How do these Mordaunt Short MS20i Bookshelf Speakers sound ?
And comparison to the MS10 & MS25i.
I was not over impressed with the overall sound, being quite constraint and boxy. and not exciting.
Bass with to much bass emphasis, lacking detail
Vocal having some colourisation and not as natural as they could have been
Treble was a little lacking
Tone controls could help out a little, but still a speaker that I will soon forget

Those series are the best from mordaunt short. I have the ms10i and ms30i. Just awesome speakers

Bearing in mind these speakers are pretty old by now, this reviewer clearly hasn’t heard the MS20Is at their best! I have a 20+ year old pair set up with a pre/power amp combination biwired with QED silver cable and I really rate them! Single note bass? That suggests a poor or incompatible setup that can’t do them justice. They have an ample and tuneful bass with clear midrange and treble. Maybe not as sparkly as more contemporary models (Wharfedale Diamond 9s, for example), but better balanced. Not the most sensitive speaker you can get on a budget these days, but still pretty easy to drive. What they DO need are good ancillaries! Decent amp and source; good solid stands; placement near a solid wall; firing down the long axis of a room if possible. Then sit down and enjoy these very capable inexpensive speakers.

Just bought a pair of these MS20i's on impulse while quickly checking a Salvation Army store for any unloved vintage receivers or amps. Bought them for $44. Frankly, given there superb condition, I thought...why not? I tried them out while paired to a vintage Nakamichi SR-2E receiver (c.1985, with its Nelson Pass licensed/designed STASIS amp) and I was frankly surprised at the results. For a mere US$44, they are an absolute steal, IMHO. Still pinching myself over this deal. Not to mention the SR-2E, which I also picked up used for $120 about 3 months ago. Both perform very well...regardless of their respective age.

I loved the Ms20i speakers back in the day, great sounding with a wide range of music - awesome speakers. Great channel - I've always had a vivid interest in audio/visual where i gained knowledge since collecting the What Hi-Fi and such like magazines from a young age

Thanks for the comment Matthew, I pretty much bought every months copy of What HiFi and others in the 80's a great read on the bus to work, reading all the rewiews on stuff I could not afford at the time lol, but just had enough to get their recomendations on the entry level gear.

I have seen lot of people swear by the MS20i, supposedly it's the best of the bunch, and used right will put much more expensive speakers to shame. The 'problem' maybe is that they are very 'revealing', so good recordings can sound amazing, but by contrast, poorly mastered recordings sound terrible. This will be very apparent when listening to a wide range of tracks. For the same reason, they are very sensitive to the source and amplifier(s) used. Lesser speakers with more 'warmth' (AKA distortion of various forms) sound more consistent regardless of input. The best feature of the MSi/Pearl series is the excellent phase matching between the woofer and tweeter giving a particularly vivid vocal performance. The bottom end isn't perfect but it's very punchy and about as low as you can go with a bookshelf speaker. I find it best to use them with subwoofers and an active crossover - with a high pass filter set at 90Hz you can spank the MS20i seriously hard; vocals & drums are clear as day even when it's loud enough to rattle doors. Bi-amp with a couple of gutsy amps, it's even better and you can adjust the 'brightness' too. I'm not sure what else comes close performance wise at this price point. Certainly the best sounding speakers I have owned and I have had quite a few!

If you're not getting decent bass from your MS 10, your positioning is crap or you're sitting way to close to them. I bough a pair back in '94 and after a good run in the bass was phenomenal for the size. I have owned MS10, MS20I, 20i Pearl, some MS25i (which i would not recommend at all), HT30, and a pair of quite rare MS50. I currently own another pait or MS10, a pair of rosewood MS20i and a pair of Beech MS20i Pearl Edition. I would recommend

I have these in the attic, they’re alright but sound a little soft on the bass. From memory, that’s 30 years ago.

The Pearl editions had better quality polypropylene capacitors in the crossover (as opposed to elelctrolytics in the earlier versions). They Pearl editions are the ones to go for with a cleaner, more detailed top end and can sound very good but are quite fussy about amplifiers.

I live in Cambodia and I can't audition much -- it's basically a scavenger hunt. Right now I have a chance to buy the 10si's or a pair of Tannoy Mercury MX2's. The Tannoys are a little less expensive. The two pairs of speakers are not directly A/B auditionable because they're on different ends of the city. Thoughts?
@MichaelYates
@MichaelYates 7 месяцев назад
Hi, I have not heard the Tannoy Mercury MX2 so I can not commment on them, The Mordaunt Short 10i speakers are quite nice sounding but I would not pay more than £40 here in the UK for them as for around the same money the Wharfedale Diamond 3's are a better pair of speakers. Sorry I can not help further and this is just my opinion

I had the same problem with my KEF Cresta 10 bookshelves. I was always wondering why I couldn't understand the dialogue in movies. Getting a mid didn't really help either. They are just trying to punch above their size bass wise. And these were reviewed quite well... At the time I think I chose between them and the Mordaunt Short MS912.

