I like how she mentions at the end that she was so afraid of losing another baby, that she forgot to drink and smoke and THAT'S why Clay survived. Yeah, a real miracle right there.
At that point, it's really a miracle. I mean, she didn't stop for any of the ten kids/ten years before and then, just, poof, she finally took a pause for 9 months? A neglectful person suddenly behaving properly for months after years of being unable to control herself is more miraculous than a medical miracle.
@@animefan2454 I would say it’s not her fault but she was smoking. She should’ve known not to smoke unless it’s based on a time before people knew smoking was bad for pregnancy.

@@EpicFableBean I mean ultimately it was clays fault for staying that way, but you could also blame it at the fact that he had no support system. The journey between clay and orel are very similar. Both were born in bad households, but orel at least took all the bad things as lessons that made him better while clay stayed a terrible person.
I feel the same way. The world is a meat grinder and our lives are so fragile that in a moment our worlds can be turned upside down with no way to escape and we only have an illusion of having control over our lives not realizing that its solely based on luck, circumstance, and people willing to allow up to move up in the world. A lot of people say this show is religious/Christian criticism. But moments like these make me think it's more a show about generational trauma with an emphasis on religious trauma.
The fact that she never realised how she originally treated her life during those past pregnancies with the drinking, smoking, and excesive activities (if you listen carefully she mentions activities like horseback riding, riding roller coasters, and jumping on a trampoline) for being the real causes of the miscarriages is especially shocking. Along with the fact that by devoting and distracting herself was she able to LUCKLY get successfully pregnant considering the damage she must have already caused to her body.
@@rosesweetcharlotte Not exercising wouldn't have killed the baby, maybe not eating would but even then it would've been possible to carry the baby as long as her body would handle it.
Horseback riding and trampolines don't cause miscarriages. Falling/physical trauma can cause that. It's fine as long as you're not like obviously racing 60 mph. And there is no evidence or history of rollercoasters actually causing miscarriages. Do you think cars, trains, and planes also cause miscarriages?
Y’all need to understand that during this time period smoking and drinking during pregnancy was not only a normal thing to do but was encouraged by doctors
@@creqmpufff3069 to be fair, although it's of course not true I can see why they thought that because even now people with for example chronic pain are advised by their doctors to smoke once in a while as it can soothe the pain, it also helps people with eating disorders get an appetite. I mostly feel bad for her because Clay was born in 1955, and his sibling would have been born before. But smoking wasn’t considered dangerous and actually encouraged until 1964 (idk about drinking or the rest). So I just feel like if she just knew it was bad she wouldn’t have done it

@@phucdatbich7333 But how old IS Clay? And honestly that kind of thinking is idiotic. Kids understand a LOT more than you assume, and she explained it in a perfectly age apropriate way if not a little tone deaf. The fact his siblings were not born alive is NOT what Clay can't accept, it's not being the one and only in EVERY capacity that has him upset. You don't need to tell your kid the dark details of everything, but you are doing essentially all children over the age of five a disservice by acting like they can't understand.

To be fair the industry even had doctors get paid to state that smoking was healthy sometimes it was even encouraged whose to say some of the drugs they administer now aren't entirely influenced by money and whatever the affluent wish to follow
It didn't help that the renowned OBGYN Alan Guttmacher (who went on to be president of Planned Parenthood) was advising women to smoke during pregnancy.
@@maggiequinn. They STILL advise women to smoke while pregnant if they are already smokers. Stopping CAN cause a miscarriage, as my aunt was told by four different doctors. yeah, finding out you weren't going to be an only child and that you could have had siblings, or that you wouldnt have existed if it hadnt been for them not making messes you up a little.

