In this video, I take a closer look at Jay DeFehr's 510-Pyro #510pyro, comparing it with my tried and true, Pyrocat-HD. I take a look at a few questions about this developer, and tackle the age old question: Are Alkaline based fixers okay to use with staining developers such as 510-Pyro. The film used for all the tests was 4x5 HP5.
Here's a link to the scanned and inverted bleached negative: www.flickr.com...
Please also check out my Making 510-Pyro video: • Making 510 Pyro Film D...
I also want to share with you a blog on the use of Alkaline and Acidic based fixers with staining developers. Please go and check out Koraks tinkers:

Well that certainly answered a few questions I had about 510 Pyro. I lith printed a few that were developed in 510 Pyro and it's better printing like scanning but I didn't do too many, so the jury is still out on that. I always wondered about the fixer and myself I do not like the TF 5 so I stay with the TF 4 fixer for film and paper.

Nice review of the Pyro 510...What's stopping me to get the Pyro 510 is looking for non acid based fixer for it, hard to come by locally (or I didn't search hard enough). Now I can pull the trigger for Pyro 510. TQ

I had a feeling going into this that acid fixers would be fine. I've been using Ilford's Rapid to fix Pyrocat-HD negatives for years with no depletion of stain.

Another great video. I'll be waithing for the 510 Pyro + x-ray film video. I got my 510 pyro made and x-ray film loaded. Need a sunny day to come around to test it out myself. Also building a LED UV box so i won't need the sun for alt printing. Is there any difference between FT-4 and FT-5? I was going to make some FT-2 till I got lazy and bought a bottle of FT-4.

Living on the west coast of BC, Canada, I know all about no sun, especially as we slide into the Winter months... rain.... and more rain. The difference between TF5 and TF4 is that TF4 is more alkaline.

Silly question, but do you have to be in complete darkness when changing the chemistry for the stop and the fixer in your tube system? Thank you for this fantastic experiment!
@analogueandy8x10
@analogueandy8x10 Год назад
Nope. I have the lights on even when I stick the tubes in the stop...even a water stop. By the time the film goes into the stop bath, nothing bad is going to happen to it, unless I stick it back into the developer! I've had developed film sitting in the stop bath (in the tube) for 5 minutes, before sticking it in the fixer. I've been using BTZS (Beyond The Zone System) tubes for about 25 years. No issues. Thank you for commenting!

I thought TF-5 is a neutral fixer vs TF-4 which is definitely alkaline? Never used TF-5, but I've used TF-4 for years.
@analogueandy8x10
@analogueandy8x10 Год назад
It's "near" neutral, compared to TF-4. I have a bottle of TF-4 coming in the post! Thanks for commenting, Alan!

Would love to see a print from the negative with just the stain left. I had good experience with PMK and x ray, can't get TEA or phenidone in Pakistan to try 510

I did scan it in and invert to a positive. I had to make contrast adjustments. I thought about making a print, but in the end I figured there wasn't enough density, even for a cyanotype. Here is a link to the scan: Stain Only Negative & The Positive by Andrew O'Neill, on Flickr

@@analogueandy8x10 I was curious about a print from it, to see how the mask, sans the silver, handles uv light. I don't have a densitometer so all judgments are visual. It's always interesting to see the amount of detail that can be pulled out with a scanner. Thanks Andy!

@@ope19head check out koraktinkers blog. He does make a cyanotype from just the stain. tinker.koraks.nl/photography/to-stain-or-not-to-stain-acid-and-pyro-developers/
