The more I think, the more negative my opinion is becoming. I expect a lot from a luxury brand. I really think a recall would have been more acceptable. As mistakes happen. you can't take back the past but you can take back the polish lol. also I alerted all the reddit users who didn't know their bottles were thin!
Houston, we have a problem. I thought since I hadn't purchased anything recently, my collection wouldn't have issues. That's totally not the case. I took some good comparison pics. Hopefully I can post later this afternoon
@@WoWLinry Yeah with food product when something got recalled that was something I would imagine. We didn’t deal with any recalls, that amazing with all the product we put out. Food is so much different.
A recall might actually be counter productive. If people return the items they make break in transit. They could advise people to throw them out though.
@@WoWLinry I put an order in for 4 polishes and I got them today and everything was fine. The glass around the bottom is plenty think enough, around the top it’s a little thin. They come in a box and in another box, don’t know why there would be that much damage.
Companies usually only recall stuff if the product has the potential to significantly harm. Absent that, then they just compare the cost of the recap versus the cost of responding on a case by case basis with gift cards. Probably cheaper for them to just replace them in the future and deal with things when they happen.
I own exactly one Mooncat, so I was unaware of this situation until this video randomly popped up on my feed. Since all my nail polish is in makeup bags I went and checked and, yep, thin walled bottle. So I decanted my Mooncat. Couldn't have asked for a better coincidence, though. The name of my one Mooncat? Antifragile.
Yeah, it's good that they're changing their bottles but I agree that they should do more to address the defective bottles that are already in people's collections. They were like "we tested things and they're fine!" but that doesn't help the people who have super thin bottles that could still break on them. I might still shop black Friday but we'll see
I’ve just became a fan of mooncat and I like it, I haven’t had any problems so far with any of them. When I found mooncat I became obsessed with it. The short amount of time that I found it, I’ve bought over 40 bottles I haven’t even opens some of them. Sorry for the rant but I use to work in a bottling factory and we would have times that the bottles would break before they got packed that they would break, and a lot of them where from the same date or mold number. The lack of glass can really be a problem and hope they get it fixed before I get one. 😂
@@WoWLinry that’s too bad, how long has this been going on? I can only imagine what going on with them and the glass. I’m sure they aren’t a big company like where I worked, but that would be so expensive to through out. I don’t know what the company would be listed under but I was in food. And there is such a process to go through. I don’t know if they could pour all of the same color into something and fill them up with new bottles. With food you have to worry about expiration date etc. there have been times when they would put a whole production day of bottles and maybe would be on holds for days.
I don’t know that I agree with their assessment of how many of their bottles are defective in their inventory. Im very active in the Reddit lacquer community and the amount of reports Ive seen just on Reddit makes me question this. I personally only have two Mooncat collections totaling 12 polishes and one of mine broke in my hand when I removed it from the box to use it (from the Alice in Wonderland a year and a half ago). So this has been going on at least THAT long and Mooncat is only just NOW addressing it publicly? Thats not the transparency Id like to see from a brand of Mooncat’s stature and cost. They knew this was an issue for a year prior to their Lunar sale this year and STILL went ahead with the sale allowing people to buy thousands of potentially defective bottles; bottle people are reporting as having broken since buying during the sale. They should have pulled all of their bottles from production and replaced them as soon as they knew there was a problem with the manufacturer. They didn’t and people have been injured due to their negligence. Overall, this is not a good look for the brand and people have noticed. I spend a good amount of money on nail polish and I won’t ever be buying from them again.
Can I ask which polish it was from that collection? I LOVE Cheshire cat, and I would be DEVASTATED if this happened to my bottle 😥 Also, any recommendations on where to buy replacement bottles?
@@MrsSetsuna101I think it was Do You Play Croquet? But the colors don’t correlate to which bottles break. It seems to be random since the issue is with the bottle manufacturer. I don’t know where to buy replacements.
