@@allenatkins2263 well the law is not about making sure that the 40% of French people who don’t speak English can get the signage, it’s about avoiding the 98% of Quebecers who speak French to have to use English in their day to day life. Quebec doesn’t want to simply preserve knowledge of French, they want to preserve its use as lingua Franca. The Ontario, Manitoba and Louisiana experience all demonstrated how a vibrant dominant French society can be whipped out within two Genereation when their language becomes reserved to the privacy of the home, when immigrants from other countries or region migrate and adopt a different language. Quebec is guilty of not providing French instruction to English speaking Canadians, preventing their intergration in mainstream society. It’s quite unfair that aliens are thought French, but the native are just told to make do and learn it themselves.

There are more people speaking french today, than there were alive 200 years ago. There is nothing organic about the way the Governement replaced us with immigrants. English was imposed by the state, French people did not just one day became english speaking and darker skinned. Except that in BC French Cannot be used in a official capacity, and Ontario has a county which makes unilingual french singage illegal. Law 101 is flawed, but it doesn't send people in jail for their oppinion like the criminal code does, it gives fines to buisnesses for using commercial singage solely in non official languages.

The rest of the country is more forgiving with this language policing like if you’re at a restaurant and it’s all English and you only speak French there’s a good chance one of the staff members speak French, and can translate for you Why is it that Quebec refuses to accommodate for English speakers, but expect us to accommodate for them They’re literally the only French speaking province, but the rest of the province has to have bilingual on everything

To the French-language militants: As a kid, I was forced to take French in school and was subject to all kinds of political propaganda and fighting over the French language. Decades later, I have learned German, Italian, and Spanish, and TO THIS DAY I have a distinct lack of desire to learn French, even as a language enthusiast! You force your language on people, and people will resist. I understand you concern, that you want to keep your language alive and thriving within Canada, but then you need to find a way to turn people on to the language and culture of Quebec. I whole-heartedly agree with the gentleman in what he says about that. I wish him and his family all the best as they continue forward with their business and their generous food program.

The rest of Canada is much less bilingual than Quebec. I live in a French Majority part of Ontario and singage in french is the exception, not the rule. Also, in BC, you cannot use french in courts outside of criminal proceedures. So two people married in Quebec would need to have all the documents translated to english to get a divorce there. Quebec, despite some of its excess, is in practice more bilingual than Ontario, Manitoba and New-Brunswick. In Quebec, english has a quasi official status, with governement services, the laws and the court being entirely bilingual.
