteracy and backwardness. Who will vote for the country's future and growth when they have the option to receive 1 lakh every year? People will choose their own interest. It is the media's job to bring in economists and question political parties about their economic policies to educate voters which policies are good for the country. Ensure political parties not allowed to buy votes. In democracy votes are not on sale, Supreme court should put ban on buying votes on wrong promises or bias policies.

My take - China grew because they could implement the economic reforms ruthlessly and the human apathy during the process was unimaginable. Can we replicate the same in India? As an open society we just can't do it. In a democratic society with such a huge population, the economic growth should be in a way that it does not hamper people's freedom. We, the India, is placed in a very peculiar situation.

Who is this lady to say she supports Welfarism.

Poverty should be linked to a timeline..and it should be multidimensional...besides monetary income...it should be linked to amenities including health care that people have assess to..Recall a story about a place in china ..which was declared free from "absolute poverty"..where it later reported that the people there had to travel 6 kilometers to get pipe water..The point is....poverty elimination should be seen from a multidimensional perspective...so that comparison could be credibly made between different time periods in a realistic manner ..

At least, better sense prevails in one of the economic stalwarts of UPA regime.

Regarding 800 million household getting free ration. As in all welfare measures it is easy to get in but hard to get out but this case is different. There is vulnerability of a household which is out of poverty can go back if the earning member loses his job or somebody in his family falls seriously sick/ill. PM Modi has explained this rationale of vulnerability but of course you will not mention it! That is why ration & PMJAY is a safety net!
