This is the Moorooduc Hwy/McMahons Rd level crossing in Frankston, on the Stony Point Line, with footage I took in December 2016, and February and August 2017. The Stony Point Line is the only non-electrified line in Victoria operated by Metro, which is why all crossings have wishbone gates and either Westinghouse hybrid bells or General Signals E-bells
This crossing has:
- Two Westinghouse Hybrid bells. Both bells are programmed to sound continuously until the boom gates rise
- Westinghouse cross-arms and marked Westinghouse lights on all the crossing. All individual signals have unmarked bases
- Westinghouse boom gate mechanisms with Westinghouse bases
I visited this crossing 4 times and took about 50 minutes of footage, as I had a lot of trouble filming the boom gates operating on cue

What a great crossing! I've seen this crossing in action rather a few times when i lived in Frankston for 4 months last years and i noticed that the lights have a bit of trouble flashing right when the crossing first activates

Yeah they do a bit. That seems to happen at a lot of crossings around Melbourne

Thanks :) It's a big crossing. It's one of the most Westinghouse crossing's I know of

Interesting how they have multiple "Stop on Red Signal" signs on one signal on both sides. Great video!

Yeah it is a bit weird, they really want to drive into everyone's brain that you need to stop on the red signal haha. Isn't it already obvious? Thanks

@@stuarthunt101 I forget when this crossing was upgraded to incorporate traffic lights but I recall this crossing previously being as simple as the two booms and two sets of flashing lights on each side. The lights on the median strip were removed as part of the upgrade but can be seen here: www.westonlangford.com/images/photo/119109/

They should remove the trees and make a bridge and while the crossing is still there, it would be cool if the bell is changed into a e-bell

Awesome Video Stuart! Question: On top of the signal with the lights, traffic light and crossbuck, there is a white thing that looks like a bell, what is that?

Freedomtower Productions it’s just a cap that the electrical wires for the traffic lights sit in. Most intersections around Australia have these.

I found a picture of a train using this crossing in 1993, and the crossing had completely different gated signals. www.westonlangford.com/images/photo/119109/

Woah, it had lights in the median strip. I bet it had teardrop bells too. Must have been before the road was changed to Moorooduc Hwy... ah i don't know the history of the road

I’d say that actual gated signals were the same but the crossing wouldn’t of had the traffic lights and extra gateless signals along with the cantilevers. The crossing was still listed as gateless in 1987 and probably got gates a few years later . It’s likely that one of the teardrops from the gateless signals was reused if they gateless crossing had a teardrop. The old median signals were probably ripped out and replaced Ed with the cantilevers when traffic lights and a pedestrian crossing was added . When ever that was I’m really not sure

Hi Stuart, I presume you called the road Moorooduc Hwy because you saw it on Google Maps (just guessing), however a lot of locals still call it McMahons Road, so maybe add McMahons road to the title of the video. Cheers.

Yes I did call it Moorooduc Hwy for that one reason, so thanks for that info. I've added it to the title and description
