I don’t mind the Roland stuff but there is just something about the overall feel and textures when the Moog gear is working together. Thanks so much mate!
This Moog semi modular ecosystem is a really fun playground. Can you buy individual modules that are perhaps more specialized? Sure. But these modules are really compelling on their own, thoughtfully executed, especially for the price. But when built into a system they really shine, as seen here. If you have the space I could see just rolling with these and nothing else and being very very happy.
Damn, I’ve been wanting a similar mood set up. Then I had it in my head “ sell all electronic gear focus on guitar your getting older” I will get stuck on it and not play guitar for a month or 2. Now “ sell electronic gear for table o moog “ I need to delete RU-vid. Lol thanks for the review
I've never seen that many "damns" on comments for a single vid lol. For a reason! Omg this is really 🔥 Congrats on your whole setup and the way you can handle it. Big up!
This is the first of these boxes that's really piqued my interest. I especially like the ability to flip the filter/wavefolder order is a really nice, but also the flexibility of two voices and two filters opens up so many possibilities.
That jam at 38:40 is phreaking phenomenal. Love all the jams, but that stood out. And just when you think 3 DFAMs is enough... The jam with the TR8 makes me think my Drumlogue, some effects, and this thing is all I need for some great techno fun. Add in an Impulse Command and you have a techno beast trilogy...
hah I love the pure joy you experienced with Cosmic Family Jam, can tell you were having the best fun. Great demo... making me want to get similar setup.
@mylarmelodies - just adding to my comment, i have no modular setup. I have a Syntakt/Minifreak/AH+FX... and im thinking of getting M32/DFAM and now Labyrinth as a trio, just to experiment like i see you doing, do you reckon its a good move? or should i get something like Cascadia ? I'm keen to stay in semi-modular world for the time being. I just want to make noise similar to this vid!
Gosh a cascadia and a labyrinth would certainly be a thing. I was thinking about that exact setup. Lot of money of course but it would have every sound imaginable plus the sequences to go with it.
Moar Mysterious Moog Madness! This one is definitely one my wishlist now. Thank you for demoing these in a way only you can do. 👍 Edit: How can anyone not like a guy (and his jams!) that uses THREE DFAMs? That's so awesome...
I just got it today ! Hyped up! It's so cool. The first time i saw it i thought this is the most interesting semi in the moog set. Without a doubt, this one is funky. If you're into eurorack and generative sounds you're gonna like this synth. I wasn't expecting to get it on release day but i got 1 of the 4 units that store got in stock. Not to worry for those who want one, something tells me there's alot availability right away now. What's strange in my opinion is i never expected moog to release two new semi's in this series so close to each other. The spectravox is only official release appx. 2 months ago, now this. If there's another new model in 2 months count me out for now unless i hit the lottery. 🤖
Great demo!! Q: Do the selected bits and CV values remain the same when powering the unit off and on again? Same question for the Buffer. Are its contents retained after a power cycle? I looked in the manual and didn’t see an answer. Thanks!
Is there a way to trigger play on the labyrinth from an external synth through CV? Cause unlike the subharmonicon, it doesn't have a play input on its patchbay. Thanks.
Super big thanx for sharing your tutorial….it’s amazing what’s possible with the sequencer …mine comes yesterday…I have to learn more to find a way out of the labyrinth 😅! Best greetz 🖖👽
If only I could get one :) Ordered one in July, but still no firm delivery date. Latest estimate is 8 weeks from the order date. Very frustrating. No doubt it will be lots of fun when it eventually arrives.
Hey Mylar, great showcase :-) have you ever done a Studio-Tour Video? Love the "Mad Scientist Technician" Aesthetic of your frames and would be super cool to get an insight into how your Studio is set up and looks!
@@mylarmelodiesYES!! 😀Looking forward to it. I have one on pre-order here in Aus. Just waiting for store to get stock ......... now I want a Labyrinth as well 😕
Question: If you ignored the sequencer from the Labyrinth entirely does it still make sense as a great desktop synth for bass and bleep bloops? I prefer external sequencers from my DAW sending midi notes into the synth and affecting it from there. Not about to change my workflow so is another synth a better option? or is the Labyrinth perfect for this and just ignore the sequencer?
nice setup :) i have only half of it :))) labyrinth is interesting - sometime i'll buy it, but my moog-studio-trio is in another country right now... want to combine it all, with my grandfather toogether :)
Awesome education via some wonderful creativity! How much talking into would it take to do a Mylar demo of the Zoia Eurobro? ;) I've used the Zoia since it came out and now have the Eurobro. Just from my own explorations, it seems like there is some serious potential for what it could do in the modular world (of course, for which it has been designed). Anyway, just a thought (likely the first and last request you get for something like that - so feel free to ignore;)!
Great demonstration but I dont know if I am sold on the Labyrinth. The only of these devices I've kept are my 2 DFAMs. I feel like it doesn't do any one thing so well that I must have it, and with cool stuff like the Atlantix and Befaco Oneiroi coming out I gotta be choosy.
For me it’s greatest strength is the sequencers - because you have two and can freestyle ideas/modulation infinitely. I’d make it the centrepiece of a jamming rig
Always awesome to see you work these things!!! I just have a quick question though - would you recommend some kind of voltage converter for cv signals? I've been shooting off sequencers from my M32 to my Mini Moog and the octaves start to go out really quickly and I know it's related to voltage. Moog said they don't sell anything like it, but they do exist out there... I thought you be the man to ask for sure!!
Sounds like the Mini isn’t tracking pitch correctly over the full range? Not sure what the Mini should be able to handle but it may be a question of calibrating it?
