I’m looking at the table of produce and saying to myself wow that’s amazing …it resembled the produce store itself …Then I gulp when I remember how much work goes with it all in such quick amount of time before it perishes !!! May the Force be with you each and every Month!😊
Because you are a good shopper and make all your meals from scratch ( nutritional and all look super tasty 😋 ) and your budgeting is AWESOME Girl I think you are just a wonderful example 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉 Love from the UK x
That's what we're doing at the moment, but we don't have much open space to do it in lol, can't do it in the fenced yard because of the dogs, so we've got some strung up out the back where we can. We have a big Hills Hoist style line, which I think is an Australian thing, and it allows us a lot of hanging room in a fairly small space!
Hey Nyssa🥰 I honestly don’t know how you do it after such a long drive!!! I think I would just get the freezer & fridge stuff in & collapse on the couch! Great grocery shop & stock up everything. Definitely worth keeping the inventory. Love the cast iron pots & pans from your mum, beautiful colour too! Hope you’re resting with you feet up now 😌😅🥰
The setting up and filming once home is pretty exhausting lol, but I'm not in a position to not do it right then and there lol, so it is what it is! :D
I find it difficult to remember to film tbh, all the normal daily boring stuff lol, it doesn’t feel shareworthy! But I will try, especially as we move through winter and back into growing season etc!
I live in the US and i could never, ever touch the prices you get your fruit and veg for.... Even before the currency conversion. That is absolutely amazing! And I love my tramontina braiser pan.
Nyssa, your absolutely amazing 👏 I've learned so much from you since I started following you. I couldn't agree more that food is one of thr most important bills in our home. I've also learned to make sourdough bread from you. Amongst a hole host of other meals from scratch and its helped me so much. Thank you so much for doing these vlogs I lm sure they take a huge amount of time and effort. But it's so appreciated by everyone.
I think you are amazing!! You really take a lot of effort to make these videos and its very appreciated !! Thank you for all the hard work you do !!!❤❤❤❤❤
I think you're doing an amazing job on your grocery shops. And then you prepare everything to preserve for later usage and for the daily food that y'all eat. I'm still waiting on my garden to start producing so we can put some of it up. Happy late birthday Nessa 🎉🎂🌹
Nice Haul Nyssa..and for American Money it's only 274 dollars a week which is excellent, because I live alone in America and my groceries add up to around that much every 2 weeks because of the things I need to buy that agrees with my stomach issues which are VERY EXPENSIVE like Kefir , cottage cheese yogurt and everything that's easily digested..so once again you did a fantastic job .. you're the next best thing to being a Amish or Mennonite mother and wife ..fresh and home cooked meals and canning and preserving and homeschooling and you're honest and humble and appreciate the little things in life not materialistic stuff ..win win all around
Nyssa, I am in love with your videos. I look forward to them no matter what type it is. You are so easy to listen to and very informative. Thank you for doing them as often as you do. I'm very curious about that last fruit you showed. It looks like corn on the cob but green 😅. Is there something you can compare it to? Can't wait for the next video!!
It is a monstera, it is a tropical fruit, the kids reckon it is similar to pineapple, you have to wait till it ripens to eat it, if you eat it green it is unpleasant in your mouth, it is very acidic, as it ripens, all those little hexagonal type shapes start to lift up off the 'cob' and the fruit just pops off! I'll try and get some footage of the kids eating it as it ripens :D
Nyssa your budgeting is fantastic 🎉 Your family eats amazing healthy tasty meals with a huge variety of choice 👏👏 You could run a Country's Financials no bother!!! Thank you for sharing ❤️❤️ Love from the UK x
The laundry lines...I have two of them that I have had for several years. A word of caution, be careful not to break off the tab at the bottom. I hope you like them!
We're having a hard time getting the tension right so they don't end up sagging when clothes are on them! But they will work fine for the interim until we replace the big rotary clothes line hehe :D
Everything looks great!! I appreciate how much work it is just to GET all the food, plan, etc. Well Done!! Do you ever pickle cauliflower? (with some mild peppers?) What an awesome gift from your Mom, lovely pans!!
