Hello guys and gays! I'm in a super happy mood right now because we know what 4 of the season 2 episodes will be based on!!!! Tiny lesbians Thingumy and Bob have been confirmed for season 2 episode 8 babyyyy!!!!!!
But I digress. Here's a little video of some clips and images (all of which I've posted on tumblr before so if you're from there you'll recognise them lol) of various cast and crew members discussing Moomintroll and Snufkin's relationship in the series because I'm a repressed bisexual who craves representation hahaa anyway
it basically looks like moomintroll has this inner conflict of wanting to stay at home with his family yet also wanting to go out on his own and explore the world (like pappa did in HIS youth); I personally feel like Snorkmaiden represents the former (talking about their future children, their relationship basically being very heteronormative and like a childish version of a stereotypical marriage) whilst Snufkin represents the latter with his free and wandering spirit, so I hope the series will end with Moomintroll choosing to travel away from home and thereby choosing Snufkin. guess we'll see. I mean the theme song (and basically every other song on the soundtrack) is about them two which feels /very/ significant.

EDIT: Hey! It's November now. I know people don't tend to read descriptions but I would just like to say that I don't think snufmin will actually become a romantic relationship in the series, at least not explicitly. I think it's kinda shitty that it has romantic subtext but I suppose they have the "excuse" that that's the same as the original books; though of course they were published at a time when LGBT+ representation, particularly in children's books, was completely impossible, so it's really not an excuse at all. I could talk about this all day and there's so many things to consider but I'll leave it there for now.

amberlovesanimation You got it sort of right but like Google-translate kind of right. The Swedish language is weird but I can try to explain, “Får” means in this scenario to be allowed. FÅR jag gå på toa? - Am I allowed to go to the bathroom? Jag FÅR gå på toa. - I am allowed to go to the bathroom. But sometimes it can be used forcedly, Like “will have to.” Om ingen annan gör det, FÅR jag - If no one else wants to do it, I will have to. Jag vill inte, så du FÅR göra det - I don’t want to, so you will have to do it. So the right translation would have, as OP said, be; “Moomintroll is ALLOWED to like...” But you accidentally took it as the other option. (: It’s all about the way one says it more than what one actually says in Swedish so don’t worry about it.

I got into Moomin recently because I was intrigued by Snufkin and Moomin’s relationship. I also started reading the novels and I can say for sure these two have the cutest moments. They think about each other, write letters ... it’s so wholesome!

There is many times snufkin cries in the 70's version, but he only cries when it comes to moomin. Like in the blood moon episode he cries when moomin risks becoming a vampire just so that snufkin won't be banished. And that is soo sweet, when they are walking home snufkin cries, and I cry.

As a Finn, it brings me joy for people enjoying Moomins and new fans getting into it. Moomins are my childhood as it has been for many Finnish and Swedish people

I think that this is so wonderful because it clearly goes beyond a "fandom" level of desire for that kind of a storyline (not that there's anything wrong with that). Tove Jansson was a bisexual woman who spent the majority of her later life in a committed relationship with another woman, and that part of her had to have influenced her writing. Thingumy and Bob, who were named Tofslan and Vifslan in Swedish (stand-ins for Tove and her then-girlfriend Vivica), were pursued by the Groke, who's metaphorical significance was referenced in the video, and Tove's life partner, Tuulikki Pietilä, was the direct influence for Too-Ticky. I grew up reading the Moomin series, and going through it again when I was a bit older, it stands out to me how much the themes center around love, acceptance and not just acknowledging differences, but welcoming and celebrating them. It is so heartwarming to see that the creative team for this show are exploring this part of Tove and the Moomin series, and that we live in a time where this beloved franchise can have certain parts of it finally brought to light! Edit: I'm sorry, I realize this comment is an absolute TOME, I just have a lot of feelings about Moomins XD

It should be “You get to like whoever you want to like” To “tycka” means to have a certain opinion or to THINK ABOUT, yes. But to “Tycka OM” means to like. It sounds like tho Snufmin is prob cannon, its supposed to end up as a tragedy. But these are new times were in, its becoming more acceptable to be who you are freely. They've put a spin on some things that push moominvalley apart from the rest of the adaptations so maybe this wont be a tragedy. Tbh what im most looking forward to is seeing Moomin find his place, Snufkin coming to terms with his want for both family and freedom, Snorkmaiden finding something to truly love that isnt all about someone else, and Little My showing her insecurities more often (I guess for sniff it'd be realizing family is much more important than any jewel in the world). I'd also like to see Moominppapa admit his mistakes more often, instead of covering them up with tall tales. Moominmamma needs more screen time individually in general cuz bless that women shes the best of em.

