I love how you are open to allowing "non typical" Montessori work/materials. Fantastic. You actually inspire me to enjoy the Montessori method once again. Your daughter seems very advanced in her holistic development. Typically children from age 3 can learn to do twelve piece puzzles

I grew up with Montessori and I loved poring activities. I loved poring water from a pitcher to a bowl. And using a small measuring cup to pick up beads from a container. Just some suggestions. 💛

@@user-wp5cf4uf3b yes, they are able to pour water. I usually do this in a classroom setting so I dont usually allow my younger children to pour water because they aren't able to carry the tray, fill the pitcher at the sink, pour the water without spilling etc. I'm sure it's fine at home, but is chaos in the classroom

I just really love how you incorporate Montessori without having to have all of the things. Like, plastic slide instead of pikler triangle? Trays don't really fit but they get the job done. I can get so caught up in having to have things "perfect" in order to feel like I'm doing it right. Also, magnatiles are the most amazing toy! My kids definitely learned shapes because of magnatiles. The things my four year old is coming up with these days is blowing my mind.

I’m not a mother or planning to be one anytime soon but I find this stuff to be interesting. I think when I eventually have kids, I’ll use the Montessori method. I like how it’s focused on learning and independence.

Great idea to tie a bead at the end of the threading game so that your daughter can play independently. Why didn’t I think of that?! My children love theirs but get frustrated without help

Love your Montessori update videos! My son is 17 months, so it’s wonderful getting ideas for the coming months! And yes, the fruit and veggie printable shows up when you search google images! So excited to have it up for my son, going over all of the different foods he knows is one of his favorite activities! Also wanted to say it has been really helpful seeing all of the books you rotate in from the library! I’m always looking online for new book ideas for us and love seeing what’s on your shelf! It’d be fun to see bookshelf update vlogs and hear your review on your library picks what you guys thought of them 😃

Oh good because I did try to look for the one we have and I couldn’t find it anymore. I did see a bunch of other great ones that look almost the same, though! And sure, I can certainly do book selection updates! We rotate books almost weekly or biweekly, but perhaps I can film an update for the bigger seasonal ones! :)

You're very well educated. Most people don't understand the way a child's brain develops or what types of activities help with the development of certain skills. Puzzles help with a child's cognition, fine motor, hand eye coordination, and analytical thinking skills. The ability to recognize, manipulate and, replicate patterns is the very core of math. It really does frustrate me that people don't seem to get this. The toys in your daughters play room serve the dual purpose of teaching valuable skills, they're not just there to make her sit still and be quiet... that's how raising a child is supposed to be done.

I thought of a question when you got to the whole non fiction/ fiction book part- will you do traditional holiday things with your kids like Santa or the Easter bunny or anything like that? Or how would you go about explaining those things to them?

I didn't grow up with montessori, but my parents always told me and my brothers the truth about those stories if we asked about it. Like, on Christmas they would buy us presents and put them under the tree during the night, but when we asked if they were from Santa, they just said no. And a year later when we asked if Santa was real, they just said no again. They would answer just to what we asked. And that never stopped us to love or imagine about those holidays. Actually, I used to write letters to Santa, even though I knew he didn't exist. It was just fun!

I once read that a possible answer may be that they (Santa, Eater bunny) exist in the fantasy world... That way you don't destroy the fantasy, but you also don't lie about it...

@@JuliaGandolpho I had a very similar experience. I didn't grow up with Santa but I enjoyed Christmas without the notion of him. To me it was still magical just in a very different way. It didn't center around presents but was about family and traditions.

When my child eventually asks if Santa is real, I intend to say yes. For I myself believe in Santa Clause, and I will explain to them why. Santa may not be an old man who watches over you all year long and lives at the north poll, but there is someone who watches over you all year and cares deeply about what makes you happy. Those people are Momma and Daddy, and we carry on the tradition set forth by a man who lived long ago and went by the name of St Nicholas. Through us, his spirit of care and generosity lives on and is very much real. And one day they will get to be Santa for their own children if they choose to have any. Life is about creating magic in everyday moments, and I hope my son will enjoy the fact that he will be able to create his own magic and share it with others.

