Daniel Fisher, Sweetwater's mangler of Moogs, demonstrates the newest addition to the Moog Mother Ecosystem, the Moog Subharmonicon semi-modular analog synthesizer and sequencer that brings all the Moog analog flavor with a rhythm entirely its own. First released in a limited run of 120 units in 2018, the Subharmonicon became an instant cult classic for its unique take on subharmonic synthesis and polyrhythmic sequencing. With two VCOs, each with two suboscillators and a four-pole resonant filter, the Subharmonicon produces creamy all-analog tones with basement-dwelling lows and scorching high-end. Its truly innovative sequencing capabilities use a combination of two four-step sequencers (one per VCO section) and a polyrythmic generator to create wild, erratic polyrhythms and evolving harmonic chordscapes.

Very intriguing and deep synth. Thanks for the run-through. That said, in impatient hands, it seems to be much easier to create noise than music. I get the impression that with some understanding of music theory, a lot of fine tuning, a midi controller and delay/reverb, this thing will really produce some amazingly musical sounds, in the traditional sense. Thanks again!

Nokan Music Don’t hope...... Just do it....I did, can’t wait for it to show up..... This thing is brilliant in ways people are only just getting. I run a kit that includes a Dual DFAM synced to Mother 32, so I can’t wait.. I show that kit on my channel, it’s about sharing stuff, I don’t sell anything or ask either. I just enjoy listening folks playing around with instruments for fun.

This is by far the best, most lucid, demonstration and explanation of the Subharmonicon that I've watched recently. At that price, though, it's not something that would be useful to me. Also, it seems like a lot of tweaking for a limited amount of fabness.

I would have been helpful to mention the inspiration for the Subharmonicon. Friedrich Trautwein invented an electronic musical instrument in 1930 called The Trautonium which used subharmonic oscillators.

The manual says the Clock can go from 20 bpm to 3000 bpm, which is 50 hz. I'd love to hear how things sound at that speed. Almost like low growls I'd imagine.

Help! How does the 4 rhythm knobs correlate with each other? Lets say you have the left most knob at 3 oclock and the second left at 12 oclock, both running seq 1, does the second knob divide the first knob, og does it add another division of the original tempo to the sequence? Cant wrap my head around this

Hi ALohne. Each of the four Rhythm knobs sends a "next step" trigger to either (or both) of the two Sequences (when either or both buttons are lit under each Rhythm knob). The four Rhythm knobs don't actually interact with each other (without any alteration via patching); it's that multiple Rhythms each send their "next step" trigger to the same Sequence, so... if you have two Rhythms going to the same Seq and (very important), they are repeating at different rates, you'll get a polyrhythm. If the two Rhythms are set to the same value, it will only sound like one, since they're both triggering at exactly the same moments. One other thing. Every Rhythm knob (when engaged) also triggers the Filter and Amp Envelopes. Since all six of the oscillators are sharing a single Filter and Amp, every blip from every enabled Rhythm knob will affect all six oscillators' filtering and amping together as a single unit. Hi Valdis Krebs. There is a Quantizer that can lock the frequency results of the two sequencers to either a 12-step (Chromatic) Scale, in either Just Temperament or Equal Temperament. It can also do 8-note scales (Just or Equal) that can be any mode (Ionian through Locrian) depending on what note you start on. Thanks for watching! -_Daniel_

Hi Mark. Each of the four Sub Oscillators can have their frequency changed individually by either knob turns and/or Voltage Control (sweeping through all of 16 "undertones"). Thanks for watching!

Well, I am not going to be kind with this. I 've watched many demos about this new subharmo and nowhere I could go " wow" that's a hell of a machine, don't get me wrong I totally respect Moog but here I don't feel inspired, it's just not my thing, it will make other one happy I guess.

Eric Balcon yes....I think the mother 32 sounds much better and has that mini moog sound and an aggressive edge , I really like this form factor better though and the sequencer looks fun but have yet to hear a demo that sounds great , moog must have not used the same oscillator build ......

JVMC - I was never interested in the M32, there are so many decent analog synths out there and most have two oscillators. But the Subharmonicon is way more interesting to me with the highly individual sequencer. Each to their own.

This sounds to me like a bad execution of a good idea. A bit too weird for me which certainly is saying something. Please do a deep dive and at least attempt to get something resembling music from this device. and I will reconsider my decision to pass this by.
