Also a tip as well: when you present or guide your child in an activity, the LESS you say the better. When adults chat too much it distracts from the child's concentration 🙂

This is a great video full of wonderful ideas. I am going to make these things for my grandchildren. One thing that keeps coming up in my mind is safety, Many of the things I have seen could be chocking hazards. How do you handle your child working independently with such things? How do you handle toys that could especially dangerous for Mia? Do you keep certain activities away so she can;t get into them and only do them with Kylie? Thank you for this very helpful video!

When I was 2 or 3, my mom said I would get my grandpas pieces of scrap wood, put them in a circle and play with them like dolls. When I was older [9ish] I drew faces and names on all of the jenga blocks 😂 my family wasnt montessori, but I think it's a natural thing for kids to want to do to play with the simplest of pieces and create a whole other world.

Something I've never understood is...people keep saying wooden toys etc are better because they last longer. This doesn't make sense to me. I bought a bunch of good quality wooden toys and they have been pretty much destroyed even tho my child is not too harsh with them. Paint comes off, teeth leave indentations, and throwing scratches them. I still like plastic more even if this isn't a popular opinion. Montessory "branded" stuff are also so expensive. 99 euros for the 5 mobiles you only use for three months. Your tips are very useful. Thanks.

My daughter just turned 2 and is constantly making messes every time I turn my back. She also is putting a lot of things in her mouth. Any water bottle she finds, she pours it all out. Earlier she got into a d.i.y. face scrub I made( just coconut oil and salt) she had tasted it and had rubbed it all over her hands. I've been a little panicky not knowing how to solve this issue. I think I've neglected her sense of play and exploration. You have inspired me to make her some activities and games! That way she doesn't make her own!!! Lol thank you!

I have a question that might be worth a video when it comes to adults talking to children in Montessori. I have an 8month-old and he is learning so much right now: opening and closing flaps; pulling zippers; taking things in and out; etc. I have read so many times how important it is to give language to babies and narrate what they’re doing. I want to help him understand what’s happening by saying things like, “you’ve opened the flap,” or “you knocked the blocks over.” But I also want him to be able to concentrate. He has times to play independently but I like narrating when we play together. Where does the Montessori philosophy fall on this?

@Kgaubatz
@Kgaubatz 4 года назад
I did the shakers with washed pill bottles (I removed labels and goo, since he would immediately put them in his mouth). This way the bottles could not be opened. We used bells, buttons, rice etc. It was a favorite around 10 mths.

Thank you so much for this! I love how informative, comprehensive and to the point your videos are! I have so many questions but basically I want to know how can you tell if a child is not ready for an activity? My son is 23 months old and we have tried several transferring activities (both dry and wet) but though he starts super excited and eager, he understands what he is supposed to do and is able to do it, he always gives up after 2 goes and ends up throwing the beans around or splashing in the water. So I wonder is it too easy for him? Too hard? Does he have a concentration issue or does he just want to have fun? Should I let him do it or should I stop him because it’s considered inappropriate use of the materials? Practical life activities are his favorite but he is always very impatient.

Great video, lovely activities, thank you. Behavioral questions: how do you support prolonged focus? What if they start the activity and then (once they 'get it') want to move on to something else before they have completed it? Do you let them or try to encourage them to finish? What phrasing do you use as they're working if they are doing it wrong or if they finish it incorrectly? I'd like my 2yo to work on these skills but don't want to be pushy or forceful about it. Thanks!
@kellyreese2718
@kellyreese2718 4 года назад
Carly Gates you let them move on. They guide the activities and of it doesn’t engage them, you figure out why and adjust your expectations or presentation.
@kellyreese2718
@kellyreese2718 4 года назад
Also, you show them the first time, and they may do it their own way and that is ok. Look at what is “incorrect” and why is it incorrect. You may need to adjust the activity or let them practice more independently.

Pls show the child how to manipulate each activity first, specially crayons and lock/key and painting ones, It should be shown holding the objects with the correct 3 fingers ( thumb, pointer and middle fingers)so they will prepare the hand to hold a crayon then a pencil and after pen without holding it wrongfully. It does not matter which hand the use they can for sure use right, left or both, but one at a time. The reason for starting with one color for painting is so the learn what are the primary colors then they will learn how to combine the colors .

Aren't those lids a chocking hazard? The beans as well? Are these activities supposed to be 100% supervised? Is it still learning&play if you have to watch them like a hawk and intervene every time they try to put something into their mouths? What do you do if on a first try your toddler throws the rice all over the room for 5 minutes and then moves on to another activity? Asking for a friend ;)
@abmrose
@abmrose 4 года назад
fuzzfriendly Those caps from baby food pouches are designed to be large enough not to fit in a young child’s windpipe, and have all those openings so that even if they were to get lodged in the child’s mouth, he/she would be able to breathe until an adult helped them take it out of their mouth. It’s ok if your child isn’t ready to sit still and play in rice yet. 🙂 Most toddlers and young children love to- even have an irresistible urge to make a mess. I find it helpful for both my daughter’s and my own sanity if I set up a mess making activity that I’m ok with cleaning up. Then she gets to engage in age appropriate activities and I don’t lose my patience when I find “surprise” messes in my makeup, kitchen, etc.