I guess I wasn't so lucky with their customer service. I had contacted them about several bottles I found with very thin walls. Mostly what I was looking for was compensation for new bottles I could decant mine into but they insisted I mail them back the defective bottles. I'm glad I didn't because I was reading several people who had done so and were only receiving partial refunds and having to fight to get the rest. Not only that but several of mine were limited edition or discontinued so I could not even buy them again. I was also told the bottles would be under-filled to help prevent breakage. Why would I go through the process of returning what I have to get the same iffy bottles but with less product now? I'm with you and that I'm surprised they have not issued any kind of recall because this whole thing has been ridiculous. I don't really care if they are finally getting around to changing the glass. I am just flat out done with Mooncat.
Omg I didn't hear about that partial refunds! I'm so sorry, what a terrible experience! You are 100% right to be done with them. that is a terrible way to deal with a customer especially with something that is limited edition!
@@WoWLinry oh yeah I read a few stories on Reddit about it and a good friend of mine actually had it happen to her. She's still fighting to get the rest of her refund. No clue what that's about when they have the bottles physically in their possession. The whole thing is just wild.
I have to inspect my mooncats when i get home! I saw someone had a bottle break on reddit a while back, but didn't check mine. Seeing these pictures makes me nervous though! I don't have bottles to put them in so I hope they're okay. My beloved Artemis' Deathkiss, please be safe😂
Good for them for doing SOMETHING but also meh. There’s so many amazing brands who are 1) cheaper 2) better quality 3) more honest with their customers… I have some beloved mooncat polishes in my collection but not eager to give them any more of my money atm 😩
Love how quick you got this video out! I hate that I’m so cynical and I want to be thrilled with their response but I just can’t. It seems like it’s taking a little too long for this to happen. I’ve also seen people having issues with Mooncat’s CS particularly regarding their offer to refund people who return old polishes. This whole thing has just really given me the ick.
Yes I would agree it has taken way too long! I did not hear about the issues with CS! geeeeeezzzz come on you release a defaulted bottle give a refund.
Great that mooncat’s PR has finally caught up to the abysmal way they were dealing with people at the start of the bottle crisis. Given the obvious quality issues existing with the bottles (extreme thinning), I hope they’ve finally beefed up their quality control and supply chain management. I’m not planning on buying anything from them for a long, long while.

Other consumer area than food have recalls too. Car parts can have recalls; baby items can have recalls. I don’t know why Mooncat won’t especially if the issue is so widespread.
I’ve never bought mooncat before (idk why… overpriced? Also their swatches seem misleading idk) but now I’m happy I didn’t. I agree there need to be a recall (especially if children end up using the nail polish)
I've had a lot of qualms with their swatches. They always read much darker on me with my real-world (aka not studio) lighting. I've found that I need to consider all their swatchers regardless of skin tone because I get a more accurate read. At least one of their swatchers manages to capture natural lighting better.
Like what testing? Dropping on a tile floor or on a pillow? They said you have literal hand grenades and rather than recall them they said nah, you good. Keep ‘em.
i hope they are able to actually show us the difference between the new and old bottles. i also hope they will let us know when the old bottles are gone. though i think some more transparency would be better, their response makes me hopeful.
Looking at my mooncats, they seem very irregular in their thickness, maybe one or two corners of the bottles are really thin, and the inside of the bottles are.....lumpy? IDK how to describe it.
I am so excited to hear they are working on a new bottle. I only have 6 Mooncat polishes (Hocus Pocus set) and the bottles seemed so flimsy/fragile that it put me off purchasing any more from the brand. Looking forward to trying them again once the new bottles are released.
I just checked my only three Mooncats and they have the bottle problem. Well, good thing I never used the Bonus Track bottle from the Holo Taco Remix collection as it will now be Flight of the Monarchs. 😂
I feel so nervous every time I reach for a Mooncat and some of mine are thin like that. I need to go ahead and decant them so I don’t have to worry about it. I like their response except I don’t think they should sell any old stock with the bad bottles.