Thanks for the comment, a shame that on some of these smaller speakers companies over emphasise the lower frequencies to get more bass out the box. I would rather have less but being more natural and detailed.

I own two pairs of speakers, QUAD s1s which cost me £500 and Cresta 10s, which I had given to me. I drive them with two QUAD 306 amps - Bi-Amped I prefer the Cresta 10s! I use Foundation stands 25kg each. Cresta 10s are beautifully balanced the vocals are excellent., they do require a fair bit of power. I regret buying the S1s.

are the MS20I pearl editions and non pearl editions the same, it was my understanding that they were different? I have a set of these in my garage on a Denon CDR m30, I think in total I payed around £60 for everything. bang for buck I cant complain. although the bass lacks finesse it has good punch, which suits my preferred genre of music I'm looking for a similar low budget system for in the bedroom. mostly to support the immensely lacking tv speakers and play music from the smart tv apps. I have sort of narrowed it down to a Marantz M-CR603 and Ms20i speakers, just because I'm happy with the ones I already have. if I play my eBay right I think ill have a pretty good setup for around £150. what do you think? after watching this I'm questioning trying the ms10, which may be better suited to sound from the tv, or should try the pearl edition ms20I? all similarly priced I suppose. The Marantz M-CR603 is fairly powerful so I would have thought the 20s were pretty well suited. perhaps you could recommend something else at around the same price with a good balance to improve the dialogue on the tv and have reasonable punchy bass I value when listening to dance music - subscribed this channel is right up my street.
@MichaelYates
@MichaelYates 3 года назад
Hi Evan, Looking at the specs and reviews of the Marantz M-CR603 it does look like a nice well spec'd and sounding unit. I have been looking around the net and can not find out how the normal MS20i differ from the Pearls, I would have thought though the pearls would be an upgrade, better crossover and maybe drivers, So probably sound better. I would say if you like the sound of the ones you have maybe stick with them for this system. The ms10's are nice enough but are bass shy and will be smaller sounding due to the size difference. For listening to TV dialog and nice vocals the Celestion DL4 series two are quite a nice speaker and have a nice open soundstage. For a more warmer sound the Celecston 3's are nice, though top end is rolled off. I have a pair of Mordaunt Short MS25ti's that are quire a big pair of speakers for a bookshelf, but have a nice tight bass and overall sound in pretty much keeping to how Mordaunt Shorts sound.

@@MichaelYates I'm sue when i looked at buying my ms20is i found an article which explained them and gave detail about the guy that designed them. I cant seem to find it again. I think the DL4 will be stretching the budget a bit but ill keep an eye out. ill look out for all of them and whatever comes up for the best price first ill give it a go,

Any speaker cable will be ok 16 to 20 swg, strand 69 is cheap enough and will do a good job as sold here on Amazon www.amazon.co.uk/iStrand-Premium-Strand-Oxygen-Speaker-Red/dp/B0767J55HP/ref=pd_lpo_sccl_1/262-8931253-8293165?pd_rd_w=DF7yz&content-id=amzn1.sym.448aab69-6fff-42b9-9d7a-f6325052a6f6&pf_rd_p=448aab69-6fff-42b9-9d7a-f6325052a6f6&pf_rd_r=YBSWG9NZEZTFRRRXCATH&pd_rd_wg=ZF3cA&pd_rd_r=f5cb3a4b-4a8b-45ab-bc7d-94feef53af87&pd_rd_i=B0767J55HP&psc=1

Without listening to the Yamaha speakers you have I can not really say, the ms 10's are nice little speakers , lacking a bit of bass. I have recently got hold of a pair of Wharfedale Diamond 3 speakers and these are better than the ms 10's in my opinion as they do have more in the bass department than the ms10's and are a nice little bookshelf speaker. My review here ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-aDvMdrsD4hI.html

@@MichaelYates Hi Michael, I think the Jamos are really sensitive and have a 6.5 inch driver that lacks bass but has an interesting mid range. They're weird speakers and I was interested in a second take on them. The MH have a warm sound, I've never heard them but some people love them and don't want anything else.
