@@barryallenflash1 yes! All good. It's difficult to have a favourite, but I have a soft spot for Graham Chapman's complete insanity, and Terry Gilliam's animation and appearances always bring a big laugh.
Remade now, Bicycle Repairman would be an incompetent wimp whose failed repairs had to be put right by butt-kicking Bicycle Repairwoman. And when no one went to see it, it would because those who didn't attend the cinemans were misogynists (among other things).

Saw an interview with John Cleese recently and he admitted that when they approached the "big wigs" about doing their show, they (the big wigs) asked what the show would be about. Well, John and the rest of the guys hadn't really thought about that, however the executives told them-"okay, you can do 'xyz seasons and shows' " THIS had never before been done for ANYONE! IF not for this we wouldn't have the Monty Python shows, so kudos to the studio execs for taking a chance on "the guys". This episode just shows how they can poke fun at ANYTHING and make it hilarious!!! We NEED more shows like this today....in 2023!

@@joeoak8181 The joke is that every normal person has "S" or superman, cape in this society, presumably they are super-men? and they are all excited and watching someone that can do something almost every regular person has done (certainly in Europe), fix a bicycle... As far as the bicycle men fighting com ies I don't know what that means but probably has some historic reference in the time the video was made...
@@Philcopson Sadly, he was defeated in a climactic battle with his legendary nemesis "The Tire Popper". Their battle raged for at least a handful of minutes, though onlookers would swear it was days, before they were both hit by a bus when they wandered into the middle of the street. It is only thanks to Bicycle Repair Man's valiant efforts and choice to sacrifice himself that our bike tires only go flat every now and then rather than slightly more frequently.

(Fascinatingly, "bicycle repair man's" initials are also those of legendary British racing team "BRM". It is a little-known fact that bicycle repair man - although a mechanical genius - was forced by his humble beginnings to leave school at the age of ten to start work down the pit. When down the pit, it was his job to install the drive-shafts on the near-mythical V16 BRM Formula One car. Bicycle repair man immediately recognised that no steel in the world could withstand the incredible power of the two-stage supercharged BRM engine, and during his lunch-break he immediately developed a nickel-chrome-vanadium-molybdenum-manganese-tungsten steel composite - (now known to the Universe as "Kryptonite"). He's not fighting communism; he offers his services for free and seeks no reward (not even praise), so if he's fighting anything it's capitalism (which would demand payment before fixing anything, but then making sure the bike would break down again, thus requiring further payment).
You're right. I had forgotten how funny this sketch is. I must look up a few more Python sketches, as a sure panacea for these humourless times we live in.

So surreally clever that this sketch has a populated civilization of Supermen, and one of those that Michael Palin's playing takes on the form of Bicycle Repair Man.
I was once asked how to watch Flying Circus, but only the good parts... I suggested that to see only the really good, funny sketches, it would be best to start at season 1, episode 1, then watch them all in sequence until you finish the series. Then watch the films.
Satan has a point. My cousin was in a whole series called 'The Paper Lads' in the late 70's and no-one's ever heard of it. Had he been the kid in Bicycle Repair Man he'd be almost famous.
Pure social commentary. People look on someone who can do easy mundane tasks as a super hero. It was funny then, now it's just worrying the amount of people that are just confounded "how am I going to carry this home and use basic tools to fix this? guess I'll buy a new one"
Accents......the Brits know that plural does not require an apostrophe. Sadly, I now know this particular spelling and grammar infraction has been going on for at least 12 years

The idea of superheros being regular people and regular people being superheros seems so simple but I'm surprised that Monty Python seems to be the only lot to make the joke 😂
From Michael Palin's diary of Tuesday 8 July 1969: “Today Bunn Wackett Buzzard Stubble and Boot came into being, with about five minutes on film shot around Ham House. It was exhilarating to wake up to the first day’s filming on a new show. […] by 6.00 we had quite a chunk of ‘Queen Victoria and Her Gardener’ and ‘Bicycle Repairman’ done.” So filming began on this sketch even before they had the final name of the show. Terry Jones, who struggled a bit with the letter R under the best of circumstances, could not really make a go of the American accent.
Indeed. I saw this as a kid and was disappointed the Supermen had no apparent superpowers (no Superwomen, notice) and a speccy fellow fixing bikes was 'special'. Took me a while to get the joke.
We used to have a Toaster Repair Man in our city. But during one repair, he accidentally stuck a screwdriver in a toaster that was still plugged in. So he's toast now.