We have done, fridge pickled cauliflower and broccoli and things like that, super tasty, but the biggest issue is fridge space, I've never done it as a long term shelf thing though, hrmm, may have to try but I think the best part of pickled cauli is the crunch!
Hello, not linked to this video, I wondered if you would consider/had time, to do an ebook recipe book people could buy? You have got me trying sourdough starter again. I just made bread with it before but gave up as I hot a bit overwhelmed with it. Being able to use it for different things would be great. I'm sure lots of viewer would be willing to buy an ebook. Thank you.
I'm trying to put everything on the blog so everyone can reference there, and make it easier than searching through my videos! But I just keep running out of time. But once its there, it would be simple to collate it into a document for people too. Lol, I need more hours in the day :D
Once again it's great to see your shopping. If it can show young people that you can buy carefully and just use your time to prepare meals the cost goes down greatly
There is definitely a learning curve to it, I didn't just manage to do it one day, it took time, but its well worth it, the quality of food for the cost is definitely a worthwhile thing.
Do you have any scone recipe videos? I have been looking at your post but it’s hard to see everything. It’s fine if not. You make me get in the kitchen and cook!🥰
@@robincox4775 I’m trying to get all the recipes up on the blog lol, that way they’re much easier to find, it has been a very long winded process :s. Not enough hours in the day! I’ve not made scones in a long time! I used to make the basic recipe that my grandmother always made, Australian/British style served with jam and cream!
It’s the small things that make life easier. I try to buy things like ice cream on offers and stock up for that 2 week period. I also buy things on rebate deals and often get freebies too.
You’re amazing. It must take so much planning, but I guess you get into a rhythm after quite a few of these trips. Happy 40th! Those pots and pans look great and you’ll get so much use out of them. I was 40 in January and it didn’t occur to me to get some good pots! I guess I’ll keep using my old and crusty ones until I’m able to get new ones
I find that its pretty straight forward these days, I do tend to buy much the same each month, I don't limit myself to only the same, I definitely shop the sales and stuff too, but there's a definite same sameness to what I get! THey were a really great price too, 70 and 90 I think, something like that, we were admiring them and she was like, I haven't bought you a birthday present yet lol.
Whooo hooooo! Nyssa, once again a great grocery haul. That fresh veg looked so good. I alway get hungry watching your hauls and cooking. I know those babies are going to really enjoy those grapes and apples! Me, I'd go for the carrots. Enjoy your hot dogs, and have a good evening.
They have been wolfing the grapes already hehe, I told them they needed to be some of the first fruit they ate, they never last as long as the apples and mandarins, they just don't store well!
Oh I love home made marshmallows. My mum used to make it for us, coated in toasted coconut. It was THE bomb. Look forward to your recipe & may try myself.
They are so much better than storebought, the texture is just miles above! But it is slightly fiddly lol, so I have to put aside the time to make them, they do last really well in the freezer though! except the kids help themselves if they're there lol.
Nyssa if you know the brand of the airer, check if they have a site. Example brand is Brabantia, they have a site and you are able to contact them. Worth a try !
This one was Austral, we're trying! before we invest in a new one lol.... but I don't have any proof of purchase etc, we bought it in June of 2018, I know that, but my computer at the time died and I didn't have any email backups so I only have email back to December of 2018 :S. I'm happy to pay for the part though, if I can find it! :D
Nyssa thanks so much for all of the effort you put in....im loving your videos and the way you explain everything...we have recently moved from qld to victoria.....living out if town here which i am loving...doing a grocery shop once a fortnight....wish we could be like you guys and do it once every six weeks and be off grid....trying some of your recipes too....have forgotten the correct bame but the cabbage pancakes, soooooo good!!!! Thanks again 😊
Are they Okonomiyaki cabbage pancakes? I love the way Nyssa took the recipe and made it so much easier to make for those of us who like it simple and easy. Faster to make means faster to get it on the table for those hungry for something tasty and different
I found it hard at times looking at all the recipes to get the ratios right, things listed as 1/4 of a cabbage, or a handful of a cabbage or whatever, that's so variable lol :D
Happy 40th! Enjoyed the Costco products as I see a few that are available to 🇨🇦 like the cast iron pots and pans. Son bought same ones and he enjoys cooking in them. Vegeta and Monstera had me googling 😅 but now I know. Comparison wise celery is 5$ CDN (5.54$AUS) each for a small number of wimpy stalks. Needless to say not many being purchased. Look forward to seeing the bacon making video.
