My opinion: Kpop has become (for years) about what is trendy now. I find myself listen to an album, then never return back to it or return just a couple of times. Like the MVs are like movies, title tracks as well - you watch and listen to it, you like it, then you listen to it a few times, then you forget it, then the artist release their new album, the cycle repeat itself. Like, I see that fans are more into variety shows, seeing their faves on red carpets and commercials because we know nothing about their private lives, so those kind of things help us make scenarios in our heads, make us stan idols and defend them as music becomes something less important. That's why the music is kinda mediocre. For example, I listen to a lot of western artists and can say that their music is top priority for their fans. Dating, parasocial relationships, fan wars, etc, are almost non-existent. I find myself listen to whole discographies of artists and never get bored with them. The thing with Kpop music is that it is like a trend that really fell off and feels kinda empty. Ofc, there will always be a few exceptions but the overall is important.
100% agree. I still find myself going back to 2nd and 3rd gen MVs and watching them again. But with 4th and even 5th gen I never find myself doing it. I think this is reflected in view counts, kpop MVs used to make a lot more views overtime than they do now.

Unpopular opinion: Fans have no right to complain about prices that companies put on things if they’re going to buy them anyways. A lot of listeners of TxT were upset seeing how the tickets for their tour were being priced yet still bought them anyways. They’re only feeding into the situation and telling companies they’ll take whatever treatment as long as your favorite’s face is on it.

I agree with all your opinions...except the one about boy groups. I agree most of the gb's concepts have been too similar and it's getting boring mostly just seeing the same bad boyish concepts and song vibe but i don't agree that it's all bgs are putting out. And i don't agree that boy groups music is getting bad or that it ever was because even if i dislike one release from one bg I'm loving another from a different bg or a b-side. For me as a multistan of both gg and bg I'd honestly say it's the same. Because there has been a good amount of gg releases i having vibed with the same amount as the bg ones. I think it's mostly just music preference. Hard agree on the Twice opinion. I ult Twice but I sadly feel their music has also become more boring in recent years too. It feels devoid of personality and like songs sung by Twice rather than Twice songs™️. 2019-2021 was the sweet spot for me in terms of maturing their sound but keeping their personality and signature energy there. I’ll never abandon them, and I think they still have it in them to make great songs (Queen of Hearts and Hare Hare are amazing) but they’re in a slump for me personally.

For the BG opinion I got some things to talk about (Coming from a GG and BG stan.) Now it could just be your taste but personally, I like listening to bgs sometimes more than ggs or ggs more than bgs, it just depends for me. But not all bgs are "noise music", saying this because groups like boynextdoor, zb1, enhy, txt, tws, svt, etc exist. Now if you like noise music, cool. You can listen to groups like NCT, Stray Kids, Ateez, etc. Don't know much abt NCT because like.. I haven't gone into a deep dive into their music yet but for Stray Kids and Ateez, they're not all just noise music (unless you've listened to the title tracks, then that'll explain it) But if you listened to songs like Utopia, I am You, Take Me, Twilight, Levanter, GLOW, Going Dumb, Deep End, etc. Those can be examples of chill, laid back music, but like.. I'm still waiting for people to realize that Hybe is not a label, but a corporation. imo, every group should have set positions, but that doesn't mean they all cant be all-rounders. one member should atleast be the best in their own field. for example, a main vocalist being the best at vocal, but does really well at rapping and dancing. just imagine that member suddenly having a rap part in a song, isn't that more shocking?
Unionizing is an interesting concept, but it wouldn’t work in kpop because of how the industry works. The typical kpop lifespan is only a few years (if even that). However you spin it, most kpop idols have a short career in kpop, especially for guys, and there’s significant disparity between idols in the big 3 or big 4 vs small companies. The competition is incredibly steep, so there will always be non-union members waiting in the wings to agree to a lower profit share or otherwise agree to more egregious treatment by the company, and living conditions. How are you going to collect fees from idols who aren’t earning anything until their debts are paid off? Although international fans would support a strike, it’s the Korean fans who really matter. Imagine if their idols decided to strike because a collective bargaining deal can’t be made - that means no new content … music or otherwise for the unforeseeable future. And these proceedings can be protracted. Just look at what’s going on with the physician strike in Korea right now.

