Ashley, your superpower is making Montessori accessible and relatable. To take all that theory from books, and show us what it looks like in practice in a family just like our own. Thank you for doing this and making us better parents, in turn. Loved this video - and the stock-images/cut-ins you've recently started including really look nice.. 👍

This brought back memories of my own childhood. One of the most precious times during my childhood was exploring outside which I thankfully was able to do a lot of. I grew up in Switzerland and almost all of the school excursion were into the Forest or the Mountains. During free time, I spent most of my time outdoors with children aged between 1 or 2 years old as the youngest until teens, although usually the eldest was only about 12 years old though sometimes younger. We all played together without direct adult supervision. I can imagine that the parents of the youngest ones (the toddlers / babies) would have been watching from their homes nearby or at least checking in every now and again. In some way, I feel that we had a similar approach to Montessori without actually calling it that. The amount of trust placed in us young children to look after one another and particularly the small ones means so much to me today. Back then, it was normal. We loved looking after the little ones and we were super careful with them. In turn, they loved playing with us. It was truly a wonderful time. Our teachers also instilled a lot of trust in us as children. Upon my return to Australia, things were very different both during my free time and at school. Children have less independence and less trust is given to them. I do understand that the countries are different. Switzerland is very safe on the whole as there is a strong sense of community and looking out for one another. Australia is vast and people live more apart.

And I must say. I appreciate nature so much and I always feel the need to go for walks and experience nature. It is a part of me. All of these things have a life long impact. I thank you so much for sharing the Montessori approach because it can be practised anywhere in the world and I really love that. In times where technology is prevailing, it is so refreshing and beautiful to learn about Montessori.

Great video. I love your suggestions without judgement approach. We collect “treasures” when we do a nature walk and then when we have impossible inclement weather, we do a scavenger hunt review in the basement. He loves “re-discovering” something that fascinated him previously. I also laminate fall leaves and we use those for Thanksgiving table place settings and decorations. This year we found rocks walking our neighborhood and are painting them instead of Easter Eggs and will put them in our garden boxes.

I always feel so much better when I make a point before to relax and let my child take the lead on walks. He is 4 and really into riding his scooter and I tell him he can choose whatever way he wants and I'll follow. We went on an afternoon and evening family walk yesterday and covered over 8 miles. There's no reason I need to be controlling the situation outside and we both end feeling satisfied and happy. Im a little more uptight in everyday life and outside is my favorite "yes" zone! It was a beautiful day yesterday and I set up a paint station outside and said go crazy.

Walks, hikes and geocaching are really lifesavers during this time of social-distancing and isolation wherein we all need to stay connected to the outdoors and have lots of stimulation in which we participate in an active manner. They can learn appropriate commands for the family dog, too, if they go on a walk or hike with you. They are going to have to go to school and work and other social obligations in all sorts of weather, so they may as well walk in it. We just know about different dangers from the ones our parents and grandparents knew. All of us know a kid can fall out of a tree and break a leg and we may be more aware of the dangers of head injuries on bicycles. But then grandma on the farm was more aware of getting lost and dying in a white-out blizzard where they had to string ropes from the farmhouse to the barn, so no one would die in the snow walking in circles. On the farm, they would have been more understanding of the dangers of animals who are intruded upon while eating or are of unknown temperament. If grandpa worked in a factory or on the docks, he was more aware of the potential deadly dangers of very cool looking large equipment of various kinds. Thank you.

We live in a typical suburb neighborhood, we go for walks at least 3 times a day and I love that my daughter who is 19 months always noticed things like flowers, bugs , shadows... she loves to run to catch the pigeons...she loves to point to thing for me to name. I take the stroller and walk behind her .. sometimes I have hard time getting her to stop when a car os around but I try to let he run free. I am definitely going to start taking a basket for collecting. Thanks Ashley for your informative videos!

Thank you for pointing out that their clothes should not prohibit them from exploring nature. My daughter's new, white dress became muddy after exploring a nearby creek. The natural elements were keeping her busy as I snapped some photos for her birthday. A few days of stain removing treatment and the mud is gone and my toddler has wonderful memories of playing in the mud, watching tadpoles, and throwing pebbles.

I'm proud when I know the name of the bird or flower we see 😅 Most of the time I forgot it till we are home to look at a book. But I will take your advice with taking a photo. We smell the flowers, look at their metamorphosis. In lack of the english names: the yellow Löwenzahn changes to the white Pusteblumen with the little umbrellas that fly away in the wind or when you blow at them. My daughter (almost 2) loves visiting our nearby construction zones, with their vehicles, the crane, process of building a house, pavement etc.

