Moon Knight has never been an A-list title. In fact, it's a title that is regularly canceled and rebooted with a new creative team. But because it isn't a top-seller, Marvel Comics allows it's writers and illustrators to take more chances on it. This video goes over the changes each creative team made when they took a crack at Moon Knight.

Im goanna hate that shit so much. But it good because everyone's goanna be forced to then acknowledge the supressed egyptian wisdom thats been gaining popularity over the the last years. To be honest, i would personally guess thats why hollywood is even making a moonknight tv show, to make the genius egyptian theology seem like nothing more than fiction, because the egyptians (more particularly their precursors the sumerians) were the most advanced civilization we know of, but its been supressed

I have never been a fan of street level superheroes, nothing personal, I just like cosmic stories and space operas, but Moon Knight and the Question have been exceptions for me, I loved Lemire's run of Moon Knight and Vengeance of Moon Knight is one of my favourite stories. Id love if you covered The Question specifically Dennis O'Neil's run.

@@sergioruiz733 yeah I'd like to see the contrast. He did give a simple synopsis that the Question was essentially a tame version of Mr. A, but I think that left a lot to be discussed in a comparative sense with later incarnations of the Question
@jamesoblivion
@jamesoblivion 3 года назад
I've been asking for an episode on the Question, including the fantastic Denny O'Neill run. And I'll keep asking. Such a great character who's gone through some interesting changes. I will always treasure the meta-issue where Question comes to idolize, then reject Rorschach, after reading a copy of Watchmen that someone left on an airliner. Works on so many levels. And I like street level heroics to balance out the global and cosmic threats. Heroes like Moon Knight, Question, Daredevil, etc., excel at exploring different kinds of themes. And I'll throw Batman halfway into that basket, as I've never quite reconciled the Batman who fights aliens alongside the Justice League with the grim vigilante of Gotham. He walks in both worlds.

My favourite is the Huston/Finch run. Showing that a hero can be uniquely flawed, and self-destructive; struggling with mental health; and a strong supporting cast with a hero's love interest who is actually strong and independent, Crawley, the very articulate homeless man and Frenchie. The reveal of Frenchie's sexuality was also handled really well. Damn good run, and it is, in my opinion the best and strongest character study of the bunch. It always hurts when people don't recommend it, because they are put off by the violence - or it's not sleek enough. Moon Knight does have a pretty good (and reoccurring) rogue's gallery too, so I disagree somewhat with you there. Stained Glass Scarlet - a nun with an awesome design, whose child was a criminal that was murdered, and when she found out, she tried to fix the system through god's grace. Like a female religious punisher. I'm making a bad case for it, aren't I? Trust me, she's neat. Anyway, he also had Morpheus. A sleep-focused character who builds up his power the longer he's awake - with lots of nice nightmarish imagery. Black Spectre was a medival themed villain who represented the political side of veterans and judicial systems - and how they had failed the people. I thought he was cool, especially with how far he pushes Moon Knight. A lot of good stuff, is what I'm saying :)

Actually Moon Knight's favorite DISGUISE was Steven Grant, as Marc Spector no longer wanted to live under his true identity as it gave him PTSD/anxiety remembering all the bad things he did back in his mercenary career. Steven Grant was a way for him to feel normal, confident, and Marlene loved Steven Grant to death as he had the least to do with crime fighting.

As someone who claims Moon Knight as their be all and all favorite character, you have done a much better job with him then any other video I'v seen so far, honestly. It cant be stated enough that fans of Moonie HATE the bendis run, and this is a fandom that tends to adore all of his works. Also, you forgot to mention what is my favorite moment, which is when the spiderman villain 'the fly' the most F tier villain, breaks moonie's back, lol. 'A Box of Music for Savage Studs' is one of my favorite Moon Knight stories, its a wonderful one, and it is referenced in the Ellis run where he is fighting the ghosts. The music box at the end is a big call back to this story. That run is full of references to the old series.