ick! Celery is about $2-$3 generally, I didn't check the price, I buy one each month regardless, I do love that I can get it to last all month with the foil trick and any limp bits can go in the freezer for stock! :D
Aldi still has 2kg bags of bone in chicken pieces but of course you get some wings and things amongst it. They also do 2kg bags of just chicken drumsticks or wings which I have bought for soup stock and for fried chicken. I cut the tips off and separate the wings into “wicked wing” type pieces.
I made a batch of apricot chicken and put some of the vegetables powder into it ❤😋 👌 . Chicken Apricot nectar Pack French onion soup mix ---Tbs of VEGETA... 🎉🎉🎉
I use Vegeta in everything, one the best things to have. I also use the Steggles Chicken Mixed Pieces 2kg from woolies for $9 for making stock, i boil them up pull the chicken off them then put the bones back in to make stock
We buy chicken frames for our dogs sometimes. They are also good for making stock. There's 3 or 4 in a bag. Also we buy dog bones. We use the meaty beef bones to make a large pot of soup. Oxtail is lovely, but way too expensive. With the bones that have been boiled for the soup, you can put them in your soil, I usually put them around a fruit tree, or you can cook them down more until they are soft for your dogs! I'm exhausted just looking at all those groceries that need putting away! You deserve your treats of cheese!
The chicken frames at the butcher were one frame for $2, I considered it but hesitated at that price :S. I did contemplate using some of the dog bones to roast and make stock out of lol! When we do the chicken stocks we always cook it down till you can just squish the bones for the dogs, they adore it! :D
I have never found it excessively cheap if you shop the sales elsewhere, but it is frustrating that even the stuff that was cheap has increased somewhat :S
I don’t buy the Costco frozen veggies either anymore. We didn’t like them. I do like their Salami and bought some twiggy sticks this time to try. The stock powder I nearly bought but didn’t due to Msg in it. What a great birthday present from mum. I was eyeing them off at Costco. Did they tell you about the new card at Costco? Dearer to be a member off, double, but can get a big credit at the end of the year. Maybe viable for you? I declined. Yeah the olive oil is often out of stock. I try to keep a large amount on hand when can. I’ve noticed no bone in also. Your veggie source always has great veggies for you. Another great supply of groceries bought this month
Msg is in most of these type of things, I haven’t noticed issues with us using it in the small amounts we do, no one seems sensitive :) Love practical gifts! They did, I dunno. 29 cash back this shop would have been what I earned and yes I do spend much the same every 6 weeks, which is $250 over 12 months and the membership is $130 so there would be some savings, I left it this time I’ll have a think!
A washing line/laundry line is essential for me. Especially now during the summer in the uk. I do a wash everytime it's dry outside lol 400 dollars which I think is about £210 is fairly cheap for a family of 8, which included toiletries, household cleaning etc plus clothing and other things. Especially with the price of living at the moment. It's just me and my husband and we spend about £70 a week.
It's definitely on the budget end when you compare it to people who live closer to amenities, but there is a lot of work required and not everyone has the time or ability to do the massive amount of food prep I do, which is totally understandable! I'm trying to find a spare part for our current clothes line but I'm not having much luck! I really dont' want to buy a whole new one, they're expensive and this one is only five years old!
@@OurSmallFootprint my clothes line is just tied with a hook from one end of the garden to the other. So we have 2 lines. You get far more on than the prop ones. Very basic but does the job lol
@@lisaburns235 I have one of the big rotary ones, a hills hoist style, I think it’s an Australian thing, it’s 58m of line in a big square shape that spins and can be wound up and down
Nissa you do a grand job I find it hard just for 3 people and with my special diet makes it harder and more expensive so I go without I started growing my salad veg with tags so Bronson went along and took them out bit by bit so now I don't know wot is wot lol ❤️ my pumpkin plants are great in its own tub birds ate my strawberries out of hanging basket not doing good so far look forward to next video
I tried those Maesri tins of curry paste but I found that 1 tin wasn’t enough to do a large batch of curry for a family of 7. I would try it again but I would probably use 2 tins.