I grew up with the 90's show, and i shipped them so much, like before i even knew that not everyone shipped same genders :S Same with the Captain Sabertooth and his firstmate(Norwegian show) So imagine being so quiet about this and then finding TUMBLR just filled with my old ship ;-; fricking good.Thank u for setting this together

@@siiildie No, if it was pronounced "tåve" then it would be spelled "tåve". Swedish is a phonetic language. "Tå" is pronounced like "to-ah" and "To" is pronounced as "Tu". Therefore, "Tove" is said as "Tu-ve"

You should watch it! If you don't live somewhere that it's easily accessible, you can find it on sites like kisscartoon or something. That's what I did, anyway. The 90s show is also available on RU-vid under Moomins Official, I believe... Great shows. I finished season 1 of the 2019 version recently.

I don't think you will have to worry about that, honestly this fandom is so wholesome and i feel like people would be okay with what the show turns out to be. If we compare this to Voltron, where it definitely crashed and burned. There were several factors that led to this. The show kept teasing and teasing and queerbating that it left people furious. And honestly the fandom got quite toxic after season 3 or so because they were dead set on a specific ship becoming canon(sorry for the small rant)

I don't think that would happen in this fandom. I've seen most people respect and even join others ship, even though it would contradict another. This fandom seems to be filled with multishippers and respected rare pares witch I love. Although I have seen the tinyst bit of snorkmaden bashing it's not overly extreme and people go to defend her (which is great cuz she's bb) overall fluffy and accepting.

The Moomintroll fandom has been around since (At the latest) the 90's, LONG before this show came around. I think the only thing that can cause the fandom to crash and burn at this point is the franchise just ceasing to exist.

tbh it's not so easy in the UK, you have to have Sky or Now TV to watch it. I find it much easier to watch on a dodgy website online. But luckily for americans they are currently making deals to get it to air there as well

I mean I've read a few books so far, saw the 90s anime and moominvalley and saw a few comics panels and like. For obvious reasons Tove couldn't back them have said clear that yeah they are gay but it's also obvious to anime that Snufkin and Moomin are in love. That said I'll too cry tears of joy when they'll be clear canon ♡

the way he said that Tove was literally in a relationship that snufmin's relationship is supposed to represent sends. not to mention the context behind "suhde", it translates to relationship, but has more of a 'romantic relationship' meaning rather than 'platonic relationship' (you just say "ystävyys", ((friendship)) for that)

Ya know what, I don't even need Snufmin to been canon anyway. No matter what it is that they have, gay, strait, strong platonic relationship over periodically long distance, they will forever have one of the sweetest bonds of love, mutual respect and admiration ever shown in such a widespread cartoon. I think that's what Tove would have wanted most fundamentally of all.

ooOOOoooh, how this fell. Season 2 was relatively weaker than season 1 in my personal opinion, but the later episodes were absolutely fantastic. Though, with the fact they said they'd touch upon Snufkin and Moomin's relationship more, Snufkin only appeared for a specific few episodes, on in which Moomin was absent. I'd say they're just playing at our heartstrings by this point, but the season was just as good as always, even though it was still only 13 eps.

I also read the official Moomin comics by Tove Jansson and there was a comic strip where Moomin was really excited to see Snufkin again. Then Little My asked him "Do you like him so much?" and Moomin started stuttering and blushing. It's definitely canon

For those of ye who may not know,by the end of the books there's a part were moomin remembers snorkmaiden, but a "the girl with golden bangs" and she barely becomes a character that exists to moomin XD And a lot of hints and indirect quotes of moomin totally falling for snufkin. And even though we can never make it canon anymore,its highly acknowledged that tove definitely planned on snufkin and moomin to be a couple. But probably kept it vague for the fantasy. BUT INSTEAD TOTTALLY MADE TOOTICKY AND INVISIBLE GIRL I THINK?! CANON GAY CUZ SCREW THE LAW SAID TOVE AS SHE MARRIED A WOMEN PROBABLY MIDDLE FINGER UP AT THE FINNISH LAWS XD

I like it if the feelings aren’t confirmed and vague, there were always feelings implied for snufkin because Snufkin was representative of one Atos Wirtanen. I like ambiguity a lot, because the characters are concrete but they’re also the forces of Tove’s mind and representative of the people in her sphere so they don’t need to be set in stone or confirm it but just let it be what it already was to Tove.

First of all, thank you for putting this together, it's really interesting and helpful since I'm dwelling in this fandom again (after like, uhm, 20 years?!). It is a lot more grown-up than the 90s show, which I genuinely appreciate. But I think the "target group" consists of kids age 6-12 (?). They didn't explore the relationship between Moomintroll / Snorkmaiden very "deeply", so they can't do it with Moomintroll / Snufkin either. I would very much be convinced of the contrary, though. 🥳 *I will go down with this ship* 😜

The target audience is actually all ages; they expect the whole family to watch the episodes and discuss them together. They're definitely exploring Moomintroll and Snufkin's relationship deeply, having studied the psychology of the characters and everything, though I don't think they'll ever make it explicitly romantic.