Él otro es muy débil y apegado a mami por eso nunca nacerá ni crecerá ni se desarrollará. Nacemos para morir. Bueno, seria para vivir nuestro momento, dar gracias a Dios.
So Clay was born only because his mother was so busy praying for her 11th child to be born alive that she didn't have time to smoke? Damn that's depressing.
Is it me or the message is the adults on this show are messed up because THEIR parents are even more messed up! It’s a miracle Oral broke the cycle of bad parenting!
the most depressing part is that clay is the only child survived but his siblings are not and since his mother death his father hated him but not worth slapping or hit him he married to a beautiful that led him drinking and fell in love with a man but broke his heart he is doomed from the start
Well he married because a beautiful woman lead him to drinking. ANd the realization that he'd lost his freedom and dreams because he was married kept him drinking. The lesson. Marriage and parenthood for the wrong reasons are basically poison.
That scene hit hard with me. My mother miscarried 5 times before I born, then was blessed with twins. My umbilical cord strangled my brother to death in the womb and my shoulders were wide enough to prevent me from coming out the natural way. She had to have emergency C-section to get me out. She was always sweet but strict with me. Life is bizarre with how it can screw you up, but its not always bad. A man missing a finger appreciates the 9 that are left more.
Some say that Clay's mom was horrible but considering the timeframe and how she talks, I think she just didn't know that smoking, drinking and certain physical exercise lead to miscarriages
His mother was just unaware of how her dangerous activities caused the miscarriages. She didn’t know any better. Clay was always horrible and acted bratty and was only upset that he wasn’t the only kid his mom was pregnant with.
they used to think cigarettes were healthy so... we cant blame her for smoking then. she probably smoked thinking it was helping because they believed smoking was "healthy".
The worst part of this scene is that Clay’s mom thinks that her praying is what allowed him to be born and not her stopping all the activities that you’re not supposed to do while pregnant. Edit: auto correct turned Clay to Carly
bruh you can see arthur puppington slowly going further away as the pregnancies went on...i feel like the look on the father's face in those pictures says it all. he knew the stuff she was doing was hurting the babies but he said nothing....
People in here talking as if this was the breaking point for Clay. But I'm sorry you need to finish the episode to fully understand why Clay is so far gone. Spoiler: Because of this little stint that made him feel worthless, he pretends to die and gives his mother a heart attack. This in turn leads to his father calling him worthless to the point of saying hitting him is "not worth it". So Clay starts to act up, simply so his father will hit him. Clay started to associate love and self worth with violence, because the only way his father acknowledged him was through corporal punishment.
I also had 3 dead siblings and when I found out about them i really felt sad about them and i imagined how me and my other siblings life would be like it's just sad RIP
I haven’t watched this far in mind you but this is, I haven’t experienced this so I don’t know how this feels but I had a friend that was born because their older sibling was a miscarriage They felt unwanted, they felt like they were the replacement, and that was with one sibling beforehand so imagine that but so much worse
That really isn’t fair. People can’t help miscarriages. They happen and they’re traumatic. Their mother’s miscarriage has nothing to do with them. Their mother wanted a child, tried, and eventually got one. They aren’t a replacement.
I guess it depends? A lot of people I know just really wanted another baby after a miscarriage. Yes, that was a "replacement" but they did really want them. I don't have kids, but I feel like if anything happened to one of my nephews I would probably want what would technically be a "replacement" child. Sure, it wouldn't be the same but it just sort of feels like a natural thing to want.
I don't think people are getting the point of this. Clay isn't "sad" or "mad" because he found out he had dead siblings and she never told him. He's mad because he thinks that he wasn't her "precious only-ever". He's throwing a tantrum over supposedly not getting the amount of attention he wants despite being absolutely showered with love and affection by his mother. He's a spoiled brat. That's why in the next clip when he pretends to kill himself his father immediately knows his antics. He's a piece of shit. He always has been.
people are failing to consider while, yes, smoking and drinking while pregnant was normalized and even encouraged by doctors, idk if rollercoaster rides, horseback riding, trampolines, or practically starving/dehydrating yourself was encouraged tbh
This scene really goes to show the early narcissism of Clay, not only does he feel a sense of upset at not being an only child in his mind he takes it seven steps further and decides to cause the trauma that killed his mom and ultimately leads to his future of bad parenting and substance abuse
If I watched this show as a kid this could have fucked me up. I was okay with Aqua Teen but something about this show made me not want to watch it until I got older, and holy shit was I right.
I found out both me and my sister are rainbow babies when my mom let it slip. There were one baby that died before each one is were born. She was the second attempt and I was the fourth. I mentioned this to my mom years later; and she completely denied it ever happened. She’s known for gaslighting though.

Wow the funny thing is if she hadn’t smoked and drank, those other babies would have made it. Her dialogue that Clay is canceling out says it all. She couldn’t drink or smoke with him because she was so nervous and sick, she couldn’t socialize or really even eat.
I wonder what Clay would have been like if at least ONE of his siblings survived, given the fact that he desperately wants to be the center of attention.
it’s so damn sad. his mom babied and spoiled him under the belief of clay being a “miracle child” whilst effectively damaging her body with cigarettes and alcohol to the point of having 10 miscarriages. and the dad, while obviously the more sympathetic of the two since it *was* clay’s doing, refused to show him any love and resorted to slapping him at any chance he got. clay was already fucked up since the beginning, and after his mom’s death, it was already way too late to save him.
My stepsister smoke, did drugs and probably drink while being pregnant. My nieces looks normal and healthy but it still too early to say, I pray that they don't have disability or any health issues down the road.
Stuff like this changes kids and makes them evil and bitter but it’s our job to change that or to at least change ourselves Don’t let the past decide your future Be different Be better
People of a comment think that this is what messed him up I actually think it's the opposite I think it messed up the parents. And he later became "the special child", it reminds me of Jeff Warren's the prophet the FLDS. When children are brought up as literally God's gifts, they tend to develop narcissism. Because the parents put their kids on a pedestal. Also this would have been before the ages of fetal alcohol syndrome and people knowing that cigarettes are bad. Fun fact the Nazis knew how bad cigarettes were back in world war II.
I think for the most part Clay was flawed as a result his upbringing but likely moved past it as he got older until he met Bloberta and that’s ultimately what made him the way he is, not to say that he’s a saint as he didn’t make any effort to change his life if he was so unsatisfied with it.
He never had the skillset or life experience to work on bettering or changing himself. He feels trapped with no real sense of agency due to his obligations to a wife he doesn’t love (and who probably never loved him) and children he never wanted, and lashes out at everyone else for his inability to move on from his past.
Kinda ironic that clay became an alcoholic, just like her mother before quitting smoking and drinking in which caused himself to survive only to inherit the habit that killed his unborn siblings
The time period here was in the 50s right? And Cigarettes weren't really deemed as deadly, sometimes people even supported cigarettes back then. So she wouldn't had known that, that would've killed her children.
This hits deep in my soul because my mom told me she miscarried 3 times before she have me and my 3 other siblings...except she did not smoke or anything like that, she was just too young until she had me at 18... Also to add, dad's side of the family has a history of miscarriages, stillborns, and premature births...
I'm shock of how many kids died inside her til i remember that in all the picture she was smoking, so yeah big wonder ow they died and yet clay was only to get to live because she stop smoking and drinking