The items from your friend are nice - lemons and the long green "fruit." Tell us about that. Lots of work to buy all those items for your food for 6 weeks. Too bad Costco was out of Olive Oil. They need to order more or something. See you next video. I look forward to you uploading videos Nyssa.
I will try and remember to get some footage of the kids eating the Monstera! it is an interesting fruit, you can only eat it when its ripe and when it is it sort of peels itself almost! :D
You are wonder woman I don't know how you do it all. Grew up in the country so know how much work it is to do the things you do. Since I am 83 it was simpler because we didn't worry about allergies etc. probably didn't know that is the problems we had. LOL
Hehe, simpler foods without the processing helped too I think, a lot less preservatives were used just in general, so less things to trigger some peoples health!
Is it possible to order certain items, like the olive oil, from Costco online? In the states they will do free shipping if you meet a certain dollar threshold which you clearly do. Or maybe place an order for in-store pick up and then you know if they have the items you want before you get there. Might free up a bit of time for you, and of course you could always add on if the impulse strikes you 😉 I'm really enjoying learning how you are able to process, preserve and meal plan food in these quantities. Also, made your foccacia bread today, super yummy and I've already made two meals from it:)
Costco's online system here the pricing includes shipping, which means everything is a bit more expensive if you order it for delivery, I hadn't thought to check if they had the olive oil online though! I just looked and nope, so it must be out everywhere currently! They don't do in store pickup either, only you go in and shop yourself. Mum and I do enjoy browsing the kitchen etc shelves too hehe, and she even bought an impulse from the sample cart lol, the watermelon drink for her smoothies hehe :D
Well that's a bummer! Since you're making a trip already it wouldn't cancel out the fuel cost either. I have started checking prices online before I do my shopping though because prices keep changing and going up and at least i can comparison shop and lessen the price shock a bit lol
Another fantastic shop! I’m sure your total wasn’t lower than last month’s due to prices decreasing. I know you found some deals and still had some items on your shelves that you didn’t need to buy, but do you think anything else contributed to your spending less this month?
I think there were a few 'splurge' buys last month because it was my birthday month! I bought a rib fillet for example, which I think was $70 last month, we got 3 meals out of it, but it was still expensive. The beef trim was 20kg instead of 16 this month. But I did buy Darryl new pants and I bought batteries at costco (which I forgot to show) which cost about $65 together I think. I'm not sure really! I think a lot of it is just the variables of what I need and don't need, I didn't buy any oats this month, we had plenty... No olive oil, but I didn't get that last month either! I was surprised at the difference being so large myself.
They do sell frames, but the frames are $2 each, its not the greatest value either, I did consider it this time though! The butcher in Toowoomba seems to sell their frames $2 a bag, so when D goes I'm going to get him to check, because if there is a couple in there for the $2 then that would be a better value for me! The actual pieces though, everything is really expensive, they have bone in thighs but they're $65 a box, which is a lot of work. Even the legs and wings were like $4 - $6 a kg, again just a lot of work for less value if that makes sense! I don't mind buying decent priced whole chooks, because they provide so many ways, not just the bones!
At the moment I'm spending around $300/week for 6 of us. Plus about twice a year I buy a quarter or half a cow to put in the freezer. We bought a half in January and it's all gone now except for some bones I haven't gotten around to using yet (but I have such a huge backlog of stock I don't really need to use them). Just a few more weeks and we'll have our tax refund and then I can buy another one. Freezer is looking very empty at the moment!
I bought a 1/4 last year but it didn't end up overly cost efficient :S. The trim from Costco is working out to be fantastic, gives us plenty of beef to use in various ways, we don't get any of the fancier cuts a lot (though I bought that clearance steak this month, but it was gone first night lol) but its still really nice to have beef!