Such an important question!!! I currently have a 17 month old and have been wondering how I'll address the same thing... But then Mr. Rogers immediately popped in to my head and I've decided I'll say that Santa and the Easter Bunny live in "The Land of Make-believe"... like King Friday and Daniel the Lion in Mr. Rogers neighborhood... I REALLY make a point to limit screen time... but when I/Mommy NEEDS a "Time-out"... OR when I NEED to be reminded of How to Play, How to Wonder, How to Imagine, HOW TO LOVE... That's When I Have to "Mr. Rogers" MYSELF. Love to all of you on this Journey we call Life ♥️... 🎵 "I Like, The Person that You Are Becoming"... 🎶

Just got your videos in my recommendations. I like your Montessori ideas of bedrooms and playroom around the house! As for fiction books - you are right in having them home! Modern psychologists are more calling for the development of fantasy and belief in miracles. This develops our right hemisphere - which is responsible for the imagination, it is it that forms certain images of the world and sets the direction for thinking: what needs to be done to make this miracle come true? If individuals and humanity as a whole had never believed in miracles, we would not have had cars, telephones, airplanes, and indeed, there would have been no progress.

I haven't seen that Montessori book before, that would help me a lot with Alex's education. I love Kylie's little kitchen and her art area! I've been looking for a shelf where I can separate the activities and not keep it all together in one spot, but they're so expensive, the ECR4Kids Birch. The Ikea one would work just fine. The wooden jigsaw puzzle is a great toddler activity, the matching color cards as well! So sweet that you have snacks together at the little table :)! When I worked at the Montessori preschool, the little ones always loved the sensory bins, they were fighting over those all the time, lol! Great video, Ashley ❤️!

I like your version of the Montessori playroom . Lots of cubbies and baskets full of interesting stuff to check out . Colorful books within a child's reach . Most of the so called Montessori playrooms I've viewed are a not exactly a cornucopia of sensory intriguing toys to play with . I guess I haven't learned to worry about overstimulation like most moms , yet . Anyhow . Not bad .

Thank you for this! Like many others already said, I love how you allow materials and things that aren't per se Montessori but are actually great fun for the kids. We are quite minimalistic by nature and drawn to natural things, so sometimes maybe not providing enough fun by avoiding plastic.. So this is inspiring. Without having looked into a montessori setup, we actually have many similar things for our 2 year old though. Scissors are definitely the favourite here as well! :D I am inspired by what you said about choosing realistic books, by your book shelf and by the little table and chairs for drawing! It's certainly time to leave the floor for creative activities.. Luckily I've got a carpenter at home :) oh and I love how you refer to her drawing as artwork

I watched the video on positive discipline and liked it very much. I worked briefly in Montessori and as a nanny until I had a child of my own. I was particularly interested in the playroom idea. It is a beautiful room and I am sure the organization helps foster independent skills because it would be easy to clean up after activity. I think that reality oriented toys (kitchen, broom) are nice as well since those capabilities can carry over into other areas of the home, contributing to being part of a busy family. But I do wonder how you integrate aspects of more childlike, free (messy, artistic, child-generated) play into your home?

I absolutely love all things montessori and i'm trying to implement as many as i can. The problem is my 2.5 year old likes to destroy everything. everything just gets tossed around and misused/abused as soon as he is bored with an activity. I cant give him independent play with any of this stuff especially art supplies they would be gone as soon as i take my eyes off him. He does help me clean up more often now but a lot of times just wants to dump everything out again as soon as it's away and it sometimes becomes a battle.

