@@BuzzLOLOL I know the manufacturers run these new motors with aluminum heads etc. Run A little warmer, wonder if that would have made a difference and maybe a single plane intake? No expert, just wondering!
@peteloomis8456
@peteloomis8456 3 года назад
@@donaldcoalson4347 The aluminum heads run cooler especially in the combustion chambers so it allows you to run more advance if necessary & also allows you to run a higher compression ratio piston without pinging & detonation problems on pump gas . I think the dual plane intake might be choking off power as well & a bigger cam with more duration will help it make more power as well but who knows if the owner is willing to swap out the cam for something bigger . He could go with 1.6 rockers to try & get more lift out of the cam to work those heads more if they weren't used on this build already but changing to a 1.6 rocker only affects lift not duration . It seemed to me that also this engine wasn't really spinning that high of RPMs shutting down under 6,000 to me it looked like which is strange being most of the 340s will rev right to 6,500 or more . I am kind of disapointed in this build because he's just under 400 hp with all this stuff on it when a buddy of mine just dynoed his 68 440 4 barrel engine he basically did a mild rebuild on for his 68 Plymouth GTX convertible that just was bored over .030 stock 906 heads done with new valves guides & seats but no porting or over sized valves or bowl blending but used a dual pattern cam that wasn't much more than what it had stock with the lifts & durations & just a edelbrock performer intake through the stock exhaust manifolds & it made 400 hp & 460+ torque down at 4,200 RPMs after it's break in & the rings seated so something isn't right with this 340 . I figured maybe Nick would have tried a spacer between the carburetor just to see if the extra plenum area would help with the hp or not because some times it does some times it doesn't but maybe that's part of the next video 🤔 .

Biggest difference would be the huge headache of setting up and balancing 3 carbs, and the crap driveability when you can't
@peteloomis8456
@peteloomis8456 3 года назад
Problem is now the good intake manifold companies have big single plane intakes that flow better than the 6 pack set up as well as some dual four barrel stuff only using 1 big carburetor which is not only cheaper to buy but also easier to tune & stays tuned better than a multiple carburetor set up . My buddy had a 6 pack on his 69 440 charger back in the late 70s & it was a pain in the ass always having to adjust the mixture screws & getting the linkage & carbs synched after only a few tromps on it either at the strip or hot rodding it on the streets I remember . They look cool but back in the day the mixture screws would often loosen up once the cork seals went bad that helped seal the mixture screws off on the float bowls then it wouldn't idle right plus the linkage would get worn out & they could be more work than it was worth but they sure looked cool especially when at the gas station checking fluids & guys would come up & look at it & ask questions about how it performed which wasn't bad but if not kept in tune it could hurt you in a race as well as drivability.

*NICK!* Needs more RPM'S, my man!! Just sayin' - it shouldn't be "all in" at that speed with those heads and that cam. Just my two cents... Trivia time, Mopar guys: Other than the 426 hemi itself, what was the only other performance engine design that came out of Chrysler Engineering to never have a more "pedestrian"/regular service engine as an origin that it came from? Answer: The 340. There were no "passenger car" or truck versions of the 340 - it was always a performance engine, from the get-go, whether in Magnum or T/A versions. I predicted 435 HP and 415 lb.-ft., was close on torque but Eddy heads let us down on HP... those heads don't flow enough to match up well with that 245 degrees duration at .050" lift '500 HP' cam !!!

@@BuzzLOLOL I defer to your apparent expertise there - but when Nick put spacers under the rocker shafts he got the HP he was after, so the heads must have had that much in them. The mistake people make with the Edelbrock heads is that they're opyimized right out of the box. They aren't - just like any other head, they need some work to realize their potential.

@@moparedtn - Shims under rockers are just to get the valve lash correct... if shims give power, then something was wrong... or the correct length pushrods could have been used...

@gerdesoto262 3 года назад
Hey Nick, I have a problem and DON‘T REMEMBER HOW TO FIX IT, Because it has bend 40 years since I fixed the last one. The issue is how to fix a carb BOIL OVER when engine is running or not? Where you got fuel running out the top of the carb. There is a spacer adapter between the carb and the intake because the carb wouldn‘t fit otherwise. And its a new carb to go with the problem. Then the owner of the car thinks close off the intake exhaust cross over. I DON‘T AGREE WITH THAT PART. NICK LET ME KNOW IF YOU HAVE A ANSWER HOW TO FIX IT

What is 400hp after you put water pump, p steering, Alt, and ac on it. ? And I thought that was optimistic. Heard lifter rattle when first fired. A friend just got an Un-finished machined COMPCam he had to send back. Found during build up. The state of parts nowadays is gettin sketchy.
@nickpanaritis4122
@nickpanaritis4122 3 года назад
Tom. The noisey rockers is due to the lifters taking more time to fill up with oil. I had primed the oil pump and rotated the crank for a while on the engine stand before putting the engine on the dyno. From what I see, running the engine does the job of filling the lifters 100 %.

how do you know before a build if you need shims?
@nickpanaritis4122
@nickpanaritis4122 3 года назад
Princess. If you plane the heads, and deck the block, you get more preload on the lifters. By adding shims under the rocker shafts , it raises the shaft and therefore decreases the preload.

For that manifold, carb, heads and headers your peak power should be over 6,000 rpm. Maybe the cam is too small??? My stock 340's ran up to 6,000 rpm. My drag motors would go 7,200-7,500 rpm with stock heads! That's with a roller cam but you have all the goodies for 6,500+ rpm. Seems awfully flat in power?
