In my last video I spoke at length about canteens and the choices I would make today. Many of you pointed out other canteens that I have shown in past videos and that I did not include in the recent video. So to answer the questions of the subscribers I will include those canteens in this video. the type 58 water bottle is a British and I think NATO issue canteen .They are good rugged canteens for Bushcraft /Woodscraft use and will be a good choice. I also speak of the Swedish haversack flask and the French canteen system. I hope this will answer and more questions you may have but if not feel free to comment down below and I will be happy to respond.
british military surplus canteen, type 58 water bottle, french military surplus, swedish military surplus, canteens. water bottles, GI issue,GI canteen,Gi 2 quart canteen.

I always thought it'd be cool if someone could make an old school round canteen with a wide mouth that could fit into the arctic canteen pouch with cup.

hi blackie, retired us army here. while still in the service. i added a 2nd us army canteen to my military gear. reason is i hate plain water. so this 2nd canteen set, including stove. was my cook set. while my issued set was my drinking set. near the end of my service i added the 2qt with cover & carry strap to my personal gear, along with a 2nd 1qt canteen set. for a couple of decades that was my standard water carry setup. after watching some of the other videos on you tube i have added a couple of single wall ss water bottles to my truck carry gear, for like you have stated. being able to heat snow. a couple years ago i added a 3liter camelbac & sawyer water filter to my setup. earlier this year, i attended a auction an scored big time. from the auction i picked up a early wwii shelter half set(buttons instead of snaps), the older style poles, wooden tent pegs. me i always used snaps. part of the rest was that era metal canteen set. from watching your 2 videos on canteens i have also learned a couple of things. like the denture cleaner for cleaning the canteens. the nalgene bottles. will have to look for one. an painting my cook cup with bbq heat paint. thank you an the folks watching your videos for the information.

I use to use just a plastic 2 liter pop bottle in a wool home made bag that had an aluminum cup I bought at the time for $2.50 at a dollar store. It was good enough to do an over night camp. Now I have the Self Reliance canteen kit with a Sawyer filter to go with it. I fill the bottle and screw on the filter and squeeze to get a drink, fill the canteen or cup to cook with. I was a boy scout Scout leader and we went camping at least once a month, 12 mouths a year along with a couple of week long camps for years. I have done a lot of camping and this set up has never let me down. Recently I have purchased a two cup Stanley cook set and a US GI mess kit to add to my kit. Because Being in my late 60s I just do car camping now so I don't have to carry the weight very far.

It did from the mid 90s onwards. Prior to that it was the Osprey bottle and cup - which nested on top of the bottle not vice versa so you had to pull it out to access the water bottle - in a tight fitting canvas pouch which used to shrink when wet, which happened often in Sennybridge, Otterburn, or NW Germany. The BCB Crusader MK1 & 2 equipment which was added to it later (mid 90s) makes it usable. Now in civvy street I use a Dutch Army canteen and steel cup (like the US GI type) which go in a waterproof not-too-tight cordura DPM pouch, and there's room for a Pathfinder stainless lid and a stainless folding twig stove which also can be used with twigs, tablets or Firedragon gel, or a Trangia (fits perfectly). On overnighters I add to that one of my Dutch mess tins - like the British ones but stainless and with rolled edges - and a copy of the old mess tin lid / frying pan which did exist at some time on issue (as it had an NSN) but I never saw anyone with one. Back in those days Airborne and SF used to opt for the British 44 pattern bottle and metal cup as the Osprey setup was gash.

O ring fixed my 2 Brit 58 canteens leak. If you use a Brit utility pouch you can use a USGI canteen set with another cup on top of canteen. It won't snap on like the 58 style does, looks like a German Bundeswehr set. Got some USGI canteen cups without handles on them from SMG years ago. I put one in my cup for my canteen set giving me 2 cups in one ALICE LC-2 cover.

The last part of the video mentioned sweating puddles. If you're sweating that much then you need to replace electrolytes. Drinking more water will make electrolyte depletion worse! Look for something in the grocery store called Lite Salt. This is salt that has 50% less sodium. The missing sodium is replaced with potassium chloride. This means that Lite Salt has both sodium and potassium, both of which are important electrolytes. Put a tablespoon of Lite Salt in 1 liter of water or to taste. You want it salty enough to taste it but not so salty you can't chug it, but don't chug it. Mix in 1 tablespoon of a carbohydrate source like honey, agave nectar, or real maple syrup. Electrolytes and carbs are good energy and will perk you up. So again: 1 liter of water 1 tablespoon of Lite Salt 1 tablespoon of honey, agave, or maple syrup

The Swedish flask is very cool. I own one. I use the cup mainly for drinking whiskey in the field or in the backyard if I'm grilling. It has one huge drawback though. The inside of the canteen taints the water giving it a bad taste. For that reason I do not recommend it for field use except as a novelty item- as in drinking whiskey in the back yard with your friends.

I have one or two flasks that I carry. The standard US 16 oz fits either in a hip pocket or cargo pocket on the leg. Two of those gives you a quart of water. The best part is when you think you probably wont need water it is a simple carry. Chances are you will drain it and want to refill it. Not to hard from a drinking fountain. If the OD green bothers you, get some spray paint for plastic and color it what you like.

The BCB Crusader/Type 58 is available from Amazon last I looked a coupe of months ago, but it ain't cheap. Right up there with the Pathfinder version. After years of looking I finally broke down and bought the Keith/Heavy cover set in titanium. Comes with the cup and lid and is very sturdy and is somewhat lighter than the military or Pathfinder sets, Fits a GI carrier but I prefer to use the "Mother" carrier from Center Line Systems. Have it rigged to carry on a shoulder strap. Expensive yes but worth it. For a secondary canteen/water bottles I go with the Nalgene canteens. Will occasionally use a 3 quart Camelback rig in very dry country or anywhere water availability is doubtful.

I built an entire set for 1/4 of the price of his newer fancy titanium set. past that the set you did not mention that is cheaper and more rugged is a nalgene bottle, not the oasis canteen, and a cup and bottle carrier. my entire set cost me less than $20 for 32 ounce capacity with a 20 ounce cup and lid and that all included a molle carrier to haul it all. in the end though, i use a 1.5 liter water bladder with a titanium cook set, and a 1 liter Nalgene oasis canteen.