Just a question out of genuine curiousity, since I'm really not familliar with Montessori and the believes behind it: why exactly does it matter that books are realistic and if they are not, that it's important to talk about how they aren't real? I personally grew up reading non-realistic books and absolutely loving them. I don't remember ever hearing my parents make sure I'd know it was all fake, and I've never given it a second thought or anything. I understand that every kid is different, but I think I turned out just fine after reading those books without the talks, haha! Edit: native language isn't English, so sorry if my grammar isn't fully correct

Basically, it can be hard for children under the age of 6 to distinguish between reality and fantasy so although it’s not necessarily harmful for them, it’s helpful to keep everything factual

I don't understand this either. I even doubt if it's true that a child untill the age of 6 doesn't understand the difference. The fact that a child shows a lot of interest in fiction doesn't mean it thinks it's reality, in my opinion. And why would fiction harm a child (unless you are lying to your child about facts when your child wants to know about it)? I think it would have more serious consequences for a child if it's imagination is constantly interrupted. It's not fun at all to say: we know that the fish can't talk, while you're engaging in storytime. This is the only thing I don't like about different philosophies, that they pin down the developmental stages like that. I think this really depends on the child much more than age. I do understand how it can be helpfull to have an outline of the developmental stages. But it's not like a child would know the difference between fiction and fact just overnight because it turned 6. What's also interesting to me is that the Waldorf philosophy has the opposite opinion. That a child loves to hear fiction stories and imagine things and that this should be highly encourgaged in the child especially untill the age of 7. Although I see value in the practical life skills and the imitating of real life things, I see as much value in imagination and story driven play. I intend to give my children room for both.

Out girls LOVE the kitchen too. We have a similar one. It’s helped them learn a lot about fruits and veggies! We love the musical toys too! I feel like we own every Melissa and Doug toy ever invented. But they are fantastic for Montessori.

I love the Montessori way but am having trouble implementing anything like this. I feel like I need to keep all toys, crafts, etc out of reach because it ends up all over the place. If it’s out do they learn to take better care of their things? I have a 1, 2.5, and 3.5 yr old.

I love your videos!! I worked on my sons playroom today... got a shelf out in the living room space and placed some activities out on there for him. He is 4 years old and was getting somewhat confused on what i should bring out for him as lately he seems lost and not sure what to play with. He has a lot of non montessori inspired activities although out on the shelf i have a puzzle with pictures and words... magna tiles... books...stensil and colours... lego...so these should entertain him for a week or so as that is when rotation should then be due? Would love your comments and help on this as i feel lost!!

I thought perhaps I had misspoken, so I went back to watch that clip again, and I was definitely holding a right triangle. Where do you store the items you’re rotating? I just need to downsize my kids play area. It’s too overwhelming and gets to be a huge mess quickly! We just don’t have the space for lots of things. I’m a momma of 4 kiddos ages 6, 5, 5, and 3, plus I’m a foster momma and have a 7 year old girl.

Did you have problems with her trying to color on the wall? I have to put her crayons in mason jars with the lids so she has to ask to access them so we can keep an eye on her! She drew all over her bedroom wall in a split second.

How often do you rotate? I’m an AMS Montessori directress feeling a little constrained by Montessori at home without space for a dedicated classroom. I like the limited amount of options you have available for her.

If you don't have a lot of space and need to convine playroom with another área of the hose, what would be the recomendation? sleeping room, living area?

How do you deal with messes? Like I have said in another video... I am VERY intrigued and interested... but how do you do it? The thought of letting my toddler cut or play with play doh while I’m not on top of her while her sister is napping otherwise it’s not happening really overwhelms me! That said, I really want to try this... any beginner videos or easy transition ideas/videos? Thanks!

No Name I just stay calm and clean them up as they come along. I like asking my son to help out with the tidying up, or simply just explaining that we have to take some tome out to clean up. When they see you model the behaviour they catch on and realize that tidy up time is also a vital part of the activity.

You need to get ocd treatment or not have children. Children make a mess as long as you clean it up and teach them to help what's the issue?

I just looked up that plant on the shelf because I’ve been meaning to find a good plant to add for my kids to take care of. But online it says Golden Pothos is a poisonous plant and should be kept away from small children and pets. Do you have any other plant recommendations?

By 2 yrs old, my twins had already smashed a flat screen with a toy broom stick and broke a 7 ft Xmas tree by knocking it over. They broke things on a weekly basis. That playroom would be broken and trashed in days with my 2 yrs.