Best single issue (and good for newcomers) is #25 of his original run, a double-sizer introducing Black Spectre. It's a really solid self-contained story and includes some early references to his mental issues as well (yes his mental issues were sometimes alluded in the first volume as well, though never as specifically as later).
@RamsTheNameCom
@RamsTheNameCom 4 года назад
@David B Jacobs .....Actually Moon Knight didn't have mental issues in that comic issue #25. Marlene only made a joke stating something along the lines of "Sometimes I feel you may have multiple personality disorder or are schizophrenic" and the Marc prominently denies it. He walks away looking back at his Khonshu statue and has a vision of it melting. This was meant to signify Marc Spector realizing his Khonshu statue was a fake made out of wax that Marlene and Frenchie built him to calm him down after his Statue was broken by Bushman. Marc Spector realized that his friends think he's crazy and don't take him seriously. No, issue #27 written by Steven Grant was the first time they introduce multiple personality disorder, mistake Moon Knight's costume as white, and made clear that Marc is Schizophrenic. But Doug Moench would come back in issue 28 onward to make sure people understood issue 27 was not canon....... though eventually it did become canon again by Charlie Huston in 2006. The Charlie Huston avoided giving him multiple personality disorder, only the characters around him believe he has this condition. However he did get Multiple Personality (due to a new writing team) around the end of Vengeance of the Moon Knight..... or in the Shadowlands comic that continues off from Vengeance.

I pretty much liked every MK version, to be honest. He's one of my favourite Marvel characters and I love how he changes depending on the writers. In regards to characters gifted by a particular run: there are a lot, but I especially adore how Venditti treated Hawkman. He took a character famous for his confusing origins and story and created a coherent narration which pretty much encapsulates every version and run and it made it make sense. Also it is a fantastic jumping on point and it has gorgeous art

What bit of the Huston/Finch run I've seen, I really dug Finch's art, specifically because he puts such dense anatomical detail into his art that it ends up almost as a grotesque satire of the beefcake violence of superhero books. Even before all the blood and gore comes out in that opening fight with Bushman, they're so ridiculously bulky and veiny that the muscularity itself is off-putting. It fits well with the realistic violence and mental trauma Huston is writing, that if people were as huge and powerful as superhero comics often depict them, they'd be horrifying more than aspirational in some ways.

Always liked this character, I have to agree, he's very versatile in terms of what you can do with him. His identity issues came through a bit (mostly as subtext) even in the early series, which made the later more explicit examination of his mental health feel less like an out-of-nowhere thing. If nothing else he's always had striking character designs, and he helped put Sienkiewicz (man, that's hard to spell) on the map as a talented artist with a unique style. It's nice to see that the old criticisms of him as a mere Batman knockoff have faded a bit, that was a very common complaint about MK in the 80s. Certainly lots of parallels to be drawn, but the character is deeper than an inferior imitation.
@RamsTheNameCom
@RamsTheNameCom 4 года назад
@Rich McGee .....I blame solely Bill Sienkiewicz for the stigma of Moon Knight being a BatMan ripoff. As Bill admits in a 2018 interview that he purposely redesigned Moon Knight to look like BatMan and pose like BatMan as a middle finger to Doug Moench. He hated working with the guy behind close doors and strongly feels Moon Knight is a lame and boring superhero. And all Bill wanted to draw was BatMan, but DC Comics wouldn't hire him since he's fresh blood. Even to this day, Bill hates Moon Knight but would gladly take a job drawing the variant cover for him (money is money). On the other hand of things, Doug Moench was inspired by The Shadow and Warren Publishing's Vampirella when writting Moon Knight (as brought up VERY breifly in a few interviews.... Like one sentence brief. He did the same thing when he dropped the bomb that HE spent two weeks working with Warren Ellis on the 2014 Moon Knight run..... Like come on Doug!!!! We want to know more about this!!!!). BatMan was also inspired by The Shadow aka The Knight of Darkness (The Shadow's nickname). So there's also that connection between Moon Knight and BatMan.

For Disney's show I'd like to see the mental health and magic oriented sides brought in as maybe he has two personalities relevant to Hero work. A street crime and shaman version. Maybe the switch off depending on the threat but the shaman version (which is tied strongly the Konshu) grows dominant around the full moon.

I would LOVE to see an episode on Bill Sienkiewicz. My favorite comic book artist of all time. When I got to see my name on the same page as his in a trade paperback, I was able to put down a giant unexpected checkmark on my bucket list. When I first picked up the DC Shadow comics in the 80s, his harrowing style forever changed the way I looked at comics. I followed it a bit after his departure, with Andrew Helfer's storylines still being heavy, gritty stuff that I wasn't used to, and the art by Marshall Rogers (with inks by Kyle Baker) was suitable. But it didn't have the nightmarish quality of Sienkiewicz's distinctive style.

Moon Knight does have superpowers. He has risen from the dead and he gets extra power when the moon is out. He also has a close relationship with an ancient Egyptian god. I know everyone loses their crap over Marc's mental health, but all that was retconned. At first it made for a neat way to get some super popular characters on your covers but now being a schizo is the main storyline in every run. I really prefer when he's just a badass taking out criminals....at night....in all white....so they can see him coming!