However, I feel everyone knows that in the beginning their music was not well received. It was admirable in a sociopolitical context- as we have seen in other forms of media like, “Squid Games,” “Parasite,” and even in songs like “Gangnam Style,” South Korea’s consumerism, materialism, and obsession with luxury has lead to a very toxic cultural and socioeconomic climate. BTS’s first song was confronted the school system that encouraged conformity, overachieving, and the commodifying of identity to simply pursue money and material gain and how the youth feel unheard and lied to from their institutions and systems…and everyone hated it at first! K-Pop fans didn’t get it, it was critically panned, and BTS often detail they were mocked by interviewers and music show host. Anyone saying they hate their new stuff, and “miss the old BTS,” is talking about WHEN they moved towards a more mainstream sound which is essentially what lead to the current era of music they are in. So it makes no sense.

Illit had a super successful debut (with a potential hot100 debut btw), TXT sold over a million copies, LSF cb was also a success, and SVT about to sell 250 photo cards as well as concert tickets. Even when I did a pause from kpop from mid 2021 to the end of 2023, I heard snippets of kpop here and there especially on tiktok but I've seen a lot of Skz content without wanting on youtube on unexpected creators videos.

This!! I had seen a moa suggesting online when the txt tickets were sold that instead of buying from resellers and scalpers to instead donate that money. I thought it was a great idea to stick it to people reselling for ridiculous prices and actually do some good.
They got rid of positions to stop in-fandom fighting. Now nobody can complain about the main or lead vocalists having fewer lines than the sub-vocalists because the company never said who was who. This also stops fights about why the main rapper has no rapping lines in a song but the lead rapper does. This fighting in fandoms like Blinks (Blackpink), Armys (BTS), Onces (Twice), etc is part of what breeds solo stans. Having no positions the line distribution can fluctuate like it needs to based on who the producer thinks sounds the best not based on who has certain positions. Positionless groups don't mean every member is on the same wavelength of talent it just means taking in their talent for what it is. There are too many fights about whether this person is the best rapper or singer because they were given the main position. There are some groups where the positions aren't given based on talent just based on favoritism, etc.
Something that upsets me about the whole boycott situation is that if we weren't asked to boycott BTS, armys could have united to do something more impactful over the ongoing genocide. I mean, it's not like armys can singlehandedly stop the bombing, but we're strong enough to do things like calling out politicians and their donors in mass, donations for humanitarian relief... I don't know, using our strengths as a fandom in a productive way and even make alliances with all kpop fandoms for a common cause. But they asked us to harm BTS in the most aggressive way, calling everyone the Z word to the point that the word is losing it's meaning, guilt tripping everyone that doesn't agree with them, calling names, wishing them harm, etc etc etc. And all of this over one man who's removal won't change anything when it comes to the genocide. Now that I've taken time to reflect on this, it def seemed more like a strategy to boycott BTS, at least by a handful of people. It was a case of ‘the idols being manipulated by one company to sue another company for the wrong reasons and it backfired BAD.’ Attrakt rightfully won given all the evidence that we have. The abuse wasn’t done by them it was all done by the givers. Aside from lack of transparency in revenue they had no reason to be sued in the first place. If anything all the 50/50 case did was take away from what loona’s and omega X’s lawsuit built for kpop idols. To be honest their situation isn’t even comparable to the latter two. It’s a really sad case all around. It’s also almost wild to see people believe twitter more than dispatch when only one of the two had HARD evidence and it wasn’t those twitter pages.
Dare I say the HYBE hate comes from a place of jealousy. I don’t doubt HYBE has their problems, but when it comes to promoting a group they know how to do it. KPOP fans are mad that their faves company doesn’t put in the work like HYBE does and they’re mad. I highly doubt SM fans would be complaining if SM pushed their groups the way HYBE does theirs. All of HYBES post 2019 groups have gotten multiple hit songs on TikTok (which is a great way to get your group recognition) and have all done some kind of promotion in major music industries. TXT and NWJN at lolla, LSFM at Coachella, Enhypen at the Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade, ILLIT at NY fashion week. If other companies did this for their groups they would throw around “payola” and accuse the company of killing kpop😭

In my opinion, group without a set-up positions only makes sense when it's a group of all rounders (like txt). You can't spot any members lacking in anything while they can still shine individually. In other cases position less groups don't make sense.

a lot of boy groups have good b-sides that no one gives a chance bc the first impression (title track) was shit on a platter. xikers and treasure have some of my favorite songs in kpop but almost every one of their title tracks are unlistenable.. it's ridiculous