I see alot of videos of people doing the open shelves like u do. I was thinking of buying a cube shelf like urs but was thinking of doing it with the actual cubes put in the slots. Is there a benefit in not putting cubes in and it being open?

Leaving it open is intentional - it allows the child to see the material beautifully displayed, is attractive and enticing for them to try, and much easier for them to grab it and then put back.

Hi can you explain something about Montessori mirror please 🙏🏻❤️ so is it normal mirror or child safe one, like acrylic one? How do you get it on to the wall so it won’t fall?

Anastasia Putilina If you go on Amazon and type in Montessori mirror, there are a lot that have a stick back and ones that you can secure with thick nails. They can be a bit more on the expensive side, but it is worth it. Also look up Montessori balancing mirror and it comes with a balance grasp, this allows them to learn how to sit unassisted, pull themselves up, etc. :)

Also you can use a regular mirror, reflection is the concept. So anything reflective will do the same job :)

Anastasia Putilina if you watch the baby room set up she covers it. The options are one that is treated and has a film so that if it breaks it there won’t be shards everywhere or you can get an acrylic one. The bedroom mirror is also screwed to the wall for safety. It’s a really good video on the baby room and covers lots of safety stuff.

Nell J It’s the same on the ceiling. The way our ceiling is structured there’s a beam that juts out over that space a bit, so we were able to use just a screw and a key ring hanging from it at the top. On a standard ceiling you could also use a ceiling hook (like the kinds for plants) and just hang the keyring off of that! 😊👍🏻

Doing a marathon of your videos. I have 18 months and 34 months and think all of your activities will be awesome for them. A question for you is how do you teach your kids not to color all over the house? I remind them all the time but they still color on walls and all over, so I have to put away all their art supplies where they cannot reach. Thanks!

Toddlers love to test limits. You’re absolutely right to gently and consistently remind your children that we “only color on paper”. If stray marks do happen on the table, I try to first give my daughter the benefit of the doubt that perhaps it was genuinely an accident. Or maybe she just got carried away in her excitement, as toddlers often do. It helps to try to remember that they’re not doing it just to make you mad, they’re just little scientists at heart, always experimenting! But when I do discover a stray mark, I start by reminding her of the rule, and then ask her how we can fix the problem. She typically readily jumps up to get her tiny sponge from the art cart and cleans it up by herself (so having tools available for them to independently remedy such a problem is a good starting place). If she doesn’t think to get her sponge on her own for some reason, I will get it for her and kindly ask her to clean it up. Whenever possible, I do not clean up her trangressions for her - we try to stick with natural consequences (if she makes the mess, she cleans it up). I think that by itself goes a long way to ensuring it doesn’t happen repeatedly. If she repeats the stray coloring again (so I can safely assume it was on purpose and not an accident), then I remind her of the rule again and kindly but firmly (no need to yell or scold) take away the marker/crayon/etc, while also informing her that she may try again at another time when she is better able to remember the rule. Also, simply trusting your children to learn to be responsible and providing them with independent access to a limited amount of supplies eventually removes the majority of the novelty and temptation. Once they learn to be more responsible, you can gradually give them access to more supplies.

At our daycare, toys are rotated about every month but sooner if the kids loose interest in them. Books are more often though so there’s always a new book.

It (the orange one I am referring to) has one corner that is a 90 degree angle, so it is most definitely a right triangle. (Interestingly, right triangles also happen to be isosceles, since they have two angles that are equal. So it’s technically an “isosceles right triangle”. Honestly this seems way too regimented and strict. I actually don't think trading out activities is a bad idea as it can mean the kid doesn't get bored of their toys (as long as it's not a favourite toy with sentimental value that's just cruel). But how is only letting your child have one colour of play dough supposed to make her more creative? Also little kids can't differentiate reality from fantasy as well as older children and adults but it doesn't do them any harm. Have you also banned her from dreaming or having an imaginary friend? Learning is important but so is having fun and being a kid. There's only one age where you really get to believe in magic and wonder don't deprive your kids of that because you think it's going to make them smarter.