It's cool cause you can actually tell that you've done this with Kiley ( sorry if that's wrong, not sure if that's how you spell it) . She always says things like that, oh look maybe the sun went behind the clouds and that's why it's darker. It's so cool to see that she thinks about these things and it's obvious it's because you've put in the extra effort. My boy is two months younger than Mia now, and I do this when we walk our dog, he doesn't walk on his own yet, but in the carrier or the pram ill be telling him about the surroundings and we'll look at the birds and the. Clouds and the sun. Love your videos, Ive learnt so much from you! 💜

Love your videos! We try to walk with our 20 month old daughter daily, often we're out for 1.5 hours plus. Any tips for getting your child to go in one direction? Our little girl likes to double back the way we've come and zig zags all over the place, so it can take a long time to get anywhere at all. We're happy to take it slow with her and do a lot of what you mention naturally, but our nearest natural environment is a river walk and especially in the current circumstances, with many people getting their daily walk in the same space, we try and keep her moving in one direction. We'll encourage her to run (because she loves that), we'll sing nursery rhymes (because she loves to sing, dance and sign), we'll ask her to follow one of us, we'll try and entice her with something we see further ahead... Sometimes this becomes too difficult and we will put her in the pram for a break. I am just wondering if you or anyone else has some other tips or whether this is just expected at this age :-) Thanks for the vids x

For something organic (flowers, leaves, etc.) you can put them in a glass jar or vase and display them as a centrepiece on the dining room table. My son is 1 and he loved seeing the dandelions he picked on the table. Older children can also help arrange the flowers and water them. For inorganic matter, I keep it in a small bucket that can be accessed by my son and when the bucket is full I empty it. It's mostly rocks, and while he sometimes plays with them inside, he doesn't have an attachment to any one in particular. If he did favour one, I'd keep it longer.

To add on to something you said, I would recommend collecting PICTURES of the items instead of the actual items in a ziploc bag to bring home. You can even use one of those new Polaroids and make an album of all the things you find outside. Taking the item home goes against the practice of leave no trace because you are teaching children to remove things from its natural environment. We should be teaching them to have as little impact as possible which is what environmental stewardship is all about. Letting kids think it’s ok to take a leaf home from the park is how we end up with signs in national parks asking people to not take any rocks or shells they find because if everyone who visited took one thing home, there wouldn’t be much left to see.

2 questions: 1) Everyone always talks about cold weather or rainy weather - but how do you manage hot and sunny weather that is uncomfortable for the adult? Do I just sweat it out and suffer or is there some suggestion someone has for making walks on hot days more bearable? For reference, I'm in Florida. 2) How do you manage a younger baby while allowing your toddler to explore? Stroller? Babywearing? Wagon?
@HapaFamily

I would consider perhaps bringing an umbrella to shade out some of the sun as you walk? Also, take breaks in the shade whenever you can, and bring lots of water. And sunscreen! I’m originally from Florida, so I am totally familiar with what you’re talking about. :) as for what to do with the baby, I usually put her in the carrier or a wagon. ☺️👍🏻

I usually put Mia in the carrier on me, or in the wagon. She does not like being in a stroller at all, I think she feels super confined because the straps hold her down and she can’t lean forward or turn around to look at anything. @@HapaFamily mostly better. no fever, not much trouble breathing, only a little pain. Still no energy or appetite, and I suspect I have at least one cracked rib, or at least very bruised. This is day 25 for me, so I am definitely almost recovered. 😇 Thank you so much for asking. Hope all of your loved ones are well.

Hi Ashley! I have been watching and loving all your videos. I have watched all the videos from Montessori At Home vlog. I really have one confusion regarding language. I am from Nagaland, India(We have our own tribal language and babies/toddlers are encourage to learn it from the very young age). So, how do we really start with language when English is not our first language?🤷🏻‍♀️ We teach, learn and speak english in schools and colleges however we also have our own mother tongue to teach a baby/children (at home). Can you please suggest how to go about it? Shall we balance both the languages at one go or have to wait for the right age or I don’t know 🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️

I wish I had known about this when my son was little. He's 8 yrs old now, has autism and ADHD and is very everywhere. Can this practice still work for him? Can I change something to change all he knows up until now?

A question: my baby is around 13 M old and is trying to learn how to walk alone. When I take him outdoor, he seems to be quite afraid of standing/sitting on grass. I don't quite get what he is afraid of though. Any suggestion?

What would you do if your child decided in the future that they no longer like going outside and want to stay in?

I think you should let them be comfortable with that especially during these times .

How should a parent behave when the child wants to eat mud or rocks, etc.?

I don't let my sons eat mud or rocks. I give them other ideas of things to do with the mud and rocks, such as feel it between their fingers.

Explain those things aren’t for their mouths - ... they may have a vitamin deficiency. Idk

hey ashley, really enjoyed watching this video..it’s very encouraging. Just wanted to suggest maybe go cherry picking with the girls or something alike. We did that as children on a farm , it’s one of the best memories i have xXx

Sure it is! :) That's why I posted it! Getting outdoors right now is incredible for those in quarantine, as our family is, too. Good for physical AND our mental health right now! As long you're practicing social distancing properly.

Jennifer Fraile Carnicer yikes! That is certainly difficult! 😬 Where we are, quarantine still allows for outdoor exercise, so long as social distancing is practiced. In any event, this video was intended for the long term, not just in the current moment. So hopefully you may be able to find it helpful for the future, as well! 🥰💕
