for those wondering why a station on the REM in Quebec is named Panama, it's actually named for the street that the park and ride entrance is on, which in turn is named for Panama City. A good number of main streets in the city of Brossard are named for foreign cities (e.g. Rome, Milan, San Francisco, Panama, etc.)

The voice of the REM is from Actress Caroline Dhavernas (Hannibal,Wonderfalls, Mary Kills People) She is the daughter of another actor (Sébastien Dhavernas) and actress (Michèle Deslauriers) which is one of the two voice of the Montréal Métro.

God, I miss this city. Lived here last year-- almost a week til I had to move back home to New York City after my work permit expired. My heart aches for the place, still.

Last time I was out there was 2018. They were building like crazy out there. It was like one big construction site. I need to go back. Love it up there.

lol, Deus-Ex Montagnes, I'm going to used that next time to annoy some French people. The West Island REM line got delayed till 2025 at the very least, they found old explosives in the Mount Royal tunnel.

Since my last Montreal visit was in 2010, this is all new to me. When I stayed in Brossard, I'd have to drive up Boul Taschereau to Longueuil to take the Metro into the city. Next time I'd be able to take the REM from the Panama station and get there much faster. The line will be real convenient once it's extended to Trudeau Airport in Dorval. When I flew into there, it always annoyed me that a big city like Montreal didn't have a direct rail connection. BTW, your French isn't all that bad; it's a lot better than mine. (Of course, people in France insist that what they speak in Quebec is NOT French!)

Both Toronto and Montreal are taking huge steps to expand their transit networks in different ways. This looks like a fantastic system. If I ever make it out East I’ll have to go for a ride. If you want to see what the Rem system will look like in a couple decades, take a look at the Skytrain in Vancouver. Fast, frequent automated trains soaring past blocks of transit-oriented development. Feels like the future! The tour of the Via and Exo facilities was also appreciated. The Renaissance cars are former purpose built rolling stock intended for operation on Eurostar services between London and Continental Europe, France, Belgium, Netherlands. They would have formed ‘Nightstar’ overnight sleeper trains, and were based on the British Rail Mark 4 carriages which at the time were the backbone of Intercity services on the East Coast Main Line, between London and Edinburgh. The carriages were built at Washwood Heath in Birmingham by Alstom. The carriages were the works penultimate products, their swansong was the Class 390 Pendolino tilting trains for the West Coast Main Line. The works closed soon afterwards, ending 143 years of carriage and wagon building at the site.

Just a few corrections to point out: 1. You mixed up the Sorel Subdivison with the Saint-Hyacinthe sub, the Sorel sub doesn't start in Montréal. 2. Nun's Island in French is pronounced Ile-Des-Soeurs, not Ile-des-Souers. 3. The new Samuel-de-Champlain bridge never had a toll both since its opening in 2019, but the old Champlain Bridge did have a toll booth until 1990. 4. The Victoria Bridge is a bridge for both trains (In the middle) and cars (on both sides). 5. Not a correction, but a missed opportunity to mention the upcoming in-fill station that is the Griffintown-Bernard-Landry REM station, which is gonna be located right after the curve that leads to Gare Centrale (at the corner of Ottawa St. & Dalhousie St. adjacent to the New City Gas) you can clearly see that there's an empty space that is about the length of a REM station. Also heres a little fun fact about the lights of the Samuel-de-Champlain Bridge : Normally the bridge is lit up in white, but during the migrations months, it is lit up in blue and green to guide the birds

The REM use the former Deux-Montagnes Line from EXO (Réseau de Transport Métropolitain)(RTM) between Deux-Montagnes (EX-Agence Métropolitaine de Transport (AMT) (1996-2017), EX-Canadian National (CN) (1923-2014), EX-Canadian Northern Railway(CNoR) (1918-1923). Here Exo is a Brand name while the Company is RTM but since AMT have been split in Réseau de Transport Métropolitain (RTM) and ARTM (Autorité Régional de Transport Métropolitain). ARTM = Fare and Planning. RTM= Operation of BUS in TRAIN in the suburbs of Montréal where no other transit agency like Société de Transport de Montréal (STM), (Montréal Bus and Métro), Société de Transport de Laval (STL) (Laval Bus) and Réseau de Transport de Longueil (RTL) .

I grew up in both Toronto and Montreal. The REM is new...it didn't exist in my day. I grew up with city buses and the Metro only. I see here Autoroute 10. I rode on it to Stanstead PQ coming from Toronto. Enroute to my nephew's wedding in Vermont. Autoroute 10 takes you btw to Sherbrooke. Everything you are mentioning I already know.

Little Confusion : The New Bridge built in 2014 is called Pont Samuel-de-Champlain (Bridge) while the old bridge was called Pont Champlain (Bridge)(1962-2014) was demolished after the new bridge was built. The old bridge had major Corrosion problems because they forget Québec heavy salted they road in winter and had no drain. The Old bridge was a Cantilever Bridge while the new use cable stayed instead. The new Bridge share the same architect as the Oresund bridge between Danemark and Sweden. it cost 4 B$ Canadian.

There is a most insane set of stairs that allows those to climb to the top of Mont Royal.

My better half is Canadian. We've talked of visiting her family in New Foundland and Labrador then taking the train to Montreal, Quebec and Toronto (and a detour for me to the Rogers Centre and a Blue Jays game). A big dream is to take VIA to Churchill Manitoba and see Polar bears in the wild

You did pretty well with the French...riiiiight up until Deux Montagnes. ;) As for your railfan acquaintance: Canadians are a proverbially polite bunch. The Quebecois are rather more...*direct*. We are in a distinct society. ;)

welcome to my neighborhood, and your french isn't the worst I've ever heard. A couple of facts though: Mont Saint-Hillaire isn't an extinct volcano, that's an urban myth. It's just a regular foothill. It is however, mostly owned by McGill University as part of the Gault Nature Reserve. Also the Champlain bridge you were on is new, the old toll bridge was slightly to the west and only the footings are left.

The new commuter rail cars for Montreal Canada are from CRRC of China the same company that is building the MBTA Orange and Red Line cars SEPTA of Philadelphia double deck cars and Los Angles new subway cars
