There is an IGA and a Foodworks about 30 mins away and Toowoomba is about 1.5 hours away, but the fruit and veg that I have a good relationship with and Costco are in Brisbane and the cost of flour and meat at Costco is well worth that extra trip, I am lucky that I stay at my mums overnight though! if I couldn't do that, I don't think it would be feasible :D

The kindness of strangers, you may have been entertaining an angel unawares. The same thing happened to me. Mum & I were travelling from Injune to Roma after dark a flat tyre on the side of the road in the rain a Truckie stopped to assist & changed the tyre for us as quickly as he appeared he was gone again. I was worried about you when I saw insta and it was lovely to see you made it home this morning. I appreciate seeing the prices in other countries. For example one blueberry here costs 4.00. I buy what I can in bulk also. Sugar and flour and rice when ever it’s on sale. Butter here is 8.00 a pound for name brands. Never mind Ghee. I think your doing an excellent job supplying your family with good nutrition al foods. It’s a challenge more than ever. Our foods have gone up so much most families will pay ( if they have it ) 16K or more next year and the taxes are set to rise again. I’m a senior and can’t afford not to shop sales and bulk. Planning is essential, and even that is not enough because many things are not available. One day at a time ❤️
@OurSmallFootprint
@OurSmallFootprint Год назад
I'm glad we have found alternatives to using Ghee and we don't have to buy butter it is one thing that keeps going up and up and up! I definitely need more storage to be able to stock up more so that we can have a bit more of a buffer!

I would loose my mind if I could go grocery shopping, and pick up everything I needed for six weeks. We have tried making a weekly menu, and we never stick to it. Everyone is busy, and coming and going, and never home to sit down to a meal. All your meals look so good, and I'd love to spend a week with you, just sampling what you cook. Merry Christmas! Blessings to you and your family.
@OurSmallFootprint
@OurSmallFootprint Год назад
It was definitely an ongoing process, I didn't just turnaround one day and go, hey, I'm not going to shop for 6 weeks hehe, there was a process to it, from moving from fortnightly to monthly etc, it does take some thought power and a bit of a change in attitude towards what you 'want' to eat and what is available to eat! We did save money by doing it though, because it forced that kind of change of mindset :D

Nyssa how much of your groceries are supplemented by your garden or breaking down your own animals or food hampers and what not? I’m trying to find ways to tighten our purse strings but there’s grocery items my family just won’t let go of
@OurSmallFootprint
@OurSmallFootprint Год назад
@@theorganised_farmgal normally 90% of my veggies are from the garden, especially at this time of year, but the garden is not producing anything atm :s. Fruit trees will hopefully start producing in the next couple of years and we won’t have to buy as much fruit. We have a lot of egg laying hens so we use our own eggs to help stretch food too. I think one of the things that really helped was changing the way I shopped, by having longer between shops you got used to not always having fresh, you got used to eating the same meal a few times a week if that was all there was, at planning to bake bread because otherwise there wasn’t anything to eat with lunch etc

Idea: you could try to see if your kids like homemade rice milk. It is pretty easy to do with your thermomix. And if your kid like the homemade version of Rice milk you could buy rice in big sacks. And have less to buy when you do your hauls. I have a Vitamix, and I am known to make nut milks and oat milks.
@OurSmallFootprint
@OurSmallFootprint Год назад
I have tried and they’re really not keen unfortunately :S I have two who are autistic and change is pretty hard. I could probably force the change over a while, stop buying it and only provide homemade and after a few months they’d get over it (I had to do it with homemade mayo) but it would be a lot of work :)

Thank goodness you made it home ok, especially with so much food on board. That would have been my main worry. An excellent shopping expedition, very impressed with the amount of meat you managed to buy, that ham is an amazing price. My husband likes to check out the local supermarkets at 6pm on Sunday, they drop the price on meat then. He bought 2 kilos of chicken thighs for $1.16! He only bought 2 packets though, I said why didn't you get more? He buys dog food for a much higher price! He says next time he'll buy lots more. He's noticed that the staff have been stocking up on meat too, sometimes they take everything on sale.

I’ll go more in depth in tomorrows video because it’s a bit long winded! But basically we were doing fortnightly to Toowoomba and it just was costing so much without access to Costco and things like that, so I started going every four weeks to Brisbane to try and see how much it would cost, I could spend almost the same for a month as I was for a fortnight! But now with the fuel prices etc, I’d like to reduce the trips a little more!
@ash06101985
@ash06101985 Год назад
What are your plans to combat rising food prices and the impact on your stockpile?
@OurSmallFootprint
@OurSmallFootprint Год назад
I think I have to reassess again, reassess the budget and how it is spread out, try and allocate some more funds towards increasing the stockpile so that we have a base qty larger to start with, but all of that is part and pacrel of building the new pantry, atm we have limited storage, so things like flour etc, I can only buy as much as I can store, so I need access to maybe some larger containers that I can store a couple of bags in, but also need the pantry extension built to have room for those containers! It's all very much an ongoing process, and of course, every year the kids are getting bigger and eating more, and that is impacting my ability to understand my stockpile, like for instance, when I make a pasta meal with dried pasta, we now go through 2 bags (1kg vs 500g) of pasta with very little leftovers whereas we used to be able to use just one bag! and i didn't realise that, so the stockpile pasta got depleted much faster without me compensating.

Hi Nyassa I’m new to bottling. The book I have says that when bottling, that I have to put salt in the water to make it become hotter quicker. Does that still apply. My book is pretty old.
@OurSmallFootprint
@OurSmallFootprint Год назад
It's a bit like salting pasta water, it does bring it to a boil a bit quicker, but the quantity you would have to add to make any significant difference is far more than would be efficient/economical, so I wouldn't bother doing it, I don't recall ever seeing anything that states it but I'm going to go and do a google lol! I do not add salt to my water, I just put a lid on to help with the efficiency of the water coming to a boil and I use a loose fitting lid while water bath canning or the sealed lid while pressure canning, which again, helps it come up to a boil quicker helps with evaporation and helps to keep it at a boil for the period of time! :D
@whatever-ql5ns
@whatever-ql5ns Год назад
@@OurSmallFootprint thanks so much Nyassa. It is probably an original 1960’s book, which I bought off eBay. I thought the same thing, as regards tipping heaps if salt in to the boiling water. Didn’t seem economical to me. Maybe salt was cheaper 60 years ago lol. Love your show.♥️