@@mylarmelodies Thanks for the reply! Moog said that it is likely a discrepancy in volt per octave. I know the Moog Studio gear is 1v per, but I think the Mini Moog might be different?? If I'm firing off a sequence with smaller intervals pitch wise, it's okay. When there are greater leaps or a sequence over a larger pitch range, it starts to go out around the edges of the sequence I've programmed. I think it also depends on what key of the Mini Moog I hold down as that changes the sequence key too (apparently holding down a Mini Moog key is the only way to open the envelope to hear sound when patching into the external Osillarotr input).
Minimoog is definitely 1v/oct as well, but depending on how well it’s calibrated (as well as its innate range, I’m not sure what to expect depending on its age and best-case scenario) then yes you may find it’ll diverge in tuning the higher and lower you go. The solution would be to find out what the best case tuning capability of a Mini is, and then whether you can calibrate it (if needed). Same may go for the Mother too.
@@mylarmelodies The Mini Moog is from 2016… and could probably do with a calibration. Not sure if I should be the one doing it, depending how much is involved. I tech most of my own equipment. But I look at a Mini Moog and think “Don’t f&$@ this piece of genius up”!!😉.
I just snapped one up and I’m new to even semi modular ,can SEQ 1 CV output connect to my behringer 101 and play the sequence from the labyrinth on the 101 ?
Super dope! How do you mix all those moogs and FX? I am looking to create a moog set-up like this with some FX and maybe a sampler in there like a Digitakt 2.
I haven’t watched this yet so I apologize if any questions are redundant (I’m stuck in meetings all day, and all these videos dropped at once as someone else pointed out). I’m concerned with how terrible Labyrinth sounded from all the early release videos, and it wasn’t clear how this differentiated itself from already existing products in most aspects, like Subharmonicon’s sequencing. Questions… How well does this fit in with all the other semi-modular Moog synths? Can you use the Labyrinth as a master controller/processor in that regard? Taking advantage of the sequencing and wave shaping for the other synths. How long did it take before it started not sounding like ass, and is that effort realistic (or possible) for most people? This is probably the one I’m most concerned with, based on the videos I’ve seen prior to today. Like I can pick up my DFAM and jam on it with little effort after not having touched it in a while, for example. I love your channel btw, a lot of my interests were fueled by your earlier videos. Thanks!
Thanks for this!! So regarding how well it fits - It was originally conceived to complement DFAM but of course stand in its own right. It’s like a complex west coast oscillator/Easel but with generative sequencers strapped to it. As I do in this vid, I like the exact idea of it being a master processor, the thing you have right up front, and use to sequence 2 other things, while it ingests other waveshapes externally and runs them through the filter or wavefolder (or both). In terms of how long it took to get good sounds with - for me I’d say about an evening as I’m quite familiar with and predisposed to this sort of device, it’s basically what I like to make in a modular synth but in an off the shelf box, which is novel(!) It’s not complicated at all so I don’t foresee it being a struggle to learn (the manual is fantastic, have a look) but as with any instrument that doesn’t mean it’ll magically give up all its secrets immediately - this is a happy accident machine so will reward time spent learning to keep it “in the pocket” of sounding best and to jam and perform it, and learn to move from one useful state to the next with it. As you see in the “Heaven & Hell” section it’s interesting using the two paths as contrasting voices, and bouncing from one to the other with the Blend knob. Anyway yeah for me it’s unquestionably one of the most potentially useful of all the 60HP moogs, since it’s the one you could use to power an improvised live show most significantly! Hope you have fun if you get one anyhow!! 🙌
That's all well and good... but is it possible to get longer notes, more legato, with the Labyrinth? Almost all I hear are these staccato-like notes, often percussive. Want longer notes ambient... maybe not possible with that simple decay envelope?
You can set very long decay times to create big sustained notes, but they’ll always have a hard attack. However there’s a VCA input for each channel and wavefold and VCF cv input so you could apply external envelopes to it easily and create swells/soft attack sounds if you wished
Great stuff mylarmelodies. Do you think you would use this for house & deep house. ect? It ts alot of money for me to test buy and sell if it dont work for me Cheers
Ultimately the sequencer just spits out stepped voltages in key, so the style is up to you based on what you choose to hit record for - but the voicing could be seen as a bit non-traditional perhaps for those styles? It can make square waveish forms by overdriving the mixer, and it’s got a lowpass filter though, and I bet you might already have a synth with saw, possibly chord mode etc?
@mylarmelodies thanks for your reply. I might well have a punt on it then. You got some cool rhymes out of it. Im Scared though that if I get one, I'll end buying the other 2 you have connected to it😮🤣 They deffo bring more to the labyrinth 🤟
Great video from the Moog's best hype man! I've run out out of space in my rack and money in my pocket.... I have the studio 3 set already, and don't use the mother 32 that much over the other 2 and I have a mavis in there too, maybe an M32 swap for the Labyrinth?
That sounds sensible to me! You have Mavis to be “trad” sounding (and be sequenced by it) as well as give you more elements/waveshapes to blend in to Labyrinth
@@mylarmelodies overly smooth You know, I was totally over Moog, the spectravox was very underwhelming, specially given that I already have a spectraphon-shaped hole in my heart, but you totally sold me this thing. Now I've got to think what to do with the extra space on the Moog stands I've got. Maybe a second dfam, it's never enough
I dont know if you just have an intuitive sense of statistics or something but when I make music with randomized pitches like this it dont sound this good at all. Stuff like the metropolis or subharmonicon are more my speed(in spirit). Glad you're making good sounds with it tho.😢
Release a Standalone Polyphonic version with the Swing's Slim Keys, and call it a Proton+ (Proton Plus - because it's a positive charge particle). It would target Korg's MicroKorg & Minilogue XD serious.