Hi I am a new parent and introducing Montessori to 7 month old currently. I am taking it slowly and learning with my kiddo as this is completely new to me as well. I had a concern on how to do the activities with young babies though. I know you have done videos in how to present activities but my baby is 7 month and not really crawling yet. She sits up and reaches for toys but most of the time it’s like she needs assistance. So i was wondering how to do shelf activities with them. Normally I have her sit infront of the shelf and ask her what she wants to play with and then whichever activity she seems interested in, I pull that tray down and let her play. After what it seems like she is done, i will then ask her if she was done and then I model putting the stuff back up. Do you think I am doing correctly? Also what to do if she shows interest in multiple activities and wants to touch everything. Do i bring those tray down as well or do I ask her to play with one activity first. I would really appreciate your help. Thank you so so much. I love your channel and have learnt so much from watching you and implementing your tips

An old plastic cup and straw (like from a trip to get iced coffee) also makes a great free toddler activity. Or you can recycle a coffee or oatmeal canister- especially if you have multiple lids. You can do smaller holes for something like straws or cake pop sticks, a slit to make a "coin box" (using old cardboard boxes to make "coins"), or larger holes for pom-poms. You could even make "shape sorter lids." (And with using one container with multiple lids, you can easily swap out the activities without worrying about taking up too much space.) You can also take the spout from the baby food pouches and make a cap twist-off board. Depending on the child, this could easily become a color-matching activity. You could also arrange it to work on another skill- like counting, letter recognition, or more. (I've even seen people make little 3-pouch-lid cards for work on cvc words). And you can also use paint chips and clothes-pins to do a color matching activity. Whether it's a simple one like matching pink to pink and blue to blue OR a more advanced one where you're using the paint strips and the child has to discern between lighter and darker shades. Same concept as the color box activities listed here, but with the added element of fine motor work.

Quick question I just thought of: Does Montessori involve any aspects of learning gender? Either learning traditional gender or learning fluid expression?

Hi Ashley! Thank you again for sharing your studies... I'm trying to keep up. Lol. But baby girl is doing well. Question we still have our crib but I want her to have her floor bed. But she also is at the point of climbing over her room gate. We needed it bc we didn't want our dog to get to her toys, yet also we need to get a proper gate for our stairs. The way our house is built the top stairs (split stairway) Don't allow for the gate to go across. Like does anyone have a suggestion out there? But what do you suggest? She is so active and I love it! I gues

What do you do the rest of the day? These activities at most will keep my 21 month busy for 5 mins each. That still leaves hours of the day where they are bored lol! They will get bored of doing things in the kitchen with me too. We are a screen free house, and still my child is bored quickly. When they see other kids with toys they beg and beg for toys 🙈 we have lots of animal toys and books, but I don’t think very kid can tolerate repetition as much.

I’ve been struggling with this too! Even going outside an hour and a half every morning as part of her routine leaves a long time! Im trying to teach her how to “clean” and “cook” with me to help me out

My child is almost 3 and I’m feeling a lot of mom guilt for not knowing and exposing these activities to him but I’m about to get started…he knows his numbers, colors, shapes, days of the week, vehicles, animals, months, and alphabet, etc. but better believe we about to get on these! Thank you❤

For transferring activity, my 18 month old always ended up using his hands to transfer and even throwing dry beans on the floor. If redirecting him doesn’t work, should I stop him from doing this activity?

i think my 2 year old is a bit slow with development. She whacks everything , can't play with play dough, dosen't have the patience for anything. If she tries something out and it won't work she dumps it and move on. She gets really angry when I try and give her clues as to how things work. When I've made her (when she was younger) the post in box for pompons she ate them, when she learnt not to eat them she'd try to rip the box apart. When I give her chalk she tries to draw a little then smash it till it brakes to pieces. Stacking blocks, only to smash , shape sorting, yes and then smash. painting, brush thrown away, she has to use fingers!! I don't know what to do .

Hi, Ashley, great ideas, thanks! Sorry, I’m not sure if someone already asked this but do you remember what glitter glue you bought? I bought one that’s clumping a little and has such a narrow tip. Yours looks like it comes out wider and cleaner. Thanks!

Although my granddaughter will be two in about a month she still puts small objects in her mouth. I could never let her play with beans. Rice would be a good option. Thanks for all the great ideas as I am a Nonna taking care of her granddaughter 3 days a week. Such a joy!🥰

Tried pouring beans with my 22 month old. Dumping beans everywhere. Am I supposed to let that happen? I don’t understand when to tell him no. Am I supposed to say no? This is probably a very obvious question for most. He’s just always done what I ask until recently and I don’t know where or how to set boundaries.