I’m honestly sad because most boy groups just keep releasing noisy songs, Stray Kids and ATEEZ have done it well but when other groups do it is just a disappointment, Girl groups are releasing more unique music because in my opinion they can do all the concepts and sounds better than boy groups😢

I see the point of not giving positions as a matter of protection: idols can evolve and learn different interests and skills while in a group and, while in a perfect world we could just say "Oh, great, a new talent, so the positions might change, right?", fans can be very clingy to certain positions, and get really upset when faced with change. So a new "dancer", a new "vocalist" or a new "rapper" might not be so well received in a fanbase (specially by solo stans). So the strategy seems, to me, like an attempt to avoid fixed expectations and soften the blow in case of changes. I don't know if that works, honestly, but it makes sense to some extent. I mean, what was exactly the point of naming positions to begin with?
To be honest... Positionless groups feel as an excuse to not label their vocalists in a main, lead, etc., also rappers too. Yes, dancers also fall into this system, but k-pop has become so much performance and dance focused that it's better for your dancing to be better than your singing, and if everyone is a good dancer, then what's the point in having a main and lead? So what's the point in also labeling the main and lead vocalists and rappers? Positions also communicate to a new fan who's coming to the group what to expect of each member. MAMAMOO works as a positionless group, for example, because they have very comparable vocal and a lttle bit of rapping skills, and the same goes for their dancing, so you can expect Solar to have similar skills in singing as Wheein, Wheein close to Hwasa in dancing which is comparable to Moonbyul in rapping. This is NOT the case for all groups. People who start to get to know postionless groups often have the mentality of "oh, so if there's no positions, then everyone's a vocalist/dancer/rapper" which is NEVER the case. Newer fans put the same expectations on every idol on the group if there's no fixed positions, if TWICE was positionless, could someone hold the same expectations in singing for Jihyo and Sana? It wouldn't be fair.

Do you need the company to tell you the position you seem to align to a member anyway? I rather have no position and not have people cry when a member that normally doesn't rap suddenly rap and then say "BUT THE MAIN RAPPER WAS ROBBED" I just really don't get why kpop stans need the clarifications of a position so bad. It literally doesn't make any difference. For me bg music is BAD, gg music is BORING. Occasionally there are good songs from both but overall... What's left for me is the only group I stan and I hope they can leave the kpop sphere one day but that's wishful thinking.
for me as a bg stan, when i listen to gg title tracks thats usually what will make me wanna listen to the rest of the album right - and i listen to A LOT of gg songs so clearly the title tracks slap more often than they dont. however with bgs i either a) genuinely like a title track (or atleast until its inevitably overplayed by my algorithm) b) end up gaslighting myself into liking it or c) don't like it but out of loyalty to the group am more willing to give their bsides a chance and will likely find some gems in there. idk how to explain it and i've never deeped that i do that until this video section of bg songs LMAO but i do think there's some basis in suggesting that gg songs tend to be easier to digest (esp if ur new to kpop or are picky w music)

When I saw that some of the biggest groups only get paid once a year I was a bit baffled. Giving the money they make from album sells, RU-vid videos, and streams, they should be getting paid twice a year at least. Also for the boy group thing I agree. Imo i think boy groups like Txt, Ateez, P1Harmony and Xikers have some listenable music.
I also didn't like Boy In Luv and DNA ;-; I liked OLDER BTS. But I can definitely understand the frustration with people complaining about anything BTS does lol
This is completely my personal opinion, but I think we should not associate every little thing an artist/musician does with the Israel-Palestine situation. I live in India and here we dont really hear much about the whole war situation (could be media-play, or that we have the general elections coming up divertingg attention). Only because of my constant exposure to the internet, I know about the adversity of the situation. Starbucks is still consumed here as a matter of fact, although I don't because it is VERY expensive for me, and honestly that is the sole reason and not because someone in the higher ups is associated or supports Israel. Guys I know I will face backlash for this but here we dont ponder over the war situation much. Yes we know of things that happens occasionally through news etc. But we dont make it our life goal to accuse every person we see drinking starbucks of supporting Israel. And I think K-Pop Idols will be even less aware of the daily updates of the issue. They seldom have time to check updates and reports about themselves, you expect them to be aware of something happening in a completely different country? This post is specifically written in the focus of the whole Starbucks accusation things that went on for a while. If an artist is seen with a mug or coffee or smthin from the brand, just educate them and they will understand, like Jake of Enhypen. But do not go around accusing and spreading rumours about their whole identity for a genuine mistake. This again only applies to idols who have made genuine mistakes and then corrected or atleast tried to correct them.

