The Moonflower Datura is a spectacular night blooming plant with fantastically huge white trumpet shaped flowers. Interesting spiky seed pods that produce loads of seeds to share. Huge hummingbird and Sphinx Moth attraction, delightfully fragrant in the evening. This plant is an annual in some area's, but acts as a deciduous perennial in Austin Texas for the most part. Datura the moonflower is my favorite witches' seed Iol I first saw this flower back in 2001.... I had just moved from Long Beach CA to Moreno Valley and I remember still being in love with the ocean and breezy cold full moons nights you get there; so to me, Moreno Valley was like a desert waste land.... one night during a full moon (as I always try to do) I was taking a walk through one of the many empty fields in this wonderful city; I'd have to admit the nights were beautiful for me because of the stars, when I see this flower glowing in the beaming moonlight lol it was so spellbindingly beautiful just siting there lonely in the quite moon-fall that I jokingly named it moonflower.... I only found out a few days ago that Datura my sweet little nightshade … is really known as moonflower lol I will always keep this powerful friend near me. we are one?

This is a classic beauty in any garden. The key is being a smart gardener. Planting them in the backyaard, or out of children and pet reach. Our house is deep set away from the street so we've grown some mixed in our flower beds for years. It's great for adding plesant perfume in the air when there are fires or other stinky smells in the aloft. It's always good to trim them with care while wearing gloves. Otherwise when left alone it's of interest to Anoles, bees, certain birds, and certain moths. Provides a lot of beauty for very little care in return.

Have to say I have grown this plant next to the front entrance of the house. You are so right about the fragrance.....it was lovely to smell when the large white blooms started opening up at disk and the hummingbird moths would come flitting arount those beautiful blooms. Ok, now I want to order some seeds for next year for my garden. Good video.

Thank you for a marvelous video. I remember having this kind of moonflowers in my life since I was a tot in the late 1950's in southern Illinois. My mother grew up on a farm in south Alabama and had two green thumbs that she used all the time. We moved to the Space coast of Florida in 1961 and always had moonflowers there then we moved to Denver and we still love them best. they've all descended from the seeds from Illinois. I'm glad your neighbor introduced you to them. I've always been addicted to their fragrance since I can remember.

I have a question, Lisa, What do you do with the seed pods? Do you wait for the seed pod to turn brown or do you harvest it and let it dry out.... Will the plant reseed without using the seed pod? This is the first time I've had a seed pod produce and I'm so excited! thanks

Informative video, thank you. I noticed that you mentioned the Sphinx moth is also known as the hummingbird moth, which is the tomato hornworm. The tomato hornworm is actually a Manduca quinquemaculata and the hummingbird moth (also called horn worm) is a Macroglossum stellatarum, two different species. Another note: your video loops at 3:34. All pointers aside, you've inspired me to look for the white moon flower. I have the purple datura seedlings that I sprouted (took over a month to germinate) but they are still small and I'm looking forward to some flowers to perfume my own yard!

I buy seeds for this plant on the internet every year...along with the purple and yellow varieties. Hopefully someday they'll reseed themselves. The only time my nasty neighbors have ever spoken to me in a civil manner was to ask what this plant was. Unlike you, we still aren't friends, as they resent the invasive milkweed I have in my butterfly garden!

I've just recently learned about Monarchs & milkweeds. Every spring I have some stray milkweeds poking up through my ground cover plants and my Hostas. I've been yanking them out every year. This year I'm not. I haven't seen any Monarchs however but I'm looking for them. I need to go do some research on milkweed & monarchs in Central Ohio.
@alliehamilton-calhoun162
@alliehamilton-calhoun162 7 лет назад
Thank you for deciding to keep your milkweed! If the weather is right, the monarchs will find it. There's so little milkweed anymore, It gets mowed over on the roadsides and ignorant people like I used to be get rid of it since it's a weed. I started out with milkweed vines that I would pull out whenever I saw them. After I noticed the caterpillars on them I stopped uprooting them. And that's how I became hooked on pollinators! Whenever I'm at a native plant sale I look for milkweed. I've branched out to provide host plants for other butterflies now. I've planted some spicebushes and dill for the swallowtails, and as much as I dislike tomato horn worms I leave them be; they eventually become beautiful hummingbird moths.

I wonder why the bees and hummingbirds go for the nectar if it is toxic. Very interesting.
@tchatterton
@tchatterton 7 лет назад
Toxins are not always toxic to all creatures. Chocolate can kill dogs yet we stuff ourselves full of the crap. And is it the nectar that is toxic or the seeds. Another thing to consider - plants need insects and birds to distribute pollen or go extinct - they use sweet sugary nectar to trick them into getting coated with pollen. If plants produced toxic nectar animals would shun the species and it would go extinct.

mcleod55 Sorry I am just seeing this for some reason, but moonflowers need a good amount of sun (typically 4-6 hours). They can grow in part sun but you may not get the flower production you desire. They like a dry spot (no wet feet) and suffer after periods of rain.

@LisaLaPaso
@LisaLaPaso 6 лет назад
Nancy Swan mine is bone dry and hates when it gets too wet. Allow yours to go dry for a while a see if it acclimates. Maybe you’ll encourage the roots to go deeper and not rely on you. The flowers are night bloomers so they will not live during the day, the rest of the plant is very drought tolerant.
@belahu
@belahu 6 лет назад
Same here in the Netherlands, my Datura grew by itself and it grows in the absolute driest part of the garden: sandy soil with excellent drainage just next to a southeast facing façade that heats up like an oven in summertime, where everything else fails. This plant just grows and shines without having to do anything at all...
@LisaLaPaso
@LisaLaPaso 5 лет назад
Nancy Swan , in Texas they do best with very little water. They cannot take the heat of the day of course and die back after late morning, but they thrive and bloom prolifically as moonflowers do. They open every evening around dusk and the Hummingbird Moths enjoy them tremendously, as do the bees.

I hope I really helped. I wasn't being sarcastic. I had a bunch of Moonflower plants growing in front of my apartment. The big Datura "Devil's Trumpet" type. I had been saving the spiky seed pods and replanting them every year just in case nature failed. Nature failed me twice two falls ago - I had a serious health issue that kept me bedridden and somehow none of the pods germinated. I just happened to find a website selling them this past winter and ordered them. Just this week two of them are pushing out of the dirt. I'm trying two kinds - the "Datura" & the smaller more vine like "Ipomoea" or Evening Glory Moonflower. I hope I have that correct - I'm a very amateur gardener - I just think these things are cool.

My Moonflower bloomed lastnight but when I went in the morning to look....the whole flower shriveled up from the sun :(

Brianna Williams Moonflowers are night bloomers and will not survive the day. They typically bloom from dusk to dawn to any daytime blooms are a gift. I use moonflowers in "moonlight gardens" or near patios and places people will be sitting in the evening or early morning hours for just this reason.

how to grow from seed?
@para-mentischannelbypiggsy4240
Duy Nguyễn with not much soil on top and plenty of water. It can be a little hit and miss but once they start growing they are impressive.