@brodysdaddy ....Moon Knight actually wears Jet Silver (it appears white when under direct light, just like the moon). I agree with you on "Mental illness being a cool one off, non canon series". But his costume being white, his over the top schizophrenia, and multiple personality disorder were all misinterpretations of his old comics by new writers. With that said, Moon Knight was always meant to have PTSD and Anxiety from his past live as a brutal mercenary. Which is why he favored his Steven Grant disguise over being Marc Spector. Since Steven was a normal, confident man who made his wealth through investing (a way for Marc to lie to himself as most of his fortune was made killing people). And Steven Grant had the least to do with Moon Knight, plus Marlene loved the way he looked and portrayed himself as Steven Grant.

Loved the video chris! Like you said, moon knight is super versatile! Disney is going to have a hard time nailing this one. They have to cover the 3 personas (cab driver, millionare and mercenary) the mental issues and the many suits and gadjets. Plus the secondary characters and main villain!

This is a super helpful video, I've always wanted to get into Moon Knight, but because he's so obscure I've never known where to start. The Disney+ show is one of the ones that I'm most hype for and I really want to do some research before then.

The Sienkiewicz Werewolf by Night story is a really distinct memory from my childhood. It was the greatest thing ever to me at the time. Probably had to do with the popularity of American Werewolf in London and the Howling on VHS at the time.

Glad to see my favorite comic book character getting some love. As to answer your question ComicTropes I'd have to say that I enjoy the Limer run, the Warren Ellies run, and the Charlie Huston run. When friends ask what's a cool character to start with while reading comics, I tend to recommend Moon Knight. The arts good and his stories are normally well done especially if you like the idea of a street-level superhero with a noir-ish background.
@RamsTheNameCom

@Samuel Collins ......The Jeff Lemire run was awful, in terms of being a Moon Knight comic. As a comic itself, it's a 5 or 6 out of 10. The writing was pretty bad and it kept forgetting it's own continuity. Especially in terms of Marc meeting Khonshu as a kid, which makes no sense to the character's history but okay. A better idea would have been diving into what exactly happened during his mercenary career that made him want to redeem himself by becoming Moon Knight. This was rarely brought up as to what brutal things he actually did during his mercenary career. So they could have easily said he killed children and raped women while providing flash backs to these events, remembering this gave him PTSD and anxiety. Which in turn made him crazy. Would have made for a far better story and would made sense giving the history of the Moon Knight character. Anyways I would add Doug Moench in between Warren Ellis and Charlie Huston. As his run was just as good, if not better than both of them combined. Also Doug Moench helped edit and supervise the Charlie Huston run as well as outlined the Warren Ellis run. So I guarantee those comics wouldn't have been as great without Doug Moench.

@@RamsTheNameCom I actully agree that without Moench's run Moon Knight wouldn't be, well, Moon Knight. Definitely wouldn't have the Khonshu mythos. As for Lemir's run I was never able to complete the run so I had no idea that he didn't follow through. I still thoroughly enjoy reading Lemire first volume, to each is their own my friend. Talking about bad writing though I completely don't like Max Bemis' run.

@@yellowmelon7494 The Jeff Lemire Moon Knight started off pretty good with potential but jumped off a cliff around issue 4 or 5 (the part where he first switches to Steven Grant). To put in perspective how bad Jeff Lemire's idea behind Moon Knight was, he said on Twitter a few months after his final issue was published that Marc Spector had a benign brain tumor since he was a kid. That's where Khonshu and his insanity stems from. I'll be making a few more Moon Knight related videos in the future. Discussing my thoughts on every single writer's take on the character. Next will be Jeff Lemire and Benjamin Percy's one off story. Benjamin Percy was meant to write a full Moon Knight series about Mr. Knight finding an Egyptain book of Death (think Evil Dead but with Moon Knight). But that got cancelled as a Marvel Editor announced that Moon Knight will be steming away from insanity and over the top violence in future runs. Khonshu will be definitively real and will play a big role in the Marvel universe as well as MCU.
@yellowmelon7494
@yellowmelon7494 4 года назад
@@RamsTheNameCom Ah, yeah the brain tumor idea doesn't seem like it fits inside a Moon Knight story. You mentioning Khonshu and MK taking a bigger role in mcu and the comic universe sounds pretty cool.
