@@BuzzLOLOL you are wrong. rpm heads in stock form flow 240cfm @ .500” lift and 250cfm @ .600” lift. Setup was over 10.5:1 so duration was not too much, also its a small block and still made peak power pretty low in rpm range. If this was solid cam, and good adjustable rocekrs were used results would have been much better. Also I believe 750cfm is what factory put on 340. I have experience building 340ci small blocks and usually use 850cfm carb with good ported heads and bigger cam.

The 2 plane intake was killing the power number. I was sure when the camera went to the carb gaskets and spacers, that you had seen the light LOL. Single plane intakes with good carb and spark tuning, can make very good bottom end without killing the top. It's all in the combination. Great persistance!

Love the dyno videos Nick, but one question. Why the tape on the timing light wire? My guess was 380 hp, I was low. Best way to start my day, Nick`s video and coffee. Chevy guy here, but love all old muscle. We grew up in the same era Nick. I`m 63 now, been wrenching on my own cars since I was 16. Next job is a trans swap with new cooler lines on my 91 Silverado, had my 700R4 rebuilt after 300,000 miles(finally gave up the ghost). Got a used one last august now it lost reverse, so I had the original one rebuilt better than stock. Was not cheap, $1750.00 us with converter. 3 year 100,000 mile warranty. Keep up the great work Nick, I learn something from every video. Stay safe, God Bless.

I predicted 435 HP and 415 lb.-ft., was close on torque but Eddy heads let us down on HP... those heads don't flow enough to match up well with that too big 245 degrees duration at .050" lift '500+ HP' 7.000 RPMs cam !!!

Wow Nick that coffee went down perfectly after seeing you had made your goal of 400 and hey glad you got the oil leak sorted also. That is one sweet sounding 340 and it sounds like you might have been spot on with the new carb after adding the shims. Thanks for yet another top video Nick, George & Leo and hey great to see Manny's trick worked aye! Stay safe guy's.

In order to get the best numbers, it was routine to tear down a fresh build, and hone the cylinders again, as now a pattern was developed, lap the valves in again, new bearings as well. 2 tenths quicker sometimes in Super stock racing. Of course not practical in a street car

If your timing and jetting changes aren't making any difference in power, the choke point in the system is elsewhere. That means there's a restriction somewhere. Those heads should be good to about 425 hp, and so should the intake. So you might need more cam, or 1.6 roller rockers for a bit more lift, or 1 and 7/8ths headers, or less preload on the hydraulic lifters. Maybe shim the valvesprings .020 or so to delay valve float. Just my thoughts.

I still remember my first experience with a 340, back in 1979 my uncle bought a 318 with a 4 barrel carb for his dodge pickup truck. He told me he couldn't believe how much better it ran with a 4 barrel carb and new engine. I was a teenager and just learning, I asked him what the engine came out of and he said that old Duster behind the garage, I went and looked and it was a 70 340 duster! I told him it wasn't a 318 it was a 340! He kept that truck for year's, I wish I'd got it before he traded it off! Great to see the 340 hit those numbers Nick! Still good numbers!Thanks for sharing!
@donellmuniz590
@donellmuniz590 3 года назад
Even if it came from a 340 Duster, it might not be the original engine for that car. Someone may have kept the 340 and thrown in a 318 before selling the car. The only way to know for sure is to read the side of the block, above the freeze plugs. All SB and BB Mopars have the ci cast right into the block, as well as the casting date.

Video's followup comments: re- rocker shaft shims and lower temps... I can maybe see the shims taking a tiny bit of load off the engine with the minute difference in spring pressure... MAYBE... but I'd expect the lifters to pump up and make up for the slight difference. I'd wager that the lower temps and extra break-in time would have loosened things up a bit to help pick up 3-4 hp after a few more pulls.

In this day and age, if you believe the magazines and tv shows, 400 hp should be a piece of cake. But I'm sure the owner wants it to have decent manners, driveability, good vacuum, etc. More cam might mess that up. But those new Trick Flow 190cc heads should be good for another 30 or 40 hp, with no penalty other than cost. And it's a shame the guy didn't request a stroker crank. A 408 will stomp a 340 every time.
