From Wikipedia:
Montrose is a neighborhood located in west-central Houston, Texas, United States. Montrose is a 7.5-square-mile (19 km2) area roughly bounded by Interstate 69/U.S. Highway 59 to the south, Allen Parkway to the north, South Shepherd Drive to the west, and Taft to Fairview to Bagby to Highway 59 to Main to the east. The area is also referred to as Neartown or Neartown / Montrose.
Montrose is one of the major cultural areas in Houston notable for its hipster culture, art scene, food scene, and nightlife. In the 1980s, it was the center of the gay community. Established in 1911, the neighborhood is a demographically diverse area with renovated mansions, bungalows with wide porches, and cottages located along tree-lined boulevards. Montrose has been called the "Heart of Houston" and the "strangest neighborhood east of the Pecos". It was named one of the "ten great neighborhoods in America" in 2009.

Thank you for this video! I've been thinking of moving to Houston (I can do hot, but not cold) and all the other Houston videos look like a city I would never want to live in. Huge expressways, empty downtowns like in a dystopian movie, miles and miles of cement and concrete....no wonder Houston floods so much. Also a lot of ugly huge apartments/condo complexes right out of the old East Berlin w/ nary a sign of a small business anywhere. But here you see a normal city. Mom and pop stores, smallish restaurants, normal sized streets. Very nice, I like what I see.

Yeah this neighborhood is pretty nice. Check out “The Heights” too. More walkable than most of Houston.

Montrose is a mini city right outside of midtown and downtown. Houston is made up of several of the these mini cities that have their own personality. Montrose tries to keep that urban, eclectic, bohemian feel. Heights is another great one with walk ability. Now If Houston could connect these areas by public transit (regular bus), it would really set the area off.

Great job. You passed by two of my former residences and how I wish I was back in that neighborhood. Thanks for this, spelling check, it is Shepherd and Yoakum.

Amazing how much has changed here in the neighborhood. I have a similar video from about 14 years ago (albeit not as thorough), and it blows my mind to see what's been lost to time, even as I've watched it happen firsthand since 2007.

I'm from Houston but have never heard that expression about "strangest neighborhood". It's a great neighborhood, though. There are many truly beautiful sections on Montrose that I hope you can show in future videos.

Hard to believe there are big trees in Houston TX. It’s usually thought of as a tumbleweed kind of cowboy town. Interesting.

Nice that Texas still has Texaco around, I like the size and cleanness of the neighborhoods and parks. What time was this recorded? Never been to TX before but after seeing this, we'd like to go on a road trip and visit.

Only complain I have the streets need fixing and the fact people park on the right side of the road on a 2 way lane road but other than that I love the view of the buildings from far away.

Parts of the Heights look very similar to New Orleans regarding the home styles. Some of the Heights has styles similar to places like Charleston or Savannah. Those homes have been built mainly in the last 10-15 years and are quite striking in their architecture. Some sections of Montrose do look like New Orleans, especially the live oaks that create tunnels, but those sections weren't shown. It's difficult to show everything, though.

Kind of... The flatness and lushness give Houston a similar ambience of other cities in the Deep South then you have the random look of buildings and homes due to its lack of zoning law. It also kind of gives me a Los Angeles vibe for some reason 🤔. Some neighborhoods are just Anywhere, TX with a bunch of strip malls, cookie-cutter subdivisions and Whataburgers, which is the most prevalent aesthetics in the area. Some others look like somewhere in rural East Texas.

I still think that, despite this, Houston is one of the better cities when it comes to road quality overall.
@zachmatt3
@zachmatt3 2 года назад
I've noticed that almost all American cities, at least in the older parts, have bumpy road surfaces. It's especially difficult to maintain streets in cities like Houston where the climate is so rainy, with frequent flooding. The newer areas of the city are much better with regard to road surfaces, but are not nearly as interesting.
@joonkwon9303
@joonkwon9303 2 года назад
Honestly, I think Houston uses too much concrete for its surface roads compared to other major cities.
@michelleboatright1405
@michelleboatright1405 Год назад
Well the city has tore up most of our montrose streets .. and as we speak ( Woodhead/ hawthorne/ parts of west Alabama ) have been repaved and wider side walks ! They expanded Shephard drive to a complete 4 lane road from Richmond ave to a lil past Fairview