a lot of these r okay or just mid.. if u want to find good bg music u have to really search edit: i listened to all of these and theyre actually not bad! im on the active hunt for better boy group music and ive listened to all these groups and groups like cix, ab6ix, cravity (theyre quite great actually), rize, zb1 (my fave as of rn), tws, bnd, riize, and p1h like u mentioned. i loved p1hs bside for their new album but i hate killin it lol, late night callin has my HEART tho. ive even been visiting albums from 3rd gen boy groups i never rlly listened to (exos new album, some previous shinee albums) but i still confidently believe that the one thing holding boy group music back is the rapping and i still agree with redvelvetsus's opinion on that. the random raps before the prechorus, or raps even acting as a pre/post chorus completely ruin my excitement for a song. i dont think its fair to pretend that boy group music is great though, or on par with gg music, bcs all the songs u listed are the exception where u have to find nugus for. theyre not the overwhelming majority or representing the face of current boy group music.
I disagree with the bts opinion. I was a dedicated army for 5 years but as soon as they rereleased the same song (dynamite) over and over, I became disinterested. It felt like they weren’t in it for the creativity and lore anymore, but just for milking a successful song. Which id stand behind if said song was good. I think dynamite is an okay song on its own because it’s not meant to be taken serious, but replicating it over and over just makes bts’ overall discography look unserious particularly to those who don’t know a lot of bts’ discography. I also just saw a dip in budget with the MVs which we shouldn’t be seeing for the biggest boy group in the world. I think for those that genuinely care about the music, it’s less about the language and just the song itself.
the thing is though, these english singles are just a minuscule part of their entire discography, and it’s not like every single song they have released in recent years is like that. i’m a firm believer in run bts being up there with the best music they’d ever produced, for example
the english trilogy was just that: a trilogy. I don't understand people who see bts as having gone downhill since the trilogy because it's like: have you never listened to their solo projects? Are you just ignoring BE? Can't you see the Take Two? Like I get that it could feel frustrating that BTS is known for unserious projects now in the GP, but it's not their fault, it's about radioplay.
What about all the other songs they released during the past few years that weren't Dynamite, Butter, or Permission To Dance. You do realize BTS weren't going to release anymore music after Map of the Soul: 7 because they were going to do the world tour and then enlist, but then the pandemic happened and they had to do their best with a crappy situation. These songs were gifts, and what about the other songs on BE or their solo songs/albums.
Uhm no Hard pass on this opinion. Right after Dynamite BE happened which was a good and well-produced pandemic album. Then a Japanese compilation album with Film Out literally one of their best Japanese songs to date. I don't know what you expected from BTS during this time because in my opinion they just made do with the situation they were in. They couldn't enlist like they did and had to literally cancel their massive world tour. These songs you described as a way of milking it for money or whatever was what they could do at the time because they literally had a lot of their plans ruined. In fact, they don't make noise music at all. If you look up the definition of noise music, Noise music is a genre of experimental music that uses sound elements that are typically considered unwanted or unpleasant such as static, distortion, and feedback, to create a unique and often abrasive sound. It often lacks traditional melody or rhythm and is focused on exploring the textures and effects of sound. Examples of actual noise music artists include Merzbow, Wolf Eyes, Prurient, and Pharmakon. Stray Kids uses fusions of genres, including hip-hop, EDM, rock, pop, and R&B. Since they use Rock and EDM in their title tracks (not all of their songs), obviously the songs will sound "noisy" to people who don't like Rock or EDM. Saying they only make noise music shows you've only heard their title tracks which contain loud BGM's and bass boosted 808's. They literally have songs such as Secret Secret, 19, Get Cool, Blueprint, Levanter, The View and so much more that aren't loud and are actually soft songs. I respect people's opinion on music since it's subjective and people like what they like but I what I don't respect is people not learning the definition of terms they use to put down a group who makes comebacks/title tracks that use elements of loud genre's such as EDM and Rock, and then generalize their entire discography based on said comebacks/title tracks.
I do not like the group of Sorce but lets be honest here, giving their age, giving their work and giving what we know of them it is so dumb to think they have a different or more formed oppinion in such complex conflict than most of us. Girl Groups are way worse than boy groups. So many of the new gg’s have meaningless lyrics, with random English phrases thrown in, and repetitive onomatopoeia. It’s just bubblegum.