Hi Nyssa, I know you go to Carindale for shopping have you considered going to the Golden Circle Outlet in Capalaba, it has some great deals and not too far from Carindale.
I do have a look at their specials but I think if I went I’d spend money I wouldn’t normally spend, occasionally there’s something I would normally buy at a cheap price but they have a lot of convenience type stuff at great prices! But if I don’t go, I don’t buy, if that makes sense ? Lol
Groceries are so high. I had four big boys who liked to eat, and my mom ate w/ us a lot…..and I spent about $500.00 a month. That was in the 1980’s. I thought it was a tremendous about of money. Gee, how nice that sounds now. Do you have a grocery store closer than Brisbane if you chose to go?
Toowoomba is about 1.5 hours away, and they have aldi and coles and woolworths etc, but you lose an entire day going there, we used to go every fortnight, before we started stretching out, Costco saves me a lot of money, so being able to go that little bit further was the initial reason and then I found the fruit and veg store too and got better at preserving and using all the fresh veg etc and it made more sense to make that bit of an extra trip.
No, they’re the fridge section, they’re our preferred, but I’m going to give the coles shelf stable ones a go on recommendation, they were pretty cheap! I haven’t much liked the shelf stable ones I’ve bought before (other than dried) but I’m always willing to try again and see if I like them better than I did previously heh
You mentioned that groceries are your most expense each month and you have minimal debt but you said you get food stamps , and a food pantry every 6-weeks correct? So you receive that much in foodstamps you just spent on this grocery haul? In the US for a family of 8 and if meeting the low income guidelines it’s roughly $1600 a month is it the same there for your size family or do you need to add to that ?
We don't have food stamps here in Australia, we do get some funds from the government, it is called Family Tax Benefit, and you get varied amounts depending on your income and the quantity of kids you have. The food pantry haul is every 4 weeks and we pay $50 for it :). It is worth much more than the $50, but we do pay for it, and anyone is eligible for that, they don't have to have any kind of low income or anything, anyone who wants one is able to purchase one :D
When it happens :). We don’t plan anything as such, they go to the park and stuff in town with Darryl and see other kids then etc, there’s six of them, they have plenty of company :). Be a bit diff if I only had 1! :)
I don't know if I've tried beef hotdogs to be honest, most I find are pork, these ones a pork/chicken mix, they're quite nice, but each sausage is individually wrapped which is kinda meh!
I have never tried the cashew cheese on cookidoo, I didn't know it was there only looked because you mentioned it lol! The dried noodles were from Coles, (though I did notice Amazon sells it for the same price too!) the recipe was from Pick up Limes that I made the other day! :D
I don't think its their brand, but they have an unpasteurised one in a plastic container with a lid and a breathable filter etc and it just smells/tastes nicer than the ones you buy in the plastic bags from coles/woolworths I've found!
Hey Lee, I definitely will, I've got them wrapped and ripening atm, and everyone has been asking, so I'll get some footage along the way of them ripening up and how they look when you eat them etc! I'm not a fan personally lol, but the kids love em!
I can remember loving them when I was young .. havnt had them for decades. Only eat the pieces that naturally have the covers falling of as the ripened... If you force the cover off and eat they are definitely not nine.😊
Do remember they're in AUD not USD, so there is a bit of a difference! hehe, but yes, some of our stuff is quite highly priced in comparison, especially meat, I find that the US has some really great deals on meat! We rarely get much of a discount.
A bit confused. I thought you made and enjoy your homemade soy sauce and you bought some. Not that I think you don't have enough to do because you do more than I could ever think of doing but I'm just curious if it was not cost effective to make your own. My heart breaks when you can't find bone in chicken and have to buy the more expensive boneless skinless chicken. Every 6-8 weeks a local store, not a chain, has chicken for sale by the 40 pound box. All of this is bone in chicken. Thighs were $39 per 40 pound box (98 cents/pound). Chicken quarters (legs and thighs) were $26 per box (65 cents/pound) and breasts were $69 per box ($1.72 /pound). I can only imagine how much you would buy or maybe rearrange you shopping trip to fall on the week where they are on sale.