SAME! I feel like even if you have to decant you should be granted a refund. you did pay for the bottle after all. this just sucks. I have no idea why they are continuing to sell the defective bottles....
I won't buy anything outside of newly introduced products for a good long while if i purchase any. I definitely think they have only done a bare minimum response. And i don't like that they only put the response in their stories so it disappears. It is a cya response that feels very beauty community ignore it and keep moving and no one will notice. But that only works for the influencers; brands who try that method get lawsuits.

All my Mooncat lives in a drawer by themselves, but I'm gonna go check anyway. I do have some open bottles in case I need to decant. I reeeeeally don't want to skip black Friday sale though 😂

Yeah, I'm definitely not buying from Mooncat/asking anyone to buy me Mooncat anytime soon. For the price of 1 Mooncat polish, I don't want to have to purchase extra supplies just so I can safely use it. I will wait until the new bottles come out and are proven not to randomly break.
Recalls can be totally done voluntarily by a brand! I'm someone who doesn't watch any news stations and isn't on any social media (bad mental health/illness worsened by it) so I signed myself up for recalls via the gov of canada website and holy crap. There are so many recalls every single day that just don't make it out into the public consciousness. Most times it's because stockists haven't put it into purchaseable inventory yet so it's easier to deal with. It's even funnier that I missed the Jif one while I had a jar in my cupboard (that was thankfully safe). 😅 I would definitely get behind a recall but man, usually cosmetic regulations are so strict that it's super strange that their QA didn't catch the thin walls, but there's a ton of reasons why that could be. Sample bias, for example.
While I love the look of many of Mooncat's polishes, they have remained firmly out of my budget range and I'm kind of glad for that at the moment since the temperature and atmospheric pressure fluctuations that happen in my area of Canada would probably end up causing a few spontaneous bottle issues. I'm going to share these videos with a friend who lives in the same general region who does own Mooncat polishes just so she's aware of the possibilities, if she's isn't already in the know.
This update with the additional pictures made me look at my bottles. I only started buying in Jan this year. Most do seem to be the thin walled- can see where the polish really extends into the corner. And can see when looking top down onto the bottleneck. My Power Puff bottles look better though. Maybe they will do a recall once they have replacement stock to swap. That’s a big undertaking.
Personally this seems like a reasonable response to me. By the way people on reddit are reacting you’d think Mooncat stole everyone’s socks and didn’t apologise.

I appreciate them delaying new collections in order to get them in new bottles, but I’m still wary of buying anything in the old bottles. I’ve never bought from Mooncat before, and I was planning on buying my wishlist on black friday. I understand how stressful this must be for the business owner, but I wish they showed more commitment to getting rid of ALL the old bottles. It seems like they’re really trying to avoid throwing out their whole stock, but at this point it might be best to cut their losses instead of continuing to hurt their reputation. I think if they’re still selling old stock by black friday they’re going to have a huge problem, considering how many people will put in huge orders on that day.
YES 100% they just need to get rid of the old stock because Mooncats biggest fans are aware of this issue and are now hesitant to buy anything! I don't want to be side eye my bottles and checking on them every morning
I’ve purchased a lot from them over the last 5 months. I’ve only had one bottle break during the shipping process. That was most likely due to the postal service . As soon as I opened the box I knew one was broken. I could smell it. Glass bottles run the risk of breaking. This is a no brainer. “Exploding” however sounds a bit questionable. Cracking, breaking apart, resulting in polish gushing out… sure. The pictures I have seen look like my bottle that arrived broken. It was cracked apart in a few different places. Just be easy with them. If you are worried wrap an old towel around the bottle when you open and close it. I put the nail polish that I am using on a tray that sits on my table. I leave it on the tray when I open and close the bottle. I’ve seen several people saying they have hundreds of bottles of Mooncat and have never had an issue with a breaking bottle, outside of one that happened during shipping. I’m sure this has been an issue with a small number of bottles and we have no way of knowing all the factors involved. We don’t know how people were treating and/or storing their bottles, etc. Unfortunately claims are not always accurate and it’s not necessarily due to people being malicious. They don’t notice cracks or breaks, etc.
Thanks for going over this major problem with Mooncat. They are on the pricey side so I’ve never pulled the trigger. I planned on purchasing this Black Friday but having second thoughts. Knowing their bottles have the potential to explode, break, or crack is very alarming. Nice to see they are aware of the problem and trying to correct it with future collections but they ought to do more. Recalls are expensive but as a luxury brand customers are key to their success.
I finally went through and looked at my MC collection and there is a serious difference between the ones from my very first purchases (2022) and the ones from last year (starting w/ my purchases in October 2023). The older ones have such a substantial pane of glass around the polish! I'm so bummed. I thought this was only an issue with bottles sold in the last few months, but nope. A big part of what I liked about Mooncat *was* the packaging, so I hate the idea of decanting the like, 10 polishes I have with the issue. On the other hand, I know I'll be so angry with myself if I end up spilling polish on my clothes or carpet. This is such a bummer. I definitely won't purchase anything from their previous collections again, honestly that's better for my wallet anyway.
also I think this is why they aren't doing a recall - they would be recalling all of the polish they've sold for almost the *entire last calendar year* - that would be an unreal amount of money, not to mention how mad people would be to lose their polishes. it would end the company, I think.

Thank you for informing people! I waited so long for the sale and hearing my bottles might break was very upsetting! I checked my bottles (only bought 2 so had to pay for shipping as well) and both bottles looked super thin. I don't use them often so I was so upset that they might eventually crack. Anyway, I contacted them and they responded immediately and said they will send new bottles to me. I agree they should do a voluntary recall. I never got the email from them warning about this. I found out from you! 💐
I had a bottle of Sally Hansen explode this weekend. Pretty sure they're not going to offer to pay for cleaning my duvet, though. I'm glad they're at least doing something to address the issue.
honestly my main issue is that it sounds like they're still gonna sell the old bottles... like um ok, so your super stan moon kitties can buy up the old stock and possibly injure themselves? I was thinking cuz i had a strong feeling they would just try to keep selling them and just fill new bottles as stock sells (at leastt they're being transparent abou it) ANYWHO my thinking is even though they never do sales, they should offer the old bottles at like 10-50 percent off and then have a disclaimer that these bottles may be defective, so at least people know. I'm so sure people would ttake the chance at discounted mooncat even if it's just 10 percent.
How thin is thin? Some of mine look a little thin on the left corner similar to what is shown. I moved cross country with mine and they seem to be fine though. I think a recall would be really not feasible since there is probably no way of knowing which batch the actual bottle belonged to. You might be able to track the nail polish batches and make a guess but that would be a shot in the dark. I think the response seems really quite good all things considered.
I don't think a recall would work for everyone, i'm from Europe, shipping something out to US is about minimum 30$ if not more considering this is fragile stuff, I have like 70 bottles...I'm gonna need to go through all of them now, before i end up with tis nonsense situation. My question is, why would they even use this bottle in the first place if the glass width can be so inconsistent, sounds like not enough testing was done for the rebranding launch. To be honest, I always found the walls sketchy looking. EDIT: i just checked my bottles and out of 70-80 almost 30 are sketchy looking with more than half of that " i dunno how they got here alive" walls. Guess what majority of the My Inner Apocalypse collection is amongst those. No wonder so many people had broken stuff when it launched. The walls are so inconsistent in that bottle design it would be better if they changed it completelly.
I love that you made a follow up vid on this topic! I just looked at my stash of Mooncat, and one of my Nightmare Before Christmas polishes "My Sandy Claws Outfit" looks really similar to the photos you were showing... I haven't worn it that much, but it concerns me now. They probably should consider doing a recall, but I'm not sure how they would go about it or how they would replace limited collections.
